Yeah if you tune down it allows you to use thicker strings if you want, perhaps going for the full Stevie Ray Vaughan gauge 12s or whatever. Get a nice metallic thunk in there. Not sure whether I'd take that gauge on lead, but the rhythm player could do it, sound like a fucking steamroller.

Yeah like I've replied to a post above, the tuning down allows all these bands if they want to increase the string gauge, allowing them to really spank the rhythm stuff and also give a lovely metallic sustained tone. Well actually, I don't know whether that's what they actually do, but it's what I'd do. If I remember right. Haven't played guitar in this style myself for about 100 years. But tuning down and a nice set of 11's would be my idea if I was doing some major crunch stuff. I mean you don't want your bottom e string lapping about like a whore's G string (see what I did there?) but take it as far as it'll go. Nice hint of flange and chorus and you now have a lovely tone to be proud of. The guitarist of Killing Joke I always feel is a good place to start if you want to go old school, and you can see the way he does it, all over the fucking place with a hollow body and all kinds of weird stuff. Those are my random guitar musings for today. You may or may not agree.
