Every Beatles video: Paul: Always looking like he's actually enjoying himself. John: Occasionally cracks a smile. Ringo: Concentration/Boredom. George: Always looking like he wants to be somewhere else.
This song showcases the best talent of all four Beatles. George's lead guitar sound more like church bells than a guitar. Paul's bassline supplements the melody beautifully. Ringo's best drumming ever, and he does it so effortlessly. And John? Just the greatest words, melody, and performance. Perfection.
I swear to god this is one of the most impressive and complete compositions ever created. This really showcases every Beatle at their very best, not only as individuals but as a unit. From the amazing, innovative bass-line to the rampaging, flow-state drumming to the droning, dreamlike guitar rift and of course the poignant lyrical skill of Lennon that pulls you into a world that you can REALLY visualize. On top of that, when everything’s put together it blends so seamlessly, like a perfect puzzle; much like the vocal harmony that is literally like crack to my ear. It’s like the whole song is in a perfectly balanced counterpoint between all instruments and voices.
I've seriously never understood why everybody always says that. It seems like it's changing. He's a great drummer even technically, not to mention musically -- and before you think about the historical context. I always think about the figure of the _drummer_ in rock before the Beatles: it basically didn't exist. Ringo created it.
Listen to *ANY* Beatles number and the drumming will be exactly right for it. Ringo's expertise was in judging what the song needed and then playing it without over-elaboration. Ockham's Razor states that what can be done with less is done in vain with more. Personally, I agree.
They were born to play together. When John met Paul and they discovered they had very similar musical tastes, they developed a wordless language. As they began to try to write their own songs, each became familiar with the process the other employed, and in their secret language of feel, they were able at times to finish each other's sentences, metaphorically speaking. But songwriting was something they felt obligated to do. Playing live together was more of a compulsion.
I think what’s fascinating about them is that they behave like very wise children. They sing these amazing songs, but they’re always looking off in different directions, apparently losing interest, forgetting where they are, laughing at something random and then momentarily reconnecting with the fact that they’re meant to be performing! It’s very adorable.
My favourite clip is a live performance of "All My Loving" where John is playing amazing rhythm guitar whist chatting nonchalantly to George... I think it was in Miami.
quite possibly the most Beatlesque song of all time...Johns always confident vocals...McCartneys gorgeous bass line...Georges classic jingle guitar ...and last but not least Ringos incredible tasty drumming...Thank you God for the Beatles...!!
For 99% of bands, All Things Must Pass, Hear Me Lord, and Isn't It A Pity would be their best work. For the Beatles, it wasn't even worth their time to record them
They're why I picked up the guitar 30 years ago. Lennon is why I play rhythm guitar. As a player, you long for the magic and camaraderie they had. I don't see that with other bands to this day.
@@lorissantarsiero5849 The most under rated Beatle song ever.. Because Paperback writer was so heavily promoted, rightfully so. Rain was an after thought.. To me this was Ringo's best drumming of the early days.. John actually mention this song when asked about Ringo's drumming.. When John was making a solo album he turned to the studio drummer and said.. why can't you drum like Ringo?? That's how much he appreciated his drumming..
I recall an interview he gave in which he was asked which Beatles track was his best work, and he said this one. He told us that he knows his own style well, but that this number was almost unrecognizable to him, and that he didn't think he'd be able to reproduce it. He's been called the king of feel - here's good example of that.
Absolutely his most creative, free wheeling "let it all hand out" drumming as a Beatle. Triplets, fills, standard keeping time, the whole bit mixed in as he felt it. Superb. A huge part of the song.
The last song I enjoyed with my Dad while he was still alive....This song has more meaning to me then every song by every artist of all time...I love you dad
Phenomenal? Now look at the 0:44 mark. Ringo drags the transition too long and isn’t entering the first beat with the rest of the band. In 1971 he couldn’t play the part Quincy Jones expected from him and was substituted by a double. So I don’t know what phenomenon are you talking about…
I'm 65 years old and incredibly , only heard this song for the first time two weeks ago. From the very first listen it struck me as a masterpiece. A truly superlative recording. The first thing that grabs you by the scruff of the neck is Ringo's drumming. The next thing that hits you is Paul's bass.. But that's not all. This song gives and gives. A masterful performance justifying their position as the greatest band of all time.
Rain and Paperback Writer signaled the psychedelic shift in everything. If you were old enough then, their debut on the radio was mind blowingly cool; you knew THIS was something brand new and revolutionary. The whole feel and sound was astounding, fresh and moved the human race forward a step or two and made you more aware. THANKS.
To think back then that teenage fans were listening to this single having no clue that the album was going to be completely the same tectonic shift of the music landscape. They literally changed the way you look at studios. Before, it was to go in and play your instruments.... after that album the studio itself was seen as an instrument. Stunning.
Too young to understand or appreciate in 1966 yet soon after loved the blazing white hot guitar of Writer. Rain took longer for me to catch on yet once I did I always crank it up!
Yep, that middle eight section of “Dr. Robert” is like Pink Floyd before Pink Floyd. Also “Across the Universe”, “#9 Dream”, “Julia”, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, “Strawberry Fields”, “Mind Games”, “Tomorrow Never Knows”, etc all have that DREAM hypnotic trance state to them
@ Cranberry Crunch That dream-like quality was a result of three factors: doing a lot of acid, having the greatest producer in the world in George Martin to be able to translate your musical ideas into realities sound-wise, and being a brilliant songwriter to begin with. Which Lennon certainly was.
I think the fact they they are as popular as ever over 1/2 a century later and still so beloved and respected confirms it will be a really long time before they are forgotten. As a matter of fact my money would be on that they won't be forgotten until or unless all of human history is somehow erased or destroyed.
The amazing bass riffs, The incredible drumming, the stunning harmonies, Harrison's unique guitar chords, John's vocals and George Martin's unbelievable production and special effects. 3 minutes 8 seconds of perfection. And this was only the B side of the record!
I remember when this first came out...the end of the school year in 1966 - the 7th grade for me. "Paperback Writer" was on the A side of this single and was a great song. But I remember liking "Rain" a lot more just because you could distinguish every instrument, every lick, every nuance in the recording of the song, something that was completely new at the time. We went crazy over Paul's bass line. Before this, the bass in "pop" music was never this out front. And Ringo's drums were also brought up in the mix. Plus the guitars were so bright and crisp sounding. Superb vocals. My friends and I would air-guitar, air-bass, and air-drum this song over and over and over again. And we loved singing along with this, especially when you came to the ending line, "Can you heeeeeeeear mmmmmee." Phenomenal song.
I was 8 when this came out, but I do remember it. I remember thinking that I'd never heard anything like it before. A song about how people ACT? Every other rock song I had ever heard was about girls, cars, girls, dancing, girls, etc, and an odd Meaningful Folk Song or two.
I was 12. I thought it should have been the A side. But then it wasn't even on any album, just a single. Interesting ,though, how Paul does a non love song like Paperback Writer, and Lennon pens Rain. Neither wrote a love song. I miss those days.

What is so magical about The Beatles is that while all the pieces of what they did could be found in classical music, blues, jazz, early rock, and elsewhere... there was NO ONE who could have put them all together like that and made such shockingly original music all things considered. The Beatles were - and still are - unbelievable. And as a drummer I can't ever take my eyes off that lovely, minimalist kit of Ringo's with the iconic logo... the ultimate drumset for the ultimate time-keeper...
Agree!! Also as a fellow drummer, I want to state that Ringo is a master at staying in his lane and never “over-drumming” the songs. And his Sound, his tuning, his approach is as unmistakable to the ear as any other considered great drummer.
Bass is not a difficult instrument to play to be honest. However and with that said, McCartney was an exceptionally fine 'finger-picker' on an acoustic guitar. He had his own unique style which many have tried to emulate down the decades. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!!

I can’t begin to describe how unbelievable this song is. It’s simply heaven worthy. Lennon once again proving his songwriting genius with the psychedelic whimsy of his lyrics. The harmonies are idyllic, the drone-like guitar is brilliant, ringos drumming genius and maccas bass weaving between it all in a way that only he could. The Beatles were voted again 5 decades in a row the greatest band of all time, hell they haven't even played a song together since 1970, they are at the very top of the pinnacle and there's nobody even close up there, but midway down that pinnacle mountain you got a whole bunch of bands fighting for second place, it's just the way it is, the sooner you accept it the sooner your life will be that much better!! They sing these amazing songs, but they’re always looking off in different directions, apparently losing interest, forgetting where they are, laughing at something random and then momentarily reconnecting with the fact that they’re meant to be performing! It’s very adorable.

Just another example of Ringo's impeccable timing and easy style.
Ringo sounded as if he had 4 or 5 floor- toms and snares ....great performance
I recall an interview he gave in which he was asked which Beatles track was his best work, and he said this one. He told us that he knows his own style well, but that this number was almost unrecognizable to him, and that he didn't think he'd be able to reproduce it. He's been called the king of feel - here's good example of that.
Yes .... How he got so much out of that kit is amazing.. And the tie is so Cool
Sorry. I’ll have to go back and listen a second time bc I was mesmerized by Paul’s bass playing the first time through
Pete never could have pulled this off.
Ringo's input to the band's sound is often overlooked... I sometimes refer to him as 'the 4th Beatle'.
Ringo's drumming is perfection in this song
F**king right!!!!......
Absolutely his most creative, free wheeling "let it all hand out" drumming as a Beatle. Triplets, fills, standard keeping time, the whole bit mixed in as he felt it. Superb. A huge part of the song.
so underrated
Paul's bass line which is similar to a lead guitar vamping, left Ringo ( or whomever played it in the studio ) more room to play the fills.

The drums in this song are just phenomenal! Ringo is truly one of the best drummers of all time!
Phenomenal? Now look at the 0:44 mark. Ringo drags the transition too long and isn’t entering the first beat with the rest of the band. In 1971 he couldn’t play the part Quincy Jones expected from him and was substituted by a double. So I don’t know what phenomenon are you talking about…

What! Your LAME!
Welcome brother
Where have been the last 65 years? I heard this when I was 8 or 9 years old. My older brothers and sisters had about every 45rpm and album put out.
@@Lmclean89 I just loved it at 15. The lyrics did it for me

At one point, I feared the Beatles will be forgotten one day. But like Beethoven and Mozart, their music is forever immortal
Not anytime soon. My 3 year old is a big fan.
I think the fact they they are as popular as ever over 1/2 a century later and still so beloved and respected confirms it will be a really long time before they are forgotten. Every Beatle playing their best in this song
It doesn't get any better than this.
Contex is everything!!!
Not pop . It’s rock
I was 8 when this came out, but I do remember it. I remember thinking that I'd never heard anything like it before. A song about how people ACT? Every other rock song I had ever heard was about girls, cars, girls, dancing, girls, etc, and an odd Meaningful Folk Song or two.
