  • The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak is one of the greatest accomplishments in wrestling history. For 21 WrestleMania's, the Undertaker won his match, and as the years went on, especially after WrestleMania 21 against Randy Orton. The Streak just became more legendary every single year. It wasn't just the fact he was winning, the longer the Streak got, and the older the Undertaker got, somehow. The better the matches got, the better the Undertaker got. After classics with Shawn Michaels, Triple H, CM Punk to name a few. The Streak became mythical. Something that was a must see event every single year.. but then just when we least expected it, IT DIED, thanks to Brock Lesnar
    Lets go back and take a look at the Streak. What made it so special.. but also The Night The Streak Died..

      I don’t mind that the streak was broken but it was done in a bad way. They should have had Taker pick up a couple more wins and then have him face an up and coming star in like 2016/2017 and have that be his retirement match. Imagine him being 24-0 and facing someone like Rollins, Bray Wyatt, McIntyre, or Braun Strowman and one of them getting the win after a grueling match. Then Taker retires and doesn’t have to have any below par matches with the mystique gone. Brock didn’t need to get that win he was already established and it could have helped create a new star in a huge way.

  • @namenamename390
    @namenamename390 Год назад +56

    The question "should the streak have ended?" is so incredibly hard to answer.
    On the one hand, if Taker could survive his match against HHH in HiaC, then there was basically nothing sensible that could ever defeat him at Mania.
    On the other hand, the fact that the streak has ended stopped it from being the sole thing that defines his legacy. Taker has done so much more than the streak, it would be a shame if he was primarily remembered as "the guy who never lost at Mania".
    If I could rewrite history, I would've let him retire at a clean 20-0. He really didn't have anything more to prove after that match. Especially now after Mark Callaway has talked about his career, it becomes hard to watch his last matches knowing he pretty much was in constant pain. But even though this might be _my_ ideal end to his legendary career, I can't say if it's objectively the best way to end it.

    • @RaytheGrayt
      @RaytheGrayt Год назад +3

      Undertaker even during the last ride documentary told HBK that he should've left with him after their match. After the triple h "end of an era" match with the three standing on stage together was the perfect end. He didn't need anymore, and that was probably the last great performance we saw. Of course only he knows his own body and it's limit but as a fan that's what I saw and thought. And you're 100 percent correct of Undertaker being so much more than just being undefeated at wrestlemania. I remember in 98 watching him as his prince of darkness era, at his absolute peak as a character and already knowing he was legendary.
      As far as the streak ending, Cena had already been established as the biggest face of the company and it could've turned fans even more sour on him for not needing it, and all of the newer guys beating him and not living up to expectation, or leaving like cm punk did would've been a gigantic waste. Brock was the only one that could've done it as he still had more left in the tank, had history with him, the credentials, and it was long term booking as Taker didn't know how much longer he could go, with Brock pretty much inheriting his phenom status as the main event guy that wrestle as an attraction. I think the match not being good is what deep down truly bothered people. Had the match and build had lived up to their other matches it would've been alright.

    I was in the crowd that night. A moment I will never forget.
    We in the audience could tell the match was lackluster and that Undertaker wasn't his usual self. Plus, we had gone through a lot of the card by then, including Bryan's match against Triple H earlier. A lot of the crowd, myself included, were emotionally exhausted by this point.
    When the ref counted three and we realized Lesnar ended the streak, my friends and I were in complete disbelief. There was a stunned silence in the Superdome. We thought it was a major botch by the ref.
    I quit watching wrestling shortly after this. I don't think the streak should have ever ended. Some things should stay intact and keep a legacy. Ultimately it didn't benefit any long-term wrestling storyines or give a new star a rub. What's really disappointing is how underwhelming the build to this match, and the actual bout, were. The streak's end deserved way more gravitas beforehand.
    In retrospect, this signaled how inane and poroly thought out Vince's creative and business sense became.

IMO I think it was the right call to end it because I think it was clear that Taker couldn’t do this for much longer. I feel like what could’ve made the match 10 times better would be 1. Taker not getting a concussion and 2. Building up Brock more before this match like give him the win against Cena and HHH.

      Taker's age was catching up to him. It could have been somebody else, like Chris Jericho. Imagine Y2J bragging about *that* the next evening on Raw. But I've made peace with the result. Wrestling is boring when the heroes win all the time - which is why so many people, including myself, got so sick of John Cena - and when any result is a foregone conclusion, the audience grows bored. The end of the streak was a Wrestlemania moment that people will talk about forever, not unlike Shawn Michaels ending Ric Flair's career. Both matches were in the same vein; like Flair, Taker's age had taken its toll on him, and he was in the ring with a wrestler who was in the best shape of his life.

    I remember being in 5th grade for Shawn Michaels upcoming retirement WM match. I remember how much hype THAT kind of match received. Streak VS Career. We were a few away from approaching 20-0, but we were desperate to watch because we weren’t sure. The fact that Vince chose to give it to a guy who didn’t need it, and a guy who is no where near as revered or accomplished as the guys before him, speaks a lot about his lack of understanding of the business as the years passed by. After the ruthless aggression era, Vince really lost sight of the company…

    • @RatedRRaj
      @RatedRRaj Год назад

      Vince needed the right person for the job and he got him. A heavyweight UFC champion speaks all the marbles and that was their perfect draw. Why would he pick a has been like Shawn Michaels over someone like Bork Lazer to end the streak? HBK was practically done at that time whereas Bork still had/has many years left. They had to pick someone who would go down and be remembered as the one to have ended the streak *forever* . At the time I didn’t think Bork was the wisest choice however looking back at it now makes complete sense, UFC heavyweight champion, a massive draw that gets buys, still young, many years left, talented. Randy Orton was actually offered to end the streak back at Wrestlemania 21 in 2005 but he refused out of respect for Taker. Now Bork on the other hand just doesn’t give a F lol.

    • @RatedRRaj
      @RatedRRaj Год назад

      @@markie2xx I know you asked the other guy but for me personally if Kane were to end it then it should have been by 2004. Ending it afterwards would have been meaningless since thats when the streak became a 'thing' mostly. The longer the streak went on and on meant they had to use someone really worthy to be remembered as the one to end it. At that time there were a lot bigger draws than Kane and they needed the right man for the job. Remember we're talking about ending Taker's streak here which is more prestigious and greater than winning a world title; or at least that's what they made it out to be like due to the fact they gave the streak a whole whopping 21 victories. Superstars like Kane, HBK, HHH, Cena etc are all established anyways so it wouldn't have really added all that much to them. Lesnar on the other hand had a huge stint in 2002-2003 but that was it really. He returned much later on but they needed something to give him some kind of 'ooomph' if you know what I mean (lol 😂), and ending the streak was it. But that's just my opinion and take on it anyway because that's how another guy explained it to me and it made a lot of sense to me.

I mean there are still some highly talked moments, but I'm talking about major ones. And plus, that question "If Brock can't beat him, then who can" is a very good question. Undertaker has gotten old, and while Brock wasn't young young, he's still very athletic. I think losing the streak became a natural thing because The Undertaker was no longer at his prime, and him defending the streak became tougher. Also Undertaker and Brock go way back to Ruthless Aggression days so it's not like some random new guy ended the streak. I think it was a good move. However him losing to Roman I don't support.
