Why Does My Voice Go Hoarse When I Sing?
This is an extremely common thing. I think it's best to first understand why this happens.
When we speak, we speak at certain volume levels and a certain amount of "sound pressure" in the throat and on our vocal cords.
When we sing, not only does that sound pressure increase but the dynamic range (from low to high and back) increases considerably compared to the monotone nature in which we speak.
This places tremendous stress on the vocal cords and throat and requires a tremendous amount of body strength to accommodate this sound pressure.
Learning how to control this volume with correct breathing, correct open throat technique, and not "overusing air" maintaining a bright ping sound in the voice is how we overcome this.
I cover this thoroughly in my singing course.

I religiously follow your " how to warm up the voice correctly". I even believe the order has made a difference (trills first, then tongue scales, then open vowels). It has not failed me yet. My voice is stronger, more resilient, and I can go hours at rehearsals with no hoarseness. You are the best!

Thank you for sharing! I'm a former opera singer and lost my voice many years ago from using improper technique. After my surgery, I'm still trying to learn how to sing all over again. I'd like to sing in a different style. Amy lee from evanescence inspired me to start singing again. It would be great if you did a vocal analysis of "Going Under" live acoustic someday.

You definitely touched on something that I tend to struggle with. Do you think you could possibly do a video covering dynamic vs effort and how to maintain that control of adjusting and working on different dynamics rather than simply higher pitch/dynamic = higher effort and pushing harder?

Well if you wear your voice out and don't use it properly that's a good sign of being hoarse and tired if you don't use the voice the correct way or properly or over do it where you kill your voice and get tired easily or it could be a age thing thanks for sharing Ken very helpful

I was told I couldn't sing by my mother as a small child. She was a trained operatic/classical singer, and she thought you were either born with it or not. I took up guitar. I found I had a talent in picking up musical instruments quickly, and learned anything I could get my hands on. I never sang until I was in college, and a friend convinced me to join the choir because it gave a 500 dollar (this was back in 1996, mind you) scholarship that we could get refunded in cash bc our tuition and board was paid up. I found with practice I could stay on pitch. I then switched to a theatre major, and found that once I had the pitch, I could go back their effortlessly. About five years later I started recording myself over and over doing different songs. I would work on one forever, agonizing over every note until I could do them all. So I learned you can teach yourself to sing. And I found confidence to sing to girlfriends... which was what I honestly wanted. To be able to give a song to her... when it is just us. But I became a bit of a chameleon. I can alter my voice to sound like whatever.... but what do I sound like naturally? So I have been working on that. Then I stumble across you today... and man, your story sounds like mine. I'm signing up....bc I relate to everything you said in your back story. I get it! I've been there! And I have watched a ton of you and your students' videos already. Your subscription is way cheaper than what I spent on guitar lessons back in the 90s... like 60 bucks a month for one 30 minute lesson a week. My goal is to be able to sing Con Te Partiro to my wife at our next anniversary...in front of people. I'm giving you a try brother, just bc I related so much to how you began to learn to sing. If I succeed.... I'm hard headed and diagnosed OCD, so I don't see me quiting out of frustration....I will send you a video. I'm closer to 50 than 40. I've been looking at vocal lessons and how to afford the cost and extra time while balancing work and family as a son, father, husband, grandfather (yes, I know I'm getting on in the years) , and teacher who is active in their community and the lives on current and past students. I'm cheap, and a hard sell to boot. And you gave me something I can relate to. You got my money, and it is HARD to get me to drop cash on anything outside of basic needs...especially in this economy, lol. Seriously, I'm super excited about this. Cannot wait to start. And more than anything cannot wait to sing to my wife in front of her family on 2/23. I promise on my family, I will send you a video of it if I can pull it off. I know that's a tough song... but goals shouldn't be easy. God bless ya, brother.

Hi Hulk Ken, I haven't practiced for about two months or so, but I will take that back so pretty soon. I'd downloaded all of your videos where you teach all the vocals technics, such as breath support, stop cracking when singing high notes, siren or slider, exercise for man to hit the high notes, and so on. Your show has transformed me into a real singer; but need a personal couch to guide me closely. Keep that up; cause when you release some new videos i feel like there is something new to learn, though it's something that you have taught before. Peace, I'm out.

Ken, there is a biological way to increase your range. Especially if your older. I cant go into detail but the base is high dose Vitamin C and Coligan. When your old you become brittle, tight ect. This is a must and very noticeable difference. Without Vitimin C Coligan suffers inside your body. There are other things but like I said i cant go into detail. A lot of once great rock singers that lost their range would greatly benefit from this and other filter organ cleansing protocols with the high dose V-C and Coligan as a pivotal point.

Hi Ken, huge fan here of your videos. So I had a gig this Saturday night and leading up to it for weeks, my voice was not working. My vocal chords seemed to be really dry and something was on them. Like a light layer of mucus. I really thought I was going to have to cancel the show. I sing about 40 songs in a night, most are high powered arena rock, Bruno Mars, journey,, Disco, Michael Jackson ect...
Anyway...I ended up saving the day by using super hot water with lemon juice and tons of honey straight from the bottle...along with some apple cider vinegar. All that cleared my voice up almost 100%. I really think the water being hot was key. Normal water that I was drinking by the gallons daily didn't work. So it was more than a hydration problem.
Anyway, I also used a throat product ( singers )you listed on a video and that helped as well.
My band is The Florida Hit Machine. You the man!

Hydration is important, But make sure you get high dose Vitiman C and collagen spread out during each day. Without vitamin C the body doesnt make much collagen. This will keep your vocal chords strong and flexible. Also EPA's . Big tip... DO NOT eat or drink any dairy such as Milk or cheese a day before and day of performing. Right now my drinking Diet is based on water, teas and juices. And learning how to beatbox did change the way I eat and drink.
But do you know what. Singers are also people. They smoke, drink alcohol. Which I don't do (I saw people becoming ruins cuz of it.)
But I think opera singers take care of their voices (in fact one role has to singers. So they get enough time to rest the voice without stopping the show.) You know Ken made a very good Video about the singers diat.
      Ok. Here is a rule.
