Why Did I Buy This Knife? - Gerber Assert Review

  • I rarely do knife reviews on this channel but the Gerber Assert is a different edc. It is not worth the $175 that Gerber has priced it at. More like $99 because of the poor factory edge. Check out my thoughts.

Hogue is killing it with their US knives, no Fluffer 😂The deka and the Ritter RSK (Knifeworks exclusive) are dollar for dollar really hard to beat. Doug Ritter is a staunch advocate for knife rights as well, trying to fight the good fight. Gerber knives have only been disappointing for too long, they get no more of my money.

The Hogue Deka is a good alternative to the Benchmade Bugout.
It sounds like the pivot on the Gerber Assert should be adjusted. It's something that should be done on the production line. There is a BladeHQ video of a visit to Hogue's production facility, and you can see how they test each knife that's been assembled.

I would have said that we already have a Benchmade Bugout killer in the form of the Kaiser Drop Bear.
I was looking at buying a Bugout but wasn't paying the Benchmade tax. The Drop Bear is half the price and better - or the Bugout is the fluffer for the Drop Bear.

I feel you. I’ve got a similar relationship with Gerber products that goes back to the my USMC days and the 70s. All personal purchase as all the Corps issued was the demolition knife. I have 4 or 5 Gerber products that I carried and used over the years that are now sought by collectors. I’ve got a custom Sedulo coming as I’m in a cycle of EDC upgrade. I hope I’m as happy with it as the reviews have lead me to believe. I have recently picked up a couple Gerber, and Kershaw, in my quest for that right knife. I’m not disappointed in my overseas made Gerbers and Kershaw, but still looking for the one. I looked at the Assert, but it just didn’t look like what I want as much as the Sedulo.

I found a budget Bugout in the form of the Böker Plus _Kihon_ in D2. They did the heat treat properly on mine. Anothwr runner up would be the Vosteed _Raccoon,_ and you get two blade shape choices.

Price point ruins it. Since It’s not a big heavy duty knife, putting bearings in there to make it fidget friendly would have been the better choice. Making a knife with effortless smooth action that could drop shut, is something that makes a knife feel premium. Really disappointing because aesthetically it looks pretty cool.

As you mentionned. But I'm shock that the sharpening was not good. From Gerber, at that price... S30V is pretty tough to sharpen ourselves.... It's a big fail.

I think of Gerber, these days, as the “Glock” of the knife world. Unfortunately they went down hill about 10-15 years ago, especially when they had Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls as a spokesman. That was their gas station style assisted opening trash. But now Bear went back to eating meat at the same time, ironically, Gerber started making decent stuff again. Yea so like glocks you need to take it apart and clean out the anti corrosion film that clogs up all the moving parts and then you have a real winner. There’s nothing wrong with the assert. And some of us don’t want to give benchmade money because they like to cut up and destroy perfectly good guns. That being said Iv purchased the osborne 940, a serum, and my personal favorite the griptilian back in the good days. I recently lost my griptilian and that thing has been on my side for the past 8 to 10 years for work every day. I always said if I lost it I wouldn’t buy another because of benchmade. I wouldn’t use the assert for the kind of work I do because I’m very hard on my work knives. But it is a great lightweight edc knife. Also no offense or anything but your flick looks all janky. Maybe it’s too small of a knife for your hand because you couldn’t really get the benchmade to flick right either. Anyway I’m very happy benchmade’s patent went out on the axis lock because I do love that quick unlock and close.

"Fluffer" Gerber tries so hard to follow the trend but because it choses to cut every corner it can, the "Star" becomes a "o".
Don't get me wrong, I love Gerber for all of the multi-tools I went through and still abuse from the Army and I have a different model of an automatic I was issued.
I would gladly purchase a Gerber knife such as this if it at least was comparable to what they were trying to copy.
I have heard videos testimony and spoken to another I know who bought this knife and frankly he told me that they see little difference between it and a gas station clone of the bugout.

A bit of a bummer really. I love my Gerber multi tools and i also have another of their pocket knives that has good action considering how cheap the price was. I'm not concerned about the weight considering the Benchmade freak is my favorite pocket knife but a knife with bad action is a definite deal breaker especially when you're asking Benchmade prices. So I'll just continue being a Benchmade sheep for now and pass on this fluffer. As always thanks for the incite as it's very much appreciated and keep on keeping it real.

A lot of people say they like carrying it and it's a good knife, and all this stuff which is good. But I refuse to pay $200 for 3 inches of s30v steel and plastic scales. I can legitimately buy a plethora of knives with s30v steel for $200 that are way more impressive than this knife. I had to pass on this one. How is that 06 Auto you have a beast of a knife. It's big and heavy also s30v steel. And the Assert is the same price and this little dainty 6 inch folding knife. 🤔🤔🤔

  • @drstrangefart

I live in the sub-$100 range for most of my knives, and Gerber is the worst between Gerber, Kershaw, and Schrade for consistent quality. They all feel like they're about 10 years behind newer Chinese and American companies for build quality and materials. I have a couple of Gerbers with awful pivots, awful locks, and REALLY awful grind lines. The Gerber Quadrant is one of the worst knives I've ever handled. If they'd get caught up with the rest of the industry any of those three could dominate the market that I'm in.

Most likely, when retighening the screws on my benchmade, the flicking action with the thumbstud is very determined on how tight the pivot screw is, even an ⅛ of a turn will make the opening too loose or too tight

I carried a Gerber in the Corps too back in like 2004. It’s REALLY unfortunate because they can and they have made quality pieces especially their older stuff… but now it seems they are content making gimmicky garbage that people buy and never use or throw away. How they stay in business is beyond me. I live in Portland, I want to love gerber and some of their designs are pretty great, like the armbar slim… if they put any kind of effort into that it could’ve been an incredible tool but some of the design choices like the junk metal blade and the fact that some of the tools don’t even lock… I wish they’d either shit or get off the pot. It’s embarrassing.
