In 1975 I had a date, this girl took me to her apartment. She played some JP, I had never heard him before. That night I fell in love. ...with John Prine.
@@franklange7692 Please try to be more kind. John Prine was kind. He's a good example. Be more like John Prine. Your life will improve immensely, guaranteed.
"Dear Abby" was the song my then husband used to introduce me to JP. My John is gone and so is John Prine. That is the way the world goes round. In an instant.
I have choked back tears all day thinking of the loss of John. I loved his songs, his spirit, his incredible mind and sense of humor. He carried me through many difficult times in my life. I have learned every song of his on my guitar and wish more than anything else, I could sing like him. My deepest condolences to Fiona and his kids. He was a true legend and treasure. Can't wait to meet you one day at the Tree of Forgiveness.
Being older n ‘ a god I can see The Summerlands from here. We’ll be settin’ under a tree, drinking happy wine, smoke in the air; pickin’ n’ singin’, laughin’ n’ weepin’, and Oh That Picnik basket. Hasta la vista friends.
You can't sing like John Prine, and neither can I. But you can sing his songs, and when you do it's like John isn't really gone, at least for a little while. Please keep singing.
Went through a rough period in 2005 after losing my dad. My first girlfriends best friends dad introduced me to John Prine. This and so many other songs of his helped clear my mind and I will ever be grateful!
me too ! same timescale. his geniality and sense of the absurd shine through here. I was next door to his house in the wilds of Connemara shore her in Ireland a month ago. pretty garden.
Wow, I'm not alone. A friend sent me a RUclips of 'Orange Blossom' about 8 months ago, I was floored. Still trying to figure out how in gods name I hadn't realised or found what I now consider one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. I was never as devasted by an artists death, like I had known him. Have not stopped listening to him. RIP John, Your music will live forever, bless your Soul, from Ireland.💚🇺🇸🇮🇪.
My parents introduced me to this song as a kid but I had never seen this performance. Truly one of the greatest songwriters in american history. If this is the end john, thank you so much for this music that has been helping me get thru these dark, absurd times 🙏
Every time I need more positive things in my day I’ll listen to some John Prine songs. This clip is one of the ones on my list. He left us too soon but thank God for his words/music and videos, like this one filmed around the kitchen table. It Always makes me smile. RIP JP….❤
I was familiar with Paradise and Spanish Pipedream. When I heard he died I started to listed to Great Days which had but never opened. Wow. I too had no idea how great he was. The world does need music like this. Dylan Fogerty Petty love them all but Prine is now my favorite.
274 comments only? That makes me afraid for my kids and Grandkids. I am 275. A couple of whiskeys with a couple of beers back and the next thing you know everybody is half ploughed and lost thier smokes...but not thier picks. If I could only travel back in time. R.I.P. John, Steve - Mr. Van Zant and the rest...there are to many to count.
My old man thinks thumbing down means your done watching . He's an old vet can't tell him $*#@! . Lmao one day they will be gone no one alive before the digital age, woah !
We all love you John. Thank you for leaving your legacy for us all on this planet. We know you love us too. Enjoy that 9 mile long cigarette up there ol buddy.
Yep, or when Faulkner flogged the Poms at cricket. It's a race. John wasn't part of my Aussie upbringing, but is sure part of my life now. Feelin down, have a cry, Get up again. Best not to smoke though.
When one of my sons was very small, maybe 3 or 4, he would always ask me to play the mountain rocks song whenever I put on a John Prine album in the car. What he wanted was Fish and Whistle. He heard "monkey wrench" as "mountain rocks". He is a 17 year old musician himself now and at a party last week brought the house down with great versions of several of John's songs like Bruised Orange and Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.
Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, Steve Goodman, JJ Cale and John Prine - My 5 favorite songwriters ever. I'm sure there are more great ones out there - just never found any of this caliber.
What a warm funny human person he was. I love videos like this showing his normal personality just talking with friends cause you see what he was truly like and know how great a person he was.
That's making music! Natural and confident. *Smirks..."Jim, do you "know" which way the world goes 'round". I'm going to play this again...hell maybe a few more times.
Holy moly, this looks just like my (late) mom’s kitchen back in the 70’s with the same phone on the wall, behind him. She always had many friends and family over. We would sing all night around the kitchen table while she and one or two others, would play guitar. also, i love the harmony someone tossed in there.
From the bottom of my heart thank you for uploading this video , I’ve watched it constantly since I was very young and it’s never failed to make me happy
Great video... thanks for posting this. Some people say John wasn't a very good player, to which I agree, he was a MASTERFUL player! No one has nor will ever make 3 simple chords sound so freakin good.
The joke about sounding all the same is a joke if make to my musician friends. This video is beautiful. It's John surrounded by friends and it makes me happy
Terrific! This really captures John in a very relaxed frame of mind, and all present seem to be having a wonderful time. I only wish he had sung the burrito song.
Just wanted to give you a very late thank you for posting this. Unfortunately I only really got to know John Prine after his death during all the early covid lockdown stuff, but like a lot of people fell in love with his music very hard very fast. There is just something about him and his music that is hard to put into words, but you can just feel it really deep, like a massage or a hug for your soul, that just makes you feel like you're not alone.
I could just imagine siting and playing songs with him like that around a kitchen table . In fact i would love to be doing it right now because that would mean he was still with us
Thanks for the Post... Sure do miss John Prine , if he only knew how much he influenced my song writing and picking style... doing mostly singles know I get a lot of John Prine requests so thanks brother... love you and miss you.. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY✝️🙏😎🎸🎶🎼
Reminds me of old times sittin round the kitchen table playing music with people we loved after most everyone else passed out. It was usually around 4 AM and drinkin the beer we hid in the river and home made wine that 3 kittens nearly drowned in.... long story but basically the cats were drunk and all the stores were closed, I guess that's the way the world goes round.
That's the John Prine I remember from seeing him in concert in the late 70s/early 80s- needing the occasional prod about how the song or next verse starts.
If Mr Prine was ever "arrogant" it was in this recording...and only because Jim obviously didn't understand his place. This is a favorite on the fact that it's in the moment, raw and had a natural catanse that's pretty complex. John Prine in his element. Priceless
My favorite prine clip...its my birthday, March 30th...but john won't see another one... joe diffie yesterday, and prine will be gone before the week ends....god speed john.....one of the greats....
Love Prine and love this video! Wish folks would take the beginning with a grain of salt. I am sure it was no more than one one friend busting another friends balls. Prine sure didn't seem to care.
Cole Locke yes! There’s another video of him in an interview or just an intro for a song, I forget, but he openly says I can only really play two melodies; fast and slow haha.
