This is the only video/online source I've seen that has actually helped me reduce the complexity of .STL files. Great job and thank you for helping!
Awesome to hear 👍Thank you for watching
I had the same error!! Thanks for solve it!! Greetings from Colombia!
This is useful. It helps me see more of how these models are made and the steps necessary to modify. I'd like to do two things with my 3D printer. 1) Find an STL of a 1967-72 Ford F100 and imagine that Ford made a Bronco that year based on a full size truck. This helps.. and 2) Take the STL for the Barry Solo finger pen and modify it to accept 4 pen modules of a Bic 4-color pen, complete with click mechanisms.
Hi Lars - Great daily videos BTW... I managed to reduce the faces .. Instead of trying to select with a window, I selected the mesh from the left hand menu "Mesh/Body" and it worked..
Got it! I'll have to try that. Thank you for watching!
Nov 2017 and Fusion360 has the same problems with high poly count models. It's not your fault dear Lars. It's just that Autodesk hasn't quite "got there" with a few features. There was no user error! You have awesome videos.
Thank you Royce Barber
As someone else said the last couple attempts worked. Keep your eye on the mesh and you will see it change. Dont worry Lars I commend you for doing this stuff live, we are both learning the whole mesh thing lol. Now CAM we can do! Haha - Jacob S.
BTW obvisouly the majority of the people who follow your videos really enjoy them because even though it didnt work you still have 60 thumbs up amd only 2 down (as of right now) so thats awesome. - Jacob S.
Thank you Jacob S.
Yes, I am very lucky that you guys are so patience when things not always works the way it was planned.
Lars, I love you man! good try! Trying the same stuff yesterday... finally ended up in MM! F360 is awesome program, just not so much in the mesh arena!,
Thank you Jeff Edwards
@Lars hi, where do we find the plane cut function in the new fusion 360? it's no longer in the 'modify'.. thks!
Glad to know you are Human! good stream
Hi Charlie Didio Thank you for watching!
No super hero cape for me on this one lol
Have an awesome day
Maybe, just maybe, you should make a blooper compilation ;-). This one would fit in nicely. Just kidding. You did great as usual. I would be foaming after 10 minutes.
Ha, love that idea.
Have an awesome day Rudi!
Any other software we can use to get solid without compromising the details ?
Very interesting Lars as I didn't realise you could alter an stl file in fusion that's awesome.... I was curious regarding orthopaedic solutions or leg braces now that would be a cool tutorial importing an stl (someones leg) then creating a mechanical 3d printable brace simple design but how do you create a face or mirror the stl face to create another body.. or do you create a body then subtract the stl from that to give you a starting point... anyway just an idea as my father inlaw is having a full knee reconstruction in September maybe I could give it a go.. all the best cheers TJ
Hi Tj Kirkpatrick Thank you for watching!
Check out this great video by jamie scherer

Thankyou Lars you are the man...!!! that is arguably exactly the info I was chasing thanks heaps I will be keen to test out these functions, as they are obviously new to me.. Thanks once again cheers TJ
LAAAAAAAAAAAAARS!!
I just wanted to go 2 years back in this and tell you click on left and select body instead of the window selection... lol
sums up fusion 360, unhelpful error warnings. Glad its not just me lol
Ha, You know that if I did it again off camera it would work :-)
I wouldn't mind seeing this topic again, but done with an stl model that needs some modifications done to it... Converting / modifying / converting back for print.
I am ready for that. Do you have a model or an idea of a part?
Lars Christensen Lars, I wish I had something specific. I'm remembering all the times I've seen a model and thought that it would almost work for me if an angle was different, a channel was wider, the holes had different spacing, etc. Any manipulation of a model similar to www.thingiverse.com/thing:2583832 would be helpful to me. I'm hopefully going to be printing the second and final version of my first model from scratch tonight and am enjoying your tutorials. Thank you.
hey Lars, what about editing STEP files? I just recently got a STEP file from a company producing parts for me. As it happens I need to modify the parts like getting rid of cut outs, changing champers and so on. I hope this is possible as well. I'd love to see a live stream of this topic ;) thx in advance
Hi lapistano Thank you for watching!
Take a look at some of the direct editing tools in Fusion:

Best,
Lars
I seem to recall having to repair a mesh first before I could reduce the last time I did it.
I think you are totally right. Reading your comment I regret not trying that
Hi Lars, maybe the stl was broken try to fix it in NetFab. I also use the browser menu to select the mesh body and then to reduce it. After that I have to make sure that history is switched of before mesh to solid.
Thank you 3D Gussner Yes, I need to figure out what I did wrong here. I did it the night before, so it is clearly on me
Thanks cutie Lars
You are so very welcome :-) Thank you for watching!
I found that you have to rotate the model to different sides and select facets that didn't get selected the first time. Only the facets that are in view get selected.
Hi enginebill Thank you for watching!
Yes, I need to do some research this weekend :-)
make sure the select thru is clicked.
I was under the impression the max facet count was ten thousand but clearly I am mistaken, there is a model I have been trying to do for a while and have read through the comments and think I might be able to do now. Do you know what the max facet count is?
Hi Popcorn Shiner Thank you for watching!
I found this on the knowledge base
NOTE: Fusion 360 works best when converting meshes with less than 10,000 facets. If your mesh body contains more than 10,000 facets, it is possible the conversion process will fail or errors will occur. The Modify > Reduce and Modify > Remesh tools in the Mesh workspace can be used to reduce the count of mesh facets to promote a healthy conversion to b-rep.
and you also said it's not gonna work but you could see it changed the facet already...
I think a few times you didn't spot that the reduce had actually worked.
Hi Lars ji, Like most of 3D softwares Fusion 360 also works on principles of 3 axial planes n geometrical projections.
Can ur software give me a solid model based on given point co'ordinates in XYZ axis..?
Not sure I totally understand. You can't just feed a punch of XYZ coordinates into the software and have geometry created if that is what you are asking.
Have a great day
Lars Christensen Then in view of this defficiency How can u justify the software name as Fusion 360° ♤ n that not encompassing my requirement?
Mine has about 2 million facets and I got it to convert to solid :)
how?
@@ryanneal1734 He borrowed NASA's PC.
Hello Lars, I have just been following your videos and wanted to contact you. I really appreciate your videos.....great stuff by the way. I have been using Fusion 360 now for the past three years and am a retired industrial designer. A great piece of software to be sure. The question I have for you concerns a project that I would like to build. I want to make a large model of the Planet Express ship from the TV show Futurama. So the question is this...is it possible to model two profiles to create one 3D shape? One profile would be laid horizontally and the other profile would be perpendicular to the first shape and intersecting it at the same time. I have seen this done elsewhere but not with Fusion. The two shapes combined would create the fuselage shape of the space ship. The spaceship is not something that can be revolved like an old style 50's rocket. I need the fuselage shape to be correct so I can slice the model to create ribs to build a four foot model of just the fuselage. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks, Dave
Hi Dave Langkamp Thank you for watching!
Yes, You can actually combine modeling with sculpting, like this:
ruclips.net/video/C4GeAa1mYHA/видео.html
The last couple of reductions clearly worked. You can see the polygons all change and get bigger. Go look again.. Lars you need glasses!
I think the problem with the original model was simply because you didnt have the the entire model selected
Hi evil-doer Thank you for watching! AND comment!
Well I am getting old....I need to sit down with a beer and figure this out over the weekend :-)
My selection deselects as soon as I hit reduce, only gives me the option to convert 0 faces to 0 faces
Not sure I have an answer for this. Try here:

Actual manipulation happens around 5:50

hi lars, is there a way to edit an STL by converting it in fusion 360 to a solid then editing in zbrush? how does this happen? :D
Hi Farts4weightloss Thank you for watching!
I believe you can import an stl directly into zbrush. unless you want to change the stl, you might not need Fusion
thanks for the reply lars, although in truth, changing the STL is my intention so id need to make it into something fully editable.
For me the video would be more interesting if I see how you remodel at least one face, not just a little surface covering the nose
Thank you for the feedback! Make sense.
Best,
Lars
Do we get more beer? It got a bit messy in the middle but I think I got it.
What!!!! You are telling me that you already need more beer?... :-)
Lars Christensen no, not yet. I've been trying to save them to celebrate the move. There are some great beers in the case, you picked a good supplier.
reduce by face count not density
ctrl-a usually selects all in most apps.
Good point, I will have to see if that works in the mesh space
Please can you help me with a Fusion 360 T-shirt? and send it all the way to India?
I would love to, but honestly, I don't have any to send. I have two or three that I grabbed at a tradeshow
Watching this in 2020, there is no Mesh workspace...
Ah! Found it. Now it is a choice along the top to the right. Solid/Surface/Form/Mesh/Sheet Metal/Tools.
goes to show...fusion is so picky, counterintuitive and buggy that even a seasoned pro hits snags -_- seriously fusion sucks... but there is really no other good option... Even what computer you use affects how many bugs you get. Literally i'd go from laptop to desktop and id see different bugs with the exact same model on both computers
What? If you think Fusion sucks - just keep your computer off
Try out spaceclaim, lacks in some features vs fusion, but not in direct stl to mesh conversion!
