My Taycan weights 2300 kg but it feels like a 1.8 to 1.9 ton car. If M has done the same as Porsche, there is no trouble regarding weight. Good on BMW to get Mr BMW himself to showcase this car and do its launch. Especially for the uk car guys and bimmer fans. Welldone Joe. Before watching i thought its weight would let it down but no. Bmw has worked its magic to still make it drive well and fast too.
Well it's certainly no looker. Bulky and artless. Typical 2024 BMW in fact. Weighing about the same as a Range Rover Sport, it's going to need every one of those horses.

As an avid BMW collector with a few M cars on hand, this I have to say looks alot like a bloody Toyota Camry from the rear. Front looks aggressive, but you can see their doing what Audi have done for years, and by that I mean kenetic design elements, from the new 1 series to Thai the fronts look similar.
@@flo3588 you can check global opinions/reviews etc worldwide and you will see. Previous generation has way better reviews from start to an end then this generation
Same feeling here. I was very impressed by the handling as well as the fuel economy going normal speeds on the autobahn. Even though it handles quite good, the stability at higher speeds is superb. In sport it feels like a bigger M2, in comfort it’s like a 540d. Disclaimer: I have never driven the car, just trolling around
I am not opposed to plug in, or EV, or alt fuel, or completely ICE. All flavors have their place. And I appreciate their unique flavor as an automotive. But I do wish this trend of ever heavier cars stops, no matter which type of motor or fuel type is powering it. Besides light weight, I want them to engineer back the steering feel/feedback that they engineered out,all in name of improved tech. Today’s cars are far more numb and void of man to machine interactive connection. I will hold my verdict on this car till I drive it. But for me the weight gain is a huge negative.
You did a great job with the review, despite the tricky condition! I just watched the Top gear video on the new M5 and yours is definitely way better. And judging by your review BMW did a better job with the M5 compared to the lackluster XM.
So no competition version being made according to bmw in other videos. Also how does 197hp from the electric plus the 585hp from the de-tuned V8 come to 727hp? Is that 55ho lose Dow to how the system works? Tuners (if it can be cracked) will have fun, instant 160+ hp gain from the V8 on stage 1. Then it’s 860+ then it starts to make since as a speed machine because power weight is then much better
You can always tell by Joe’s maniacal laugh that he’s enjoying himself, and something is performing at or above expectations. Sounds pretty good from the video. And it’s still a v8, which is great to see. 700+hp is mental. Will go looking for a depreciated touring version in 5 years or so 😂
He won't, he's to much of a bmw fanboy He really needs to call a spade a spade if he's to be taken seriously as a top car journo. I.e don't be scared to upset bmw once in a while
Thanks for the effort to get this review out to us Joe. The sensible and reasonable folk amongst us understand that you only had limited opportunity to drive the car and within BMW's contractual boundaries. We also recognise that driving the nearly-finished car on track and driving the production one on the road will be completely different. I'd be keen to hear your views, if you're allowed to say, on how it performs compared with the F90, the F90 CS and G80 CS.
Great overview thanks. I am attracted to this I have to admit. I like the fact that it's hybrid. I mean I could do all my daily in-city driving just on electric power. That is kind of priceless. It is one reason why I was eyeing the new Mercedes E class hybrids but didn't ultimately go in that direction because, well I'm not an octogenarian. The M5 on the other hand seems pretty much drawback free. You get supercar performance more or less and you get that in a car you can drive every day. The weight is a non issue on the road. On a track maybe I don't know. But this is a road car. Would make for an amazing road tripper here in the US.
That's because the M5 is certainly nicer than the regular 5. But regular 5 series has yet to grow on me, neither did the nose of the 2020 3/4 series (and it's been 4.5 years)...
@restartc7632 they don't have to stick to the old ones you simple minded goof they just have to make the car more beautiful and I mean undeniably where there is no argument the majority thinks it's beautiful that is not the case no matter how much the "shock factor" effects you. Let me guess "it grew so much on me"
When are manufactures going to move away from "gloss black" plastic trims? It is not a quality finish, it does not give the impression of a premium vehicle as it is found on the cheapest of vehicles these days. Oh and if you even look in its direction it scratches! its extremely impractical for both the interior and exterior of any vehicle.
I really really wanted to love the new M5….but I think it’s disappointing. I’m sure it’s a great everyday proposition with the hybrid power train and general stuff a 5 series is always good at. But thank performance is I think a bit underwhelming compared to the car it’s replacing and I just can’t get on with the looks. It’s just so bland and awkward looking, especially the rear. I totally get why lots of people don’t like the M4 styling, but at least it’s got some personality!
I would love if they offered a non hybrid version, and kept the same horsepower from the 4.4L V8, but we would benefit from the new chassis, design, and technology!
Plug in hybrids are so stupid. So your going to go to a petrol station to fill up and then to a charge station aswell to charge up? Who the fuck cba doing that. 90% of the time you will be using petrol engine only and electric motor will be dead
I have an X3 PHEV and it's amazing. More like you charge every night at home and enjoy free quiet drives when you want. For longer trips you don't worry about charging cuz you just go fill up.
If memory serves me right I think Joe might have been one of the earlier ones to test the pre-prod G87 M2 also. Great to see this channel getting the exclusives over CarWow
honestly, it can be the most comfortable, amazingly fast and other similar bla-bla...; I think that if you're not a teenager, these things mean very little; even if I would beat verstappen on sundays in one, I still wouldn't be interested; touch, feel, supplesness, engagement, interaction and connection with the road in front of me; 100-110 mph is really enough on a back road, you don't need 200.., no one needs actually. This is excessive and made me realise the last true m5 was the e39 one. Cheers!
Congrats for channel progression Joe and i am sorry for this M5 being so bad, heavy, ugly and screwed up with plug in scam system. Just not sure if you are able to say the hard truth but we all know how you feel about this 2.5 tones “sport” “eco friendly” car. @@pevvex4452 I had my first car in 1977 (Beetle model 1971) and still 5 years ago I thought I would never have an EV. Have had 4 M-cars. Now I have had a Porsche Taycan since May 2021 and it's the best car I ever had, maybe par with the E92 M3 I had for 5 years. It's heavy yes, but feels way lighter (feels like 1800-1900 kg) when driving it. It's fantastic on curvy roads, especially in the Alps. My wife's car is a X1 e25 and it's the most solid car she has ever owned. Both our cars have around 75 000 km on the tacho. Yes the Taycan has some software tweaks but otherwise nothing. I would still wait to give judgment. Joe Achilles thought the G90 drives fantastically.
The car looks impressive, and I can definitely see its potential on the visualization aspect of the vehicle. However, I'm eager for what to come and see how tunable the engine will be and how far it can be pushed.
No one buying an M5 gives a damn about driving in electric only, I'll bet none of the customers even want a heavy hybrid. I used to love the m5, i even had the CS version. Sad time for cars in general
My first ever job was in a BMW dealer in 1995. I worked in the dealer network for about 12 years and got to use some of their most iconic cars. I owned a 2006 M3 CS in Interlagos Blue in 2009 which was close to the pinnacle of M cars. A screaming straight 6 with over 100BHP per CC. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. 2.5 tonnes! BMW have thrown all their true performance values out of the window. I'd buy a second hand Porsche Taycan Turbo S which is faster and prettier than that because they're mega cheap used, then find a beautiful V8 E90 M3 from 2010, have it fully serviced as a weekend warrior. Or maybe find a mint low mileage E46 M3, or maybe an E39 manual M5. And I think i'd still have £10k change after you spec that hideous thing up. Oh dear. Great exclusive Joe, and a great video as usual, we just don't agree on the car i'm afraid.
This car will grow on most people just like the lastest M3/M4 has. The M engineers know what they are doing. Give the M5 a chance. The review will be better than what people expect. M5 Engineers have had years of experience and development so will make sure it’s not a disaster
The latest M3/M4 hasn’t grown on a lot of people though outside of RUclipsrs and is considered to have a horrendous front end still by most, to this day. Come to think of it, I don’t see many of them on the road either.
Good design shouldn’t have to grow on you, it’s more the BMW fanboys accept it rather than it actually being good looking. Plus it’s slower to 60 than the outgoing one, and it’s 600kg heavier for what only 100hp extra? Think this may be a miss for M
It is slower 0-60 than the old M5. That is unacceptable. If it was hybrid and weighed 4 tons but was quicker and somehow magically handled well IMO that would be fine. But that isn't the case. its a DOWNGRADE from the old one. Looks are an opinion, numbers aren't.
From what I've read and from my understanding of what makes a car handle good, the extra weight being the batteries under the floor actually helps with the way it drives. The batteries significantly lower the center of gravity making the car feel more planted and more confidence inspiring to the driver. Now if they could figure out how to get the weight back down while keeping the batteries and the center of gravity low, it be a millions times better of a car. It's still a boat after all.

My Taycan weights 2300 kg but it feels like a 1.8 to 1.9 ton car. If M has done the same as Porsche, there is no trouble regarding weight. I have had 24 cars since 1977 and only the M3 E92 was as fun to drive in the mountains as my Taycan 4S.
Also I am still on my original both summer and winter tyres since May 2021.
Same weight as a G-Wagon ☠☠☠

Good on BMW to get Mr BMW himself to showcase this car and do its launch. Especially for the uk car guys and bimmer fans. Welldone Joe. Before watching i thought its weight would let it down but no. Bmw has worked its magic to still make it drive well and fast too.
Bring on the touring!
Well it's certainly no looker. Bulky and artless. Typical 2024 BMW in fact. Weighing about the same as a Range Rover Sport, it's going to need every one of those horses.
So are the new Mercedes AMG hybrids
Joe on new levels with the exclusive content. Quality video.
Well my F90 M5 Comp LCI is looking better than ever! Zero want on this one.
It'll be interesting to see which direction Alpina takes with this generation of 5 series. Will they avoid using a hybrid system?
We’ll done Joe, been following you from the start and now your the first to review such an iconic car! Hardwork pays off 👏
having owned an M car in the past, I miss the road feel of the steering that you'd find in the older hydraulic cars. I'd like to know, how this one compares for road feel to those cars. Cheers
Great video mate - that looks unbelievable for 2.5 tonnes! Well done on the exclusive too
Joe, been subbed for about 7-8 years. Absolutely can't believe how far your channel has come, it's incredible. Love the content. I moved to Sydney from UK recently, and every time I'm in Manly you pop into my head, as sure you mentioned you lived there or worked there..

Hang on a minute, its an M5 but to release its full potential you have to buy the M sport driving pack? I thought by buying the M5 i was buying the M sport driving pack?
Surprised at how positive this review was. Maybe when the initial excitement of driving the new m5 dies down Joe will come to his senses.
Joe and bmwblog don’t count as reviews, lol. It can be considered official BMW Ad at this point
Another amazing episode. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks for sharing Joe
Looking good, Joe! Thanks for the share.
I was toying with which you tuber to watch first for this M5 review. So glad I chose yours Joe! I've never wanted an M5 but after that review I'm ordering a touring in frozen dark grey when my numbers come in! Well done Joe and well done BMW!
Please TELL me how a 4.4 V8 can make no noise at all from the outside ??? That is a crime . Yes glad we still have a v8 but it’s got so many filters it’s as quiet as ev 😢
People hate on every new BMW, but buy them more than the others.
Cheaper than their counterparts.
GM was the best-selling brand in the 1970s, must mean it was better than any other car back then.
😂
The sour grapes that criticize the most anyway...
Twat, M5s depreciation is horrid so only a few buy this model, so NO, nobody really buys this new until they are a few years old.
I like it alot . Probably never have one but its super slick
Looks awesome
But hybrid is crap

Same feeling here. I was very impressed by the handling as well as the fuel economy going normal speeds on the autobahn. Even though it handles quite good, the stability at higher speeds is superb. In sport it feels like a bigger M2, in comfort it’s like a 540d.

It’s the best looking since the e39.
Joe launching M Cars now. Great stuff
he was at the m3 launch nothing new
You did a great job with the review, despite the tricky condition! I just watched the Top gear video on the new M5 and yours is definitely way better. And judging by your review BMW did a better job with the M5 compared to the lackluster XM.
It’s gonna grow on everybody
Dp and tune rear seat delete for weight savings and this thing is launching like a beast
Excellent video Joe!❤
You can always tell by Joe’s maniacal laugh that he’s enjoying himself, and something is performing at or above expectations. Sounds pretty good from the video. And it’s still a v8, which is great to see. 700+hp is mental. Will go looking for a depreciated touring version in 5 years or so 😂
No way I would take this car without factory warranty. Just too complicated for future maintenance.
30% heavier and 16% more hp than previous M5
Can't wait for the H90 M5. Hopefully it looks and sounds better.
Just go for the F90. It's perfect
This car will sound great in the US. I feel bad for Europe

As old top gear said, theres never been a bad M5. Business as usual I'd say.
what happens once the battery runs out. you are left with a 2.5 tons vehicle, that will perform way worse than the current m5.
M5 ❤
It has grown on me a lot already tbh, which I anticipated would happen but not this soon. BMW are simply world world class.
side/rear/interior yes , but the front is just hideous.
the car is awesome. Love that they try out new designs every time and don‘t just stick to the old ones
That's because the M5 is certainly nicer than the regular 5.
But regular 5 series has yet to grow on me, neither did the nose of the 2020 3/4 series (and it's been 4.5 years)...
You've a bit of shit on your lip there ffs. It's junk
@restartc7632 they don't have to stick to the old ones you simple minded goof they just have to make the car more beautiful and I mean undeniably where there is no argument the majority thinks it's beautiful that is not the case no matter how much the "shock factor" effects you. Let me guess "it grew so much on me"
It's so good to have you back Joe, I hope you are better.
This thing is going to go through brake pads and tires like crazy. A performance sedan that weighs as much as an SUV is nuts

You must be kidding Joe. Far too heavy and too big. Very disappointing. If I had the previous M5 Comp I’d be hanging onto it.
If money wasn't an issue, I'd be hunting for the M5 CS!
I would love if they offered a non hybrid version, and kept the same horsepower from the 4.4L V8, but we would benefit from the new chassis, design, and technology!
Nice video Joe well done again !!! thanks
The engine and its sound are the best thing about this car, bar none. The S68 sounds like their old naturally aspirated V8s. It sounds like the S62.🥰

Don't you ever wonder why that happens?
@@martynrollinson wonder why Joe reviewed this before CarWow? Cant say I do
Carwow sucks.
honestly, it can be the most comfortable, amazingly fast and other similar bla-bla...; I think that if you're not a teenager, these things mean very little; even if I would beat verstappen on sundays in one, I still wouldn't be interested;
touch, feel, supplesness, engagement, interaction and connection with the road in front of me; 100-110 mph is really enough on a back road, you don't need 200.., no one needs actually. This is excessive and made me realise the last true m5 was the e39 one.
Cheers!
E60 is just as amazing
You can summarise it like this: cars used to have vibe, this doesn't
Can you confirm what you said about the EV only range of 42 miles? Or did you mean to say 42 kilometers?
Congrats for channel progression Joe and i am sorry for this M5 being so bad, heavy, ugly and screwed up with plug in scam system. @@peterhammer6915 i don’t have to wait for anything. I had every M5 since E60 and i had few cars with @#€& plug in systems lately. I simply never going to buy anything with plug in crap systems. Why would anyone anyway unless it’s collectible Ferrari or something like this.
I like the car but I just don't understand why the radar has to be between the grills!?
2.4t😳
Ok it's heavy and hybrid, but man it looks mean! i love the looks
Looks faster and more nimble than everyone thought it would be.
M5 Engineers have had years of experience and development so will make sure it’s not a disaster
why would anyone give a chance to a 2.4 tons vehicle?
The latest M3/M4 hasn’t grown on a lot of people though outside of RUclipsrs and is considered to have a horrendous front end still by most, to this day. Come to think of it, I don’t see many of them on the road either.
@@renas5371Compared to Audi rs4 and Merc c63 you see a lot more BMW m3 and m4 about
Good design shouldn’t have to grow on you, it’s more the BMW fanboys accept it rather than it actually being good looking.
