Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 102: Blacksmithing in Costa Rica! Part 1

  • Well, it's finally that time! Our trip to Costa Rica has come. We've been planning on this for a long time. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out for both of us to go. So Steve stayed back to get us ready for our planking party and I travelled down with Jack, Kit, Anne and Andrew to then meet up with Med for the basic blacksmithing course we planned to put on.
We've put a lot of energy into making this happen and it felt really good to finally be putting that plan into motion. We also could not have pulled this off without the help of everyone involved. Not only did Jack and Med pull off a great class, but we had so much help from everyone to get ready. I can't name everyone here but thank you to everyone at the shipyard, especially Dylan and Mariel for the planning, charcoal making and translation!
On top of the course there was so much going on at the shipyard. We watched a frame go up right after we arrived, which was really impressive to see everyone working together to make such big pieces go into places with what seemed so little effort. In this video we give you a little taste of the work down there but there is still more to come.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Thank you all for the kind comments! We would like to say that in general, the negative comments do roll off our backs. There is an abundance of wonderful people in this community and we really do appreciate that.
Part of taking on the trolls is to show that these comments are not to be allowed in general society. We are told time and again to just let them be and do their thing and not say anything. This however should not be the norm. We would like to help change this. When someone says something inappropriate it should be ok and even encouraged to say something to the person uttering those words. It is important to stand up for the people around us, be they family, friends, neighbors or even strangers. Be the good we all want to see out there!

They can't stand people being successful and thrive on chaos and contention. Pay no attention to these rancid unshowered types... When their orange fingers from eating Cheetos all day finally wears off maybe they'll go out and see the sun for once instead of being a blog couch warrior know it all. There is NO ONE who has been watching the last two years production who does not know you two are a team, Most of us watch in awe of the stuff the BOTH of you tackle every week. Agreed! However, if they wait until Arabella is complete, then this vessel will likely not be the one being worked on. The boat in Costa Rica may be substantially larger, buy they have a much bigger build crew as well. And, as the boat is meant for work instead of cruising, there is more pressure to complete it so it can get to work.

One of the most interesting aspect of the building of Arabella, for me personally is the development arc of Alix, in the beginning he was basically an amateur videographer with absolutely no wood working experience, in fact in the beginning the majority of the wood working was done by Stephen; now though, Alix is becoming a relatively decent carpenter in his own right as well as a stellar videographer. The Trolls need to sit the fuck down. You two are doing a fantastic job, its a team effort.

I had to stop at about the 3:00 mark and just walk away, because I was probably angrier than Steve at that point. Those who criticize don’t understand, and that is very apparent. To accuse Alix of not pulling his weight is ludicrous, and those of us who have watched every episode of this amazing build know that both Steve and Alix put in amazing amounts of work, each to their own strengths and talents, and share the totality of the load equally. It is very clear that the division of labor is to your mutual satisfaction.

For what it's worth, it's the nature of online commentary that 99% of satisfied "customers" don't feel the need to make any comment. I've watched every one of your amazing videos, and this is my first comment. I just don't have much to contribute to the conversation, because you guys are doing such an awesome job. But I can understand how a handful of "trolls" can get under your skin, and kudos for telling them off. You may be right that speaking up improves the level of discourse, or others may be right that trolls are best ignored, but sometimes you've just got to put your foot down, if only for your own mental sanity. No matter what anyone says, the achievement speaks for itself. Making this thing, and putting it into an entertaining and widely viewable format, is a positive contribution to the world because it demonstrates hard work, resourcefulness and persistence, which are values that transcend boats or woodworking.

You spend a 3rd of your time working on the boat, a 3rd of your time working things out, setting things up, a 3rd of your time organising things, bringing volunteers up to speed, dealing with building inspectors etc and a final 3rd living your life. Now wait a minute, 4 3rds? That's not possible! The last bit is the bit these people, who aren't there doing all of that, do actually get to do. Live their lives. It WAS NOT political or stratification or biases. All of us just wanted to experience the world. Stephen, I am so proud that you took on the trolls. I sit here, watching your videos, and I get it. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to realize what goes on. Alex had to go to Costa Rica after all the work you BOTH did for that project. Shit happens, which meant someone also had to stay home to deal with the inspector. It was bad timing. At least there were two people so that both projects/issues got handled simultaneously. Also, Alex, you rock. The quality of your video work is fantastic. You are the reason this channel is noticed. I see other boat build channels out there that, frankly, I just can't watch because either the audio is really bad, or the swinging camera makes me sea sick, etc. Together, you, Steven and Alex, had the right SETS of skills to get this project off the ground. Also, S/V Seeker put the word out about you. Maybe, people don't remember the hard times Acorn went through in the beginning. Moreover, Alex has been learning building skills. He does put himself out there to help with the boat. I love how you both have steadfastly made this project evolve. Don't listen to the neanderthals. They are underdeveloped.

Some people just don't understand teams. Everyone working on this and supporting this is amazing, and the project couldn't continue without everyone fulfilling their role. It takes a village. Thank you guys for doing beautiful work, being educators, and continuing to be an inspiration.

When Alix went to Costa Rica, and Stephen had stayed to take care of his other duties and responsibilities, Alix took on the work of two men. By no means is that a vacation! Obviously some folks just fail to think these things through properly (which I blame on the public school system for failing to teach critical thinking!). What was going to be done by two and is now being done by one doubles the workload on the one! And no slight to Stephen who had to take care of duties and responsibilities concerning the boat house. You can't sluff off the county government.
Stephen and Alix, you two men are great guys! I'd love to come and help but I am again looking for work and live too far away. Peace, Love and Happiness to all!

You guys are so incredible, and Alix is no slacker. Just blow em off and keep up the awesome work. I think I work hard, then I watch you guys and I feel rather lazy. I can't wait to see more planks going on this beautiful boat. And having your grandfather helping on the old engine has been awesome! Carry on

The scale of the Costa Rica gig is huge. The only thing that matches it is the spirit of the international wooden boat building community. It's great to know those tools are going to people who are truly motivated and eager to learn skills that'll be put to use on the shop floor within minutes. Respect

Whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut?! From the first few videos you two laid out pretty clearly that Alex's input encompasses SO much more than just working on the boat. Maybe some folks need to go back and re-watch the entire project from the start. I only wish that I could do more to support you gentlemen beyond leaving nice comments. Keep doing what you are doing, its working.

I was very interested in the smithing demonstration as I am a mechanic and come from a long line of mechanics and blacksmiths. Your work is amazing and I'm very glad so many young people are involved in learning the skills of their ancestors! Keep up the good work, your fans know your true worth!

You guys determine what is important to your project, not the viewers. People who criticise should stop watching and start building their own fricken boat. I admire what you are doing, BOTH of you... and Grandpa. Keep up the great work and the great films that document it. Be true to yourselves and if the voyeurs aren't happy, so what?
