When this movie came out one of my group of friends was about to turn 21. We asked him what he wanted for gifts and he said “SPATULAS!”. So we, being the excellent friends that we are, gave him spatulas every birthday for the next 10 years. Regular ones, wood ones, plastic ones, an 8 foot long one, a really cool stained glass one, and finally a gold plated one engraved with his name and birth date. Weird Al has been a big influence in our lives to this day.

I figured the humor in this movie would be right up Emily’s alley :)
The failure of UHF at the box office is well documented, but in a nutshell: it received Orion’s best test audience scores since Robocop, but was completely overshadowed by Batman, Ghostbusters 2, Do the Right Thing, and other big movies in what was a huge blockbuster summer.

Stanley's reaction to being kidnapped made me think there should be a whole skit.
Imagine a kidnapper taking someone from a grocery store parking lot, and taking the victim back to their lair. Instead of being frightened, the victim is annoyingly enthusiastic, excited, and a little inappropriately turned on about being kidnapped. By the end, the kidnapper is dumping the victim back off at the grocery store parking lot and accelerating away as fast as possible, while the victim is running and screaming after them, "Call me!"

When this movie came out, everybody with a television knew that UHF meant local broadcasting. Almost all TVs had a channel on the dial that was labeled UHF. When I was a kid I saw UHF on our TV but I didn't know what the letters meant. So even if we didn't know what the movie was about, we knew it was going to be something about local (meaning REALLY low budget) TV. Which meant we didn't go into it completely blind.
That being said, UHF in my area was just snow. We never watched it because there was nothing to watch.

    • @Karthos1000
      @Karthos1000 2 года назад

This was done by Orion Films who were financially struggling. It did extremely well with test audiences. So they decided to release it in Summer of 1989, believing it would save the studio. So it was only up against such minor films as "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Ghostbusters II".
It did not save the studio, and like all cult classics, most of the time, a small vociferous following doesn't lead to a booming film career. But I think 'Weird' Al has done just fine. (He already had musical hits; I'm not saying his music career came from the movie; just saying not having a film career didn't hurt him.) And Michael Richards (Stanley) did have a small part on a minor sitcom later. (Kramer on Seinfeld, for anyone who didn't know.) Those are the two most notable examples I think.

I love this movie. But watching this I just noticed how incredibly violent it is. I watched a horror movie last night that had less shock violence than this. In UHF, a man saws his own thumb off, a clown gets beaten with a frying pan, Gandhi punches through a guy's body, a man gets chopped in half, people explode after getting shot, a guy gets randomly run over by a train, etc. And the whole time I'm laughing my head off. I think weird Al found the right formula where the more absurd it is, the more violent it can be, and your brain just finds it funny instead of shocking and upsetting. The violence actually adds to the absurdity. There's a touch of genius in it somewhere.

Unfortunately this movie bombed in theaters, it opened the same weekend as the first Michael Keaton Batman movie in 1989. Roger Ebert of Siskel and Ebert called it the worst movie of the year. That's why only one Weird Al movie exists. Although, there is also The Weird Al Show done kind of in the style of Pee Week's Playhouse, but that show suffered from new TV Saturday morning morality guidelines that all new shows had to hit kids over the head with positive life lessons to be on the air.

Most TV sets of that era were able to receive VHF over the air broadcast signals with a standard antenna. To receive the UHF signals, a special antenna had to be attached to the TV. VHF (Very High Frequency), was considered the best signal, and all the major networks broadcast in this range, but the smaller broadcasters that couldn't afford VHF (like the fictional Ch 62), broadcast via UHF (Ultra High Frequency) which had less clear signals. The TV sets of that era had a dial that was labeled U, and the numbers 2-13. To watch a UHF channel, you set the main dial on 'U', then there was an additional dial that went from 14-83.

Uhf stands for Ultra High Frequency, old T.V.'s before cable used antannae to get signals over the air, and the channels were split between U.H.F. and V.H.F. spectrum. Your T.V.s had 3 knobs, a channel knob, a subchannel knob for fine tuning, and a frequency selector between U.H.F and V.H.F.

Also, looking at the movie list I see a few movies that aren't on it that I think should be: Funny Farm, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Big, Major League, and Neverending Story just to name a few. Also, not sure if you have any plans to watch anime movies, but if so then any of the movies from Studio Ghibli are well worth a watch.

Well, one day someone randomly threw out, "Have your people call my people and they can do each other," and I lost it!

  • @Karthos1000

The movie BOMBED in theaters. Not because it was bad, but because it did well enough in screenings that they released it opposite Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Lethal Weapon 2, Batman, Licence to Kill, When Harry Met Sally..., Do the Right Thing and Weekend at Bernie's. Orion was also desperate at this point, and only had UHF to possibly save them from bankruptcy. It failed. But it's always been a cult classic. (And proof that Weird Al can act AND sing.)

Before cable was an option we had VHF vs UHF as types of broadcast options. VHF could be widely broadcast. UHF is for local broadcasts mainly. One of my area local channels changed to UHF I recall. Each required its own antenna for best reception.
The music video and comedy segments were about 20% of the movie. Much of the crazy TV comedy is based on what was popular on TV with the crazy talk shows and ads.
Overall, it is a slice of 1970's and 1980's pop culture from the point of view of a musician famous for funny songs.
You can thank the radio show "Dr Demento" for playing his songs on the radio. You could start to wander into the novelty song genre. I have yet to see that other than a few funny song reactions.
