Bought the profx8v2 8-channel model and so far I really like it. I use it for adding multiple audio sources for podcasts and instructional videos and when not for that, I drag it into the basement for recording music. I hook up the output to a small PreSonus interface using Studio One 3 as my DAW and it's great. The mixer is also well built and solid. Good value for the price.
Have you used the USB out at all? I'm interested in buying the profx12v2 and using it as a recording interface at home, as well as a live setup at gigs.
Yes I have. The USB out works great. No problems whatsoever. Very happy with this mixer and its extremely well built and not all cheesy plastic. Plus the power supply is internal so there's no power brick to deal with which is nice. Have been using it for both podcast type work and also for music. I might buy another, possibly the larger model you're thinking of for my music only and just use my profx8v2 for the podcast and instructional audio-videos I produce.
Heads up... A "Mixer" is for live performances and provides two (2) channels out (L+R) to run to House PA/Monitors. You should not try to multi-track record with a mixer. If the Mixer has a USB output, it will only push 2 channels (L+R). An "Interface" is for (multitrack) recording and the number of simultaneously recordable tracks depends on the number of inputs of your Interface and the rest you set up in your DAW. Please do not buy a Mixer expecting an Interface and don't buy an Interface expecting a Mixer (adding fx to live mix via DAW will produce latency). Again... "Mixer" = 2 channels out for live stuff, "Interface" = multiple channels out for multitrack recording. Buy the right tool for the job and be happy! NOTE - Some really new hybrid devices are starting to make their way onto the market where you can operate a single device as either a Mixer OR an Interface (see Tascam 20x20 for example) Good luck!
hey, so you specifically said you shouldnt try to multi track record with a mixer. what if It's only a single track at a time? I bought one of these for live performance, because I already have an interface, I'm just wondering if i can use this device at all for recording
Why doesn't anyone make a full featured small mixer? I need a full featured 4 to 8 channel mixer with sweep able eq , FX, and compression on all channels. All of these companies want you to buy a 32 ch mixer just to get the features that you need!
Good digital mixers starts usually at 16 or 32 channels, and they cost at least ten times as much as the cheap analogue mixers. It is a tool, and for professionals that price is not much when they can store many mixes before a gig. They can save a lot of time when setting things up before a show, and also during the show because of those advanced mixers. But for the hobbyist, these functions isn't needed, but mixers are usually made for the professionals. The hobbyists are in minority.
Thanks for the informative video. Any idea on latency of the USB from mixer to PC? Trying to see if I can use this to record additional tracks to preexisting tracks on my DAW.
I have used and sold a lot of Mackie mixers over the years. Why has Mackie done away with the green "signal" light on each channel? You could always see at a quick glance which channels were getting signal.
hi, i have mackieprofx8 mixer, but i have this problem: i use plug, instead of cannon with my sintetizers, and i can not control gain? can you hepl me , thanks
Hello, I have the profx12v2. I'm running a rode procaster mic through it on mic input 1 bypassing my external mic preamp. I cannot get any sound out of the mic. There is no on/off switch that I can see on the mic itself. I have the main outs of the mixer going to my JBL sub in and the output of the sub going to my matching JBL monitors. I have USB going to the computer for computer audio. I've also tried using my external mic preamp and still get no sound what so ever. I have the main master fader up and the mic 1 fader up. Phantom power is on. Shouldn't I be getting some sort of noise even if I just tap on the mic to test if I wired it right? Can you think of anything I may be doing wrong? Thanks!
Hey Nick - Kinda of a Noob Question here - My Band is running 16 Microphones (Drums, Guitars direct, and Vocals ) into our current Mackie 3204 VLZ3 Mixer - We are limited in what we can send to our DAW's (Pro-Tools 12 and Audacity) - Do these Mixers (Specifically the 30 CH FXv2) have the capability of transferring each individual input from the mixer to individual inputs in the DAW ? I have heard only 2 Channels are fed thru the USB Connection !?
Hello! Jose from Sweetwater, here. Great question! With the ProFX mixers that include USB recording, they are only set to record the main stereo output signal into your DAW. They currently don't support multi-track recording for the individual inputs. I'd love to speak with you more on the details, so feel free to give me a shout at my contact information below. Thanks for the interest! Jose Gonzalez, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1786, jose_gonzalez@sweetwater.com
Hello! Jose from Sweetwater, here. Great question! Depending on the model of ProFX that we are looking at, there would either be a "2-track Return Level" control or a "Tape Level" control. Ive been using software for over 10 years and the past couple years ive started buying synths and now its time i get a mixer. I am at a high level so i want something serious but still for personal home studio. Ive been recommended mackie. Can someone who has real experience give me some honest advice on what mixer would be ideal for me? Extremely serious hobby so i am after quality. Thank you!
Mackie is great but be sure to get their VLZ series over the ProFX series. ProFX is much lower quality in terms of internal noise. Not good for studio/recording use.
There are 16 preset effects settings, some of which combine multiple effects, such as Delay & Reverb. You can see a list of them in the close up camera shots.
Alright, so I've got a question. Lol when recording with this mixer, does it separate all ten mix channels into separate channels??? I'm thinking about getting the Mackie ProFX16v2, but I want a mixer that'll separate all the mic inputs into separate channels in my DAW. If the Mackie ProFX16v2 doesn't do that, do any of you know of one that does that's reasonably priced???
you want an Interface, not a Mixer... Mixers are designed for live performances and only push 2 channels (L+R)... an Interface is for multitrack recording.
+Roe Sham Boe lol I know what a mixer is. This is a USB mixer though, so I assumed it was a hybrid. Either way, I wound up buying a different hybrid mixer anyhow. Lol
Hey, Autistic Machine. Thanks for reach out! The major differences in the Mackie Pro FX V3 are as follows: 1. Onyx Preamps 2. 24 new GigFX 3. 48v on all mic channels 4. 24 bit/192khz A/D convertors 5. One knob Compressors If there is anything else I can help with, please reach out. Thanks, Grant Embury, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1647, Grant_embury@Sweetwater.com
+patricksudbury it's mixed down to 2 channels. Also the USB seems to 'hang' sometimes on Win 7. unplug and insert usb cable usually solves it; at least on my 16 ch.
I have the profx8v2. In general OK but recording level thru the USB is horrible. Will all settings set to what Mackie suggests and calls 'Unity' gain, 1/4 inch registers in DAW at -40db and Shure SM57 mic via XLK registers at -30db. To get a basic audio thru to your DAW, you have to set all faders to MAX (with the hissing that comes along with it). Unacceptable if you ask me.
I understand the problem of low level to hiss is a common complaint. I have been using a Presonus mobile to get the signal in up till now. I am considering the profx8ve. I read above where Steve Roginski takes the output from his mackie and feeds it into his "small Presonus interface". I'm wondering if the output from that would then provide a sufficient signal to use. Any ideas?
Thanks for the input Mark. I gave up recording via USB. Spent evenings troubleshooting but to no avail. On my to-do list, is what you're suggesting. I have an old Steinberg CI1 interface that i was thinking of sticking between the Mackie and my IMac. I'm not sure how Steve Roginski hooked up his Presonus ; does the Presonus have a USB In or does he feed the Presonus via the Channel Outs of his Mackie ?
When using the PreSonus interface, I'm not using the USB of the mixer. I'm going from the outputs on the mixer to the interface and using the USB of the interface to the computer. If having gain issues, this will resolve it. On another note, if using the Mackie mixer as a standalone with its USB and need a silent recording such as spoken words of soft singing with little to no music, you'll have a problem. Especially if using dynamic vocal mics as I have also experienced needing far too much gain. I do use this mixer without the PreSonus for podcasts although I'm using condenser mics, Audio Technica AT2020's which make a big difference and I never need excessive gain. I'm at 2/3 on the gain and about - 7db on the slider when using a condenser mic and its quiet at those levels. To my understanding, a cheaper analog mixer will never be as quiet as an interface. If needing a dead-silent mixer, you'll have to buy a more expensive digital model.
Thanks Steve. You are confirming what i experienced attempting to record voice and guitar on the Mackie via USB. I actually did a quick test this morning where I connected the Mackie main outs to the Steinberg CI1 interface that then connects via USB to the Imac. With this setup, i dont have to max out the gains on the Mackie. I can leave them all at 'U'. First tests are promising but will have to do more. Now wondering if i should dish out a few extra $ to replace my old Steinberg with a Presonus.
Hi Richard. You just happened to catch me while I'm outside in the shed enjoying a Christmas Eve cigar. IMO, the PreSonus Audiobox might be a wise investment. Its only $99, dead silent, well made and includes Studio One Artist which is actually pretty good. I like the PreSonus since there's no latency issues...ever with the right settings. Although Macs are engineered differently and handle latency much better than Windows. I have a fairly new iMac but use a Windows 10 laptop to record with. Get the little PreSonus box, you'll like it. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AudioBoxUSB
You don't even say it but I know you're talking about passive speakers how will anyone know what you're talking about if you don't state it you just say connect them to this quarter inch or XLR in the back

Hi, I have and gave up. Recording level via USB was way too low.
I used that at part time radio station for FM traditional radio station!
Thanks for this Video, I seen this today at Guitar Center! Might add this to my studio
Wonderful review!
Cool looks like a decent hardware. Looks like Mackie is on top of all mixers.

Roe Sham Boe dose this work with protools software through USB??
Roe Sham Boe will this work to run my powered main speaker and connect to a powered mixer to run my nonpowered monitor speakers?
I really wish I saw this before I bought a mixer thinking it was also an interface. Very little info out there about the USB.
crap. I bought drum mics so I could record with this mackie mixer
How do u use the subwoofer channels??
3'51@ cathedral reverb is ideal for your church session
Thanks for review. Only question I still have is - do you have any control over USB out to computer? Any at all?

can you use these to record drums?
What happened to the 'solo' button? :s pitty

Is this good for studio recording songs?????
is the 16 channel rackable in 19”
?
Greetings. I bought a Mackie ProFx12. How do I get the software for it? Is it free?
how loud db out put ?
I still like the Allen&Heath mixers better.Just a tiny bit more expensive for the ZED line.
Wait, can I record all the mics simultaneously out of the usb port into logic pro? Other people are saying the USB out only records 2 tracks?
@@sweetwater Cheers man I'll email you
@@sweetwater does the USB output recognize on Linux and will it allow a record to the Linux DAW ( audacity) or another type
I have the 12ch one, do you know what kind of speaker that i can use? Tq
Any powered speaker that can accept balanced XLR inputs. There are also 1/4" unbalanced line outs. Download a copy of the manual for greater details.

As far as recording to computer...you said only stereo left and right? so I cannot record the separate tracks to my DAW? Not clear about this.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Figured it out. Thanks for trying to help out though. I was mis interpreting what the unit does.
figured out what I was doing wrong. Sorry about the confusion. Got it working correctly now.
