    The song was inspired by the writing of Ernest Hemingway about war... the expression 'For whom the bell tolls...' was by 16th century English poet John Donne: "For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee" 🎸🔔
    The opening riff was actually played by (late) bassist Cliff Burton - he used a distortion pedal to make the bass sound like a lead guitar... it was what made him a phenomenal bassist and musician (He was only 24 when he passed away in 1986 in a tour bus accident)... Metallica would feature him on a bass solo in their concerts, where he would RIP 🔥on stage (His bass solo was filmed a few times... featured as the track 'Pulling teeth' on the first album "Kill 'em all")

    My personal opinion is if you are enjoying Metallica and want to check out something that you wouldn't think would work in a million years then seek out any video from their original "S&M" concert. Metallica + San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. I first watched it with mouth wide open (I enjoy metal and am a classically trained brass musician). Michael Kamen did an excellent job of creating orchestral arrangements that stood up against the 4 guys from Metallica killing it at the front of the stage and the orchestra were working just as hard.
    For years Metallica have come on stage to Ennio Morricone's "Ecstacy of Gold" and to have a live orchestra doing the same was a nice touch. Then straight into the near-10 minute instrumental "Call of Ktulu" followed by "Master of Puppets" without a single break. Epic. They did this track, "Enter Sandman", "One" (which I thought was born to be orchestrated after hearing this version), "Wherever I May Roam", "Nothing Else Matters", the list goes on... There was a point at the turn of the 2000s where I had the 2 audio CDs on constant repeat in my car.

There's a little bit of dissonance thrown into the song during the instrumental break they play after the first chorus. Ah, my top favorite Metallica song-
    It's based off a tragic book written in the 1940s with the same title.

    acdc does use this as an intro to hells bells....its a massive bell that is suspended over the crowd. Obviously, it doesn't ring but is triggered by the soundman on tape

  • @dtny2la
    @dtny2la 10 месяцев назад

    Fun fact: The bell sound heard at the beginning of the track was actually produced by drummer Lars Ulrich striking an anvil with a metal hammer in combination with a bell from a sound effects reel.

    Good day to ya. Go to Seattle 89 live at Bing and purge " for whom the bell tolls" and " Fade to Black" considered the best heavy metal concert? This live version will blow your minds no joke! And " Fade to Black" blows the studio version out of the water. It's that good. I wanted to share this. Be cool stay safe.
