His ecclectic artistic rise was a jamboree of the unconventional, and, if one wants to be honest - and isn't that the point, the conventional (which was predominantly an unsuccessful avenue for him - hence why so many are so much less aware of those efforts.) Lets admire the artist, whose exploration allowed him to reconcile all the wild and conflicting aspects of himself; and not praise an absolutist, or the idolatry of perfection.

For the last 50 years I've felt that David Bowie was one of the 3 or 4 celebrities I wish I had known personally. He screwed up parts of his life, but he was always intelligent, introspective, considerate and funny as hell. He died gracefully. I miss his voice.
This definitely applies to ALL artists. Writers, illustrators, musicians, etc. I'm an illustrator and I've noticed artists I speak to online often lose their adoration for art when they draw what's trending as opposed to what they enjoy. Many hate working in the industry too. Industry veterans give advice on how to avoid losing your spark & love for art when pursuing art as a career and a lot of it boils down to setting aside time and energy to create things just for you. I am often told that my art is "underrated" and that I should have more followers based on the quality of my work. But i dont create to appeal the masses. I create what brings me joy. If that makes me harder to find, then so be it.
@HonoredMule sometimes the gallery sucks tho. Ive seen some amazing clips of hilarious comedians that had me doubled over in laughter while the crowd had to be prodded and mocked by the comedian to get any more than a few sparse chuckles. Why am I as an illustrator allowed to draw whatever I want even when my own family calls it boring and uninteresting and a waste of time, but a comedian has to alter their entire routine that they spent months working on to one bad crowd? Just like with illustration, the people who dont like it will leave and the ones who do will stay. Thats how you build a community.
@@LilChuunosuke That doesn't really negate the fact that comedic skill is both developed and and demonstrated by manipulating the audience and finding what works (including for you at home) by reading them (even when the comedian bombs because of a mismatch). They may base their material on personal experience and interest, but they _really_ don't get to just live there, or they do it alone. At best finding their base is a two-way street. The best of them will tell you their instincts for what the audience _should_ find funny is woefully unreliable, and it's why people who can fill Carnegie Hall still experiment with new material in small random dives to limit the blast radius when they bomb. This dependence on and desperation to please the crowd is the basis of the comedian's art. Have you never heard one admonishing outsiders to pick something else if they possibly can? Now you can understand why it sucks so much.
I hear “be outside of your comfort zone” all the time, but you shouldn’t be drowning! David makes a great point - you need to be a LITTLE outside of the comfort zone.
Psychologists should know that, exposure training is done safely that way and is most adept way we know of to overcome fears and become more assertive and proficient

@@KyleDevy There is no such thing as a British accent. There are accents from Britain, that's different. Depends on which country within Britain and which region or even town. Accents in Britain vary wildly, even from towns just 10-20 miles apart or boroughs within London. (But London is a bit harder due to the transient population).

I’ve also encountered that kind of “advice” from non artists. They are not artists, they mean well. But as non artists, they don’t experience what you experience. It’s like sparrows asking an eagle “Why spend the energy flying so high? There’s nothing above the treetops.”
If you're drawn to produce a certain type of art it will be YOUR expression of that type of art. If it pleases you, it will also please others. We have 8.5 billion people on this earth so there will be others who like what you do
Masterpieces are always popular. If noone but yourself likes it, then you haven't made a masterpiece. If you make it only for yourself as a form of meditation, as something to be proud of, that means something to you, go ahead. But if you want to contribute, make something impactful or long lasting, you have to make it approachable.

I actually met David Bowie in the early 1980’s when he was performing in The Elephant Man during a limited engagement on Broadway. He was a real gentleman and to this date it was the best thing I’ve ever seen on Broadway. An all around talent!

Something I learned today- Although his face has so many distinct features, Bowie is quite difficult to draw. I think this is because you not only have to capture a resemblance, but you also have to capture the aura of the coolest person who ever walked the Earth.

Also, Bowie famously repeatedly reinvented himself. Playing to the gallery would be sticking to a safe, tried and tested style, not constant experimentation.

Surprisingly, this _introspective_ exploration of _my_ experiences helped me to connect with _others_ who have had similar experiences, allowing _them_ to feel better understood, _too!_ As Bowie noted, _not_ pandering generates the best (and sometimes most successful) art! Side Note: My best friend...whom I can always trust to be brutally honest...once told me he _hated_ one of my songs. After considering his input, I changed _nothing!_ I wrote it for _me._
I wish it were that easy. I can do works in expressionism, graffiti, oils, watercolor etc but I can’t just do something because I want to. If someone commissions say a painting of a goth, cat with Native American vibes I can do it. I feel as I got older the rules of society took away any creativity I had. When your a kid with crayons you can draw a purple elephant and nobody cares. It’s crazy how it works

Bowie nicked that line from someone else. He would think it is hilarious that you credit him with it. Probably Picasso or Matisse or Dubonnet or someone smart. Still true though.
This is so easy to say when your as talented and set as him. However, the world is full of ‘artists’ that have neither the talent nor ability to do what he did. The reality is that you create. You adopt process and do it every day for whomever. Yourself, others, for pay, etc. a real artist can move from one job to another and do great work no matter what. That is what makes them a great artist - not just doing what you feel like.

It’s crap advice. Amateurs make art for themselves. Real artists make art for an audience. All the billions of self indulgent poems and songs and stories go unheard. Art is communication, not navel gazing.

And Bowie was JUST coming out of a horrible period of doldrums and decadence with Never Let Me Down, Tonight, and Tin Machine (who I rather loved!). I think it's important to keep working even when you are producing rubbish. My god, is final albums were masterpieces. A constant life inspiration. I find it so spooky that we lost Bowie, Prince, and Leonard Cohen more or less during the same interval of time. Three supreme artists.

As someone struggling to create the ever expanding image in their head, this is a helpful shout out from the past. It's so hard to know that what you are creating will be all that you intended it to be, but challenging yourself to push forward, past the voice inside your own head, whispering to give up and return to the ranks of the countless others who've tapped out, who knows what you are capable unless you only push on and keep working to create whatever it is that you, the individual, sees and understands as the bigger picture. His second bit of advice is so important, and not just for music, but applies to any skill really. It's so easy to hit a comfortable plateau and stop challenging yourself, but then you also stop growing.
Yes and yes. When I first started teaching, I would try to go a little out of my depth every class -- taking a risk with a new voice, new story, new way of engaging with the class. Didn't always work, but the students could generally feel the creative risk and concern and generally were more willing to risk engagement themselves. When I found myself moving into a rut and too tired to get out of it, I knew it was time to quit -- for my sake and theirs. Pushing my edges in the garden for the time being. Love Bowie and appreciate what he accomplished for all of us by following his muse.
Teaching is indeed an art. I did some teaching of small courses, and even that was difficult, but it was challenging and fun too. I hated grade school with a passion. The teachers I had from grade 1 to 6 were all unbelievably bad! I went to about 6 or 8 schools in that time because we moved so much, and I also lived in foster homes. I only saw 1 teacher that cared about any of us or was doing a good job at all. They were all flat demeanored pedantic robots at best, and hysterical, cruel, violent pedophiles at worst. I just can't believe they were ever hired. What kind of a training system existed in Canada in the 60s?! They must have been so desperate for people that they took anyone who applied, and did no training at all. In grade 8, at age 13, I went to a school that had quite a few very good teachers, all in one place! I was stunned! Never having seen a good teacher in the 10 or so schools I'd attended by then, it surprised me a lot! One of them, I think a geography teacher, used to do all kinds of nutty things, and we paid attention so we wouldn't miss them! That school changed me and my life. For the first time since grade one I was willing to listen and to try. I overcame the fear of admitting that I had never learned long division, and actually asked for help. They were willing to let me transfer to class that was away from my friends, at my request, because I knew I couldn't focus with them around me. I improved vastly, and instead of failing I pulled myself through. Unfortunately though, I went to 2 more bad schools and quit after failing grade 9. I did alright though, and became self educated. I wanted to attend university, but life interfered. You sound like one of those great people who truly cared. Please know that you played an important part in their lives. I hope you are happy and healthy, and are doing what interests you. ❤

Words of wisdom from an absolute legendary original artist. David Bowie may have been a coked-up wild man in the 1970s but he remained incredibly brilliant and creative throughout, and of course he thankfully grew-out of and overcame his addiction, and became an absolute gentleman while still maintaining some level of artistry.
Knowing Bowie's experiences in the 1980's, it's clear he's speaking from firsthand experience. The guy spent the better part of a decade trying to appease the people who got into him through Let's Dance and knew that the quality of his work was suffering from it, and when he shifted back to making music for himself first and foremost it allowed him to enjoy doing what he did again.
Let's Dance is a terrific album. You can't knock Niles Rodgers. There's nothing wrong with a record you can hum and that makes you want to dance. It wasn't as though he'd released 'The Birdie Song'. It was cool, he _looked_ cool. I was an adolescent when it came out. I knew he wasn't competing with the likes of Spandau Ballet. He sounded classy, as though Roxy Music was trying funk out for a fit.
@@reesemorgan2259 Well the problem wasn't the album itself, because I agree with you that Let's Dance was an amazing pop album. Rather, the issue lied more in the expectations it set afterwards, that feeling of "well I've got this crowd now, so that means I have to appease them," which led to the self-admitted rushed job of Tonight and the well-written but badly-produced Never Let Me Down. Had he not felt that pressure (be it through his own perception or that of EMI), I'm certain that his follow-ups to the already-great Let's Dance could've been equally great (if not better) records.
@VinchVolt my first instinct was to disagree and defend David Bowie, but I actually bought Tonight and Never Let Me Down when they were released and was very disappointed. Despite what people said at the time and still say in retrospect, the Glass Spider tour he took on the road in the Summer of 1987 was insanely cool. It was deeply rooted in intellectual art concepts and that didn’t translate at all in football stadiums filled with 50,000+ drunk fans - David Bowie of all people should’ve realized that. People also dis Tin Machine, but I think that was him letting off some of the frustration you mentioned. IMHO, Heathen is really when he got his mojo back.

David Bowie was my teenage obsession. Love him. However, I do think it is worth noting he did quite intensionally ' play to the gallery' in the 80's with lets dance etc. I saw a documentary a few years back called " Five Years" and there were interviews with the collaboarators who spoke about him dressing and looking for production, suitable for an intentionally commercially successful artist. That was very much what the 80's was about, but he certainly dove head first into it, and was able to coast on the back of that. I could be wrong, but is worth putting it into context. He was also an extremely hard working individual and loved to perform.
I have revisited this advice over and over again. We are lucky to breathe the same air as him during his lifetime. Such a dream to be a part of his life I'm sure. I don't believe in magic but I do believe in David Bowie.

This popped up on my feed after I watched John Carpenter on Colbert. He's an object lesson in exactly what Bowie is talking about here; doing his own thing, he made a bunch of great movies, a little rough on the edges maybe, but with energy and charm and commitment. Nothing he did with a studio looking over his shoulder is worth very much.
I'm literally at the crossroads and for me this couldn't be more profound. Even more so for his career seeing that has be known to completely reinventing.

This is good advice. I am a poet. I take risks in my poems frequently, and always try it differently, and disregard popular expectations. I write to please and challenge myself. I write for language's sake, not a reader solely. It is the only way to create. If you create to just turn out pulpits creations then you are simply a machine. I suppose that is alright if it is what you want. But you are a machine then, not an artist. Bowie was a rare occurrence of talent and wisdom. He was a comet, and he changed lives in meaningful and artistic ways. He understood human nature. Like all great singing artists he knew what motivates people. Love, death, sex, and meaning. How we all play characters in a play. The man was amazing.

I'm working on a project right now that I'm not very happy with until I watched this video. Because I just realized I'm not happy with it because my feet aren't quite touching the bottom. Now I know I need to embrace that feeling. Thanks, Mr. Bowie, and thanks to the person who uploaded this!
And he's right. He himself led by example. He was an artist who presented himself the way he wanted to present himself creatively, be it his music or be it the visual aspect of his art. He never compromised. It was like: "This is what I do". To this day that is what makes Bowie so endlessly appealing to all those who discover his music. He will always inspire to express individuality.
For me as an artist, the hardest thing to learn was how to be authentic, and not just in private. It makes me wonder if my favorite artist will remain undiscovered, because they were nervous about putting their real self out there.
Not only that but maybe they create something unique and true to themselves but they may never be graced by a record company or social media algorithm and you may never know them.
Back in junior high school, I dreamed of becoming a rich and famous musician. Eventually, I accepted...well...reality. That realization has been _liberating!_ I explore my own experiences and emotions, _assuming_ that commercial success is simply not a part of the equation. The funny thing is that it has resulted in songs that, while I'll never be famous beyond the local scene, there's nothing like performing your own music in front of even a small crowd and seeing them, singing along to every word! The best art expresses _the artist_ and then...as a side effect...manages to somehow help someone _else_ find expression, too. _That_ is how I define success today.

Industry veterans give advice on how to avoid losing your spark & love for art when pursuing art as a career and a lot of it boils down to setting aside time and energy to create things just for you.
I am often told that my art is "underrated" and that I should have more followers based on the quality of my work. But i dont create to appeal the masses. I create what brings me joy. If that makes me harder to find, then so be it.
All? It's great advice for most artists, but almost the exact opposite of what makes a great comedian.

@HonoredMule sometimes the gallery sucks tho. Ive seen some amazing clips of hilarious comedians that had me doubled over in laughter while the crowd had to be prodded and mocked by the comedian to get any more than a few sparse chuckles.
Why am I as an illustrator allowed to draw whatever I want even when my own family calls it boring and uninteresting and a waste of time, but a comedian has to alter their entire routine that they spent months working on to one bad crowd?
Just like with illustration, the people who dont like it will leave and the ones who do will stay. Thats how you build a community.
@@LilChuunosuke That doesn't really negate the fact that comedic skill is both developed and and demonstrated by manipulating the audience and finding what works (including for you at home) by reading them (even when the comedian bombs because of a mismatch). They may base their material on personal experience and interest, but they _really_ don't get to just live there, or they do it alone. At best finding their base is a two-way street.
The best of them will tell you their instincts for what the audience _should_ find funny is woefully unreliable, and it's why people who can fill Carnegie Hall still experiment with new material in small random dives to limit the blast radius when they bomb.
This dependence on and desperation to please the crowd is the basis of the comedian's art. Have you never heard one admonishing outsiders to pick something else if they possibly can? Now you can understand why it sucks so much.

@@KyleDevy There is no such thing as a British accent. There are accents from Britain, that's different. Depends on which country within Britain and which region or even town. Accents in Britain vary wildly, even from towns just 10-20 miles apart or boroughs within London. (But London is a bit harder due to the transient population).
Every time I tell my friends or family about the art I'm creating they say "That's great! But you should really be catering to the masses. Be more marketable. Create things that people like and want to buy." Yes, that's exactly how masterpieces are made. Water down my self expression. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF
I’ve also encountered that kind of “advice” from non artists. They are not artists, they mean well. But as non artists, they don’t experience what you experience.
It’s like sparrows asking an eagle “Why spend the energy flying so high? There’s nothing above the treetops.”
If you're drawn to produce a certain type of art it will be YOUR expression of that type of art. If it pleases you, it will also please others. We have 8.5 billion people on this earth so there will be others who like what you do
Masterpieces are always popular. If noone but yourself likes it, then you haven't made a masterpiece. If you make it only for yourself as a form of meditation, as something to be proud of, that means something to you, go ahead. But if you want to contribute, make something impactful or long lasting, you have to make it approachable.

I actually met David Bowie in the early 1980’s when he was performing in The Elephant Man during a limited engagement on Broadway. He was a real gentleman and to this date it was the best thing I’ve ever seen on Broadway. An all around talent!

Also, Bowie famously repeatedly reinvented himself. Playing to the gallery would be sticking to a safe, tried and tested style, not constant experimentation.

This is actually really good advice for anyone doing a creative project, not just music, be it drawing, painting, writing, dance, acting, etc.
I wish it were that easy. I can do works in expressionism, graffiti, oils, watercolor etc but I can’t just do something because I want to. If someone commissions say a painting of a goth, cat with Native American vibes I can do it. I feel as I got older the rules of society took away any creativity I had. When your a kid with crayons you can draw a purple elephant and nobody cares. It’s crazy how it works

This is so easy to say when your as talented and set as him. However, the world is full of ‘artists’ that have neither the talent nor ability to do what he did.
The reality is that you create. You adopt process and do it every day for whomever. Yourself, others, for pay, etc. a real artist can move from one job to another and do great work no matter what. That is what makes them a great artist - not just doing what you feel like.

And Bowie was JUST coming out of a horrible period of doldrums and decadence with Never Let Me Down, Tonight, and Tin Machine (who I rather loved!). I think it's important to keep working even when you are producing rubbish. My god, is final albums were masterpieces. A constant life inspiration. I find it so spooky that we lost Bowie, Prince, and Leonard Cohen more or less during the same interval of time. Three supreme artists.

As someone struggling to create the ever expanding image in their head, this is a helpful shout out from the past. It's so hard to know that what you are creating will be all that you intended it to be, but challenging yourself to push forward, past the voice inside your own head, whispering to give up and return to the ranks of the countless others who've tapped out, who knows what you are capable unless you only push on and keep working to create whatever it is that you, the individual, sees and understands as the bigger picture. Dans Leg's The Nails wouldn't have pulled the same shit on him like they did to Marylin Manson on tour like when they tarred and feathered him and dropped him in the middle of a bad crack neighbourhood in downtown LA, or ask the audience at a packed stadium concert if anyone "wanted to be fisted by Marylin Manson just come backstage after the show" as a bet by Manson thinking they wouldn't have the balls to do it, and nobody would turn up if they did, and one sick f**k actually showed up backstage willing so Manson lost the bet and had to get the Ansell's on and do it. Those guys were out of control.......

His second bit of advice is so important, and not just for music, but applies to any skill really. It's so easy to hit a comfortable plateau and stop challenging yourself, but then you also stop growing.

Yes and yes. When I first started teaching, I would try to go a little out of my depth every class -- taking a risk with a new voice, new story, new way of engaging with the class. Didn't always work, but the students could generally feel the creative risk and concern and generally were more willing to risk engagement themselves. When I found myself moving into a rut and too tired to get out of it, I knew it was time to quit -- for my sake and theirs. Pushing my edges in the garden for the time being. Love Bowie and appreciate what he accomplished for all of us by following his muse.
Teaching is indeed an art. I did some teaching of small courses, and even that was difficult, but it was challenging and fun too.
I hated grade school with a passion. The teachers I had from grade 1 to 6 were all unbelievably bad! I went to about 6 or 8 schools in that time because we moved so much, and I also lived in foster homes. I only saw 1 teacher that cared about any of us or was doing a good job at all. They were all flat demeanored pedantic robots at best, and hysterical, cruel, violent pedophiles at worst. I just can't believe they were ever hired. What kind of a training system existed in Canada in the 60s?! They must have been so desperate for people that they took anyone who applied, and did no training at all.
In grade 8, at age 13, I went to a school that had quite a few very good teachers, all in one place! I was stunned! Never having seen a good teacher in the 10 or so schools I'd attended by then, it surprised me a lot! One of them, I think a geography teacher, used to do all kinds of nutty things, and we paid attention so we wouldn't miss them! That school changed me and my life. For the first time since grade one I was willing to listen and to try. I overcame the fear of admitting that I had never learned long division, and actually asked for help. They were willing to let me transfer to class that was away from my friends, at my request, because I knew I couldn't focus with them around me. I improved vastly, and instead of failing I pulled myself through. Unfortunately though, I went to 2 more bad schools and quit after failing grade 9. I did alright though, and became self educated. I wanted to attend university, but life interfered.
You sound like one of those great people who truly cared. Please know that you played an important part in their lives. I hope you are happy and healthy, and are doing what interests you. ❤

Words of wisdom from an absolute legendary original artist. David Bowie may have been a coked-up wild man in the 1970s but he remained incredibly brilliant and creative throughout, and of course he thankfully grew-out of and overcame his addiction, and became an absolute gentleman while still maintaining some level of artistry.
2 times I've heard Bowie say something right when I'm deciding to make a change in my life, and he's persuaded me both times to make that change

Knowing Bowie's experiences in the 1980's, it's clear he's speaking from firsthand experience. The guy spent the better part of a decade trying to appease the people who got into him through Let's Dance and knew that the quality of his work was suffering from it, and when he shifted back to making music for himself first and foremost it allowed him to enjoy doing what he did again.
Let's Dance is a terrific album. You can't knock Niles Rodgers. There's nothing wrong with a record you can hum and that makes you want to dance. It wasn't as though he'd released 'The Birdie Song'. It was cool, he _looked_ cool. I was an adolescent when it came out. I knew he wasn't competing with the likes of Spandau Ballet. He sounded classy, as though Roxy Music was trying funk out for a fit.
@@reesemorgan2259 Well the problem wasn't the album itself, because I agree with you that Let's Dance was an amazing pop album. Rather, the issue lied more in the expectations it set afterwards, that feeling of "well I've got this crowd now, so that means I have to appease them," which led to the self-admitted rushed job of Tonight and the well-written but badly-produced Never Let Me Down. Had he not felt that pressure (be it through his own perception or that of EMI), I'm certain that his follow-ups to the already-great Let's Dance could've been equally great (if not better) records.
@VinchVolt my first instinct was to disagree and defend David Bowie, but I actually bought Tonight and Never Let Me Down when they were released and was very disappointed. Despite what people said at the time and still say in retrospect, the Glass Spider tour he took on the road in the Summer of 1987 was insanely cool. It was deeply rooted in intellectual art concepts and that didn’t translate at all in football stadiums filled with 50,000+ drunk fans - David Bowie of all people should’ve realized that. People also dis Tin Machine, but I think that was him letting off some of the frustration you mentioned. IMHO, Heathen is really when he got his mojo back.

David Bowie was my teenage obsession. Love him.
However, I do think it is worth noting he did quite intensionally ' play to the gallery' in the 80's with lets dance etc.
I saw a documentary a few years back called " Five Years" and there were interviews with the collaboarators who spoke about him dressing and looking for production, suitable for an intentionally commercially successful artist.
That was very much what the 80's was about, but he certainly dove head first into it, and was able to coast on the back of that.
I could be wrong, but is worth putting it into context. He was also an extremely hard working individual and loved to perform.
And this is in large-part, why we love David Bowie-He was true to himself and his vision of what he should be doing.

I have revisited this advice over and over again. We are lucky to breathe the same air as him during his lifetime. Such a dream to be a part of his life I'm sure. I don't believe in magic but I do believe in David Bowie.

This is one of the first thing we should be teaching children. This is life advice for everyone as much as for artists.
This popped up on my feed after I watched John Carpenter on Colbert. He's an object lesson in exactly what Bowie is talking about here; doing his own thing, he made a bunch of great movies, a little rough on the edges maybe, but with energy and charm and commitment. Nothing he did with a studio looking over his shoulder is worth very much.

Wise words. I identify with them as a musician and a person. Bowie was a man who really learned from every experience in his life. A truly admirable person. I’m so happy I got to experience his influence, from beginning to end. Thank you, David.

This is good advice. I am a poet. I take risks in my poems frequently, and always try it differently, and disregard popular expectations. I write to please and challenge myself. I write for language's sake, not a reader solely. It is the only way to create. If you create to just turn out pulpits creations then you are simply a machine. I suppose that is alright if it is what you want. But you are a machine then, not an artist.
Bowie was a rare occurrence of talent and wisdom. He was a comet, and he changed lives in meaningful and artistic ways. He understood human nature. Like all great singing artists he knew what motivates people. Love, death, sex, and meaning. How we all play characters in a play. The man was amazing.

@@yosserhughes5418 Why should I make a stand on what I don't know? To me, that is the source of all the suffering and anger. I trust in science to liberate me from superstition and suffering. Currently science has no empirical way of determining if there is, or is not a God. To me it is open ended. I currently have no way of knowing either way. I can speculate. But speculative conclusions are not facts. It is dishonest to claim either way. It is a lie.
By what fiat do you have the right to demand I take a side? What good would it do for you or anyone to be a believer or an atheist?

I'm working on a project right now that I'm not very happy with until I watched this video. Because I just realized I'm not happy with it because my feet aren't quite touching the bottom. Now I know I need to embrace that feeling. Thanks, Mr. Bowie, and thanks to the person who uploaded this!

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song by David Bowie but I’m obsessed with this man.
And he's right. He himself led by example. He was an artist who presented himself the way he wanted to present himself creatively, be it his music or be it the visual aspect of his art. He never compromised. It was like: "This is what I do". To this day that is what makes Bowie so endlessly appealing to all those who discover his music. He will always inspire to express individuality.
For me as an artist, the hardest thing to learn was how to be authentic, and not just in private. It makes me wonder if my favorite artist will remain undiscovered, because they were nervous about putting their real self out there.
Not only that but maybe they create something unique and true to themselves but they may never be graced by a record company or social media algorithm and you may never know them.
Back in junior high school, I dreamed of becoming a rich and famous musician. Eventually, I accepted...well...reality. That realization has been _liberating!_
I explore my own experiences and emotions, _assuming_ that commercial success is simply not a part of the equation. The funny thing is that it has resulted in songs that, while I'll never be famous beyond the local scene, there's nothing like performing your own music in front of even a small crowd and seeing them, singing along to every word! The best art expresses _the artist_ and then...as a side effect...manages to somehow help someone _else_ find expression, too. _That_ is how I define success today.

God I miss him a shining gem we will never forget.
This man was so smart and so decent, and just the finest sort of artist. They say never meet your heroes, but I genuinely wish I had met him. I don't think I'd have been disappointed.
I love Bowie. This advice is a confirmation that I my own advice to ignore what people think, has always been the right decision.

I suspect that in many ways social media is the death of all creativity. In spite of the high hopes we had for it, it seems to have been the death of almost everything else that's good. Complete lack of any regulations turns everything into a shit hole,
