1990 Bass Boat. Can We Fix It?

- Опубликовано: 19 июн 2021
- I was contacted by a subscriber Ken who had this 1990 bass tracker boat, it had not been used for a long time and he did not want to see it go to waist. so he sold it to us on the cheap to make some videos on it. lets see what has failed and what its going to take getting it water ready.

What a cool guy. I bet he has some great stories to tell.
yup, him and his 10 friends on the annual two weeker !
Yeah, stories about how many pies he's had.
Smart guy for passing it on when he can no longer take care of it. To many old timers let things just sit and rot.
My grandfather did this. He had a nice 18' Mitchell with an older 115 Mariner (inline 4 I think)... he left it sit for over 20 years to the point of where it was junk.
My parents did that...had a beautiful 24' (I think it was 24') motorhome complete with a/c gennie everything and they parked it and it's trash now. 25 to 30 years at least. NOOOOO sell something? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The problem is people attach emotions to objects and can no longer make rational decisions about them. I have a few trinkets from my Grandmother (circ saw and a dehavilland desk lighter in the shape of a plane) and my dad's watch but a whole freaking motor home? lol.....
The crazy thing: When I worked construction I was travelling 2 1/2 hrs + each way, he said "you should pick up a cheap little camper for your pickup or a mini motor home and just sleep at the site.....what about yours? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOO
You make them a reasonable offer, they just get offended and end up junking it 10 years later, during which it just sat.
@@erik_dk842 I offered my grandfather to let me fix it up on my dime and he could use it if he wanted to. Nope.
I'm only 27, but disabled, and I empathize with this man greatly. It's so frustrating when our bodies don't let us do the things we want to do. Sometimes I just sit and stare at my projects, just trying to find some enjoyment in it still.

I feel that a lot of our happiness is in our thoughts
As a big guy who struggles with health problems, I can commiserate with just not being able to get around like I used to when I was younger, thinner, and healthier. I really hope Mustie can coax him into that boat for one last ride, even if he has to physically help him into the boat. No video, no pressure, just a pleasant cruise with two great guys...
It'd be like fixing up your grandfathers old ride or fathers ride when hes getting too old to even drive himself, make him happy and proud.
Absolutely Awesome Idea 👍👍
I hate to admit it but I'm right along with you on not being able to get around like I used to ....
@@PabloDiablo682 Good work mate. I'm in the same boat! Looking to lose 100lb in the next year. Keep up the new habits!
I second that emotion! I'm in same boat. Can barely make it to the mailbox & back up the driveway.
There's nothing sadder than when a man has to sell his possessions because he can't enjoy them anymore. Watching my dad sell his motorcycles one by one when I was younger was tough.
yep, sold my bass boat a few years ago. Like saying good bye to a kid/pet.
I understand what you're saying. I'm at that point where I need to start shedding stuff and its hard to decide what I can live without. But, best I deal with it now than risk injury 10 years from now.
Just what I thought at start of video.
Age and morbid obesity is never a good combo
There is sadder. The fella who skipped buying the boat he always wanted so he could pay for all the things his wife and children wanted, only to be rejected by all of them in his 60's and have them claim him to be a 'sperm donor.' Count your lucky stars brothers! Not complaining, just bitchen!
Pre-Ethanol outboards used rubber hose that desolve from the inside and leave deposits in the carbs, fuel pump and filters. To check pull off a fuel line and wipe the inside. If black deposits come off replace with new marine fuel lines. New USCG approved lines will have a white stripe running the length of the hose. Below deck fuel line is thicker wall and stiffer than above deck / outboard fuel line.
Or just use PTFE hose.
Oh the days of all metal fuel lines.....
@@twt000 diagrams changed too . i no longer run a two stoke due to new gas.
@@backwoods3214 That is a good thing. Two strokes polluted our pristine glacial fed lake. Two strokes should have been outlawed on lakes where pollution can ruin them.
@@twt000.
Amen brother.
I can remember when they outlawed 2 stroke lawn mowers then industrial interests got CONgress to rescind the ban.
Two strokes are way past due to be outlawed.
You can't buy a new two stroke boat motor anymore.
Federal law finally killed them off.
Now they need to put an age / rebuild limit on them.
In the Keys they are seriously considering a ban.
Acid rain went by by now two strokes need to be phased out.
No more parts sales will do it.
Considering how much good advice you've given me over the years, let me try to return the favor. I own an 89 Black Max 200 hp and it is without a doubt one of the greatest engines I've ever owned. Few things to keep in mind however.
First off, never start without the leg in water or on water muffs,. The impeller can literally get chewed up in seconds when it's dry. Secondly, these beasts hate ethanol fuel. Run pure gas with no ethanol and you will have no problems whatsoever. Third, the oil injection system is a common failing on these as the drive gear is made of plastic and when they get older they eventually break. Either preemptively replace the oil pump, or better yet switch to premix 50 to 1 and you'll have no worries about oil. Overall it's one of the best high horsepower, 2-stroke outboard engines ever made, if you take good care of her she'll treat you right forever. Love the channel, keep up the good work.
I said "there goes the impeller when he kicked it over the first time without muffs. Learned that the hard way once...
@@bassassin2ohseven584 Don't beat yourself up too bad. I've known several very proficient boaters over the years who handled their boats well, knew navigation rules, but still thought it was okay to fire it up at home for 10-15 seconds before they went to the lake not knowing that they were destroying their impeller.
@@fmxrider429 The impellars get brittle when they sit for years so its best to just replace it to avoid the issue when youre on the water,,if its a newer engine i doubt just turning it over a few seconds will harm the impellar,,personally i dont trust the ear muffs anyway,,im 64 and have had impellars go bad while having hose attached to engine,,best way is to make yourself a tank you can lower the lower unit in and then let fresh water run while you make adjustments to engine while its running,,A old wise man many years ago showed me that each time he puts in a new impellar he puts a little vaseline on shaft and impeller to avoid dry starts and cracking
@@charliesmith9528 - Muffs work just fine and don’t put Vaseline inside an engine.
100 percent facts bro! Yep yep! You ain’t wrong 👍 I already know!
Amazingly captivating! I own a boat, work on it a small amount and enjoy fixing the simple things. Watching you takes it to an entirely new level. Thanks for teaching me a lot and reminding me I don’t have enough tools!
I chuckle along with Mustie when the engine fires off. There is something about his short laugh, love it.
Happy Father’s Day to all. Nobody’s up yet and having my coffee watching Mustie. It’s a great Father’s Day already.

When you said "I wish machines would just understand that I'm going to keep escalating things until something breaks or it gives. Might as well give up now"... I felt that in the core of my being, all my jury rigged, mickey mouse and BFH "repairs" over the years felt that too. Nicely done, Mustie!
what a fun project. thanks for sharing your video. I love how you showed what you were doing, brought us into your work space, and how you tackled issues/problems as they came up. Iwould love to see this boat float and run again. I want to see that video!!
You have to respect a man that knows it's better to let go of something when he can no longer take care of it, over keeping it and letting it rot in the ground. Does seem like he took good care of it. Edit I'm sure I mentioned it before, when it comes to cleaners, I am a big fan of a product called super clean degreaser but it also does more than normal degreasers, I do not know if it is available in the USA but i would imagine so.
Diesel Creek used that on a forklift about a year ago.
@@TXH1138 i don't know who Diesel Creek is but I'll have a look, I know I been using it since I was a young wrencher, I first started using it on my dirtbikes to get the clay stains off the plastics when we down the messy trails fell in love with that product ever since. the only metal i don't like using it on is Aluminum it seems to turn it chalky.

Screw that. If I can't enjoy it then it's going to rot into the ground. Simple as that. Go get your own!
Best line: "I wish machine's would realize, I'm just gonna keep escalating." Me too, Mustie 1, me too. As for the snow blowers, they're just waiting for someone to start loading them up. When you do, they come out, "Those are $400 each, and once you load them, you bought them."
"Listen, part: the final step is 'you can't be stuck if you're liquid' so are you sure you want to keep playing this game?"
When will inanimate objects learn. I have fire, weight, pressure, machines to ensure you cooperate. I insist that you cooperate. I am a man with a mission.
I chuckled so hard at that quip, I want it on a t-shirt. Take my money.
Mustie I never get tired of watching your video's. You amaze me how you figure things out. You're lucky you have the tools to get the job done. And if you don't have the tools, you improvise. Can't wait to see it run and hit the lakes. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you for this video. It has Brought a lot of old memories back to me. I had one exactly like it 20 years ago before I had a car accident. I couldn't no longer get into the boat. I sure do miss it and I miss fishing. I'm now 77 years old. I sold my boat back in 2002. 😢. Have a good day
Mustie1 “escalating the situation” and talking to me (all of you too) on camera is why I love his channel. Really like the format of dropping videos on Sunday mornings - really makes my day!!
Thanks again Kevin, let's see how well your old boat comes back for us :)
Every week I look forward to his Sunday uploads.
That is a pretty clean bass boat with all things considered.
But I am much more interested in that potential major score of the free pile!
Someone just left a Mustie bait trap out in their front yard. To capture the elusive Mustie animal in the wild.
@@1pcfred hahaha that’s one way to catch the bear!
@@1pcfred That's exactly what I was thinking; he needs to look UP before approaching a pile like that to make sure there isn't a net up there.
@@OnusBones Do you think anything could deter Mustie 1 from the pursuit of a good deal? I suspect he'd walk 5 miles through a minefield in snowshoes in a quest of a free snowblower or rusted out Volkswagen.

Thanks for the series. Bought a 94 pro craft and used a lot of your video to learn. Especially with the steering components. Mine wasn’t seized completely but would barely steer. Used your methods and now it steers with one finger! Thanks again!
I learned a long time ago that nothing stops mustie from rectifying something and either getting it running or performing the way it should. That’s why I love this channel because the enthusiasm is endless and the videos are amazingly informative. I’m looking forward to the next video mustie. 😉
My thoughts exactly the man walked you right through the whole process and the camera was where it needed to be for all of the perfect shots. I can't wait to finally get my new/old boat on the water . I will do all the preventive maintenance on my black max before I fire it up .
Looks like the guy kept up on it and he took pride in. Ownership
I had a neighbor who did car repairs on the side. He mounted an aftermarket inline fuel pump to a small board and attached several feet of hose to the inlet and outlet side. He had clips on the electrical connection. He used this to drain fuel tanks before he dropped them. It worked great.
Put the inlet hose down the fuel filler and the outlet into a jerry can. Connect the wires to the battery and watch it drain the tank.
Something like this would be a good addition to your shop considering how often deal with old and dirty fuel.
In a similar vein I like the little Harbor Freight "Battery Operated Fluid Transfer Pump" for about $10 at Harbor Freight (currently on sale it seems). It just makes such fuel transfer chores easier.
I could hang around this guy all day and not have a bad moment..
I see how you work, BOY, everything falls into place and works. Reminds me of an old Coast Guard motto,: "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." Lots of improvisation and DIY engineering. I just love watching you work.
Disable the oil injection asap. Black Max's had plastic gear drives for the injection pump, and they were not good. Other than that, bullet proof motors.
not so. I worked on these black max engines for years and replaces one fiber gear. make sure the alarm is working and carry extra 2 cycle oil on board.and add it to the tank in case the pump breaks.
Never had a problem with mine!
@Buck Fiden Exactly.
I have the mariner version of this motor. Took the oil injection off and just mix the oil myself. HIGHLY RECOMMEND removing the oil injection system and just mix the oil. It is the number one cause of death for these engines if you don't. 50:1 Btw.
Use premix gas and throw the oil injection away.
DUDE! you got to get that Ariens Snow Thrower! That's right "Thrower" not "Blower" I got mine running last winter and boy did I need it! It's a real good machine that has the power to get the job done. I got the confidence to get it running from watching you're channel and it would be full circle for me to see you get it running! Looking forward to seeing the Bass Boat on the water and fish in the live wells.
I said the same thing to myself when i seen all 3 grab the aries for sure 👍
Very cool boat find! Seems like a simple restoration project. Can’t wait to see the outcome
And now we wait for part two, didn’t realize this one was over an hour long, you kept us on the edge of our seats and never lost our attention….good job.
Who is crazier? The guy talking to his audience as if they were in the room with him when making his video...or the guy who talks back when watching it? (me)
ye right :D
Both is equally crazy :P
Or the guy who buys a mercury
Was wondering about that too...even more if I try to complete his sentences...

I'm right there with you dude haha.
Mustie, I got an old bass boat last year with a stuck steering system and I had to do the same thing that you did. I had to clean out the tilt tube with a shotgun brush and solve it. I had to go a step further and use some emery cloth to clean out the rust. But it works good as new now. Good luck with your new toy.
This has been the best and most informative video I have yet to see and I appreciate you. I was given a 1986 skeeter , I'm currently replacing the floor . Mustie1 is an outstanding gentleman. I’ve bought, repaired, and then would restore bikes, dirt bikes, old racing Fourwheelers, and cars. Would get in trouble for how many items I had for sell in my empty lot by the city saying I needed a permit in my own lot. I would always include the original owners to show them and let them know that I would let them ride in it or see it once it was restored. The joy on those peoples faces were always my favorite. Loved it. With the prices of bikes, and junk cars going sky high I have to be very picky on them. In my area you see old junk and if you don’t jump on it right then and there someone else will. I would love to live in Musties area. I’ve been watching him since the beginning of his shows and glad to see he’s still doing it.
Your garage needs a resident cat to keep a check on all those pesky varmints
Yep, we ALL will get there one day where we “just can’t do it anymore!” I feel your pain brother, but you couldn’t have donated that boat to a better wrench. He’ll work through every single “tick” that thing has and it’ll perform as it should and run like new.
What a beautiful boat! Thanks for taking us along, Whatta score! My largest bass was 9 pounds taken out of a lake in Massachusetts too! I was trying to teach my youngest at the time using her “Barbie” rod and reel lol. We were only supposed to be catching sunfish with a chunk of a night crawler but that’s how some of life’s greatest surprises show themself! I thought she had gotten hung up so I tried to help her but it pulled back. We/She fought that bass for a half an hour, showed up her two brothers and mom and dad that day😬 Great reminder for today, Happy Fathers Day guys and gals pulling double duty✌🏼❤️

Great video as always Mustie. Just a reminder, turning an outboard backwards can ruin the water pump impeller, especially a dried out one. Thanks for all the fun entertainment and knowledge sharing!
Looks like a fun project! I will say though, its never a good idea to run an outboard without water for the cooling intake. There is a rubber impeller that will get destroyed if it runs out of the water. The easiest way to run it in the shop is to use a pair of engine muffs - you can then connect a garden hose and supply water to the intake on the lower unit. I'm excited to check out the rest of these videos!
I'm 100% he is going to install a new impeller ❤ he is the MAN!! He knows what he is doing ❤
I was trying to imagine Mustie, Bass fishing. But it kept turning into a "Freedom Factory" jet boat style experience.

Hell Yeah Brother but I think mustie1 can do both equally....he's calm and cool but still loves to get crazy every now and then 👍👍👍

That is a fine little diamond in the rough you got there! I feel for that dear old fellow, you can tell he really loved that boat and he took the best care of it that he could; much respect for him loving it so much to let it go to someone else so it will continue to be taken good care of. And for that, it went to the best someone else! Now, off to watch the rest of the videos, to see, not IF you can make it run and putt around the pond, but how much or how little work you have to do to make it run and putt around the pond, because running and putting around the pond it will when it's in the more than capable hands of the legendary Mustie1 😊
Dang it Mustie, I am now 100% invested. I have to see how this turns out . I was yelling "no !!" at the computer 1:15:00 in , knowing I am not going to see how this turns out today. Please revisit this soon. And thanks for everything.

Great video, I bought a old boat in April of this year, it's a 1961 15' Mobicraft and has a 1959 Johnson 50 outboard. It has been a nice project for me and I got it finished. Great video Mustie, keepem coming.
The oil injection systems on those Mercury motors are prone to failure(plastic), and difficult to repair. Most folks in my area (Cape Cod) disable the injection system and pre-mix the fuel. I would also replace the oil tank with a smaller removable gas tank you can fill easily and winterize.
YES SIR 100%, DISABLE THE OIL INJECTION & JUST PRE-MIX YOUR FUEL.
The Johnson/Evinrude systems were much worse. To the point where OMC recommended bypassing it to their customers. The Mercury setups are better. The only failures I have run into, are like mustie seen, the lines getting brittle and cracking. Either he needs to bypass the system, or replace every line. Either way will be fine for this one. I would have loved to find that score.
@@Bobbywolf64 It is not just the lines, the problem is the oil pump is driven off a plastic gear on the crankshaft. Any plastic gear this old is falling apart. Also, the plastic coupler that connects the oil pump to the oil pump drive shaft swells over the years untill it binds up in the hole in the block, which then wears and or strips out the previously mentioned plastic gear. I went through all this with my 1988 150 hp XR4 outboard. You either split the block to replace the gear, or go to premix.
Bass boats are fast. When you’re finished, it’d been fun to see you take it out on the water and see how fast you can get it going.
You’re unbelievably talented so happy for your RUclips channel I’m a loyal viewer for years and years. Cheers from 🇨🇦
The owner did an excellent job in preserving the boat. It was well covered, not in Weeds and he remembered the history of it. He did an excellent job in preserving it with the resources that he wanted to allocate to it.
Great entertainment on a wet Sunday afternoon in England nice one mustie
I would get rid of that stainless steel prop if you're going to be running this in fresh/brackish water. While they perform better than aluminum, if you hit something in the water you'll damage the shaft/seals before the prop. The aluminum acts as a sort of weak link between the gearbox. Stainless steel is of course better and won't flex, but you learn the hard way about these things!
Well nobody ask you sooooo….
That's what your shear pin is for! It breaks before something like the prop or shaft does. A sacrificial part. Always check you have the correct one. Sometimes people like to replace the factory pin with something stronger and you know what happens?
Nice seeing the boat being resurrected. I'm also happy to see you're from NH. I'm right near Lake Winnipesaukee. ❤
I really love the cassette player in it really shows what time period this boat is from!
That looks an awesome boat with all the bells and whistles by the looks of it
The done thing on all old 2 stroke Mercs is to take off the oil pump and run them on 50:1 premix! The pumps have proved to be unreliable. I believe that mercury even sell a blanking plate for the hole left in the block! Definitely worth looking into! Cheers from England!
The extent of your knowledge never ceases to amaze me.
First time watching the channel. You do excellent work! That steering sleeve thing met it’s match. Really like that boat! A little wax and buffing and it will shine like new. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Maybe you could take us with you to try it out on the water too. 😁
So far as the mouse detergent, I use peppermint oil on a cotton cleansing pad. Never had a mouse. I use it in the shed and the garage. Nice boat. Sure love to have dropped in my lap.
When he said 7 years, my immediate thought was, yeah that'll be 10 then, then Musties shows the 2011 sticker, lol, shows how long I've been watching Mustie, 7 always means 10.

You can really see his purchasing tactics. Asking specific questions. Trying to see if you'll get proper answers.
Hey man. NICE FIND! I have a word of advice on that Merc if I may. I have the same engine in Mariner flavor (everything is gray instead) on a 19 foot Procraft.. The oil system is a possible failure point which can cause the engine to run without oil. Mine has been removed and retrofitted to take premix gas only. Its a bit of a pain to fill, however the peace of mind is awesome. I use a 50:1 mix of high quality marine two stroke oil, with marine gas and a bit of Star Tron additive, and its good to go! I really love your videos man. Thanks a lot for all you do and share.

Ken. You are now VERY famous. All of Mustie1's fans love you. All 545,000 of us. Pretty deep. Thank You, Ken, and your craft couldn't be in better hands. The Beaver is cute. This boat is just Gorgeous!! (I sound like Liberace).
Having to clean out a few dirty holes so the tool i made is just a 1/4" stainless rod with a slot on the end. Put a strip of sand paper in the slot, then wrap it around the rod. Put the other end into an air grinder. High RPM of the grinder flings out the sandpaper so it is essentially a flap wheel with one flap. A few minutes of buzzing, some spray and some in-and-out motions with the rod and i am yet to see a hole that would not clean up.
I’ve been waiting for you to get hold of a boat, I’ve really enjoyed watching this!
I so enjoy your channel. Excited to watch this project develop.
