Its obvious that Sonic Team took huge inspiration from Dragon Ball. Sonic 1 had 6 emeralds and went to 7 in Sonic 2 due to them adding Super Saiyan The Knuckles Tribe didn't protect the Emeralds though, they tried to take it and the Master Emerald from Chaos. The comparison between Gero and Eggman doesn't make sense since Eggman was introduced before the Android Saga started. Trunks and Silver are very obvious, iirc theres character notes from Sonic 06 that say he's basically Trunks. As for stuff Dragon Ball copied from Sonic, Goku Black and Mephiles comes to mind. He looks exactly like a protagonist by stealing their form (Mephilies copies Shadow's shadow and Zamasu takes Goku's body). He comes from a future timeline and is the reason (Trunks/Silver) comes back to the past, and ends up merging with someone that's technically himself (Zamasu with himself, Mephiles with Iblis who used to be the same being, Solaris) and they both couldn't be beaten since they were immortal so they had to be wiped (Zeno for Zamasu, and Elise removed Solaris from existence)

My little brother also found his love for Sonic through Sonic X and I found the Dragon Ball franchise on an anime journey. Me and my brothers really love both. I always noticed how these 2 franchises had similarities but there were some I actually never noticed! Great vid.
You have to watch more shonen anime other than Dragon Ball. Yes the chaos emeralds and Super formation is there and yes Silver and Trunks is similar(even the japanese sonic 06 website said in silver's profile that its just like Trunks) but that's about it. Shadow is a lot different from Vegita and the writer from SA2 took inspiration from the 1995 Ghost in the Shell anime,Nausica and the second urusei yatsura movie. Shadow was created while Vegita is not. Shadow is more mission focused while Vegita is more power hungry and is obsessed to defeat Goku until the end when he just accepts that he is weaker. I can't understand how Chaos and Cell is even similar. Chaos was the guardian of the Master Emerald and the chaos emeralds in general. Also was a chao before Knuckles tribe's selfish behavior and killed them all. Eggman resurrects him but lose control and chaos goes berserk until super sonic stops him. While Cell organize a fighting tournament to see who is the strongest worthy opponent for his own entertainment. Sonic took a lot of inspirations from pop cultures and movies like everyone else. Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball is based on a japanese folklore.
Great job with the video! 😀 A similarity I found is with The Super Chaos Emeralds and Super Dragon Balls. The Super Chaos Emeralds, in this case came before the Super Dragon Balls in 1994. They can be used to transform Sonic into Hyper Sonic by powering up the Master Emerald. I think Dragon Ball Super took inspiration from both the emeralds and the hyper form (with UI), though Goku achieves it in the TOP after his training instead of The Super Dragon Balls giving him this form.

The funny thing about Shadow being Silver's father is that in the Sonic and the Black Knight game, it could actually be a thing. In that game Shadow's knight character name was referred to as Sir Lancelot. And Silver's knight character name is Sir Galahad. For those of you who don't know, the arthurian legend Sir Lancelot has an illegitimate son. His name was Sir Galahad 😂
Something to note is that Ultra Instinct was POSSIBLY inspired by Sonic's Ultra form in the Archie Comics as well as his Hyper form. Sonic's ultra form doesn't change his appearance much and is the result of Sonic absorbing the power of 1 Super Emerald and Sonic's Hyper form changes his hair/fur/wtv to white (or has it flash through multiple colors but it's generally depicted as just being white) and is the result of absorbing the power of all 7 Super Emeralds. You can think of Ultra Sonic as a sort of incomplete version Hyper Sonic which is the M A S T E R E D version of Ultra Sonic. See the comparison?

For anyone who wants it all summarized then here we go Sonic the hedgehog did have multiple influences and references to dragon ball Z such as knuckles and piccolo being tribe-like civilizations who started as a villain but ended up befriending the MC. And tails and Bulma being extremely smart but very weak. Shadow and vegeta being the same race as the Max but no of them are highly full of themselves. And then super sonic taking direct influence from super Saiyan. But in their similarity’s both are entirely unique and different in many ways. Dragon ball has impacted anime/cartoons for decades and because others take inspiration dose not mean they out right copied it
I do think your short just seemed a little bit antagonistic with the character without the glasses directly calling Sonic a copy of DBZ. I do think most of the comparisons are extreme stretches, which is why I usually also bring up stuff like the Death Egg being an obvious spoof on the Death Star, and a Sonic toy having a pose identical to one that Felix the Cat does. I will say that one comparison that people always get wrong is Hyper Sonic and Ultra Instinct Goku. Hyper Sonic first appeared in 1994 in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, meanwhile, Ultra Instinct Goku only appeared in 2015 in a movie. And even the comparison itself is very much baseless since I'm pretty sure that the white hair only was a thing in the movie, but even then, Hyper Sonic doesn't have instinctive fighting skills and is more of an evolution of Super Sonic. I think this misconception comes from someone at SEGA one time answering a question from a fan about why Hyper Sonic hasn't returned, and he responded that they didn't want Sonic to be too much like DBZ, which I believe most Sonic fans took out of context, believing they were commenting on Hyper Sonic's white fur instead of the horrible rabbit hole of power creep.

I enjoyed this, i’ve been enjoying your RUclips shorts for awhile and to see you do long videos was exciting. I find it very interesting and awesome both sonic and Dragonball have so many similarities, I see it more as a positive thing other than a negative.
One possible other inspiration is that the werehog functions like the oozaru (great ape) where sonic becomes a beast at night time only he has control over it so its almost like super saiyan 4

Gave all of these “copied characters” their own backstories and storylines. Maybe the concepts are similar, but the execution is far different

At first there were only 6 chaos Emeralds. After Sonic 2 they added a 7th with SuperSonic which was inspired by DBZ at the time. But basically thats it other similarities are just coincidential.
Sonic and Dragon Ball are huge points of my childhood and still are, and obviously there is similar points, 7 emeralds, pointy main character hair, super form, another white haired form as their final form, rivals that are the same alien-like race, they turn into a full primal form based on their race that awaken from the full moon, future characters that are the same race as the main mc, with that being said both companies are friendly with each other and take inspiration. I've found alot of similarities in which sonic inspired in db later in. (But first, for sonic, you forget the where hog and great ape or ssj4, moon..stuff..beast..) Also, I always thought of tails as bulma. So we go into ssjg and ssjb. While not to the show, it was a big 3 of in the community with sonic, mario, and goku. Sonic and Mario stuff featured a red haired form with a fire aura, fire sonic which was popular, and then a blue one which was ice sonic with a more cool aura.. Now we have god and blue. Notice goku black. Goku blacks very appearance is in contrast to goku, voice and all... knuckles is in contrast to sonic, and now we have knuckles being pink in his super, and rose goku black. We have the pride troopers, I could include Kass and that purple haired girl being Rouge and Tails, but let's go with the big 3. Jiren is Shadow, Sonic is Dyspo, Knuckles is toppo. Knuckles is known for physical strength, that happens to be toppos thing as well, who despite this, is outdone by shadow, jiren. Jiren, like shadow, host power that exceeds their groups, and had similar issues characterwise. Dyspo and sonic, do I even have to? Fastest thing alive, fastest in the multiverse, cocky asf, smart mouth, lightspeed mode... We have hyper sonic and later comes mui. We have black freiza. Looks like a humanoid being with a tail went black with indigoish energy now...wait, Darksuper sonic. Sonic in generations forces his way though time effortlessly. Goku does the same thing with hit, only he struggles. Ik, db heroes, hearts gave me infinite vibes, especially with thoses cubes. Regardless, love both animes, they both remain top of my list
The only things that I actually agree with you is Oozaru and Werehog form. Werehog came way after Dragon Ball. I also agree on the Hyper form and MUI, but the others were a far stretch. Shadow is Vegeta as they're both are from the same race as the protagonist, Tails is Krillin as they're best buds, and Knuckles is basically Picollo as they were enemies at first then became friends. If anything that you're saying is true about the Pride Troopers, then there basically following the same formula as they did from the start.

They ended up getting so power hungry that they ended up getting killed by Chaos, and in that note, Chaos was the descendant of the Ancient Ones in Frontiers, Eggman said they share the same DNA, and the Chaos Energy must’ve mutated the ancient ones into Chao, and in Sonic Adventure, the Master Emerald reversed the effect of the mutation, which is why we have Chaos 3rd: Knuckles has nothing other than he was a rival to sonic and he was based on tribal communities, he protects the Master Emerald to continue the legacy of his Tribe, that is now extinct, Piccilo isn’t the last Namekian or however you spell it lol, plus, knuckles can control the power of the Chaos Emeralds since he has a connection to them, I don’t Piccilo has a 6th sense which tells him where the emeralds are 4rth: Eggman has nothing similar to Dr Gero, other than they’re smart, and have a moustache, also DBZ didn’t create villains wanting to take over the world. Tails also has no similarities with Krillin, tails is literally the second smartest character in the franchise, Krillin is just a weak sidekick 5th: Shadow and Vegeta have no similarities, Vegeta is the prince of Saiyans, while Shadow was a life form made to withstand the power of the Chaos Emeralds, they also have different motives in their rivalry with the MC, Shadow says many times how he wanted to kill So if, and is more of a anti hero, while Vegeta just has a skill issue and wants to be stronger than Goku, and stays a hero throughout DBZ 6th: the Super Forms in both franchises has only 2 similarities, 1, hair or fur color changes, and 2, they get stronger. Goku has many different forms of Super Sayin, while sonic has only 1, Hyper Sonic and Super Sonic 2 and Cyber Sonic doesn’t count since 2 of them use the power of Cyber and Chaos energy combined, while 1 uses a completely different power source from the Chaos Emeralds, and that’s the Super Emeralds, and last time I checked, the Dragon Balls don’t have a super form

These comparisons are fun to spot and point out but copying is such a strong word and it definitely doesn't apply. It's clear that Sonic took some inspiration from DragonBall but we gotta remember that these similarities are just surface-level, go beneath the surface and it becomes much harder to make these comparisons. Beyond the rival and super shadow and super saiyajin thing and just being edgy Shadow and Vegeta don't really have much in common, beyond being from a destroyed future and being a hedgehog and able to go super Silver and Trunks don't have much in common, beyond needing things to achieve its perfect form and wanting to destroy the planet Cell and Chaos have nothing in common, Beyond being a kindof weaker sidekick character Tails and Krillin are nothing alike I mean if anything comparing Tails to Bulma is probably a stronger comparison what with them both being the primary tech provider for Team Sonic and the Z-Fighters respectively.
Amy and ChiChi is one I've seen thrown around on the internet. And Silver being the son or descendant of Shadow is, iirc, spawned from the comparison of Sonic and Dragonball. In this Theory however it is also suspected that Silver's related to Amy too, due to his telekinesis and Amy's Psychic abilities

Dragon ball super has a few things they possibly took from sonic. Like the obvious one is ui gokus design is pretty close to ultra sonic and so is ssgod to burning blaze. My favorite: goku black is really simular to mephiles in character
What mephiles and goku black has in common: both gods who took the form of one of the main characters, both travels through time to achive their goals and gains power/forms with the help of the 7 mythical objects to destroy everything, while a time traveler goes back to the past to save their timeline
My favorite comparisons between these 2 franchises has got to be the Super sayian and Supersonic comparison. I remember back in the day seeing Goku go ssj for the first time and was blown away by how awesome it was, and when I watched Sonic x also back then , (specifically the one where he fights perfect chaos) I was also blown away by his transformation as well because it reminded me of Goku. So seeing that Sonic could go super as well was a double bonus!

The points of them being the same race as the protagonist and being able to achieve super forms is correct. Shadow fought Sonic to avenge Maria, while Vegeta fought Goku mainly because he wanted to be the legendary super saiyan.
Nah hyper isnt white, its like a rainbow color, and doesnt act like mui, the white color is completely fanmade, since white has every color in it it makes white a easy representation of the form
About the super transformation, to activate the form in the sonic universe, you need to have a strong emotion as said in Sonic adventure. A bit simmilar as rage is a emotion also.
A thing that I don’t hear anyone mention is that there were originally 6 chaos emeralds in Sonic 1 but then changed to 7 in Sonic 2, so I don’t think the emeralds heavily copied from the dragon balls.

Sonic and Dragon Ball are some of the peakest stuff out there. I think both are awesome but i do prefer Sonic because he's fast and that's cool. If it came down to a fight between Goku and Sonic, i 100% say it's a draw, and if you say "NoOoO sOnIc WiNs." or "nOoOo GoKu SoLoS." just shut up, if a draw doesn't make you happy, then just piss off you're no fun.
Funny thing is that the creator of Sonic did take the super Saiyan transformation and gave it to Sonic as paying respect of a pop culture icon but if you pay enough attention dragon ball took ultra instinct from Sonic Archie as well so think of it as both series have respect for one another and can make connections like this to have a bit of fun
Chaos in the sense of needing all 7 Chaos Emeralds, is closer to Omega Shenron from GT, who needed to get his "Perfect" Form from all 7 Dragon Balls, and then has the goal of destroying Earth.
This situation is interesting because people love both shows and try to protect them no matter what. tbh I love both shows but l loved dragonball more because it lasted longer because it had 3 different series Dragonball, Dragonball z and dragonball super.
if I remember correctly i read somewhere that the guy who made sonic was a Dragon ball fan and loved the Super Saiyan transformation and wanted sonic to do something similar.
copy is kind of a stretch and is far too strong a verb for this, so i'd say take inspiration due to Sega and Akira Torimiya to have worked on similar projects in the past and have grown a strong bond.

As for stuff Dragon Ball copied from Sonic, Goku Black and Mephiles comes to mind. He looks exactly like a protagonist by stealing their form (Mephilies copies Shadow's shadow and Zamasu takes Goku's body). He comes from a future timeline and is the reason (Trunks/Silver) comes back to the past, and ends up merging with someone that's technically himself (Zamasu with himself, Mephiles with Iblis who used to be the same being, Solaris) and they both couldn't be beaten since they were immortal so they had to be wiped (Zeno for Zamasu, and Elise removed Solaris from existence)

Shadow is a lot different from Vegita and the writer from SA2 took inspiration from the 1995 Ghost in the Shell anime,Nausica and the second urusei yatsura movie. Shadow was created while Vegita is not. Shadow is more mission focused while Vegita is more power hungry and is obsessed to defeat Goku until the end when he just accepts that he is weaker. I can't understand how Chaos and Cell is even similar. Chaos was the guardian of the Master Emerald and the chaos emeralds in general. Also was a chao before Knuckles tribe's selfish behavior and killed them all. Eggman resurrects him but lose control and chaos goes berserk until super sonic stops him. While Cell organize a fighting tournament to see who is the strongest worthy opponent for his own entertainment.

A similarity I found is with The Super Chaos Emeralds and Super Dragon Balls.
The Super Chaos Emeralds, in this case came before the Super Dragon Balls in 1994.
They can be used to transform Sonic into Hyper Sonic by powering up the Master Emerald.
I think Dragon Ball Super took inspiration from both the emeralds and the hyper form (with UI), though Goku achieves it in the TOP after his training instead of The Super Dragon Balls giving him this form.

Something to note is that Ultra Instinct was POSSIBLY inspired by Sonic's Ultra form in the Archie Comics as well as his Hyper form. Sonic's ultra form doesn't change his appearance much and is the result of Sonic absorbing the power of 1 Super Emerald and Sonic's Hyper form changes his hair/fur/wtv to white (or has it flash through multiple colors but it's generally depicted as just being white) and is the result of absorbing the power of all 7 Super Emeralds.
You can think of Ultra Sonic as a sort of incomplete version Hyper Sonic which is the M A S T E R E D version of Ultra Sonic. See the comparison?

Sonic the hedgehog did have multiple influences and references to dragon ball Z such as knuckles and piccolo being tribe-like civilizations who started as a villain but ended up befriending the MC. And tails and Bulma being extremely smart but very weak. Shadow and vegeta being the same race as the Max but no of them are highly full of themselves. And then super sonic taking direct influence from super Saiyan. But in their similarity’s both are entirely unique and different in many ways. Dragon ball has impacted anime/cartoons for decades and because others take inspiration dose not mean they out right copied it

I do think your short just seemed a little bit antagonistic with the character without the glasses directly calling Sonic a copy of DBZ. I do think most of the comparisons are extreme stretches, which is why I usually also bring up stuff like the Death Egg being an obvious spoof on the Death Star, and a Sonic toy having a pose identical to one that Felix the Cat does. I will say that one comparison that people always get wrong is Hyper Sonic and Ultra Instinct Goku. Hyper Sonic first appeared in 1994 in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, meanwhile, Ultra Instinct Goku only appeared in 2015 in a movie. And even the comparison itself is very much baseless since I'm pretty sure that the white hair only was a thing in the movie, but even then, Hyper Sonic doesn't have instinctive fighting skills and is more of an evolution of Super Sonic. I think this misconception comes from someone at SEGA one time answering a question from a fan about why Hyper Sonic hasn't returned, and he responded that they didn't want Sonic to be too much like DBZ, which I believe most Sonic fans took out of context, believing they were commenting on Hyper Sonic's white fur instead of the horrible rabbit hole of power creep.

Sonic and Dragon Ball are huge points of my childhood and still are, and obviously there is similar points, 7 emeralds, pointy main character hair, super form, another white haired form as their final form, rivals that are the same alien-like race, they turn into a full primal form based on their race that awaken from the full moon, future characters that are the same race as the main mc, with that being said both companies are friendly with each other and take inspiration. The only things that I actually agree with you is Oozaru and Werehog form. Werehog came way after Dragon Ball. I also agree on the Hyper form and MUI, but the others were a far stretch. Shadow is Vegeta as they're both are from the same race as the protagonist, Tails is Krillin as they're best buds, and Knuckles is basically Picollo as they were enemies at first then became friends. If anything that you're saying is true about the Pride Troopers, then there basically following the same formula as they did from the start.
1st: DBZ didn’t create 7 collectibles
2nd: The Echidnas didn’t protect the emeralds, they wanted to control its power. They ended up getting so power hungry that they ended up getting killed by Chaos, and in that note, Chaos was the descendant of the Ancient Ones in Frontiers, Eggman said they share the same DNA, and the Chaos Energy must’ve mutated the ancient ones into Chao, and in Sonic Adventure, the Master Emerald reversed the effect of the mutation, which is why we have Chaos
3rd: Knuckles has nothing other than he was a rival to sonic and he was based on tribal communities, he protects the Master Emerald to continue the legacy of his Tribe, that is now extinct, Piccilo isn’t the last Namekian or however you spell it lol, plus, knuckles can control the power of the Chaos Emeralds since he has a connection to them, I don’t Piccilo has a 6th sense which tells him where the emeralds are
4rth: Eggman has nothing similar to Dr Gero, other than they’re smart, and have a moustache, also DBZ didn’t create villains wanting to take over the world. Tails also has no similarities with Krillin, tails is literally the second smartest character in the franchise, Krillin is just a weak sidekick
5th: Shadow and Vegeta have no similarities, Vegeta is the prince of Saiyans, while Shadow was a life form made to withstand the power of the Chaos Emeralds, they also have different motives in their rivalry with the MC, Shadow says many times how he wanted to kill So if, and is more of a anti hero, while Vegeta just has a skill issue and wants to be stronger than Goku, and stays a hero throughout DBZ
6th: the Super Forms in both franchises has only 2 similarities, 1, hair or fur color changes, and 2, they get stronger. Goku has many different forms of Super Sayin, while sonic has only 1, Hyper Sonic and Super Sonic 2 and Cyber Sonic doesn’t count since 2 of them use the power of Cyber and Chaos energy combined, while 1 uses a completely different power source from the Chaos Emeralds, and that’s the Super Emeralds, and last time I checked, the Dragon Balls don’t have a super form

These comparisons are fun to spot and point out but copying is such a strong word and it definitely doesn't apply. It's clear that Sonic took some inspiration from DragonBall but we gotta remember that these similarities are just surface-level, go beneath the surface and it becomes much harder to make these comparisons. Beyond the rival and super shadow and super saiyajin thing and just being edgy Shadow and Vegeta don't really have much in common, beyond being from a destroyed future and being a hedgehog and able to go super Silver and Trunks don't have much in common, beyond needing things to achieve its perfect form and wanting to destroy the planet Cell and Chaos have nothing in common, Beyond being a kindof weaker sidekick character Tails and Krillin are nothing alike I mean if anything comparing Tails to Bulma is probably a stronger comparison what with them both being the primary tech provider for Team Sonic and the Z-Fighters respectively.

Thats just not the case I know your trying to exaggerate it but the Sonic franchise as a whole is not just dragon ball z which hedgehogs. I know of all of the similarities but I can list you way more differences than similarities
Dragon ball super has a few things they possibly took from sonic. Like the obvious one is ui gokus design is pretty close to ultra sonic and so is ssgod to burning blaze. My favorite: goku black is really simular to mephiles in character
What mephiles and goku black has in common: both gods who took the form of one of the main characters, both travels through time to achive their goals and gains power/forms with the help of the 7 mythical objects to destroy everything, while a time traveler goes back to the past to save their timeline
My favorite comparisons between these 2 franchises has got to be the Super sayian and Supersonic comparison.
I remember back in the day seeing Goku go ssj for the first time and was blown away by how awesome it was, and when I watched Sonic x also back then , (specifically the one where he fights perfect chaos) I was also blown away by his transformation as well because it reminded me of Goku. So seeing that Sonic could go super as well was a double bonus!
Yuji Naka was a huge dragon ball fan, so he created super sonic which is an inspiration of super saiyan

About the super transformation, to activate the form in the sonic universe, you need to have a strong emotion as said in Sonic adventure. A bit simmilar as rage is a emotion also.

A thing that I don’t hear anyone mention is that there were originally 6 chaos emeralds in Sonic 1 but then changed to 7 in Sonic 2, so I don’t think the emeralds heavily copied from the dragon balls.

Sonic and Dragon Ball are some of the peakest stuff out there. I think both are awesome but i do prefer Sonic because he's fast and that's cool. If it came down to a fight between Goku and Sonic, i 100% say it's a draw, and if you say "NoOoO sOnIc WiNs." or "nOoOo GoKu SoLoS." just shut up, if a draw doesn't make you happy, then just piss off you're no fun.
Funny thing is that the creator of Sonic did take the super Saiyan transformation and gave it to Sonic as paying respect of a pop culture icon but if you pay enough attention dragon ball took ultra instinct from Sonic Archie as well so think of it as both series have respect for one another and can make connections like this to have a bit of fun

This situation is interesting because people love both shows and try to protect them no matter what. tbh I love both shows but l loved dragonball more because it lasted longer because it had 3 different series Dragonball, Dragonball z and dragonball super.
if I remember correctly i read somewhere that the guy who made sonic was a Dragon ball fan and loved the Super Saiyan transformation and wanted sonic to do something similar.
copy is kind of a stretch and is far too strong a verb for this, so i'd say take inspiration due to Sega and Akira Torimiya to have worked on similar projects in the past and have grown a strong bond.
