- In today's videos, I want to showcase a very talented mapper's work. Fishke has made fantastic RP maps for Garry's Mod and I think they are worth covering in a video.

Being RP maps, I remember these maps not having any AI nodes, so I spent hours manually placing them all over the 3 maps.
It was tedious sure, but I had fun exploring as I placed these nodes.
No wonder NPCs would stop following me if I got too far
Do you still have the file with the nodes? If so, please upload them as an addon, I would love to have them as well!

@@nixel1324 there are multiple addons for NPC nodes for these maps on the workshop.
I’d recommend a couple of films that have these dark, dreamlike cities set in an unobtainable alternative America. ‘The Crow’, ‘Flatliners’, ‘Seven’ and even ‘Spawn’ has it’s moments. They’re not really America in the pre-smartphone era although that’s when the films were made. More like strange dark and almost forest like cities.
Still yet to see The Crow and Spawn, but the other two are fantastic. Seven's overall atmosphere is * chef's kiss *

Fun fact, Rp_UnionCity was my first gmod map I ever played ! It was running at 10 FPS but I appreciate the small details and the nice visuals very much.

me and my friends commonly play on the rp maps by fishke, one of us found that some of the tunnels that are meant to go to other maps dont align with eachother, i found that the LOD models are stored in the skybox which looks like a mini version of the map they also have some interiors.
These maps are wonderful. Fishke did an amazing detailed job on these.
You can wander around for an hour and just enjoy it. As a matter of fact I think I have.
It must have been a lot of work. But they're appreciated. It really captures the classic atmosphere.
And Union City always reminds me of the great Blondie song "Union City Blue''.
These maps give me heavy GTA IV vibes, something about the dark, gritty look of the city mixed with many areas that look pretty similar to those found in Liberty City. Definitely has something to do with the fact that both maps are heavily inspired by NYS. Love the look and feel of this map.
You can tell he's been inspired by GTA 3 to 5 by many of the details, which certainly isn't a bad thing

The reason that rp ny city has the "rich vs poor" vibe is because one side is Brooklyn, and the other is Manhattan. They're both parts of New York, in case you didn't notice that that's what the maps are based on.

Trust me as someone who also wanted to visit those cities (and did so) and romanticize them so much thanks to media like games and movies, reality is those cities are super overrated specially in 2024, and I can honestly say that the vibe those cities had faded away after the early 2000s, especially NYC and California. Exploring them through games is way better lol. I actually explored these maps in VR last year and was blown away by their details and quality, and they had that vibe that you would get in the 90s and early 2000s in those cities that games like GTA3 etc captured so well. So yeah you're not missing out on anything by not visiting them today imo lmao.
Yeah I had understood their current states in recent years. In my IT jobs, I worked remotely along people from all of these cities and States and a majority of them were extremely unhappy with their home city. Especially the New Yorkers.

I just love these videos that just look around different maps
Southside is absolutely my favorite GMOD map, I used to play on this cityRP server that was on southside night and there was a guy that was set up in the diner that i would always goto and RP eating food for shits and giggles, and when I visited the diner there was 2 dudes messing with the owner, so I had a "main character" moment where I told them to leave because they were being unsavory, push came to shove and i ended up shooting them both, paying for my food right before the owner said "you should get out of here, i called the cops" made my getaway and noticed there was a sewer entrance just outside of the diner, so I dipped into the sewer right as I heard sirens getting closer.
TL;DR Absolutely the greatest RP moment I've ever had in any videogame and it wouldn't have been possible without such a beautiful and thoroughly thought out map design.
I did not expect to hear the GTA 5 pause menu music, and for it to go as hard as it did in this video.
Makes me want to reinstall the game and play it again.

Radhaz is absolutely right. You can keep succeeding Source with new technology, but lots of passionate creators like to stick with what they know and every year, create something in this ancient engine that still surpasses everyone's expectations. Source really is immortal.
This is absolutly amazing. So much details and is a full perfect immersion to a real world. This is the kinda maps I like. Congrats to that guy mapper who did this. I'm stunned.

just yesterday i was playing on nycity and southside and forgot how many interiors there are in the maps . i remember a year ago i was messing around in southside and putting a lot of pokemon and other ragdolls just hanging out . i might go back and see where i put them and maybe even add More of those

That…feels like Chicago. While watching your video it felt so familiar. Now playing GM_UnionCity and, going through is really weird, these feel and look like real places even the subway platform reminds me of the Blue Line. It all just feels so real, absolutely adore it.
The "Morley" cigarettes ad shows that Fishke is probably a film/TV nerd. Morley cigarettes are most famously used in the X-Files, but it's a leftover from an old Hollywood prop company. They appeared in movies for decades.
Literally a great maps to do a rp life + sopranos setting or a late 90s to early 2000s story rp with friends

Mod suggestion: The Thing Remaster is a remake of The Thing mod for the HL2 Beta, i played it and it was great, you should check it out.

I know, bold but Can you make a video about good Eastern-European city maps as well? I'm a bit bored of the HL2 city 17 layout and I don't have much experience with RP Gmod maps, cause I don' have such big free space to even download the content, you know.

Honorable mention to Hometown1999, so many years have passed and it's still my go to.
RP_NYCity feels very Max Payne like (well obviously). Funny how both the game and the map are made by Finns. I like dark cities too, I literally tried to make a HL2 beta mod once called "Dark City". I guess we Finns really like dark cities.

Great inspiration for my own city environment I want to map out for a game, though the prospect of it taking years to make is uh... not good.
When I first saw his maps on the workshop I thought those were real photos.

Rad as a true blooded American i can say that I have visited every city in America and it is cool to visit a city and i have also been shot 15 times
I played this map (NYCity) with Max Payne NPCs and some scenic etc I had fun ! I am still nostalgic about the time I played with my friends with hamachi on GMod, we could have much fun there !

40 years of reviewing Garry's Mod maps? That's insane. I can't imagine reviewing these maps since 1984. Crazy to think the Source Engine came out that long ago.

Funny you use GTA V pause music, as these maps do use a lot of GTA 4/5 assets.
Other games in the series too, it basically copies from GTA3 to 5
These maps seem to be made with a photographers eye
IMO the union city night maps feel kinda spooky but also kinda beautiful (one could even say creepy and comfy)

Man, this makes me wanna boot up Gmod again. Exploring these maps with the NPC Invasion addon would feel so incredible, I might just install the game again.

I used to make tiny animations with Gmod and planned to upload them on my Channel but I had a problem to find perfect City Maps. These Maps are the Key that missed but now I got Work and Im not sure if I want to keep up with the Hobby of Animation. Voice Actors have also been fitted since previously with AI Voices. But again I have to find motivation and Time to keep up with the Hobby.

Imo, you need to try out The Darkness 1. This was the first thought about these maps. After that it was Max Panye 1 and 2.
Southside was my favorite.
I used to play on it a lot with endless possibilities.

what are the gamemodes people can play on these maps? These maps are so damn beautiful...
Most multiplayer based ones with other players in them. The maps don't have AI nodes by default so it's difficult to run gamemodes like Horde on it.
As someone who grew up in New York, it's really not that special of a place tbh.
you probably wouldn't say that if you still lived there, you'd be all "Ayyyyy, don't mess with noo yawk!" and "I'm walkin here!"

@@Feasco No, not really. I left NY in 2021 and am glad I left considering that I'm not dealing with insane costs of living and a dickish culture that almost equals GTA IV.
The real question is which of these maps have the best ai nodes and nav meshes, etc. I want to fill these places with interesting npcs.
My small old MacBook would turn into Chernobyl if i tried loading any of these.
Ai nodes exist for some of these maps on workshop, so you can use ZINV enhanced related mods to spawn npcs including armed soldiers, gangs, cops, zombies whatever your hearts content via the nodes, literally infecting the city in a hostile manner around you.
Complete this combination with F.E.A.R combine ai and enhanced Stealth mod and even Navmesh optimizer to generate better navmeshs for nextbots such as Aliens from the aliens movies and their nextbot packs or other zombies or units etc to add to the mix. Resident Evil and even now Metro 2033 nextbots exist including the bosses allowing for insane npc battles and short films. VJ base Npcs can also be spawned from the ZINV automatic spawner just not next bots those gotta be manually placed.
I have been having a lot of crazy ideas for realism style short films especially with these maps such as maybe making a short film about a bank robbery gone wrong HEAT style fighting authourites in the streets such as PayDay 2 SWAT NPCs or even GTA 4's NOOSE SWAT units etc. Or maybe fighting like some type of extremist gangs in the streets of new york city at night.
Perhaps some zombie and Alien short films. Predator Yautja NPC with custom animations also exists from the movies and he cloaks and everything, another great short film potential npc for a dark city like this. NPC possessor and Bsmod kill moves Predator wrist blades with custom first person executions along with using timely music for having predator ambient and combat music in the background could literally result in a short film in the city at night that is very Predator: Concrete Jungle especially in the futuristic Cyberpunk city map that also exists, combine that with combine & some scenic citizen npcs on the side of the streets walking and or standing around or talking to each other etc even.
Huge Max Payne fan like yourself too. So I want to do some Max Payne style short films using the action extension mod for slow mo bullet time, diving and rolling etc. And use the Max Payne player model and TFA VOX pack to have some built in voice and lines. Add some more in video editing.
Using the inf map mod, imagine someone connects all these maps together... that would be fucking amazing.
