    The real reason for dolphin over DBX for the small ship explorers is DAT SUPERCRUISE TURN RATE (and scoop rate). Switching back to the DBX or a jumpa-conda is like dragging your space legs through molasses.

    Hey now...the iEagle ties for fastest ship in the game (post-engineering) AND still has maneuverability unmatched by the others that hold that title. It's costs more than the viper3 but the viper can't drift like the iEagle.

    • @tex8564
      @tex8564 5 лет назад +1

      From fighting different types of ships in my career i can say just about anything can out perform the IEagle, all that speed and maneuverability is useless when you get melted by anything that has more than one hard point compared to the regular Eagle it feels like the normal Eagle lasts longer against my Viper 3 than the IEagle, though thats a trait shared by most imperial ships, poor armor.
      Thats just my opinion

      @therealbahamut 5 лет назад +3

      @@tex8564 Yeah you're not wrong. While the Ieagle shares the top speed spot with the Viper and has more maneuverability, at that speed that's pretty much all it has. I think it's a smaller ship with a slimmer hitbox for what that's worth, making it hilariously good at slipping between bigger ships in the mailslot and darting in and out of landing zones. If you ever wanted to be THE fastest data runner in the galaxy, the engineered Ieagle is definitely a blast to fly.

      @@therealbahamut the one weird red and white looking one, the Mamba? I think it's called? I believes lore says it originated as a racer may try that, the IEagle doea have 1 good use in combat, pirating, if they don't comply you have decent weaponry against low level freighters and if they fight back you can outrun most freighters. I've heard of people engineering ships to go over 400 what ever the in-game speed unit is, personally regarding combat for small ships i think the Viper 3 is best, a good set of hard points and all round good fighter, a good use for Eagles may be capital ship defense for when Fleet carriers come into the game, small fast maneuverable ships can run rounds against single attackers, actually that may the best way to make Eagles/IEagles work, pack tactics

    The Dolphin jumps a little shorter than the DBX, but in exchange for that, you get a ship that's faster, more maneuverable, smaller for landing on rough terrain and Guardian sites, and has an extra 5-size optional internal slot that can fit a nice big fuel scoop that won't leave you pausing at stars like the DBX. And it runs so cool that I can jump from stars' coronas without it ever getting above 60% heat. In other words, a lovely civilized long-range exploration vessel.

  • @Deathborn2048
    @Deathborn2048 5 лет назад +25

    • @sephiridan5279
      @sephiridan5279 5 лет назад +6

      Yep, this. The maniacal laugh is entirely appropriate when considering the Dolphin's combat capabilities, but not enough space (internals) for exploration? Maybe if you compare it to some much more expensive medium and large sized ships, but it's basically "best-in-class" for a small exploration ship. (I'm expecting you'll say DBX is that, which has LESS internal space than the Dolphin, though higher jump range -- just saying.)

    So first of all VR in Elite is the best :P anyway, on the note of DB Scout … here's t he thing. There is a lineup of small ships that have the same hardpoints, namely 2x class 1 and 2x class 2. However; DB Scout has all of these clustered together on the sides of the cockpit. Slap gimbal weapons on it and combined with the speed and maneuverability you can butt fuck your targets all day long (until you run out of MC ammo that is). Out of all the small ships I like it the best for combat, even better than Viper mk. 3, because Viper, like the rest of them, has two of the hardpoints way back and on the belly. So you're much less effective in dealing damage. Plus, the DB Scout just owns Viper in jump range and fuel capacity.
    To sum it up. if you decide to go bounty hunting in a small ship, especially with a new commander, this is a really good choice. Unlike that dumpster fire called Viper Mk4. I tried. Don't ask … it was a phase.

    @TheYamiks Lol man, Your cynicism is showing! Some of these ships are actually good... in PVP.
    Viper4: upsized powerplant from Viper3 means that PA/rail builds are much easier to fit, allowing the Viper4 to be viable in PVP content versus player-engineered FLYING BRICKS with thousands of hitpoints worth of shields or armor. Viper3 has a much harder time fitting for speed and dps at the same time, so it struggles to kill anything bigger than it is in any time less than 30 minutes and a multitude of synthesis reloads.
    I.eagle: same deal from the eagle, and the 1 medium hardpoint means that fitting a PA is even possible.
    DBS: coldest running ship in the game, faster than the DBX - fully tanked, you have 2000 hull and a hard to hit stealth bomber. Also great for some of the new "content" VS installations and megaships.
    Challenger: Take Gunship. Drop Fighter-bay for Moar Speed. Loose 1 medium hardpoint, get one more small. Fit all Fixed Multicannons. Actually succeed in chasing down and murdering your targets. Why is the Challenger "bad"?

    Viper 4 = little more agility.
    Dolphin = little more jump range
    Dropship = more jump range as mentioned. Also why not give it fighter bay support?
    DB Scout = A little less hull mass, a little more shield and jump range OR bring down it's price so it's closer in cost to the Cobra 3
    Crusader = Revision entirely into an Alliance counterpart to the Federal Gunship. New unique model. Not a butchered Challenger. Or at the very least just fix the damn hardpoint doors.

      Challenger could REALLY, and I do mean REALLY use a class 7 reactor. Trying to feed so many hardpoints off the same reactor as BeefChief, doesn't really work out. ESPECIALLY when trying to mount Guardian weaponry for thargoid hunting, I'd prefer being able to go for an Armored power plant instead of Overcharged, for the better heat efficiency and improved integrity, since I'm going up against corrosive shit with weapons that generate a lot of heat.

    Since I found Dolphin's stupid class 5 luxury cabin could be replaced by a mighty class 5 guardian FSD booster, it becomes one of my favorite exploration ship. Even after some engineering work and module removing, the jump range is ~65ly at most, definitely not in the excellent tier (but quite good when actually using it), and an engineered Dolphin with a class 5 FSD booster is as expensive as a space vibrator made by gold (compared with DBX's similar performance build cost). It's tough enough to survive base defenses, has terrific hardpoints for a large beam and 4 medium dumbfire missile racks (which are spectacular AoE weapons against base defenses and skimmers... Just aim vaguely in their direction, no lock needed... and can work in a pinch against a ship in the restricted maneuvering of a dogfight over a planetary surface) and as a multi-role, you can cram the SRV and DSS in there easily. I get 55LY out of mine with an AFMU, repair limpets, shields AND a 4G SRV hangar. It’s easier to land than the Phantom, and handles great in supercruise. Funny thing I just found out about the Viper MK4 which makes it a monster is... its ramming capacity.
    With its additional Hull capacity (and/or shield) and increased weight, ramming into any small and even some medium shield is devastating. You can destroy most small ships' shield by just ramming into them and as Viper MK4 has the shield mass capacity of a medium ship, this leaves it with still an active shield after the impact.
    With its ramming capacity, the average survival time of the opponent in any small ship is about 30 secs if you know how to ram ships (which isn't a skill many practice).

    You use mediocre ships because of... personal challenge? Outside jokes i think it's nice to use something different even if inferior, most people use like the best 5 ships in the game to min-max but when you have all the money, ships and upgrades you need already you try to use something else for a change. I don't like visually the Dolphin, you do little with it min-max wise but it flies very smoothly and for collecting materials on planets it's nice. Sure with Type 6 you can do more but it's not as enjoyable when you dock manually ;)
    PS still i agree that they could tune, at least the newer ships they'll release, better for certain roles. I like the idea of variants of the same ships, like explorer/scout for the ASP, even if really not designed for what it could bring to the table gameplay wise with the current balance.

    A grade on everything in my viper MK4 is actually pretty good as a bounty hunting ship i think, i mean the rebuy cost is great and i usually dont have a problem out maneuvering other players unless they actually have their ship engineered or know how to fly way better than i can but i actually enjoy it and even though i have a anaconda and bigger ships idk might be just preference but i do enjoy to bring it out of storage every once and a while to blow up some scrubs

    Eh, to hell with rank grinding for ships, I’d rather rank-grind for permits, as that tends to happen faster (or at least you get the Sol permit fairly early on in the ranks. Dunno about the Achenar permit, though).

    I own a dolphin. I even bought Horizons to unlock it. Can confirm it is only good for passenger missions.... and even then, you'd be better off just getting a Type 7 and outfitting it with more cabins than your mother's cookie tins.
    Also the Dolphin sounds like two cats fucking in a wind storm. But after all that.....

    DBS is nice-handling with better hardpoint placement and jumprange than Viper. Dolphin might has most capacity for a small-landing pad other than Cobra MkIV, is a bit faster than T6 and has better shields than T6. I think it’s a pretty good smuggler, especially with illegal passengers.

  • @Shnyrik11
    @Shnyrik11 5 лет назад

    Well, I might argue with one thing: with passenger cabin slot unrestricted and two small slots added Dolphin now has as much slots as Phantom and even more than DBX or Asp have, so it's difficult to say that it has too little slots for exploration. I mean, who has enough? Well, actually, Anaconda does, but we just can't compare every explorer with Anaconda, right? I mean, can we? %)

    This may have been changed since I played more often, but doesn't the Diamondback Scout have the coldest-running systems of all the ships? If that's the case, that means it's a prime choice for silent running combat. Too bad that type of combat got nerfed so hard

  • @rpengler1
    @rpengler1 3 года назад

    I am going to argue for the dolphin actually. Aside from the Cobra 4, which only a few can get, the dolphin is capable of hauling 72T of cargo with a reasonable 22ly jump range, before engineering. This is all on a small ship capable of docking on outposts easily. The T6 in comparison can haul 96T of cargo, but requires a medium pad and only has a 19ly jump range. True, the T6 will cost you 2.1 million less than the dolphin.
    For me, this is enough to put the dolphin in the 1 use category. Can't really consider it good, but in this specific capacity, no other ship is better for the job.

    DBS is my latest ship. I use it for hacking megaships. I like its hardpoints better than the DBX too. Also have Dolphin. Very nice for taking rich idiots on tours. Dropship I have briefly owned in my own Fed rank grind. I think it would be good if it was made to be more the hulltanky competitor for Python. Unspecialize at least one of the military compartments and have more range. That'd be a start, at least.
    Of the rest I have no personal experience. I love the Chieftain, but those variants are just bizarre. Why Lakon, whyyyy?

  • @Belgastos
    @Belgastos 5 лет назад

    I would agree and disagree with opinion of FDropship. A lot of people said that it's good for mining - it is, but if exclude surviveability ASP Explorer have about the same internals. I personally use Dropship because i just dislike ASP Explorer looks, but it still have a lot of negatives - crazy drift (it makes me want to put A-rated thrusters because of this, on a mining ship), bad shields (normally i wouldn't complain but with drift on this beast i often smash the rocks or mailslot), jump range is shit (i always bring type-6 for transporting mined stuff). But, to be honest, it's main purpose is combat and it's somewhat viable ship for combat. Not a PvE(depends of style), but PvP, where maneurability isn't much of thought and boost is important. Yes, not the fastest boost speed but it can boost about indefinately, and while boosting it also gives that sweet sweet maneurability. In FAon it is really not the best ship, but FAoff and frontal attacks - good. Again, in PvE hull tanking is less effective than in PvP, and there is a lot of hull. Biggest downside for me on this ship is it's bad heat resistance - it overheats while scooping star after about 12 seconds, so lasers isn't really an option. Only third rank requred - it's really easy to obtain, and you start(atleast was) in feds space so missions usually would be taken from feds(that's how i reached third rank without notice when was making money doing trading missions on type-6), and in my opinion it's a better unlock than Imp. Courier (Courier is a good ship, sure, but i prefer more specialized ships to multiroles(personally have only one multirole ship - Adder, which i use for light PvE/planetary missions/Search&Resque from thargoids mostly because i don't like to have bounties on my DBX and it's cheaper to rebuy)). But it's mostly outplayed by it's elder brothers, so it's far from the best.
    Another role it's good at and a few people consider it - cheap AX ship, and by cheap i mean even without engineering and unlocking guardians. 2.4k hull without engineering and 3k with a little of it(lvl 2 on hull reinforcements and mil grade composite), low shields is perfect for thargoid combat, and most important 1L 4M weapon slots. As we know all experimental AX (not unlockables) is M sized as minimum, so it gives us maximum firepower. Fit it up with all multicannons if you just want to kill scouts. Or, another bonus of it - because it's 5 slots it makes perfect setup for AX 2 MC, 2MissileL and one flak. With enough skill you can solo cyclops, and that is without any engineering or unlocks. It's not the best, but it's really good and it's cheapest ship for AX duties.

    I get to be 'that guy' for a moment:
    The Dolphin is the king of small landing pad trade vessels. I know that's a misnomer to people used to trading enough Narcotics or Onionhead in a single transaction to become the space-faring version of Pablo Escobar, BUT... hear me out.
    For rare goods trading, it has 88 tons of potential max cargo space, it still fits on a small landing pad so getting 'locked' from an Outpost by an AFK player or especially dopey AI on the medium landing pad is never a concern, the jump range and fuel-scooping possibilities mean it'll go anywhere within the bubble with pretty much no effort, and while a Type-6 *IS* cheaper to outfit (hell, so is a Keelback), the Dolphin flies better than both of them and the T6 is only marginally faster in a straight line.

    Why you can't compare the Viper IV to the Viper III:
    Viper III = super low budget Fer-de-Lance = combat ship
    Viper IV = super low budget Python = multipurpose ship
    Also, the Dolphin is very good as a cute little space taxi, and its flat underside makes it easy to land on planets, plus it outjumps the Hauler by at least 11 Ly.

      Not for combat. Poor shields and effectively the small hardpoints are a washout for combat. Too far back and hidden in a turning fight for almost every combat pilot who will tend to have the enemy go over the canopy rather than under the nose and out of sight. If missiles were a better choice, they'd be a decent idea for the small hardpoints and this may have been what they were supposed to ape from the OG elite. Medium multicanon with thermal and small missile rack with increased mag capacity.
