Restoring Victoria's Knees - Episode 135 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- Опубликовано: 29 окт 2020
- Part way through the build of Arabella, we were told about a boat we should look at in Mattapoisett, MA. Although we didn't need another boat to restore we decided to go take a look and see what she had for parts. Ultimately we fell in love, she was a wreck and would have been a handful to restore but she had character and more beautiful bronze than we could have imagined. We decided that if she didn't get snatched up for a repair we would get her before she went to the scrap yard and that we did.
That boat was the very first boat we have owned and we spent many a days and nights aboard (on the hard of course) dreaming about where our project would lead. She kept us going through some hard times and just like the giving tree, she has given all she could.
We salvaged as much as we could from that old boat with the plan to incorporate much of her soul into Arabella. We are now at the point where we are restoring some of her knees to instal under the deck carlines to support the house top.
While I work on restoring Victorias knees with a could laminations, Steve works on pulling out the deck framing so that it can get sealed and varnished before being reinstalled for good.
There are also a couple announcements in this video which we would appreciate people take heed of. One about our discussion in the last video and the other to say... GO VOTE!!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Thanks for keeping non-political 👍

Alix and Steve, there is no need to explain anything, it's NONE of our business, we are just hangers on who are living vicariously through your experiences. Most of us are unable to do this due to either not having the skills, the resources or the health, so we are grateful to be able to share your journey. Thank you for sharing this with us . Once again all the best wishes from the UK.
Spot on!
+1 UK too - second that sentiment.
Couldn't agree more. Except I am currently in Vietnam.
i am from the UK tho, if it helps.
I do agree that Alix and Steve have no need to explain (and I have never asked). I do appreciate that they choose to share the details of their arrangement. Future boatbuilders might set up something similar to their working arrangement.
I don't understand why people feel they are entitled to project their opinion of how you and Steve work on this beautiful project - it's enough that you share the viewing with us. I'm glad to see you back, Alix and looking forward to watching Arabella from tree to sea.
I quite agree, they are adults after all.
My thoughts exactly, some people aren't happy unless they are causing drama, they just want to see the world burn.
You know, there was a video back when the keel was being poured where Steve told us it was his boat. I don't remember any backlash then and ultimately, its none of our business anyway. Steve and Alex chose to share this project with us and I for one am extremely grateful. In return I will watch enthusiastically and keep my opinions about it to myself.
Exactly - Team Arrabella: the more you explain things to people the more they think their armchair, myopic, perfect world opinion is legitimized . The fact is, the success of the project and the decisions you made very early on are perfectly clear each time you share a video. Success is defined by completing the task and overcoming whatever obstacles arrived before that moment. Never explain or apologize for the imperfection of life to the Internet - it only invites more unwarranted, usually irrational, and often times destructive opinion and meddling.
Absolutely agree. Alix & Steve can be proud of what they are doing. I am in awe of their patience and determination.
I have watched your videos from Australia since the start. All I see is two decent guys sharing a passion to build a vessel the way they feel. All power to them.
I love the honesty of the salvaged knees, it shows the history...
It's normal in building restoration to make the original and the fix really different, so the history is clear. I really like it :)
You guys need to let commentors go. People complain , take sides, and argue armchair theories but have no leg to stand on. Untill they are there doing it their negative criticism is useless. You guys do it your way we will all support you no matter what the annoying/negative commentors say.
Hear, hear!
I agree. You do what your heart tells you and stick to your guns.
Amen Brother, Amen
Deaftones Dsm, some peoples comments are posted as to be helpfull. NOT, HARMFULL!
@@stevenr8606 then they can be positive. The comments im speaking of ARE NEGATIVE CRITICISM. The comments that are only worms to get into Stephen and Alix's head. They do not need to pay attention to these people. We as humans go to the negative period. So if they and us can acknowledge this and ignore these comments we will be happier. Alix and Steve need to do their thing and ignore anyone complaining, telling them how to/why, and just nagative critism . Funny thing is this loud negative group is tiny percentage of their viewers. Acknowledging this small group only empowers them and hurts The project. So maybe dont commemt with not thought out replies thinking you made some huge point.
My Dad said “you are never going to make everyone happy.” What you guys are achieving is incredible! It is an honor and a joy to watch your progress. Let the “ney-sayers” write their drivel; don’t waste precious time worrying or responding to them. Onward! Thank you
So nice to see both of you working together on Arabella. Building a boat as I have done numerous times is an exercise in Jubilation and depression. You sit in a chair moaning about the mistakes you have made and you revel in the accomplishments. It is an exercise in psychoanalysis, it is a life changing task that tests your fortitude and mind. Bravo to both of you in staying friends and building a great double ender that can sail every ocean and sea on this earth. It is nice in this age of carbon fiber and foils to see a wonderful wooden boat that goes back to yesteryear and can take on places new boats fear to tread. I have watched from the beginning and I see the dedication to task that few builders have. Keep going and blessing on you and your boat from Israel.
Thank you very much for that wonderful comment!
yes indeed, this very much a shared sentiment, so eloquently put!!!
Well said, Sir
Yes indeed well said!
Among others that have already mentioned this, I too would like to express my gratitude for you sharing this experience, and it is not anyone's place to comment on how you conduct your business/project. Alix, you seem a little lighter and brighter coming back from your vacation, if you don't mind me saying so. It's really great to see you back in the boat house!
We all know Akiva is gonna be the real owner.
My boat done yet? My boat done yet?
nah, Akiva don't care about the boat, he just wants it out of his way so he can catch the squirrel easier.....
When I walk through a forest now, I'm always looking for trees which have good knee material.
Well said Alix! Ben, loving the music and loving the way you keep it separate from the narrative; makes such a difference, love the space you create for the production to breathe!
I just enjoy watching nice people working on a long term project and seeing that project develop and evolve. Alix, those knees will look great. Part of Victoria will be at work and afloat again.
It's still off in the future but I can't to see all of Vicky's brass and bronze fittings installed.
I love the look of the knees . I can see Victoria in them and that’s dead cool. Live on Victoria!
This project is something I look forward to each Friday as I'm bed ridden. Wish I was there planing boards. Love this channel and this journey!
I helped my best friend build the race car of his dreams over a number of years. Never once did I assume I was getting a piece of it. It’s about the time together. No need to explain Alix, I know exactly how this works! Welcome back and can’t wait to see this house top come together!
But Steve and Alix, "I am an anonymous internet user who knows not one damn things about building a boat shouldn't I get to tell you what does and doesn't work, and how you two guys should build it?" We deserve nothing, the fact that you are willing to share, and let us view your lives is AWESOME. Build your boat HOWEVER you want to build it. If you want o use balsa wood hell it is your boat go to it! No more pandering to silly people that know nothing. Keep on keeping on enjoy your build and if you keep posting I;ll keep wathcing.
I like the split screen shots showing both of you working in different areas.
I like the restored knees; the contrast in the woods emphasize their origin in Victoria. Well done!
Thank you Scott for all the great drawings of Arabella.
Big love to the humbleness and humility of you two. Thank you for the oasis of humanity ❤
Oh, I love fall. It is soooooo beautiful there.
Thanks for posting and sharing. I am watching for whatever happens with Victoria’s knees with interest.
"Alix is leaving, he's the villain!"
"Oh no, Alix won't own the boat, Steve is the villain!"
Gotta love the drama 😂
Actually NOT! I hate drama except on stage.
And here I thought this is a how to video of a guy building a boat, and not a Hallmark Special...
It is so nice to hear people see this! We've been trying so hard not to add drama to the videos... it's not there. But we get overwhelmed with comments and emails about this stuff. We're just building a boat!
@@AcornToArabella And a mighty fine boat that is...
@@AcornToArabella No ones mentioned the evil video editor absconding to open a movie house... Or have they? 🤔
I fully expect Steve to be front and center working on "Bark to Brunhilda" in ten years as the second ship you two build together.
I love the split-screen views. Doubling down ! Thank you
Over the years you both appear to have a great project partnership on this build. Glad to see you both back together working on Arabella! The ability to sail on her would be the BEST compensation.
How could anyone think Steve is a villain!? He comes across as a great bloke.
I think Victoria's knees look fantastic and will look awesome with a lick of varnish.
In regards to getting drills into tight spots, there is several right angle drills on the market in cordless or pneumatic .
Arabella is looking great guys, be very proud of your work and hold your heads high!
Alex, this project and your friendship will be intact because you both got into this knowing exactly what was involved, no grey areas of who owns what. Others need to take a leaf out of yours and Steve's book and get stuff done. Awesome as always.
I can't even fathom how anyone can view the way either of you are approaching this mammoth project and suggest that one of you is a villain! You're both doing what is right for you, whilst tackling something so gargantuan, and sharing it all with us. I reckon we should all sit back and appreciate what we're being given here.
Your craftsmanship is always first rate, but those deck beam assemblies really look amazing.
The Wooden Boat Experience is a channel totally worth watching, one of my favorites!!!
Every content creator will probably tell You that it is impossible to predict which actions or words are going to be troll-food , no matter how many hours You have under Your belt. I am sincerely happy to have found Your channel and am grateful that You are letting me take part in this incredible journey You have embarked on. Thank You for sharing!
I have enjoyed your channel for a while now. I have enjoyed watching all the work and craftsmanship. Today I wanted to say 100% respect for today’s opening statements!! Respect for one another and civic duties!!
I for one don't care what others say or do. I just enjoy watching the progress of the build. Happy the 2 of you are back working on it! Awesome show!
The PSA’s were very well done. Thanks for including them.
Thank you for telling us about the ownership of the boat - I've been wondering about that for years. You have such a wonderful project - thank you for sharing it with us!
Good to see the team back together. I couldn't care less who owns the boat, as long as you two are happy with the situation.
May Arabella see many years of service.
Cheers!
Can’t wait to see the cabin go up!
Also, it’s not like Steve is going to say ‘thanks for the boat, bye’. They’re both going to sail it.
You are looking well Alix, great to have you back.
My father who in Jan. 2015 passed away at seventy-three I know would have camped out somewhere near you as he was born in an era of wooden boats and was frustrated with what Roger C. Taylor called Clorox bottle boats. He did get a chance to work on Cyrano, which I know he was very proud of. It's also how we got a full set of cast iron skillets. Up until the late seventies he had a Sea Bright Skiff. when the single cylinder engine finally failed, he upgraded to a Onan two cylinder put kept his pull rope to start it. In essence I think my dad was born either to early or to later and he would be very proud of what you two are doing and Leo over on the west coast. Thanks for letting me ramble...
Sounds like someone we would have enjoyed meeting :)
This boat is already a thing of great beauty.
The comment about the dovetails harkening back to a time when the material/labor equation was flipped in favor of wood/muscle versus the metal fasteners was insightful. I'm sure the mechanical advantage, or lack thereof, going into end-grain is also accurate. But the historical angle was compelling.
I have been admiring your cooperation ever since I started following the project. Thanks for explaining how it was set up. You will have great credentials once you start working for someone else or start your own project. See one, do one, teach one. The best way to learn and pass on knowledge. Great to have you back!
Great to see you back Alix, and a beautiful salvage of the knees. You both do amazing work and I have seen major gains in your craftsmanship as the journey grows.
Anyone who has watched from the beginning knows it was ALWAYS Steve's idea to build Arabella. Alex was blessed & fortunate enough to be invited to help as well as having a friend like Steve. Steve is the original creator & Alex came along as the mid-wife to help bring this dream to reality. The trust & respect between these two men show the love and deep bond of their friendship together. You guys are doing an awesome, incredible job that you both will take great pride in your workmanship.
Came for the knees, stayed for the PSA. You guys sound like very good friends. That's a rarity in this world and you are both very fortunate to call each other friend.
Oh, yeah, VOTE!
The sweeping overhead view from stern to bow was a nice shot.
Loud and clear!.....thanks Alix!
Hi guys, love this build. Love how you take it one day at a time. Drama? What drama. Anybody up in arms needs to get their own lives on the go. Thanks for being a couple'a regular Joe's on the go.
The knees going to be a great talking piece. Love them
Great PSA's. I look forward to every Friday because of ya'll. Keep up the hard work!
Honestly I don't care who owns the boat. LOL I'm just grateful you guys are on youtube taking us all along on your journey - living, learning and building.
My favorite show. As an old sailor and tradesman I appreciate your efforts. I luv your videos and editing and songs . Keep moving forward fellas..
Welcome back Alix, good to see you back.👍🏴
Just a tip, Alix. When turning spindles, start work at the tailstock end and work towards the headstock, without going back to the tailstock end of the work. You'll get less chatter, and less chance of breakage if you do it that way around.
Thanks! I actually don't know much about lathe work. I had actually shot a bit where I looked at the camera and said "now don't go crazy on the comments, I'm not professional on the lathe!" haha but I guess Ben thought that wasn't needed. Any tips are very much appreciated!
MikeAG333... yup, I learned that the hard way.
Another trick for getting a uniform diameter is to get the spindle close to size then tape a quarter sheet of sand paper to a block of wood. Working from tail to headstock in a few successively finer grits will make it perfectly sized and as smooth as you want it. For dowels, I never go finer than 120 grit... that improves glue absorption.
Now these are the comments we need to see people. Your positive input to Alix will now help me in my wood turnings.
Thanks for the input.
@@alexfullmer4707Well spotted Bruce!
Something I did see Alix with your lathe work at @10:00 is your tool and rest placement.
For best effect you want the cutting edge of the tool contact the work level with the line between your centres. You were cutting at the top of the dowel.
As for the rest, set it as close to your work as you can, and just below the line of centres so that when the tool gets added, the tool is at the line between the centres.
Have people been commenting negatively about the ownership arrangement? That's too bad. For your true followers, there has been no quandary.
Thank you for being awesome regardless of the haters.
Long time subscriber and I enthusiastically support your call to vote.
Vote like your life depends on it, because it may...
I would like to say this is an awesome thing you guys do. 15 years ago no one shared their lives like this and it's still a new life style, I say you have to live your life and don't let the trolls dictate your feelings and the direction of your channel. Again thanks for providing awesome content!
It's about the build. That's why I am here. Enjoy watching guys hone your skills and work through the process. Alix,no better way to hone your skill then on the job training. Your knowledge will take you where ever you want to go when Arabella is sailing the 7 seas. Keep on keepin' on gents! I love the banner. "The beatings will continue until moral improves"
Alix and Steve; don't you two sometimes miss the early days of the project when the biggest "channel scandal" was when the weekly video intro music got changed and some "chowder heads" lost their minds???!! Hahahahah DD
It is so awesome to see 2 friends stand beside each other... this is the true meaning of friendship. Ignore the fluff and as you have value the friendship above all. So many times friends are lost because of the bull#### from people who have nothing better to do than try to destroy what they cannot have. Kudos to both of you.
The explanations in the last two videos actually have been really helpful. Not that we deserve to know about your personal lives, but all my questions were answered. Well done.
Great work on the knees from Victoria Alix. There will be some who find the laminations an affront, but personally, those laminations are like fine framing around a treasured family photo. They highlight the original pieces so everyone who comes aboard Arabella will be aware of their significance. As usual another excellent video gentlemen. Thank you for the reminder to vote. Take care, stay well and keep making Arabella beautiful.
Thank You Alix...truly it's amazing that you and Steve have come together on Arabella in such an altruistic way...It speaks volumes about who and what you both are about...not many people get to experience that...I've got to think that the negativity comes from the "IT"S ALL ABOUT ME" and entitlement mentality that is so pervasive in our society today.
I love the boat build. Glad to see you two back working on the boat together. I have been watching since the beginning.
People throw a lot of shade. Ya'll are doing good work! Thanks for another great video
Politicians can learned a lesson or two from you guys. I like the restored knees because they bring character and conversation to the boat. Looking forward to the coach house being done.
You three are great to watch, as well as your visitors. I'm working up plans for an ultralight. You all gave me the inducment to build a like project.
Dudes, you guys are doing it! Forget what others say. Your boat, your project, your decisions.
Steve, a villain. LMAO. That made my day!! Are we talking Thanos or a Bond villain? Will he be getting a Persian cat?
He will also need a black patch over one eye to stay in character.
@@larrykeenan598And a parrot.
"Do you expect me to talk Steve?"
"No! Mr Bond I expect you to die!"

Well at least it answers the burning question of what do Super Villians do when they are not trying to take over the world. They build boats!!
I've just caught up with the current state of things after binging the videos for a few weeks. It's awesome to see how far the progress on the boat has come (and how much still is to come of course). Great job! Onto many more adventures, both on- and offshore!
I can't believe that you guys have to explain your info and relationship around building this ship, as far as I'm concerned it was Steve's project and 2 very good friends are rebuilding a piece of history together , and any details around financial compensation is between Steve and Alex, and the end result is the 2 of them sailing this beautiful boat together interacting with each and enjoying the endless hours of work and sweat, them and countless others have put in
Hello Alix, 1st....Welcome back. 2nd.....Thank you for both your PSA. Especially the 2nd one. Happy trails through the journey of building Arabella.
This is what real friendship looks like.
One Fair Day while on a mooring in French Polynesia, these two will wonder why anybody gave a damn who owns the boat.
Unless of course they fall out, then it’s good that there is no ambiguity about who owns the boat. Lawyers won’t get rich! 👍
Honestly, that stuff never crossed my mind. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and am loathe to pry into the why and wherefore of any body else's personnel arrangements. You guys seem to work well together and I can see that you are certainly gaining a great deal of knowledge. Four plus years of boat school. Anyway, I was surprised that you had to deal with it but, you did it in a very sane manner. I appreciate what you guys are doing. Cheers.
Dear reunited acorns 😁
👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always. Victorias modified knees work/look really fine for me too. Additionally nothing is/was wasted and you always have a story to tell.
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all involved life forms (humans and dogs).
A lot of people think the journey begins when the boat hits the water, but the real journey started at conception . I don’t even own a boat so why watch ? I build a lot of things, your channel actually is calming to watch. Nice job guys.
Once they've finished building Steve's boat, they then get cracking on a boat Alix had planned all along, like a series of Mighty Car Mods. Once they're both completed they get them dyno tuned and take them to the local race track for an epic battle.
I love everything about this comment.
I've been watching Arabella being built for a couple years now... And seeing the seasons change in the background, from summer to fall to winter to spring is a thought provoking reminder how incredibly dedicated you guys are. Beam after beam, board after board, screw after screw... It is patience immaculate. Wonderful stuff.
Started watching this channel as a story of a wooden boat. Keep watching it because it also is the story of a great friendship.
Love the split screen sequences (nice work Ben).
It's looking good! All of you are doing an awesome job. It has been a very interesting project to follow. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve been following this channel since the keel-forging. I’m an attorney by profession, so there’s always a part of me that wonders about how the principals agree to set up the terms of a project like this (and whether they covered what I'd see as the essentials) but I’d never dream of seeing anyone here in a negative light, let alone volunteering my opinion about it. Welcome to the internet and "Michelangelo, you missed a spot" syndrome.
For what it's worth, I see a project animated by hardworking, creative people doing their best and I enjoy the videos. Hand salute and I look forward to seeing Arabella on the water.
Liked the flyover aft to fore. Nice touch.
You've done it the right way from the start. Setting our clear expectations from the start between the two of you on how the project would work. I'm glad to hear it! Keep up the great work.
Thank you Alix for explaining the project share from your perspective.
I’ve been a fan of both of you through, not doubting either, but I must admit Steve’s announcement of ownership earlier caught me off guard and diminished my sense of you two as partners even though I knew neither of you saw it that way. Hearing this further explanation removed that irritating back-of-mind worry.
You didn’t owe any of us the explanation, but it was a gift and encouragement regardless, allowing a return to full enjoyment of your friendship and the work. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful project. I love being able to live your dream vicariously. You are both champion blokes
As an entrepreneur I understand the difficulty of paying attention to the fans of a project and balancing that with my motivation due to people’s negative feedback. We’re using a buffer person now, that gives us a feel of where the fans are while keeping the specific comments from playing on endless record in our heads and sapping our motivation. Anywho, just a suggestion from the peanut gallery. Love you guys and your work. Hope you’re well.
Nice shipwright work as always and the PSA is timely.
I know that you have both done alright apart, but together you become great. Your dynamic hardworking friendship is a pleasure to watch. I shed a tear of joy seeing you both relax into your friendship again. It is a true pleasure watching you proceed in your endeavors. Best wishes from Denmark
I have zero problems with how you two decide about the title and ownership of the boat. I don’t think Steve has taken advantage of anyone. I think he’s terrific in telling us viewers and then showing us what he’s doing to make his dreams come true. Also, it makes complete sense that he would own the title. His property, his trees, his great grandfather’s tools.
Besides, I’d bet he’d be ok with taking you and anyone who helped him along the way to build the boat on a nice cruise trip. I enjoy your honest wholesome channel. Keep the videos coming, even after the build is finished. We want to see you guys sail off into adventures.
Good PSAs Alix. Good to see you back and the excitement and sincerity in your eyes is evident.
My favourite channel I love your work and the calm vibe about all your vids. Retaining some history from Vicky is more than worth the effort you have taken to restore those knees. If I was even on the same continent I would be pestering you for volunteer work. From a mechanical engineer you have my respect.
The only thing better than having a boat is having a friend with a boat!
Why is it so satisfying watching you guys work your magic on that boat? It makes no sense but it meets some need I have, deep inside, to see stuff being made. I just love this channel!
The old, Friday, before lunch ring on my laptop...Yepeee, great timing. Great to see you guys back together...cheers...rr Normandy, France
Great job! Hadn't watched an episode for a while... but the advancements are remarkable.
I was surprised and then appalled that Alix felt the need to make his little speech at the start of this Episode.
Speaking as an armchair boat builder to all those critical armchair boat builders who felt the need to offer an opinion on the relationship and arrangement between Steve and Alix, I have a few words.
MIND YOUR OWN GODDAM BUSINESS.
These two people are grownups and their arrangement is their business solely. You have disrespected both of them by your presumption that your advice would be welcome.
Steve and Alix, you should just ignore those critical commenters.
Your boat building project in a magnificent and inspiring enterprise. Inspiring to we armchair viewers who for our various reasons don't feel able to tackle such a project. Your project is inspirational. Ignore the critics.
Gary LeLacheur
Mate, you are right in so many ways! I always saw it as a collaboration between two mates using resources they had access to and funds they had available to build something to take them on an epic journey! Who payed for what and when was not a factor!
There might be no need to make this comment ,since so many others have made the point already. The arrangement between you two is your business. Why anyone else feels compelled to speculate on such things is an endless source of fascination for me. Alix is bang on about the knees, all the required strength is retained and they will be an enduring reminder of the boat's heritage.
Surprised people were thinking Steve was a villian. I like to add that Alix and Steves civility is to be commended. Thank all of you that are a part of this project, great work.
