My miniature schnauzer is called a mini, but he’s 20lbs and about 16 inches tall. He’s lovable and fun and energetic but not overly so. Walks and ball throwing is enough. He’s very loyal and sticks right near me. I’m a senior and would get another if he dies before I do!

As the owner of a wonderful beagle I got being very ill and not being able to be very active myself I can say that I am happy that I didn't listen to objections like that. Beagles are extremely loving and very smart and they learn very quickly what you need them to learn. Mine is 10 years old now and most of her life she's been a very well-behaved dog who made me very happy with her presence/

I would think that smaller breeds would be more suitable for older people.
