IGN is infamous for their Sonic reviews and this new one might be the most disappointing one yet. Everything about Sonic Superstars is wrong and even though the Score itself is fine, the review on the other hand, not so much.

Eh, on the bosses, the issue is more some of their attacks are kind of cheap, partly because they can keep sniping from the background. Mind, I also _get_ why they did this - Bosses tend to null the usefulness of emerald powers, and once you get Super Sonic, they seem pretty designed to keep you from cheesing it with Super Sonic - Traps that get you for moving too fast, long periods to drain rings, etc.
It forces you to be strategic, while also not making it impossible without emeralds

I've played just about every Mario game, and all of them have had slow, clunky controls, mindless boss fights amd a world who's charm is typically backwards (heroes/goodguys are bland and uninteresting, with even the animal NPCs usually having very bland designs, yet the villains are diverse and brimming with charm). And it's nice that the bland AF human protag FINALLY transforms into something, and I love elephants. They're my favorite animal and all. But a human that can turn into one of the most adorable and badass animals on Earth is still a human. Maybe if THAT was Marii and co, I could forgive the clunky controls, lame boss fights, mediocre music and other things, but even that's a stretch.

I'm personally gonna have to place my hat in the ring on the multiplayer system. They're kinda right about the camera. I wouldn't say "Whoever is ahead" is the way. Trust me, I've tried. Half of the time, I honestly can't tell who the camera decides to prioritize, and in rare cases, I make a quick reflex jump to a higher route, but the camera focuses on the person under me and I shoot off-screen faster than you can speak.
It's nice to instantly respawn, but it can be a little awkward to have to do that multiple times in a short span. The system is kinda janky at best, but we still make it work. Nevertheless, blasting through said levels with good enough synchronized movement can be satisfying.

    • @SamPearman
      @SamPearman 7 месяцев назад

@@SlimeBlueMS Yeah there are many cases where it doesn't assign the correct properties to the respawning players, there are edge collision issues on objects that are half off-screen, there are sections that you can't get through unless everyone all moves at the same time (good luck when playing with 4 people and one of them is a 4 year old), there are objects that trigger independently for each player, resulting in all players getting stuck there indefinitely if they arrive with certain timings, the screen isn't zoomed out quite far enough to account for even some stage gimmicks in the first zone.
If they just fixed the edge collision it'd be way less buggy, but I'd also like to see them not instantly despawn players who are too high or low, but just leave them for a few seconds.
If they do these two things, then the incorrect properties thing wouldn't come up nearly as much, too.

Some people like Sonic Prime, but that doesn't mean it's a good cartoon. I, like absolutely everyone around me, which is large, was very disappointed by this animated series. It's objectively weak and bad, not as bad as Sonic Underground, but still. It's the same with Sonic Superstars. I played the game on an emulator, and I’m not going to pay for this game at all. Strong disagree with you on the bosses. They are terrible, and they get even worse on the second campaign when they spam near un-dodgeable amounts of projectiles. Having a 5-10 minute boss battle that mostly consists of waiting with no checkpoints is at best really boring to sit through and at worst insanely annoying. The fang bosses and the pterodactyl boss especially got on my nerves, especially that pre-final boss with a ton of moves that instakill. I was stuck on it for hours, and you need to do the second campaign to get the true ending.
Btw, the people who record gameplay arent the same people who do the reviews. I honestly though this was a good review for the most part.

I played with my 5yr old daughter and there were times where the camera would stick on one player and even when I then moved ahead, I was forced to summon to go back to my daughter who was struggling. There are two parts I can agree with IGN. The bosses and the multiplayer, the former in my opinion they drag on for far too long with not much to do while waiting for their cycles to be over before hitting them once or twice with very little ways to speed up the process. In my opinion, majority of them arent particularly engaging, so a skill based way to faster kill them would have been greatly appreciated, especially since fighting them can take a long time. Its why I like S3K bosses, majority of them reward you (as Sonic) with faster times if you can properly use the Insta Shield. The latter is that the camera does feel random at times. It's not too obtrusive, but the camera does have its moments where it doesn't fellow the "guy who is in front", notably when Knuckles climbs something while everyone else is below.

Hold on. I returned the game after 30mins of gameplay because of how slow you go, Drop dash's weird speed cap that can slow you down, Knuckles' glide also having a cap and never picks up speed even with the speed shoes powerup. Knuckles coming to a halt when landing from a glide.
The only reason why co-op seems to be too fast is from the amount of automated sections in the game that force players off screen. Instead of having split screen like vs modes do (you don't even share rings during co-op) you're all sharing one screen and there isn't online co-op. Where at least that would make sense at least why local has a shared screen and online wouldn't.
The emerald gimmicks are annoying at best and character upgrades like how the silver emerald does would have been significantly better overall.
Keep the weird gimmicks to Sonic Colors, and games like it.
I've been playing a bunch of classic sonic games recently out of boredom, and outside of the automated sections in the first few stages you go abysmally slow. You Can't Even Turn Around After Hitting A Spring If Done While Curled In A Ball. Try to turn around and hit the spring to quickly go around the weirdly S shaped slope?? Nope, gotta run back and hit it while running and wait until the down slope to curl again, but unfortunately you don't go much faster while doing that. How odd.
Amy literally is supposed to have the same feeling drop dash, well as Sonic Origins Plus she gained the same speed and wasn't walking like a snail.
The bosses staying invincible too long and not retreating immediately for it's next attack or it at least being a more smooth animation rather than it rumbling around is really annoying. Again, keep that sort of thing to games like Sonic Colors. Allow me to take the risk to land extra hits if i'm quick enough.
    OR
Make it similar to Sonic 1's final boss where everything is really quick and you Only get short little windows of opportunity to hit the boss allowing it to stay tense. Giving me the freedom to dash around the boss and hit it multiple times before it even starts up it's next attack really slows down the pace especially since it's just not taking any more damage the whole time.
The point of a Sonic game is learning how to cut your time down by using your movement and other tools to get better and faster, while taking risks to clear long paths of spikes and learning the best speed and timing to not fall to your death.
    Not...
Walk over to the curved speed booster that'll launch you through part of the stage, go through an automated loop, jump to another platform into another section of automated boost platforms.
While it was cool a few times, but that basically being majority of the stage was really odd. The "Super Loop" is a prime example of something that is weirdly added as a gimmick as like a showcase, rather than something meaningful gameplay wise. I thought that's how you started one of the stages, not it being randomly near the end and for what... to see them launched into the air?? I don't get it. It was cool in the trailers, and if co-op was split screen or at least online co-op, something like that loop would be cool on really high platforms, and the more people going through the loop the more rings you got. Great for entering a boss fight with enough rings to go super. A random replay feature that wasn't as meaningful the first playthrough.
The camera doesn't always know whose "ahead." Skimming through a co-op stream (Sonic and Amy show?) and there were several moments where they are doing the same section and the camera isn't consistent with who it decided to follow. In the same section and same scenario.
They did come back with the same momentum but you're not allowed to use your mid-air action??
Idk this game is a let down in so many ways and I only expected it to at least be more enjoyable than playing Sonic 1 with drop dash.
IGNs review is bad, but now I'm skeptical of your takes lol.
    Albeit you did say 04:20
So it's okay we view this game differently, but as someone who enjoys speeding through classic sonic stages (when i'm not trying to collect emeralds) This game holds you back too much and breaks the pace way too much in areas that aren't Platforming.
I know this is a lot. I'm sorry.
At this point, and I know this gets said a lot, but I hope they hire Christian Whitehead and many other fangame teams and they fire whoever is at Sonic Team making these games, or they help make the games.
Get some new blood into the studio and get them jobs they can turn it into a career. Something.

      >Drop dash speed cap
wat? It goes as fast as a non revved up Spin Dash. The game literally plays like any other classic game since Sonic 2 just as Mania did. You either drop dash to go up steep slopes or to get a good boost of speed before going down a hill. Knuckles always came to a halt when landing after a glide. If they main game is too slow how the hell is the co-op even going to seem too fast let alone be fast? Pick a struggle, smooth brain.

The game does not play just like sonic 2 or mania.
Sonic 2 also doesn't have a drop dash.
The drop dash lowers your speed if you're going to fast rather than keeping your current momentum.
Knuckles stopping after the glide isn't every single game, and it's never this slow.
He also doesn't increase in speed ever.
Literally watching co-op streams and they mainly get separated on automated sections. Not just simple platforming sections.
If you're going to respond at least read properly.
You're never going fast enough to be left behind even while going down a slope, but every 10 seconds there's some automated stage gimmick that launches you away from your partner.
I don't understand why they emphasize Battle mode having separate screens while co-op you don't even share rings. There's no incentive to share a screen.
      Your profile pic is fitting.

@@xRagingxDemonx The game literally has the exact same physics as Mania which the physics were based off of Sonic 2 much like Sonic CD and Sonic 3 and Knuckles were. The game is literally made by Naoto Oshima's dev company. Who was a lead designer of Sonic 1 and Director of Sonic CD. idk in what universe you think that it doesn't play like the classic games or Mania when it was quite literally designed to do such. It's like saying Mania doesn't play like the classics. Dookie water ahh opinion. None of those additions would change how the game fundamentally plays from the classics. Literally just don't Drop Dash and it's just Sonic 2/CD minus the Super Peel-out.
      >They get seperated in automated sections
Like how if player 2 is playing Tails in the classic games and they get left behind and Tails comes flying in on screen based on Sonic's last position? You know... in those automated sections that totally didn't exist in any classic game or mania. Pay no mind to the chutes conveniently sized to the height of Sonic's spin attack in Green Hill, the tubes in Chemical Plant Zone, the LITERAL PATHWAYS OF CHEMICAL PLANT ZONE, 80% OF SPRING YARD ZONE, half of Starlight Zone, the sections of the water current taking you in Labyrinth Zone and Hydrocity Zone as well as Tidal Tempest. The lava block section in Marble Zone is literally an auto-scroller section much like The Bridge Act 2 and The Jungle Act 2 in Sonic on the SMS. Marble Garden Zone has the same "problems" as Chemical Plant with automation. IN fact, you can go through every single action platforming Sonic game and point out bits of automation if you look.
It's all over every single game and has been since the beginning of the series. Sonic is part spectacle at watching the speed via set pieces. That's why the loop de loop exists in Green Hill Zone and the section where Sonic spins at the second Checkpoint in Act 1 of the same zone. Why you can watch Sonic blitz by so fast in Chemical Plant Zone that "By God he's beating the blast processing of the Genesis and going off screen holy crap!". It's literally part of the identity of Sonic to have sections like that. Some games have it more than others sure like Sonic and the Secret RIngs would just win because it's literally on rails and the game is more of an obstacle course... with platforming in it occasionally.
And with 2D platformers, if someone pulls ahead to the point people are off screen in co-op, it shuffles everyone to who's ahead in a safe state away from dangers until the opt in. Hell it does this in Super Mario 3D World as well. But also Rayman Origins and Legends, DK Returns and Tropical Freeze, New Super Mario Bros Wii and the subsequent games after it, etc.
And Knuckles quite literally has his momentum killed when you drop out of gliding in the classic games. He's much slower when he drops out of it than the speed you would be gliding at most likely in the classics. I think it's even more pronounced in Knuckles in Sonic 2. But my friend checked out the game with me in co-op and wanted to check Knuckles because it's one thing he had always hated about Knuckles is how he doesn't keep his speed when you exit a glide and well he doesn't Superstars so he said "yeah nah no Knuckles". So to say that that doesn't happens in the old games is just silly and dumb and wrong.

I was expecting the review to be horrendous based on what you said, but I would argue that your review of their review is even worse. So, in a controversial move, I will run defense for IGN.
    "Sonic is Slow Now???"
While this is probably one of the weakest parts of their review, there are some legs to stand on here, with the introduction of Emerald powers that sometimes focuses more on exploration and combat, the use of some of them does slow the game down quite a bit.
    "Level Gimmicks"
While you have a point with the fog vision gimmick not working well with multiplayer, you seem to focus on its very mention when the reviewer was simply listing examples. Similarly, the fact that your only criticism of Lagoon City seems to be that it "doesn't stand out" while the reviewer points out the ways it does stand out (pointing to the unique use of the water emerald power and music), you just seem to take issue with the fact that it was positively mentioned at all.
    "Failure to Understand Sonic"
While this is probably the worst part of their review, I'd still argue that there's valuable information to obtain from it. Their main criticism seems to be that the lower paths tend to encourage exploration, while the actual reward for exploration doesn't tend to measure up the effort spent, while the effort spent on the top path is more worth it despite the fact that it discourages exploration. This is certainly some shaky logic, but it's a fair criticism of the design of classic sonic. The reviewer even acknowledges that the top path is more for speed, so it's not like they don't understand this aspect of the gameplay.
    "Doesn't Know About Dropdash"
Other characters have abilities to reach areas that cannot easily be reached, while Sonic's drop dash is more focused on the maintenance of speed. While I could understand how you could misinterpret that as the reviewer not knowing about the drop dash, it seems clear to me that the reviewer was pointing out that sonic lacks those extra navigation abilities, and how the bullet ability was more helpful in navigation when playing as Sonic (which is true). You pointing out that the drop dash is more helpful in boss fights shows that you don't even understand what the reviewer is trying to say.
Regarding the bosses, you talk about how easy the bosses are, then in the next breath talk about how tense the boss fights are due to their extended runtime. While I understand the difference between difficulty and tenseness, they are often related to each other, and I wouldn't blame anyone for conflating the two, which the reviewer seems to do. The preference for the length of the boss fights seems to be a matter of taste more than anything else, so I'm not going to argue against your preference for longer boss fights, even if I disagree.
    "Admits To Being Bad LOL"
Motherfucker the reviewer literally said "I liked the Fang Boss Fights until they started dragging on and on." You talk for ages about how the first boss fight is easy and the fights only got bad when they started taking too long and had some unfair attacks. You're just agreeing with the reviewer LMAO. (Don' take the wording too seriously I'm just being a bully)
    "Superstars PHENOMENAL Soundtrack"
No accounting for taste. Can't say much for or against your point.
    "Completely Wrong About Camera"
The reviewer mentioned an instance where the camera should have followed Sonic (who was likely going forward), but instead focused on Knuckles who was climbing a wall somewhere. You didn't really acknowledge what the reviewer said and instead claimed that the reviewer was lying about playing with a coop partner. This is such a strange claim, why would you say something that you can't even prove. Based on what I've seen some other people say, it's not as simple as what you say it is.
"We won't forgive IGN for this one"
Not much to say here, pretty sad to see such major spoilers. You didn't really engage with what the reviewer said but that's fine since this section was more about the spoilers.
    "Battle Mode"
You CANNOT use "well I had fun when playing with my friends" as a legitimate point, because every game in existence is fun when you play with your friends. All you said was that every minigame was fun and unique.
    "Wrong About Bonus Levels"
Can't say much for the repeating thing, maybe the reviewer got unlucky, or you got super lucky, or you maybe didn't go into as many as the reviewer did or maybe the reviewer meant repeat in a different way. The reviewer never said the levels weren't fun, just that they slowed down the pace of the level, which is more of a preference thing, but still a valid opinion to have.
    "Sound Design"
More of a preference thing than anything else. If you didn't find the sound design annoying then it's whatever, but as long as you don't pretend like it's an unfounded criticism, there was little to no actual disagreement here.
    "Other Ones Have Better Multiplayer"
While Superstars is likely the first Sonic game that has had this involved of a cooperative multiplayer experience, many Sonic games have had multiplayers options. Acting like playing as Tails in Sonic 2 has been the only time multiplayer has been present in Sonic games is so odd that I have to wonder if you have a different definition of multiplayer. The only explanation I could think of is if you think that competitive multiplayer doesn't actually count as multiplayer, but even in the case of cooperative multiplayer Sonic 4 Episode 2 had it present as well, so I can't comprehend what you could possibly mean by this.
At the very end you mention how the reviewer "seemingly (didn't) understand going fast in a Sonic game, like it's Sonic, that's like--the Flash makes a game, and you're like 'ugh, they're really moving quick with this guy huh?'"
I think this is pretty indicative of the way you tackled the review; you heard what you wanted to hear and that was that. The reviewer never even said that the game was too fast.
Much love! I still enjoy your content and I'll always stop by every now and then to hear what you have to say!

Reasoning aside, a 7/10 does feel incredibly fitting all the same for this experience.
I don't blame you for attacking the reasoning for their review score. However, knowing how the average person looks at IGN ratings, the journalistic content that leads to the score they give really (sadly) ultimately is completely inconsequential. The 'reader' sees the score, and that's all that matters, and maybe a handful of points they chose to bold and put in the summary. Think about it, can you really tell me what the author thought of Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby beyond the fact that it had "too much water"? Of course not, because even if you did read the review (which again, you probably didn't if you're a typical IGN "reader"), none of that content sticks with you, it's the ultimate score and perhaps those bullet points in their summary that actually sticks with the average person consulting these reviews.

Sonic 2, SA2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic 06 and now Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit have any DIRECT competition.

about the bosses part, i've 100% EVERY SINGLE SONIC GAME and i struggled on the bosses in this game lol, you might have just gotten lucky or you didnt play trip's story
EDIT: the water level is NOT bad at all lol, again with my sonic knowledge it was a surprisingly solid and streamlined level
EDIT 2: another bad take on your end... levels and bosses are absolutely the longest and it can harm the enjoyment of the game, i personally didn't mind since i always love more sonic but pretty much EVERY level overstayed it's welcome. it's hard not to beat a level 9 minutes in or more
EDIT 3: ...the camera system is glitched, it's not the furthest ahead person ALL of the tie

6:36... yeah? Like... what? Any true classic Sonic fan knows this, how could she not? That's the point, that's what was attempted in Sonic 1, but really only Green Hill was capable of pulling off, while subsequent Sonic games put emphasis on that, especially 2. You take a higher route, more rewards, it's a bit faster, you take the bottom route, more treacherous, you try to go more so in the middle, maintain the straight and narrow, with a few upper platforms, then it's better for speed running. That's what made Sonic stand out from every other platformer ever, it's not his speed, that was just Sega's selling point, hit motif, that gameplay can be faster than Mario, Mega Man, etc, however he's just as much of a platformer as those other... well platforming icons. You get more rewards from exploration, now I can't say for certain if Superstars does this, I don't have the game yet, but if that's what it's doing... sounds about right to me.
In fact BOTH SONIC SEQUELS EMPHASIZED THIS, CD is slower than 2, more emphasis on evolving 1's exploration, but you could still go fast if you know the right routes, and the peel out was meant to give that emphasis on speed since very few times would you, especially when you're playing the game for the 1st few times, not going to be good enough to feel the speed. Both handled it differently, but excel at both being fast and exploration. Sonic has always been about exploration, Mario wouldn't really tap into that until Mario World, warp pipes and whistles from 1-3 only help you progress, they're not explorative, just time saving. Even... still doesn't to the level of even Sonic 1. Mega Man X put emphasis on exploration, but it released same year as Sonic 2 and CD, AND... still doesn't do it to the same degree, still just 1 route, power ups are just out of the way on dead end routes.

He literally explained it in the video. IGN is a household name and, whether we like it or not, is the most influential game reviewer out there.
As such, reviews like this that don't understand anything about what the game it's reviewing is based around, nor anything to do with the core gameplay loop is really bad. It puts people off who may not realise that most of the people in IGN don't understand half the games they review and ultimately hurt a game that, by all means, is a solid title. Stuff like this stops people from buying, and unfortunately, big companies look at the profits. If Sonic Superstars doesn't sell as well as they predicted, they likely won't ever try anything like it again. They likely won't ever expand and improve upon the concepts introduced in this game because of that.
We shouldn't just ignore things like this because it ultimately harms games that are decent and scares companies away from pursuing that formula further.

I disagree on this being the best way to do sonic multiplayer. Sonic advance 3 has the best co-op of the series.
GBA game, played on two separate GBAs, each player gets their own screen, and they are free to traverse the stage however they want, and you can hold R to summon your partner to you and use a team move.
only issues are that you can't get emeralds when playing in co-op, and either player dying means you both restart from checkpoint.

I stopped following IGN Reviews when they gave Alien: Isolation a 4 or 5 and one of the complaints was that “guns don’t do anything in the game, cause you can’t harm the Alien” - 🙄 yeah no sh!t, the game was meant to be a Survival Horror Experience in First Person (Emphasis on SURVIVAL!!)
It was never ever touted to be a Shooter - Despite having a couple shooter heavy sections after the mid mark…
That review was SO absurd and sure the game wasn’t perfect, but it IS the very best usage of the Alien Franchise, and yeah there are portions of shooting…
Another complaint was “I kept dying hiding in the same locker! After staying in the locker for 30 mins!! Waaah 😭!!”
When again, it was told that the Alien’s AI would adapt to your strategy’s if used too often…
Alien: Isolation is meant to be played with you constantly moving and getting to the next objective while outsmarting the Alien…
I’ve never played Isolation under Hard Difficulty and still think the game was pretty damn solid, dread inducing and having a cool story and beautiful Art design.
IGN Sucks and has always sucked, I’ve ignored them completely since Alien: Isolation…
I typically follow Gameranx now, as they don’t do Number Reviews and are always fair with reviews based on the type of game they’re talking about.
As a Major Old-School-Side-Scrolling-Sonic game fan, I am definitely picking Superstars at some point…
Also Spoiling the last boss?? I’m so glad I don’t follow them… and they may not realize it but what they say matters to lots of gamers and their reviews I feel determines if a game will succeed well or not…

I love classic Sonic. But I'd give Superstars a 6.5/10. The controls feel great. The visuals look nice. But the level design is kind of a mixed bag. Also 60$ and it shorter than mania?! Also I don't think coming out the same week as Mario Wonder did it any favors.
