My dad had a mine in the area at the time. He ran into Charlie a few times on the road. They knew each other by name. I was with him once but to young to remember. He talked about them acting crazy and running around naked. Scary times. Thanks for sharing this.
Sad to see the ranch destroyed, I was there in the 90’s and it was in good shape, spent the night. There was spring water piped down to the front and watering an orchard and I fixed some of the piping to continue watering all the trees. The tile was on the floor and you can see the shotgun blast in the floor that a sheriff had an unsafe discharge. Glad I got a lot of photos of the ranch before the fire.
I became obsessed with the Helter Skelter crap when I was 16, back in 1990. I couldn't get the information from my mind for YEARS. Watching this footage gives me chills. I guess that's why I re-visit the Spahn Ranch and death valley every so often. Also, because in my mind, I am so intrigued to go back in that time. I still watch old videos of Sharon Tate as well. Maybe it's because of that era that draws me. THIS is the FIRST video that has actually shown Way more artifacts than I could have ever asked for. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!
I read the books by Susan and Tex in 1988. Those books reveal the parts that people are still afraid to talk about. The part where Manson mentions Fard's cult. The master mind is W.D. Fard. L. Ron Hubbard developed Fard's theology into Dianetics. Manson and the NOI were the first to be audited and Manson was released after becoming OT Clear. The Manson Family carried out orders given through Fard's teachings. The first slayings began in Detroit, 1933. Zebra, Zodiac, and Helter Skelter are all connected to the same network. The call to activate Fard's plan was given in Harlem by Amiri Baraka and Sun Ra in 1968. It's called A Black Mass. Helter Skelter was only a cover up for Zebra, which is an obvious code for black on white provocation.
I would LOVE to go there🤭 unfortunately I live in Alabama (town with 2,000 people) I’ve been trying to get out and make my way to California since I was first saw the beautiful landscape when I was looking at pictures of the Manson family, I’ve been interested since I was a kid! I’m 19 now and still trying to get free. I also think about Sharon a lot, she was very beautiful and had a fruitful life ahead of her I’m sure. Also have you read the book “my life with Charles Manson” by Paul Watkins? It’s amazing and gives so many new details, and it’s in audio form on RUclips! Or goodbye helter skelter is another good one.
You are an excellent tour guide thank you for sharing this with us!! It's real cool of you to leave the items you found behind where you found them. Too bad others have not done so. - Have a beautiful day!
In younger years I made a few trips exploring around death valley. About 1991 after a trip to oregon, on my way back to colorado, I drove from Lone Pine through Keeler, stopped to check out Ballarat town site, then drove up Goler wash, found an old vw beetle body at a turnout that led to the Barker ranch main house maybe 100-150 feet beyond. At that time the main house looked in relatively good shape with a fresh exterior paint job. Continuing up the road to Mengel pass I noticed what looked like a dumping site in a ravine behind the house, with lots of tin cans, old pipe, mattress springs, other junk. After reading a couple books about the manson family when I was a teenager, it was interesting to get out to see that area.
Finally the best most complete picture and story of the people and area around the barker ranch. I always wanted to know more and it finally happened. Thank you very much for probably the most complete facts
I already saw a video on the barker ranch, the ranch was not covered as extensively as your video. This is the best I have seen on the ranch very interesting thank you 🌸
An interesting story about the Manson family. My mother was a nurse at Goleta Valley General Hospital in the 1970's. I don't remember the year except early '70's. Anyway, 3 people were sleeping on the beach in Isla Vista and they were attacked by someone or someones with a hachet. Two died on the beach, the other died a day later in the ward my mother worked. She said his brain had sand in it. There were no clues to the murders. Years later some Manson members claimed that they had done it but then refused to talk. The case has never been solved as far as I know.
On July 5th 1970, three young men, Thomas Victor Dolan (17) of Manhattan Beach, Thomas Hayes (19) of Hermosa Beach and Homer Clyde Shadwick (19) of Saginaw, Michigan were discovered by a passer-by on a beach in Santa Barbara, that straddled the University of California Santa Barbara building at Campus Point. Two of the young men had succumbed to their injuries, while the third, Thomas Hayes had been rushed to hospital in nearby Goleta in critical condition, after the three appeared to have been subjected to a frenzied attack with a bladed weapon while camping out in their sleeping bags on the night of the July 4th 1970. Fortunately for Thomas Hayes, he survived the brutal assault.
Fantastic mini series, thanks! I've visited Ballarat and many of the mining areas in the Panamint mountains but these videos really shined the light on much of the history. Really cool seeing the dirt bikes going up Surprise Canyon and also the background info on Barker Ranch. It would be great to learn a bit of history about your dad and his knowing the Ballarat area really well!
Thanks for your tour and stories of the Barker Ranch. We love to camp in Death Valley in our 4x4 truck camper, as there is so much to explore and see. I'm glad I got photos of the inside of the ranch house in 2007. I blog about places to camp in Death Valley at Making Trax Camping and have shared your link to this informative video, thanks.
Great video series, thank you. Look forward to more. Love the story of you and Grandpa and the IT on the lake bed, I Rode and IT 400 as well. Awesome description of the ranch.
Could some one please explain the barcode thing to me. If 86 was the first 2 digits, and they depict the year, how did Manson get a hold of those bottles in 1971? They weren't even made. Or did he have someone buy those bottles in 86 and put them there?
I interpreted it as Manson said he figured he'd be out in 15 years, so the remaining Manson members not incarcerated bought the liquor and buried the bottles in or just after 1986 in anticipation of his release and return to Barker. Just a guess though.
I really enjoyed that the man knows his shit i live 3 miles west of where the old sphan movie ranch was now that place has a lot of history from the late 30s up to mid 70s.
