110 for a bone stock M5 seems like daylight robbery to me. For that money I'd want minimum a 7 series. What on earth, at this point it better had be the weight.
I kind of disagree with this statement. I think it's the best looking current M car (though that's not a high bar...). It's the only one that I don't find outright ugly.
It's not an M5, it's a giant Lego brick on wheels. BMW have completely missed the point with this car and as did Mercedes with their offering. More isn't always better.
I've not driven many modern cars but I just can't imagine picking this one with that budget. So complicated and unnatural. How much of that sound is speakers? So much hybrid but it doesn't make it spectacular off the line like an electric car, still does that like a fat sports saloon. If I park outside, I might just get a Lucid Air in stead. If I park inside...I guess I'd take the Jaguar XF Sportbrake (only used now I think) and spend a seeming unreasonable amount on making it better where possible. The engine less boring, the chassis more amazing.
Every time I see a human near that thing I worry the required escape velocity for said human will not be reached and eventually the M5 will consume all matter becoming a singularity and threatening our existence. Thankfully you made it home.
The weight isn't even it. They're exposing themselves for delivering a lame and badly tuned hybrid system. If that hybrid were potent and well setup, there is no reason that this car accelerates much slower than a high power electric sedan (low 2 seconds is the norm in this price range). It's a half arsed effort. Something we see also in German full EVs, they're barely trying. Porsche is the least bad, and we know even they are pulling their punches with Taycan and Macan.
Just to let you guys know, the new m5 weighs more than • A 2023 Ford F-150 (4,600-5,200 lbs depending on the model) • A Chevrolet Suburban (around 5,200 lbs) • A Toyota Land Cruiser (5,200 lbs) • cirrus visionjet (3,000lbs) • The Hubble Space Telescope (4,800 lbs) • A great white shark (4,200 lbs) • A Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton (up to 5,000 lbs) • A fully grown giraffe (2,500-3,000 lbs)
Push throttle, speed goes up, fun achieved, yay! Alternatively, I'll take something half the weight, with half the power. I'm sure they've done very clever things with the dynamics, but no "sporty" car should be heavier than a Giulia QV towing a Cessna...yes really.
I've never been more disappointed with a new car. They took one of the most perfect looking saloon cars and turned it into a heavy Kia for absolutely no reason
I'm guessing this m5 was developed during the electrification period just like the c63. It was a weird moment for automaker But now that they see there's a push back, the next gen M cars will be the one to look for as it'll be "purer" and more ///M ethos focused
What BMW needs to do with every single M car is provide a “pure” option. No battery assist. No auto. A TCS on or off button. Analog gauges. RWD. Doesn’t even need to make 700~ HP. Charge less, sell more. Winner.
I drove my mom’s new 2024 Z4 like a madman last night and definitely feared wrapping it around a tree. First roadster I’ve ever driven and I see why they’re so fun. I’m more of a 7er type of guy but.. for 1K a month lease.. Z4 not a bad fun car.
I'm still left scratching my head wondering who greenlighted this 5 series design. Or didn't BMW do a design study with previous gen customers? And settings, settings, and more settings....why?
While the CGI interface offers a range of impressive options, the reality is that most of the hundreds of businessmen who buy it will probably set it to four-wheel-drive comfort mode and leave it there forever.
Why is there no objective journalism anymore? Who cares if BMW doesn’t give you a car anymore. If everyone was honest, BMW wouldn’t be able to give anyone a car to review. Which, wow! Then they have to come out with a compelling product. We could be so much further along in society if people didn’t hate the truth. This current M5 is ugly, heavy, and not worth it in anyway.
It’s great. It’s for a specific market. People who like full sized vehicles with power. Yeah the little brothers are more peppy and smaller, but this car perfect for people who need space, speed and luxury
The problem is that these cars are now “all things to all people”. It needs to be sporty but comfy. It needs to be a tech fest for your passengers. It needs to impress them EU emissions people. What you get in the end is this. In a decade (F10 to G90), an M5 has increased its mass by about 50%.
Similar money gets you a Lucid Air with 1100 hp and 500 miles of range, and it's lighter and more spacious, like a Tardis of the same outside dimensions.

Sounds like it's a great daily driver and when you own the car u can easily figure out the "rebellious" settings and program them to the m1 and m2 button. Don't see how that's a bad thing. I'd like to see a track time though to see if it's faster or not.
The first thing you do in that scenario? You select Sport+ M mode and absolutely ring it's neck and have some fun in your new toy (is my honest answer to the question at the start of the video!)

They had to resurface the road after this test. You know those twin grooves slowly edged into the highway that you often see in the truck lane? Yes.. that...
I think it's too big and heavy, but the last couple of M5s have been for focused on big power and acceleration -- following the shift in the 5-series character from bigger 3-series to slightly smaller 7-series. I guess this is that idea taken to its furthest conclusion! I wonder, though, how much of this car is a result of two factors. First: restriction on big cities like London that make some kind of EV-only range desirable. And, second, a desire for a supplier-developed solution that didn't require a lot of new engineering. This kind of ZF-source approach is additive but really doesn't maximize the potential of a performance hybrid. I would have loved for the M5 to have ditched the EV-only range, developed a high revving N/A straight six in the spirit of the original M5 then added a performance oriented hybrid set up to enable such a set up to meet modern economy, emissions and drivability expectations. An 8500 rpm, 400 HP straight six with an additional 200 electric HP (and bottom end torque) in a low 4000 sedan would have been a really interesting car. But, I get it -- that's not really where the M5 plays now. Maybe the next gen M3?
To all motoring journalist out there: The best secrets are the ones that no one shares. Thanks for mentioning the E39 M5. Now their values will sky rocket way beyond what they are actually worth and will become a millionaires toy. I actually blame Magnus Walker for spilling the beans.
I don’t care that it doesn’t look as good as the old one, I don’t care that there are too many modes and settings, and I don’t care that it's a hybrid. I care that it's seemingly too heavy and numb to be fun. I don’t expect an M5 to be light, but 2400+ kilograms is absurd.
