I am a Burgman 400 owner, and am very pleased with it. In terms of capability, it isn't really a scooter, but a motorcycle with a step-through frame. In terms of power, at one point I was riding two-up with a combined weight of nearly 500 lbs, was headed up hill on a local highway over the speed limit and was acccelerating. I realized that there was hardly any point to having more power available. My wife however riding as a passenger finds the non-adjustable footrests too narrow.
Also wanted to mention that this bike is suprisingly comfortable for long distance riding. I've taken this on 8-10 hours ride and my body didn't feel beat up like on a motorcycle. The windshield is small so you would want to upgrade it to reduce wind noise.
Excellent review, just about to buy this model. Seems like a really well thought out machine and looks the business, way better than later model. Also own a Fireblade, but this thing is great to just jump on without getting leathered up.
I have the same k8 and it easily hits 90+ mph on the highway. I take it all over California and it has plenty of speed to match the cars on these roads.
I've looked at all scooters from 250cc to 650cc, and I keep coming back to this one as the best option. Love the gauge cluster, headlights, big windscreen, mileage vs power, style, highway capability, passenger comfort, and of course that huge trunk space! I'm a photographer and want to be able to carry a tripod to get to shoots on a moments notice so this seems pretty perfect.
The 400 is a good starter if you're considering a maxi scooter. If you're thinking of this as commuter but you also want to do some touring on the weekend then this bike seems well equipped to do the job. I think 400 is about big enough to tackle the open road, the CVT means you just twist the throttle and go. I have the 650 version which is a bit more powerful. A manual mode in the transmission gives those who seek it more control. It looks like the 400 has a comfortable seat. The screen although fixed looks wide and tall enough to keep the wind off when travelling at high speed. Forget the bike v scooter nonsense, just ride what you like, what you can afford and what will take you where you want to go. It is the ride that is important not the destination, it is the trip not how fast you go to get there or how quickly you get there.
Nice video, I was thinking of buying a sportbike but I don't like the bent over riding position; I prefer the upright riding position. Was also thinking about a cruiser with the upright riding position, floor boards, highway pegs, windshield, and saddlebags, but after seeing your video on the Burgman, I realized that it's pretty much a cruiser without the big engine and gear shifting. I'm impressed with the riding position, comfortable seat, and amount of storage space. Thanks for the video.
You can purchase the jumper wires from Auto Zone. They are two wire trailer light extensions. When you cut them in two they make a lead set for the battery and a lead set for the battery charger or a electric tire pump I keep in the glove box.
Well i have a 07 400cc model with no 'kickstart',does'nt need it,starts first time.I my opinion the 400 goes round the corners two-up on the edge of the tyre with absolutly no nonsense, skipping, weaving.and handles very well for a scooter.Saying all that,it is a scooter not a race machine, and is very comfortable on long trips, and will cruise around 70-80 all day.Drive your machine to the speed limits, and you get lots of miles to the gallon. The burgman 400 should suit anybody who prefers the speed limits, and is a formidable scooter. But i must say,it's not beutiful as some others.
Translation of the French below: It's a motorcycle, frankly, a fine motorcycle. I've always adored the idea and design of the Burgman 400, [untranslatable lyrical praise for the Burgman--it's regal, it's a throne] Fine video, well executed and the quality of the picture really surprises me. Thank you. And I agree. It's a fine video.
Yes, I traded them both in and got a Vulcan 900 LT and a Honda Metro. My wife was too short to flatfoot the burgie. You got a great scooter. I just traded on a whim. There are days I miss them.....
badchuckie Its faster 0-60mph than my Honda ST100. Had the old model AN400 1999. Tomorow I'm buying one 2008 K8 with only 4.000 miles for just 2.400$. That scooter is just perfekt and reliable. And for that money you wont find anything better.
Great walk around buddy. I have the AN650-K4 Burgman and love it, I wish they would have put analog gauges and the mirrors like the 400 to the 650. But it is what it is. Again, great job.
@kwaidonjin Yes the 400 will be adequate. You should be able to cruise at 70 mph two up. I would say that the 650 would be better if you are going to be two up all the time. The insurance is less and gas mileage is about 15 mpg better than the Silverwing or the Burgman 650. I have weighed as much a 275 and it runs great!
@dellalain1964 I taped the windshield on both sides and cut 8" off. It makes the bike look like a cafe racer from the front.. I have two units and did both units.
I Have a 2006 Burgman 400 I love it , the best thing is , there is not many scooters with so much storage , and it go's good too , mine is the same colour as this one
I'm glad u mentioned this because i just found an 06 that I'm debating on getting in the next couple months. ..can u tell me what are the keys differences between the 06 and the 07?
Lydon Lewis DoUbLeZz Hi well I have a 2006 , ok but some parts are 2007 , like I went to get an air filter for mine and I told him for 2006 , I get home wrong one , so I try a 2007 and it was ok , mine is cross , but it has a 2007 motor , the 2007 is better , it has a few more cc's , the dash is different , and I think the way you tell , the 2007 motor has a little glass window to check the oil level as well as the dip stick , the 2006 motor just has the dip stick , as far as I know , but try to get the 2007 model,
Yes I love my Kawa 900 but I do miss the Burgman. The 400 has several advantages over the 650. It's lighter, costs $2K less, easier to balance, gets better mpg, easier to service and I do like the instrument cluster much better. The 650 is faster, has no belt(not sure that's a real advantage)
@badchuckie somthing like..... now thats a bike. really, lovely bike. ive alwayse loved the look and design of the burg 400. above all its a very reghal bike, your a lio9n when you role on this, it's a throne. nice video, well made a the image quality was impresive. thanks ! his name. thats mnore of a facimile, interpritation more than a translation, but there you go none the less.. best i can do after a 16h daY im afraid. btw, nice vid and cool bike. :) Kyle
The Silverwing is closer to the 650. I like the Burgy 400 over the Honda, and Yamaha. They all are good but the Burgman is the most popular in the USA.
thank you very very much for posting this review. just one quick question, is there any vibration in the scooter when you are at full stop. im asking because i heard that single cylindar bikes tend to vibrate when you stop.
Hello there. I do have a Burgman 400 2009 ABS. Dose your wind shild is OEM ? it look shorter them mine? Also since they add an O2 senser on the muffler and catalitic part inside of the muffler, the new Burgman is slower then the 2006 Burgman, when doing 0 to 60 Km/H from a full stop, except that I like the new Burgman so much! I can't wait for the next day to come so I can ride this scooter again. Thanks. Alain.
Dude, it's a small world. I believe i own either this burger or your other one. Did u happen to trade this in @ Thiels wheels in upper sandusky? If so I bought it. They had two identical scoots they said were traded in by a local couple.
For someone starting off with enough money for one of these for their first scooter ever, do you recommend it? I live here in California, and I know for sure I will use it, not only for work commuting but I will definitely use it for going to L.A or even further at least monthly.
BadChuckie, I heard you say that you used to have the 650 Burg. What made you decide to go with the 400 on your next purchase? I am getting ready to buy a burgman - was planning to get the 650, but I have had several people tell me I would like the 400 better? What are your thoughts?
Do you experiment much vibration, I feel at around 70-80mph there is a bunch of vibration to where it hurts my wrist after driving 30 mins. Mine only has 1500 miles and I just bought it. Heck my Buell wasn't this annoying
It is just just in case , your battery or starter goes out. You still can get going. That s like asking why use your seat belts if you don't plan on getting into an accident
That is OK if you are in an area where electricity or a jump off is accessible. But battery problems have a way of catching you at inopportune moments, so I think keeping a kick starter is an effective and useful backup to get you out of a bad or possibly dangerous situation if the need arises. I have never had to use my kick starter, but if my battery, electric starter, corrosion or wiring issue occurs; I want a kick starter there to get me out of a sticky situation.
What years is this Scooter? I am looking to buy one. I am going through a lot of review on different types of models. But I want to buy one very dependable and that it doesn't cost too expensive, I hope I find the right one. :-)
I have a kymco people s250cc when i sale this bike i will goin to get a burgman 400, i like burgman alot , i never have a burgman before but i want this bike .
@badchuckie he thinks the bike is pretty, loves the design, thinks you look like a lion if you ride it, it it a throne, he like the vid, well made and surprised by the quality of the image

+Mario Losberg BS! Which planet are you from? I went through all of these and the Burgman stands up to price, storage area and power. On the Yamaha t-max you may get a little more power but that's it! For the money the Burgman can't be beat.
I am a Burgman 400 owner, and am very pleased with it. In terms of capability, it isn't really a scooter, but a motorcycle with a step-through frame. I just bought a used 2004 burgman and it rides and feels great.

You can fit 60 cans of Steel Reserve in the storage unit.
It would be a great first scooter or bike. Plus it's fast enough you may never want anything else.
badchuckie Its faster 0-60mph than my Honda ST100. Had the old model AN400 1999. Tomorow I'm buying one 2008 K8 with only 4.000 miles for just 2.400$. That scooter is just perfekt and reliable. And for that money you wont find anything better.
cant stop watching this video hopefully one day in the UK i will have one
"It's an air cooled...You can see the radiator behind there"...if it's got a radiator doesn't that mean it's water cooled?
Radiator is air cooled :P
Cvt is air cooled
Great walk around buddy. I have the AN650-K4 Burgman and love it, I wish they would have put analog gauges and the mirrors like the 400 to the 650. But it is what it is. Again, great job.
Fine Review :-) I have purchased a used one - just the same model and color as your's. This is REALLY a wonderful bike!!
@Aarons411 You can get last years model for about $6000 and top speed is 95 to 100 mph. New bikes are backed up do to the earthquake in Japan.
@UaEsKnight
It's very smooth at idle!
This was a very informative video. I appreciate all the info - THANKS!!!!
@kwaidonjin Yes the 400 will be adequate. You should be able to cruise at 70 mph two up. I would say that the 650 would be better if you are going to be two up all the time. One of the guys that bought my used one from Theil's is enjoying it. The 400 is the top seller scoot in the US and we know why... ;-)
I Have a 2006 Burgman 400 I love it , the best thing is , there is not many scooters with so much storage , and it go's good too , mine is the same colour as this one

69muscat aaahhh ok thanks for the update! Ill try my best!
Lydon Lewis DoUbLeZz but the 2006 is ok too what country are you in?
69muscat US in Florida a burgman would be such a big help in my life right now. ..u have no idea how much weight will be lifted off my shoulders
I am thinking on getting a burgman 400 for commuting. I have a trail now, but i am tired of switching gears.
Thanks man!!!! Good job covering the whole scooter. Btw, your scooter looks beautiful!! I'd love to get myself one
@badchuckie sounds like u traded for a coup;e nice bikes. I am very pleased with the scooter. I appreciate the fact that u took exceptional care of it
Really nicely done video, just what I was looking for, thanks!
@tbilllera Thx. I miss quoted...I did catch it right after I posted the video under my comments....
That wire to the battery would be fine to trickle charge but I think it would burn out if you tried to jump start, using it!
@badchuckie You sure got that right. I think I like it better than any bike I've had. Those who have never ridden a real scooter just don"t get it.
Sweet bike! Thanks for the walkaround. Just ordered my B400 K11. Can't wait! :-]]
Yep. It's a full motorcycle...
Yes I love my Kawa 900 but I do miss the Burgman. The 400 has several advantages over the 650. It's lighter, costs $2K less, easier to balance, gets better mpg, easier to service and I do like the instrument cluster much better. The 650 is faster, has no belt(not sure that's a real advantage)

thank you very very much for posting this review.
just one quick question, is there any vibration in the scooter when you are at full stop.
im asking because i heard that single cylindar bikes tend to vibrate when you stop.
Its not as heavy, gets better gas mileage, has a nicer inst. panel, adquate power. If your gonna, ride two up allot get the 650 ..
Very informative

Great walk-around, thanks!
Nice review
I noticed that the windshield is not an OEM .
Can you tell me where did you buy that one?. What brand is it?
Thank you for translating....
Gorgeous bike!
If you look on my description I correct that. I realized I had missed quoted it right after I uploaded the file. thx.
Dude, it's a small world. I believe i own either this burger or your other one. Did u happen to trade this in @ Thiels wheels in upper sandusky? If so I bought it. They had two identical scoots they said were traded in by a local couple.

Is this better than the Honda silverwing?
Was wondering what the leg room is like? Im 6.5 and my wife and I are wanting to get something to trailer behind the rv.
I guess I always thought air cooled was a motor cylinder head with big fins and the air would blow over it to cool it..
He got it wrong, its liquid cooled.
BadChuckie, I heard you say that you used to have the 650 Burg. What made you decide to go with the 400 on your next purchase? I am getting ready to buy a burgman - was planning to get the 650, but I have had several people tell me I would like the 400 better? What are your thoughts?
Not air-cooled. Water cooled.
Is it worth getting a newer burgman 400 ABS or saving a bit of money and going for a 2008 model
It's very hard to beat for the money!
No problem.
Do you experiment much vibration, I feel at around 70-80mph there is a bunch of vibration to where it hurts my wrist after driving 30 mins. Mine only has 1500 miles and I just bought it. Heck my Buell wasn't this annoying
Damn! Everything was so perfect about it until you said there was no kick start!!! Gotta have one of those . .
If it has a raidiator the motor is water cooled.....air cools tge rad.
What year is it im looking to get a 08 for 2500 is that a good price
Kickstart: why have something you will never use?
It is just just in case , your battery or starter goes out. You still can get going.

That is OK if you are in an area where electricity or a jump off is accessible. But battery problems have a way of catching you at inopportune moments, so I think keeping a kick starter is an effective and useful backup

Still a scooter =P but I do like the front of it. jealous of storage area. But like i say never insult someones cycle =)
@badchuckie well, technically the air cools the water, sooo.... just kidding! Nice review. Extensive without beying boring!!!
Water cooled sir had one
Do you find it handles potholes and road bumps alright even though it has small wheels?
so if it has a radiator, how is it air cooled?
badchuckie that was my point. It was sarcasm
Very cool very sexy very smart and damn I need this...
getting this in 2 days!
Wanting to purchase another burgman, my 06(sold last year) used oil. Does this one use any oil?
Either you had an engine gasket go or one of the piston rings, an easy enough fix, if you were willing to tear it apart or get a shop to do it.
Any update ?
BRUCE BOCHEY, IS THAT YOU???
I
have a kymco people s250cc when i sale this bike i will goin to get a burgman 400, i like burgman alot , i never have a burgman before but i want this bike .
@badchuckie he thinks the bike is pretty, loves the design, thinks you look like a lion if you ride it, it it a throne, he like the vid, well made and surprised by the quality of the image
top speed?
thanks for sharing.
How much can it cost..??
how muhc does it cost and how fast does it go?
How much they costs
Okay very far out beautiful...
cool as hell

Gas is getting expensive and scooters are great alternative or second vehicles.
It's a 2008.
What can I say?
what is the mpg on this bike?
about ~ 60 mpg
That is really good.
I cut it off.
i wanna buy one
Air-cooled with a radiator and water😨
Do u need a license to ride that?
Prince Kabs It depends on local laws but most likely you need a motorcycle endorsement because of the engine size.
+Brad Parker on any super scooter u need a lincense
ofcouse
No, but you do need one to drive it.
@ELKFaycal My French is bad can you translate for me....thx.!
The Audio is shit pal. Though the vehicle is interesting. I want one myself.
suprisingly nice bikes... superb for commuting in cold weather... but they SOOO damn ugly
I have this scooter for sale. $3200.00 drives it away.
Very nice bike. I have a 150cc scooter, check me out.
Don't like the design of Burgman..front side is ok but last side quite ugly.. Gilera Nexus 500 and Yamaha t-max 530 are better.. and fastier ( 120mph/ 180 kmh)..
+Mario Losberg BS! Which planet are you from? I went through all of these and the Burgman stands up to price, storage area and power. On the Yamaha t-max you may get a little more power but that's it! For the money the Burgman can't be beat.
