“The Death Of Superman” match was such a spectacle live but with wresting moving so fast in recent years, you remember things like this like it was yesterday when it was almost a decade ago.
Yeah, but there is one thing that I disagree with you and other people alike. That is the comparison between super Cena and Superman. Superman is not like super cena.

2014 was Brock Lesnar's year. Ending the Undertaker's streak at Wrestlemania 30 and squashing John Cena at Summer Slam for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Both of my childhood heroes got destroyed in 2 of the biggest shows.
From a storytelling POV this booking made total sense. Lesnar had just destroyed the Wrestlemania streak, his momentum was too great. Also their last match at extreme rules ( circa 2012) ended with Cena winning clean. Lesnar needed to repay the favour. This is one of my favourite ever matches. I love to see Cena lose and Brock wreck havoc. This is like doomsday vs superman the wrestling version.

I'll say that 2009 and 2010 were the prime Super Cena years, but I vividly remember watching his match against Brock Lesnar and was shook that he barely managed to get any offense going, not to mention the fact that Brock absolutely destroyed him. That match marked the end of Super Cena and the birth of Suplex City.

This was also the birth of "Suplex City" and Brock coming up with his own "2 Moves of Doom" consisting of Suplexes and F5s. The birth and realisation that Brock didn't even have to put in any work and just have to show up, suplex a bunch, F5, and leave. The squash match Brock was born. It's also crazy how they'd been pushing his Kimora Lock submission for years and making it be so lethal and putting people out of action and then it was just forgotten after this match.

This was just a few months after Wrestlemania 30. A night that quintessentially changed the landscape of things in WWE when it came to Super Cena. On that night of Wrestlemania 30, not only did Brock end the Undertaker's streak, but Cena beat Bray Wyatt in a move that was universally panned by everyone. After that backlash at such an extreme level, the WWE made the smart move to pivot to Brock whom had just beaten the Undertaker's streak and have him destroy Cena the way someone who WOULD have beaten the streak should.

Another thing that really sold Cena's beating during the Summerslam 2014 match was the commentary. Lawler was in denial over Cena losing to Lesnar until the end. Cole kept selling the seriousness of the beating and how the ref might have to stop the match. The sad piano cover of Cena's music was a nice ending touch though.
I was 7 when this happened, so i couldnt stay up and watch it live(im from England)so my dad would record it after watching it for me to watch the morning after. Everytime i would ask him “Did Cena Win?” He would smile, turn it on and we watched him win his match. I couldn’t even finish 22 jump street. First one totally memorable second one that’s debatable. CM PUNK is overrated. Guardians was fun but the second one is better. The story is more character driven and it’s emotionally satisfying. Daniel Bryan’s lady title reign was his best title reign. The shield breaking up is one of raw’s most shocking but greatest moments of all time.

Grew up watching John Cena. He was one of my favorites back when he was on Smackdown when I was like 8. Fast forward and 2010 I'm 15 or at least about to be (August B-day) and just got tired of him. Already was a TNA fan but then also started watching ROH to fill the void since I had the channel it was on plus for a brief time Championship Wrestling From Hollywood. Then I hear Lesnar came back but wasn't enough cause he lost to Cena first. Then something about SummerSlam 2014 I just turned 19 and yeah I watched it and couldn't be happier and got back into WWE for a few more years til Roman got pushed hard.
I’ll never forget watching this live, my favorite wrestler of all time is Brock & 14 year old me was screaming at the tv crying and banging the floor so happy out of my mind. I got friends who are older wrestling fans and they absolutely loved seeing Cena get his ass whooped by Brock that night. For everyone who hated Super Cena, this match is absolutely cathartic for them.
I remember I was just 5 or 6 years old that time and I was literally waiting for that moment when suddenly John Cena would have turned the game but unfortunately that moment never came I miss that super Cena
It was annoying to watch Brock be uncontestable. But in hindsight they did it amazingly well, if anything the lack of credible competition was in part due to how Cena was always treated to be on another level. So the guy who destroyed him so one-sidedly really wouldn't have any problems when Super Cena would always narrowly win against everyone.
If I may, I believe this decision also came because of the Chris Benoit incident. WWE virtually had to do this since they are a publicly traded company, and did not want to scare the shareholders. To accomplish this, WWE had to clean its image in front of the public, and Cena was the perfect vessel.
This match is what I truly consider the dawn of the dark ages in WWE. This match showed that WWE was going in the complete wrong direction. Brock winning wasn't the issue at all. The issue was that Brock Lesnar (in this era of WWE) CANT WRESTLE!!! He held the title for as long as he did and the only people who basically forced him to wrestle were aj styles and Roman reigns. His matches were the epitome of boring. "Suplex, repeat, suplex, repeat" is the lamest match design ever. It was horrible. Brock Lesnars writing for this period of time was a curse on the WWE. It actually got me to stop watching. I stopped watching right before COVID and I haven't tuned in since. I think I tuned into WrestleMania to watch Roman vs Cody.

It was annoying to watch Brock be uncontestable. So the guy who destroyed him so one-sidedly really wouldn't have any problems when Super Cena would always narrowly win against everyone.
If I may, I believe this decision also came because of the Chris Benoit incident.
