I love my little D21! Bought it last year and still drive it every day. I was lucky enough to find a superbly clean example, a 97 single cab XE with 57k miles 5 speed with AC. And it is for sale for anyone interested ;)
nearly bought one of these a couple years back for a grand, but when I showed up to check it out, the entire interior had been stripped and what remained inside was a hackjob, rat's nest of wiring in the previous owner's attempt at tracing an electrical issue...needless to say i walked away from that one... Glad to see the Hardbody getting some love on your channel. Keep up the good work, David!
Braking issue is either worn suspension LCA, Wheel bearing, or sticking caliper; Shifter issue is a possible teflon cup bushing at the end of the shifter is worn or not installed; Drop the truck with drop spindles and lowering blocks (Your wheels are the incorrect offset and will interfere with your fenders when dropped) the KA24 will out torque an SR all day, There are parts to make a KA24 run with more power...Thorley headers, Cold Air Intake, Turbo Kit, Cams, heavy Duty Rods, higher compression pistons, better exhaust system, etc....Nissan Motorsport was the source back in the day and all the parts had factory p/n's that could be purchased over the counter at any Nissan dealership...My 86.5 Hardbody is slightly lowered, has headers, intake, ported heads, cam, ignition, oil cooler, custom 2.25" exhaust...Engine is a Z24i, the KA24 predecessor! Clocking 427K miles and still running
The Ka24E is a great engine :) People whining about the low hp, but it's awesome, i drive the nissan terrano 2 (in europe it's the 2nd Generation of the d21) with right now 920.000+ km and it's my dayli (prove on my channel) btw the engine came from the 240sx us version and the transmission from the 300zx only with the option to put it in 4x4
This was the video that brought a Nissan Hardbody to my attention. I remember seeing this years ago and my grandpa so happed to have one in his back yard and gifted it to me. This truck was a vehicle I wanted that I knew would be possible for me to get as a first car but receiving my grandpa’s old work truck that I didn’t know he had was a gods gift.
Yes especially the V6 version of these trucks. Got 371,000+ on our king cab especially if that VG30E motor came with the 5- speed . These engines can handle about 400 horsepower if running boost no internal work needs to be done virtually..these are the #2 in toughness and reliability. The #1 would be the original Toyota Hilux truck.. that's why it is a sin to scrap any kind of mini truck especially D21 Nissan HardBody 4x4s lol cheers👍
I own one with the 3.0 v6. Most gutless truck ever owned, and had since it was new. Had a Toyota with the 22re motor and it run circles around this pos. Reliability is excellent, just transmission sloppy, transfer case is to high geared, weak suspension and front driveline.
I drove a 97 hardbody 2wd shortbed for 7 years, paid $250 for it. I lowered it and put exhaust on it and threw some chevy 6lugs on it with low pros. Best truck ive ever owned! Its was super basic, no AC, no power steering. Had one belt for the alternator lol Drove it till 280,000 miles before the 5spd finally gave out. As much as i hated to i scrapped it for more then i paid for it. I Still own a 86 1/2 hardbody 4x4.
This reminds me of a single cab ranger. I have an extended cab ranger with a small block and a race/drift everywhere. Small trucks are a lot more fun than big trucks in my opinion.
I have had many. My first was a '86 D21 2.4 NAP-Z which had 8 spark plugs 5spd 2wd. Second was a '95 D21 King Cab SE 3.0 4x4 5spd. Tons of fun in that truck offroading. It was one of the few that came with the Nissan Factory Clutch style locker in the rear and a LSD in the front. Third on was '91 3.0 SE King Cab 2wd. It was set up very stock looking. Did upgrades to the front and rear suspension with Energy Suspension Polyurethane bushings all the way around and swaybar kit front. A very common problem with these trucks with steering wheel vibrations around 40 to 50 mph is the drag link and tie-rods. I am currently on my fourth D21 also a '91 but 4x4 King Cab 3.0 SE that I am looking to project and possibly tos a couple 1 ton axles under hopefully this summer. Hope your buddies truck build goes AWESOME! 🤙
i have rear wheel drive and i go off roading all the time and i have the 4x4 too but honestly the rear wheel preforms just as well on the trail. the ultimate truck.
Dick Stroke me and my buddy went and got his second one drove 2.5 hours to get an black top sr and got back to his house and it took us about 8 hours to do it pretty much same approach to doing the sr swap into a s13
I am directly against people going out and making these things drift missiles because no small trucks like this that don't die are not made or sent to the U.S. anymore and people will destroy them. I want to try and keep this part of automotive history alive.
Jaster the minitruck people will keep them alive trust me, I intend to buy one and keep it forever. And many other people have a love for them and the Toyota Hilex and all other minitrucks alike. These trucks will never disappear completely.
Ibuki slamming them is not keeping them alive. I mean stock little trucks that you use as a no nonsense beater that won't die. They certainly are dying and even more so in the U.S. where the chicken tax keeps them out.
Jaster yeah I guess if you consider turnin them away from stock as killing them then they will die, but Ik alot of people use em as lil farm trucks and dailys cuz they're great on gas and can be loaded up, I see em in stock form all the time just cruising around, I take pictures of em all the time and post em to Instagram because theyre a dream of mine to have. They aren't dying as fast as hou might they they are.
Ibuki Maybe in your neck of the woods but where I live, the only way you see many in a gathering is if go to the car grave yard. Brings a tear to my eye every time. Had an old as hell toyota pick up on a farm before they took the Tacoma name and it ran for 500k before finally giving up the ghost and spraying oil and coolant all over the engine bay.
Jaster them things will run for almost ever if taken care of its always sad to see ANY minitruck in a Car Graveyard like you said they should be preserved a bit so that we can look back on them as they are some of the most amazing machines out there. But I always feel that even if a minitruck breaks down you can give it new life with a heart swap.
Plenty of times I get my 88 hardbody w/ the 4 cylinder up to 65 or 70 easy. No tachometer and an unreliable speed gauge. With a buddy next to me she went up to about 90 once. Great truck
david I missed you at import this year in Atlanta loved to see the 240 though I was actually going to try to show you my 89 Nissan hardbody that I use off road it's quite ridiculous looking. love the reviews man. keep up the good work.
this ^ is 100% true . i had to get fully adjustable upper control arms to fix the bumpsteer and terrible alignment on mine worth it to me but it cost 400$ for those which are made by beebani customs in the infamous nissan website to look them up
I had a '91 Hardbody for over 20 years, put over 200,000 miles on it, towed a popup camper all over the western USA, and just beat on it. I finally wore it out. Probably the best truck I have ever owned.
I have a 95 pathfinder with the V6. Man! You wouldn't think it can drift but, it sure can and it's predictable too. Also has shocks and springs with plenty of after market suspension parts.
I've definitely towed far over double the weight of my 1995 hardbody many times. when you see those on site trailers at worksites thats what my dad used to tow back and forth from our land to a few counties a way to hunt. he took one of those and turned it into a camper. and he's also towed a trailer with a four wheeler (atv/quad) 4-5 55 gallon drums filled with corn and tons of hunting equipment and then in the bed 100 pound bags of lye completely filling the bed. I don't know the weight of all that but when I was little I was always amazed at how much we used to tow. I now have the truck and its now 22 years old and all that its ever had replaced are thermostats a radiator and starter motor twice. never a single engine problem. at this point I would like to have the engine rebuilt because of its hard life but its still a runner and would run for a lot longer as is. its starting to burn a decent amount of oil and doesn't have the smoothest idle but its also not that bad. these are probably the best pickup trucks ever made
You should solid axle swap it and throw some nice 33"-35" tires and keep the lift as low as possible. If the engine blows . Swap in the VG30E V6 it's easier to do than a swap from a different car or truck. But if a swap is a must i would say the stock V6 engine or some kind of turbo diesel like from a Mercedes-Benz or a Cummins 4bt. Just food for thought. Cheers 👍
I have a1995 d21 2wd. It's great for anything. It's my second d21. The first, it was my haul ass streetracer. Fun af. But it still took me off road. A slight homemade factory lift on this 2nd one, it passes most 4x4s in the mud and snow . Oversized 4x4 tires. Neither one left me stranded. Great trucks. And also, I moved from okc to Lubbock tx. 14 ft trailer and from the cat scales, 10950lbs. Thru the canyon. And 368 miles, run 70 most of the way
video was nice but there is one thing wrong with it you got the years wrong on the part where you started talking about the frontier it wasn't till 98 they made the frontier the last year of the hardbody was 97 but overall it was right I'm a enthusiast of the hardbody I currently own a 93 4x4 extended cab with the front bumper for a 97 on it
Had an '86 1/2 when I was 17. Dropped to the ground (5" rear 4 1/2" front drop), put a stupid stereo in it. A friend and I learned how to pain putting scallops on it. Great little truck.
I fawkin hate those stripped interiors with drift parking brakes, sparco seats, the color purple and the stupid steering wheel, jesus christ just take care of the interior
If you want a drift platform don't even bother with anything 240sx related anymore people want too much for what they are, what people should really look for is a 350z if they wanna go Nissan
They actually made D21 hardbodys thru the 97 model year and didn't start the frontier until 98.. Not trying to sound like a dick just wanted to correct what the owner said. I have a 97 4x4 5spd 130k miles AC everything works great little truck, if anyone wants to buy it hit me up 2200 obo.
StrictlyE36 Oblivion smoke shop LLC he also said the 89 like it was the first but thd first year was actually 86 the 80s models also came with the Z engines instead of the KA so most people don't care as much about em
My first truck I bought new was a 97 Nissan hardbody and it was a bad ass little truck and wish I still had it!! I took that thing every where and I took it off road a lot and never had a problem!
My grandfather is the first and only owner of this exact truck. I drove it for about a week. love those trucks. and 5th gear 60 at 3000? I did 80 at that in the truck
My dad gave me one of these when I started college to motivate me to get out of it. I hated the truck, but it made me want better for myself.I drive a lifted silverado on 35's now but yeah, you just need gas and oil for these things and they run. It's sitting in a field now because it's used to haul wood, and still runs.
Actually it would be the other way around - the American 240SX is a Hardbody in disguise because I believe everywhere else in the world had a different set of NA only engines for the 240SX since everywhere else got at least one turbo version except North America.
I own a 1992 Nissan hardbody d21. It's been in the family since 1992 brand new. My father passed the truck onto me and I can not wait to build my mini truck laying on frame with 20s!
My best friend had one of these in high school , It was lowered on wide tires . Looked pretty cool , and just to clear things up i haven't been in school since 1989 these were new then .
Got a 91 2wd base that just ticked over 130k org miles with 4 cylinder that's my daily driver and I can still get it up to 85 when I need to. Definitely is something wrong if he can only get this one up to 60mph.
I Am Guthixr FOR REAL! Man I love that they get exposure but now the fuckin tax is gonna go on em because they're "240 like" I just want one I can minitruck.
I really want to post a photo on here or a video response to show how my friends and i destroyed one last summer as an off road truck.. lol stock everything. Ran the piss out of the motor with no radiator for two hours? doing jump after jump.. they're so much fun and the KA is almost bullet proof.
I Am Guthixr I just bought a 96 with 107,124 miles on it for 1000$. Not trying to be a dick. Just saying they are still out there. It's an auto tho..:(
My friend Jackson and I were looking to get one of these a while ago and I ended up helping him buy one being sold by it's original owner that had 427,000 Miles! Granted it had it's engine rebuilt at around 250,000 miles but that's still crazy
I have a 95 hardbody 77589 original miles ...love this truck. Pull a 2500 lb trailer and a boat on a regular basis only thing makes that transmission overheat from time to time other than that no issues
Oh Lord there's so much incorrect information you both are spewing. Research a little before you make the video, or at least make it known at the intro that you don't have much knowledge.
I had a great time driving this D21!
Do any of you guys have one? Thanks for watching!

You got it backwards about the "truck motor" thing. The KA was in the 240 a year before it was in a hardbody.

I love my little D21! Bought it last year and still drive it every day. I was lucky enough to find a superbly clean example, a 97 single cab XE with 57k miles 5 speed with AC. And it is for sale for anyone interested ;)
Im interested is it still available?
Yea is this still for sale?
godamnit now these will go up in price now before i was able to make a prerunner
You finally just reliazed this it's been around for a long ass time a 240dx motor in a Nissan truck
nearly bought one of these a couple years back for a grand, but when I showed up to check it out, the entire interior had been stripped and what remained inside was a hackjob, rat's nest of wiring in the previous owner's attempt at tracing an electrical issue...needless to say i walked away from that one...
Glad to see the Hardbody getting some love on your channel. Keep up the good work, David!
Nissan Hardbody was bulletproof, 'cept for when they rust out.
The Ka24E is a great engine :) People whining about the low hp, but it's awesome, i drive the nissan terrano 2 (in europe it's the 2nd Generation of the d21) with right now 920.000+ km and it's my dayli (prove on my channel)
btw the engine came from the 240sx us version and the transmission from the 300zx only with the option to put it in 4x4
Lol were im from hardbodys and toyota hylux are the shit. Puts alot of the newer trucks to shame. Because how reliable they can be.
Amen brother.
I had a friend buy a new 1986 & 1/2 Nissan Hardbody truck and it turned out to be the best two wheel drive mini-truck I have ever seen.
hardbodys are virtually unkillable
theNobleTaco hardbodies are virtually unkillable, toyota trucks are actually unkillable
Dr. Snuggles yes, top gear proved it. 😂
I've been waiting for this forever! I bought one just over a year ago
This reminds me of a single cab ranger. I have an extended cab ranger with a small block and a race/drift everywhere. Small trucks are a lot more fun than big trucks in my opinion.
Thank you david im currently selling a d21 and this will help me with the sale 😂
I watched this when it came out and fell in love and now I have one, thanks for educating me
I have had many. 🤙
Dude that's like my fantasy fleet lol got a 93 D21 king cab 4x4 v6 5-speed
i have rear wheel drive and i go off roading all the time and i have the 4x4 too but honestly the rear wheel preforms just as well on the trail. the ultimate truck.
Damn you now price just tripled!
So can you but an sr20 in it ?
Dick Stroke yes you can! I'm thinking about putting one in my hardbody eventually
Dick Stroke I've seen an RB in one
Dick Stroke
me and my buddy went and got his second one drove 2.5 hours to get an black top sr and got back to his house and it took us about 8 hours to do it pretty much same approach to doing the sr swap into a s13
There's one for sale local to me with an rb20, pretty cheap too
You can. Not to hard to put it in. I had an SR20DET in my 92 D21. I wish I still had that truck, but some idiot t-boned it.
I've been looking into hardbodys and was hoping last night that you would review one haha
I'm pretty sure you can just turn down the torsion's like the older ones
James K yes you can
Yeah but it will handle like shit which is not a good thing if you want to race/drift.
this ^ is 100% true . i had to get fully adjustable upper control arms to fix the bumpsteer and terrible alignment on mine worth it to me but it cost 400$ for those which are made by beebani customs in the infamous nissan website to look them up
I dropped mine by adjusting the Torsion Bars and it handles better than it did before dropping it.
Greg Wavra I did it on my 74' 620 and also my 82' 720 both with 2''in blocks in rear and agree the handling was better
I had one on bags and it was the best little truck I had owned.. had a blast with it everytime I drove it.
love the video i own two datsun 720 one is 84 single cab 2wd the other is 86 king cab 4wd
I had a '91 Hardbody for over 20 years, put over 200,000 miles on it, towed a popup camper all over the western USA, and just beat on it. I finally wore it out. Probably the best truck I have ever owned.
COILOVER MINITRUCK REVIEW IS A MUST!!!!!!! AHHHHH DAAAAM!!!!!
I have a 95 pathfinder with the V6. Man! You wouldn't think it can drift but, it sure can and it's predictable too. Also has shocks and springs with plenty of after market suspension parts.
7:15 there is something wrong with your truck. I daily a 91 hardbody and 5th gear is not 4k rpm at 60 mph.
Stephen Browne Might be a late model thing, the gearing has me at about 3k at 60 in 5th. Sufficed to say the gas mileage is awful.
I'm around 2k (i think) at 60 in 5th. 97 model
5th 3k 75.. 60 is 2k. 95 ka xe ex cab
I have a 75 datsun and its only a speed but at 4 k im at 70
110 km k at 2800 93with 15s and 215, puts me about six percent over, so id imagine with the right wheels id be just under 3k
I now have the truck and its now 22 years old and all that its ever had replaced are thermostats a radiator and starter motor twice. never a single engine problem. at this point I would like to have the engine rebuilt because of its hard life but its still a runner and would run for a lot longer as is. its starting to burn a decent amount of oil and doesn't have the smoothest idle but its also not that bad. these are probably the best pickup trucks ever made
Slam that shit!!! lol I love minitrucks
240sxbro bag it
Ibuki well there goes the performance if you do that
Xx _Gaming_Alex_xX its a truck, its not really ment to go fast
I think he was more referring to performance regarding what it's designed to do. But minitrucks are dope!
Cheers 👍
Had one done up back in early 2000s high school still this truck
My 1994 F150 is a mustang in disguise with its 5.0L 302 and Flowmaster straight pipes.
Great little truck.
these are good platforms my buddy's got an rhd rb20 d21
My first new vehicle was a 95 king cab 4x2. I loved that truck. It never let me down
I can hear the crowd saying "LS SWAP IT!"
GOD HELP US ALL!
WankelGT no.
Lmao hahaha good one.👍
26dett the fuck out of it
i have a 97 hardbody. it is the best to drive, i love it. first vehicle i bought, and i plan on keeping it for life
Please stop using d21's for drifting.Getting harder to keep a clean one.
Thanks for saying this. Drift culture destroys everything they touch.
@@Salvisol but literally though
I fawkin hate those stripped interiors with drift parking brakes, sparco seats, the color purple and the stupid steering wheel, jesus christ just take care of the interior
When u hit 70mph on this truck you FEEL IT !!!
Helps keep u from speeding
My dad has the 4x4 and it rips we used to take it out and off-road allot also does donuts 😆 we don't now cause we broke the arms from all the bumps.
I had to do an oil change on my automotive instructor's d21 and it had a ka24e
If you want a drift platform don't even bother with anything 240sx related anymore people want too much for what they are, what people should really look for is a 350z if they wanna go Nissan
Love my D22, ka24de, 5spd, 4x4, best daily for Canada.
StrictlyE36 Oblivion smoke shop LLC also is it a king cab?
StrictlyE36 Oblivion smoke shop LLC 86 1/2
StrictlyE36 Oblivion smoke shop LLC
StrictlyE36 Oblivion smoke shop LLC we have the exact same truck lmao
My first truck I bought new was a 97 Nissan hardbody and it was a bad ass little truck and wish I still had it!! I took that thing every where and I took it off road a lot and never had a problem!
is a mazda b4000 a miata in disguise?
B2200 is
My grandfather is the first and only owner of this exact truck.
Bro that's just a disgrace... 🙄
everybody has a silverado on 35s
Look around you they're are hardbodies still cruising around all over the place, best made small truck ever
What size are those wheels
15s.
Man that thing is like my dream “beater” truck that I would take care of. I’m just in love with it!
nooooo, don't tell people this. This is MY plan to build a cheap drift truck!
I've got a '94 D21 dual cab, same engine (KA24E) and body styling. 400k on the original engine and its still going strong.
man i have a 1987 nissan 4x4 with the z24
boss Production HD I almost bought one of those yesterday but the seller sold it right as I left to get it.
Ibuki I hate when that happens
Me to
i also own one! A 1988
89 here :) 1JZ no shit
My phone buzzed and I got excited thinking it was a text. Then I saw it was another video from you and got even more excited! lol
My father passed the truck onto me and I can not wait to build my mini truck laying on frame with 20s!
the ka is awesome
My best friend had one of these in high school , It was lowered on wide tires . Looked pretty cool , and just to clear things up i haven't been in school since 1989 these were new then .
Notification squad?? 👏
My 90 model 2wd 4 Cylinder stock will do 85 on the interstate all day long, I must have a rare bread. Love it.
Wow
Got a 91 2wd base that just ticked over 130k org miles with 4 cylinder that's my daily driver and I can still get it up to 85 when I need to. Definitely is something wrong if he can only get this one up to 60mph.
@@joshuairwin137 nice
Now every fuck boy will want one.. THANKS! rip me finding a mint one without tax lmao
I Am Guthixr FOR REAL! Man I love that they get exposure but now the fuckin tax is gonna go on em because they're "240 like" I just want one I can minitruck.
I Am Guthixr yep. Let's just hope they don't ruin them 😞☹️
I really want to post a photo on here or a video response to show how my friends and i destroyed one last summer as an off road truck.. lol stock everything.
*"Should you just focus on the 240SX? No. Focus on a 300ZX instead, you'll thank yourself in the end.*
COMRADE DONALD TRUMP the Z31 is an absolute gem in my opinion.
you obviously have never worked on VG30DETT
Jimmy Jay real shit!😂😂😂
Jimmy Jay they are so fucking packed into the 300zx. That engine bay is a nightmare.
*Except for the fact that I owned a Z32 for five years, nice try though.*
owned a d21 4×4 for a while now. Best small truck to own hands down. Fucking love it
Review a Chevy s10
Tannerb or an 80s s15 lol they run forever, trust me I have one
GRM Joker in b4 someone mistakes the s15 you're talking about as a 240 instead of the gmc s10 lol
steinke24 lol yea. but good luck getting your hands on a gmc s15
Tannerb my grandad owns an s10
i own a 88 gmc s15 i love it
I have a 95 hardbody 77589 original miles ...love this truck.
Young and dumb thinking they know everything while not knowing shit
“I’m just a kid with a dream okay “ That was too funny 🤣. The struggle is real bro
No it's not
'97 was the last year of the Hardbody. Mine was a manual 4x4 Kingcab Long bed XE. I wish I still had it. It was awesome!
