Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 75: The First Broad Strakes

  • We are learning so much from the planking process. After having cut and installed the garboard planks, we are now on to the first broadstrakes. These next couple of planks are going on right after the garboard and are also oak and need to be pretty sturdy.
As these planks are also still fairly low on the boat, we are still dealing with the stiffness of the bottom of the frames and the bronze floor timbers. This makes these planks, also a bit of a challenge to instal. Not only that, but in contrast to the garboard plank, we do not have the 90 degree angle of the rabbet on the bottom side of the plank. This means that we need to match the angle where the top of the garboard (and all subsequent planks) meet the frames. This is a constantly changing bevel all the way down the boat.
To cut this bevel quickly and efficiently, we borrowed a tip from a shipwright ;) (Thanks Lou!). We modified a skilsaw to be able to cut and compound changing bevel with the use of a clamp screw to adjust the angle of the cut as the saw is running. This has been a fantastic way to cut this bevel and has taken so much time out of the process of fitting the planks. Although, not without a learning curve.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jared is going to be rebuilding a vessel on Victoria's keel and has started a youtube channel to document that journey. You can find him at Remaking the Lady: / channel

I trust these fellows to use all the Belgian glassware necessary to carefully adjust for oxidation and portion control when converting tequila stock into cold beer, over the long course of an entire garboard. Guys you will be caulking before you know it. Please don't be offended but take some lessons before you start on Arabella. I was out on board a timber boat in 79 on the Irish Sea that had been recaulked by the completely inexperienced crew [same storm that hit the infamous Fastnet race of that year] She leaked like a sieve all her planks were working in the swells,so much so the Stars mechanical and electrical pumps were unable to cope and gave up the ghost . We only had seconds to rig the old cast iron pump set in the deck and start pumping before the water in the bilge cascaded through the open vent style inspection hatch on top of the gear box and put pay to our only source of power. I can assure you it was quite the most terrifying experience of all my years at sea, Don and I lashed ourselves to the hand rail and pumped like the very devil, waves breaking over us pulling our feet from under us. And so we pumped, I don't know for how long, but we did not tire which just goes to show the extent of our terror. Eventually someone managed to get the other pumps back on line and we made it home. Feet safely back on shore I swore an oath to myself that I would never put back to sea on that boat again. I cannot stress enough your boat will be useless without really good caulking and you won't find that out until you hit your first fierce storm. TOO LATE THEN GUYS.

    • @ahaveland
      @ahaveland 5 лет назад +2

Yep. That's terrifying! I find this fascinating, and I know this is based on centuries of experience but I'm surprised the hull is only a single skin and only the caulking between the ocean and the inside.
Wouldn't it be better to use two skins so that the planks stagger and overlap the seams so can be sealed more effectively?

I literally have no interest in sail boats but can’t stop watching your videos. The attention to detail is top notch. I was wondering if you guys ever get discouraged? I personally get discouraged easily when something requires a lot of effort to make a small amount of progress. Hats off guys, I couldn’t do it.

Interesting to read what that person said about the Fastnet race disaster. I was on one of the rescue vessels.
Great watching you guys working on Arabella. Great gesture at the end. Well done guys.

Thinking about the fact that when you cut your angles some of them were off I have an idea what may be wrong. You are using a screw (from a C-clamp) to adjust your saw. It can only push the saw into a greater angle, it can't pull it back when you straighten the saw back up. You are then having to straighten the saw without tipping the base plate off the track. Installing a spring to pull the saw back vertical will eliminate any slack when you back off the screw, improving your accuracy. Hope this helps and good job paying it forward at the end of the video. :D

I remember seeing that saw on Louis's channel and thinking all those wonderful giant ships saws are now completely useless. Your making it look easy, great video.

Nice to see you build a portable ship saw. Good job that will save lots of hand labor. Keep on moving forward.

Brace and Bit (or Bit and Brace as you call it) is so much better for putting slotted screws in! You can lean your whole body into it and apply huge torque but still have complete feedback how the screw is going.
Good to see some kiwi's visiting :)
    This is indeed sweet!

I've been watching this series out of order and I have been building up a set of questions about why and how things were being done. For me, this was the master episode. I learned about how they fit the planks, the fancy saw, how the planks are going to be sealed, why weren't all the frames put in place before the planking began, and why they don't use a power tool to drive the screws.
As an aside, I bought a yankee screwdriver years ago just because I thought the idea was cool. Alas, for me, it was useless. I couldn't get it put out enough torque to drive any screws except maybe ones that required very little torque to drive and for that a regular screwdriver worked fine by spinning the screw shank with your fingers. Also, before I started doing renovation type work, power drills and impact drivers were a thing so even if the Yankee screwdriver had worked it would have been obsolete for me.
