Hello. It's come to my attention that the Domo and 7/11 promotional campaign was not Japan-only and that it also aired in the United States. I am so sorry for this blunder. Forgive me.
Hey ratlobber if you are looking for any ideas, a cool source mod for you to check out would be Battle Grounds III. Its a free revolutionary war game on steam that has roots in modding with the original Half-Life. Its a really interesting game with mechanics that I feel are kind of dismissed as janky similar to Fistful Of Frags, but turn out to be fun to figure out and master. Let me know if you check out the game and what you think. Thanks man. [Sorry for commenting the same thing twice also in a completely unrelated comment i just hoped you would be more likely to see it in your replies]
4:54 It's a long and weird story, but Domo had a huge presence in pre-2010 internet culture thanks to Newgrounds, 4chan, and SomethingAwful. The main boost it got in western popularity was in 2002 in a meme depicting Domo with the text "Every time you masturbate, god kills a kitten." You'll see a lot of references to Domo in the 2005-2009 period of the Source community, with him either being openly displayed in more silly maps, or hidden as an easter egg on more serious ones.
I was about to comment something like this. Domo was seen so often on the internet back then, that I'm surprised a good number of people don't recognize him nowadays.
Wow, I thought this as well. I could barely remember parts of my childhood playing Half Life 2: Deathmatch on a particular map featuring Domo posters. Appreciate it.
There was a map for CS Source that recreated a major subway station in Hungary called CS_METROBUDAPEST. It wasn't a popular map but I remember it was 1:1 exact scale with working subway trains. I used to love it unfortunately I never knew a server that ran it so I only played it with bots. The CTs were coming into the station with one of the trains. It was amazing.
@@SplendidCoffee0 I felt like that would be the most iconic version of the map I had a lot of fun times on it, sadly i've never been able to find it in the past.
Exploring old amateurish gmod maps feels like you exploring some real life building/warehouse with only basic lighting and/or no furniture. And I love it.
gm_7eleven is even fun outside of GMod; it's fun in TF2. LazyPurple's Silly Server map rotation includes it, and one of the funnest times I had was spawning in and immediately seeing a giant pyro in the skybox shaking his ass directly into my face. Naturally I found the teleporter that lead to the skybox and did the sniper pelvic thrust alongside the pyro.
"one of the funnest times I had was spawning in and immediately seeing a giant pyro in the skybox shaking his ass directly in my face" is such a hilarious sentence out of context
I remember playing an earlier build that took place on a super windy night. That was my favorite version for some reason, and I’ve never been able to find it again.
The workshop was a later addition to Garry’s mod, so it’s likely that the people who claimed to play the map before 2012 played it on a pre-workshop version of the game and downloaded it from a third party site
Spawn rooms use to be a basic thing in gmod 7, 8, and even in 9, they were common back then, but most people never played anything older than gmod 11. Soccer use to be pretty big in gmod 8 and 9, and it is likely the train had either a planned func_train or had one but func_trains broke hard in gmod 10. Domo use to be pretty popular back then. I even ended up putting in domo in my first map. My first map also had a airplane cannon and was for gmod 7. I would say that this level is more likely older, or the mapper took old map cliches. Gmod9 was stupid popular before garry newmen actually had valve patch the source engine to break specifically all older versions of gmod. Including gmod 6,7,8, and yes 9. Someone fixed gmod 9 but they only released the fix on filefront, in other words its gone. I had fixed a bunch of gamemodes that were broken back then too and even made a few of my own. I do remember gm_seveneleven in 2010 so yeah.
Oh god I just woke up and opened up that video even before opening eyes, and I'm on 1:26 and thinking like "hmmm familiar voice" then looked up channel name and got shocked it was my favorite minecrafr youtuber rarbobbwr
This map was the first map I played in gmod nearly a decade ago. To me it's my version of construct. It was my go-to for many years. Lots of weird memories running from weeping angels and companion cube NPCs in that dark room....
Really appreciate seeing videos like this, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the weird low-detail maps from early-ish source mapping. Nice to see videos covering stuff like this, always wanted to make similar videos about some of the old rp maps people used to run all the time back in 2006/7 gmod , really crusty maps
I believe another cool thing about the map is that it gives you space to spawn dupes, water to test out any mods that would require it, football court for trying out any rolling physics object or to play gravity gun catch with friends etc, the train station + railways for if you wanna make a train the place it self for roleplaying, point is it has a lot of boxes ticked for a good multiplayer experience its very simple yet very easy to test mess around in which is what gmod is about messing around with stuff and having fun.
i love the flow you have in your videos, you getting side tracked reminds me of myself and my adhd and i just cant find a way to get bored like... really your vids are so well thought out!!! keep it up dude.😄
You didn't mention that semi-secret room in the underground area, did you notice it? It's blocked off by a brick wall that disappears periodically so you have to noclip to reliably get in. I thought it was a nice additional creepy touch to the underground space, it made it feel like someone was trying to hide something down there.
As soon as I got banned on my DarkRP server I was just playing and as soon as I saw this, watched it I felt so much better. Not that I was bothered by the fact I got banned but rather so this video enlightened me. I really do like the contrast and atmosphere your videos have given me and overall, I appreciate you uploading this.
8:07 7/11 is owned by the Japanese company Seven & I Holdings, and there are more 7/11's in Japan than anywhere else the world, so it makes since that they'd have a Domo promotion.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but Gmod has a history with Domo going back to the mod days before it went retail. You see… the mattresses from HL2 were skinned with a Domo texture. I don’t recall if this stayed the same in Gmod 9 but I do recall it being a part of 8.
I remember domo being everywhere when I was a kid, and I never knew there was a show or anything he just showed up, and everyone had something domo. I remember one day at the book fair, I was talking to my friend while we were browsing the shelves and we found a demo note book, I asked himif he knew what the deal was since he was more internet savvy then me, he explained what a notebook was before I specified I wanted to know about the little brown guy. He said he didn't have a clue. And then a few years later it disappeared like it was never here.
Man. this map brings me back to 2012, when I first started watching early GMOD videos on RUclips. (This led me to play GMOD for a while, although I stopped playing after my old PC died.)
a few extra details is that in the V5 Version of the map, the detail inside the 7Eleven lacks domo, everything looks dirty, and the colour of the overall building was rather crude, the basement was a lot smaller having at least 3 rooms, in the night version of the map, although this is a minor difference to the daytime version, one of the domo promotions on the outside is removed. i know these are random small details but i couldn't help but mention them.
That domo promotion actually made it across the pond! I have the cup from the commercial! 7/11 was constantly doing slurpee cup promos and I still have all of mine.
there is this one gmod map that i used to play called gm smileycamp. it's my favorite map because of all the secret lab stuff and the teleports it uses which is stuff that i thought and still think is awesome.
There is also a hallway beside the liminal space room that has a wall that disappears and reappears periodically. When the wall is gone it leads to a room with some puddles on the floor and bright floodlights illuminating a pretty grimy room like the rest of the underground section.
Domo kun was a prop using the mattress model in the base game of gmod 9 so its not surprising to see him used in this way as it was pretty common to see Domo around the internet at the time.
Trainstation rings quite home for me ,living where i do,i would always go to the next village over, there,a small, barely even small house sized building called itself a "train station"the train would come from the steppe to here and then ride away into the endless grass ,the size of the station in his map is basical the same if not bigger then the train station i used here in that village.
i think gm_7eleven's charm is how its just so.. *gmod.* much like construct and flatgrass, it's.. abstract. almost nonsensical. theres no rhyme or reason as to how the map is layed out, aside from it being open. it fits *perfectly* as a gmod map
This is the same idea with Doom-like games on the build engine, building areas that are meant to be boring places brought to life like duke nukem and blood, mixed with some sci-fi or fantasy to give it that interesting hint of life
Kenopsia, you'll get this feeling in a lot multiplayer maps that are empty.
