OH TROY, WILL YOU EVER MAKE IT!!!! lol Been loving your videos for some time now (subscribed early last year on my other channel). They are very informative and real. U r right so far has been hiking trip, not a paddle. Your statement about being careful not to get injured in anyway as you go solo is oh so true. It can end your trip and maybe future endeavors all together. Can't wait 4 episode 7. Troy, say hello to Maddy and give her more of the cheese next time bro!! GO TROY GO!!!

I checked out the map to see where you went wrong, and I saw something. Had you pulled out your map right when you discovered the mistake, might you have taken the canoe right into Opeongo, and paddled up to a short (maybe 1km) portage right into Proulx, bypassing the 1330m and the 3085 altogether?
Anyway, thank you for leaving this in. Your candor is a valued addition.

You should get the Source Ultra Durable Heavy Duty Boat Kayak Canoe Dolley Trolley Trailer Cart (or something like it). It is foldable. It is made of sturdy but lightweight steel structures and rubber tires designed for long haul loads, without falling out of balance. The cart is not bulky and can be folded flat and stored. You can put your pack in the canoe, strap the wheels on and pull/push it where you want to go. Just a thought.

I recall doing the golden staircase about 15 years ago... was absolutely brutal and the path was completely overgrown. Fantastic lake though and completely isolated.

Maddy is so well behaved. I wonder how she knows to stay on the trail like that? When I walk my dogs, one is good, but the other leaves the trail to chase squirrels, birds, and once even a leaf on the wind.

Kat S. She really is a great trail companion. She has never been one to stray too far and generally likes to keep me in sight and to know where I am at all times. We have another dog now as well that I'm sure will be showing up in some videos named Lucy. Hopefully she'll have taken a few pointers from her big sister :)

i also always leave my watch behind. its part of how i get into the nature. also i have never ever got to a portage and not checked my sign for proper lake. i cant believe u said "what lake is this?" and then went back without checking the portage sign lol. aweful mistake but lesson learned lol. that most have felt terrible lol

I almost fell victim to hypothermia on a solo canoe trip once. Another time, I almost drowned when riding a motorcycle beside a creek, and I fell into the creek with the motorcycle on the back of my legs and my feet tangled in tree roots. That was 20 yrs ago. "Solo" is not safe. As an 18yr paramedic, I wouldn't think of doing anything like that without a buddy anymore. I've recovered several bodies of solo adventurists over the years.

Seriously jealous. Is there any merit to trying to carry both the canoe and backpack on the long hauls as far as possible and then dropping one and coming back to get it, versus just going the entire way with one or the other?
Great dog, she has point for sure. Great companion and great security...I get the feeling she would take on a bear for you. Love the videos, thanks for sharing.

@townkevin59 I've never encountered a bear on the trail. If you ever did and were carrying your boat you would be in good shape since the bear would see you as a large, formidable foe and wouldn't want to risk messing with you. Although, the likely hood of having serious troubles with a bear in any situation are very, very slim anyhow.

MaddyTheGoose When you found out that you took the wrong portage, how come you didn't look at your map? if you notice you could have kept your carry to opeongo and then go into proulx with only 2 similar carries and i dont think you would have lost as much time as you did

    Hi Troy!
I just found your videos and it makes me miss the BWCA (I'm originally from Minn, now in CA). Anyway' they're great. I have a question about taking a dog or dogs with on a canoe trip. With regard to how many animals are watching you...Don't you worry about Maddy getting tangled up with bears (or something else) on the portages? She loves it! Give her a hug for me.
These episodes were uploaded 5 months ago....do you have plans to do more?
    I hope that's the case because I can't wait.

if you think that going on the right portages is hard in the park you should try tripping in kipawa, now that's hard

Troy, love the videos and have learned quite a bit from following your trip with my Algonquin map in hand.
Curious why once you found yourself on Opeongo, why you didn't head to the short 310m portage and Proulx Lake to the Crow River?

Hi! I'm really enjoying your trip, looks like a great time. Hope this doesn't sound like a smart ass, but, have you ever thought about a portable, packable wheel cart? The trails look pretty smooth and it may work nicely? Best, Boomer

Maddy is for sure a good and fun trail partner. I was thinking of taking my dog out on a day canoe trip. For you doing such long trips, What do you carry for her to eat? How often per day do you have to feed her with all that activity?

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  8 лет назад +1

+Joe McCranie I bring two cups a day for her dog food as well as some treats like pigs ears and/or rawhides. She also gets a little of my food here and there on these trips.
