Not affiliated with Chris or compensated in anyway, but Chris's "Discover your voice" course is fantastic. Starts a bit slow, but he takes the time to properly set the foundation up. Moved me past a lot of throat tightness and proper inhalation/placement issues I couldn't seem to solve even with IRL lesson teachers.
I also took the course. As valuable as the material was, the real value was Chris. Some of my questions leaned towards nutsville but Chris never wavered and did his best to answer them. I think Chris could do a live stream answering questions and make a few noises here and there, and people would pay for it. I know I would. Well, don't do the live stream on Super Bowl night :)
I too have been enrolled in Chris's courses for a couple of months and love his way of teaching. He really does break things down into these small skill sets that really begin to come together. I love how he takes every question asked head on and with kindness and uses them as learning experiences for all who witness or hear his answer. Really great.
Now I can add “Nasally old man” to my Chris Liepe vault that also includes “dying cat”, “worried ghost”, “crow” , “cookie monster”, “Mickey and Goofy”, and many others. Thanks for the awesome examples that really make it easy to understand the concepts!
Notes to help me retain info -warning signs: mucous buildup and hoarseness -hoarseness is usually from swelling from using too much air through primary cords - balance support with airflow moderation/compression - exercise: "if you feel, you will heal" Place "if" nasally, then hold back air/compress and let it leak through. Almost hold back too much air. Nasally old man sound. Start extreme then back it off. Play around with it! - uses a lot of ee vowel, but you can play around with opening it up Thanks Chris you rock 🤘
The last time I got hoarseness was very long ago when I did not know how to scream or sing in high pitch. I used to use my neck a lot and that led to straining much. Todays, I have been screaming alost everyday without hurting at all thank to Chris. The “the discover your voice” really helps me know the feel when I do it right. Before learning this muscle memory, I spent a significant amount of time on singing the part repeatedly until I found that spot. Now, I can do it without even thinking about that. Again, Thank you, Chris.
Loved the video. Used to take vocal lessons for a year, but now have to learn by myself. Everytime I started recording, about an hour into recording, my vocals get kinda hoarse and hitchy when singing. Definitely will try this and hope it helps me.
I've got a mild cold at the moment and a deadline to meet for a high note on my band's new song (for release next month), I will practice this tomorrow morning and see if I can hit it without hurting my throat as I did on the early rehearsals Thanks to you I was able to finally scream without losing my voice on the 2nd song, great lessons
Okay Chris! The Lord put you in my path. You are exactly what I've been looking for. I would love a one-on-one, but I didn't find the website to be very user-friendly. Anyway, I have been needing a warm up that will help me make an octave jump seamless. This will help. Thank you. Changes my whole dynamic when singing.. Thank you
Im finding your videos super helpful, even when it’s “just” learning about what it is I’m doing. It’s great to be able to put what the voice feels like into words. Also your screaming videos have been the next step for me. Thank you!
Been improving my singing for a year now and am seeing some major differences even though I am still insecure and often times think it doesn't sound great when it does xD but my voice gets hoarse afterwards. So, thank you, Chris! Gonna check this out after work. :)
The synchronicity of this with the fact that I've been messing with these types of sounds is priceless which is also in large part thanks to your video on how to sing like Chris Cornell. You have been an essential part of my attempts at singing. Thank you truly.
Fascinating. I suffered from this for years when our band PA was bad, I could barely hear my monitors and my guitarist was too loud. About 2 years ago, we switched to a silent stage setup and for the first time in years I could actually hear myself...I was suddenly able to sing a 4 hour gig with no problems! I just didn't need to push as hard or sing as loud to hear myself and it made the world of difference,
Jason Cabral no guitar amps, we have 2 guitarist and we both use Headrush modellers running straight to the mixer. Our bass player runs direct to the desk with a bass DI unit and our drummer uses electric drums. I also play keyboards which are plugged straight into the desk. We monitor with in ears. The only sound you will hear on stage is the drummer hitting the pads! I have a Presonus Studiolive 32 digital mixer that remembers all our settings and a Turbosound column array PA system that's lightweight and sets up in minutes. I can turn the entire band up or down with one fader! The entire band can setup in about 10 mins. We never need to soundcheck, cause nothing ever changes. The mixer has a virtual soundcheck mode that I use for tweaking the main eq but that's pretty much it. The other benefit is you get much more room on stage, so it's great for smaller venues!
@@officialWWM that's crazy. Really I'm a guitar player who's learning to sing. My amp is so important to me. Still, I haven't played live singing. As a guitar player I'm sensitive to what the singer hears and the levels of the band. I always felt like a ...conductor that way??? Listening to all the sounds. The old stories you hear about Johnny Ramone too loud for Joey and Joe Perry overpowering Steven Tyler are idiotic to me. I've heard way too many punk bands that just sound like..yeah sawmills. Sounds like you have a system really dialed in which I totally respect.
Jason Cabral it's taken me a lot of years and literally thousands of gigs to arrive at this point. Pre Covid, we were playing 4 nights a week, sometimes twice on Sundays. We needed a system that is quick to setup, easy to transport and sounds consistent and great. There's some great gear out there these days and there's never been a better time to be a live musician but it does require an open mind. Would I rather use a valve amp? Sure but the Headrush is pretty damn good, a lot more consistent sounding at any volume and a thousand times more reliable! Load amps might endure the player has a great time but digital technology ensures EVERYONE in the room has a great time! Our approach is about what's best for the band and audience, not any individual. My drummer hates electric drums too but he plays them, cause they work and frankly, sound great!
As a vocalist, this actually helped me to make my voice feel better for some reason! I had a very hoarse voice for a while and I didn't know why until I watched this video. Since masks are enforced in my school it made it harder to breathe more controllably and I had to breathe in more air which in a result got my voice sorer and sorer. Thanks to you, I am singing more often and longer! Also I'm not totally sure but I have a bit of grit and distortion as well as some higher pitches mixed :D. Keep making these videos! You deserve more!!
Oh wow that makes so much sense. I would find myself ok enough if I sang softly in my head voice but if I went lower and/or added more power, my voice dies so fast and I just feel so tight and can't talk 😅 thanks for this!
I gotta thank you because now it's fun to practice! Before watching your vids I was so embarrased by how I sounded while finding my voice Now I can have a good laugh, embracing every step of my process, even though I might sound akward at times "If you feel, you will heal"
I already am the old guy and this gives me permission to work it. I've been trying so hard to smooth it out and instead I wind up with the Neanderthal mucus voice. Thanks for this. I'll play with it and add it to my tool kit that I'm getting from you.

I’ve been having a lot of mucus build up in my throat for like a month and I think I have to wait until it’s healed and it’s really been bothering me because I know it’s not normal. Thanks for uploading this I’ll try it when I think I’m healed. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated:)
Over many years I have learned to really limit allowing air to blow by the vocal folds. Essentially you blow dry them. Not a good thing. I'd rather squeeze than flow uncontrolled air through them.
Hey Chris! Have you heard of Nothing But Thieves? It'd be sick to have a vocal breakdown of Conor, their singer, he's mad versatile and really really expressive. Would love to hear your take on him!
Well I freaking never. Squeezing the "if" out gave a weird sounding yet very comfortable feeling crackling in my voice. I think I just found the distortion button to work around with.
Hey, Chris! I'm here to make a request for next vocal analysis. Welp, this one might not be a best pick in terms of content-creatorship, but anyway. It's Manuel Karamori, an ex Super Eurobeat singer. I was inspired to sing listening to him. He kinda has a pretty high pitched clean scream voice that I'm still confused about. Please, observe his techniques in a variety of Eurobeat songs all over youtube. There's also Madman titled song that's not on RUclips, but found easily within Deezer or other such platforms.
So.. i was in a band for all of high school and part of college, i played bass but me and my friends played and were at shows every weekend. I love music and metal. I played guitar and sang on my own but was never great. So about 3 months ago i was feeling like i needed something exciting, a new hobbie and i saw lorna shores new song to the hellfire and have screamed in the past but new was any good and ALWAYS wished i could..Sooooo I started my journey into trying to learn how to scream, it was baaaaad at first. I practiced every day for like 10-15 min in the car and didnt notice progress for like a month when everything clicked. And i was trying the same song over and over till i got it perfect. And i got it. I can now match several metal songs (screaming) in different styles moderately proficiently. However i also want to learn to sing well, for example killswitch engage-end of heartache when he sings “seek me”.. the ME part, i was finally starting to be able to hit it and between that and screaming. (I got a nice speaker and wireless microphone) I keep going on these long singing/screaming nights on my weekends and i love it. But now my voice keeps going horse, and i mean BAD, my dad asked what happened to my voice, and i wanted to take a week off and screwed up and sang/screamed last night. But it was to the point where even my talking voice, i can say anything with excitement bc the top 20-30% of my vocal range. Am i screwed?
Hey Chris, thanks for you videos ! My classical singing coach almost told me the opposite, ie she would have me sing the more freely possible, not with too much air but not holding back either. Rather having this kind of « it flows without resistance » like it is done with no effort. What do you think about that ? I’ve experimented both but I can’t find where the truth is
It totally depends on WHERE you are creating the resistance. It is TOTALLY possible to create resistance/hold back air that competes and messes with your cords. But if you do it in the way I'm showing in this video, it works really well and adds all sorts of nice textures!
Hi Chris, I've been told I've a bit of Hiatus and was gave only 1 exercise to get better cord closure. Could make a tutorial for people like me? I get hoarse in two seconds... Or would you recommend me to go see a speech therapist or something like that? This video restored my voice today :D thank you!
Speech therapy would b where you want to start. I actually have a module based on speech therapy in my course Discover Your Voice. you can request an invitation at chrisliepe.com :)
Now it’s not about how much air you push through the vocal folds. It’s about the air pressure on the vocal folds. When I was trying to find my whistle register, I got hoarse even though I leaked just a tiny bit of the air - because I overpushed the air from my diafragm onto my almost totally closed vocal folds. The air pressure is the key, not the air flow through them. These are close and often related things, but they aren’t the same
I’ve got rehearsal in two weeks for my first band whilst recovering from being sick, this video is quite helpful but I can’t reach the ranges I used to before I became sick, I’m not sure what to do 😭
As usual, Chris, I can watch your videos a hundred times and on number a hundred and one, learn something new. In this video, you embraced the old nasal man and used the following statement for moderating your air flow, “holding back”. Hmm, how does Chris hold back air, I thought? For me, I Inhale, and on exhale I hold back air and at times I may even hold my breath. You seem to be holding back air in your throat or is the way I do it, the same way you do it. If not, can you explain the difference. Thanks
There's lots of different ways to create resistance in the "throat" or vocal tract. You might be (if not already in) interested in this course? www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
@@chrisliepe Thanks for the comment, Chris. I'm not too keen on this style of singing (based on the videos you used as demos) so I don't want to take a whole course on Aggressive singing to learn one concept. Can't afford it...sorry.....I was hoping you had a video on youtube that best explains it. I also think there is room to learn compression and air management that can help us singers who are not into heavy metal screaming, vocal fry, false cord fry and all that stuff. So please do a course on compression that leans towards the contemporary rock and roll style that isn't about screaming or fries (sorry If I'm using the wrong terms). I think all of us would love to learn your air management style, but to enjoy the course, one would have to enjoy the style of singing used in the course.
Hey Chris! I was trying to sing like Rob Zombie and now my voice is hoarse😆 Do you you think you could do a "Sing Like Rob Zombie"? He just has a massive vocal sound and I can't nail what he's doing under the hood. Thanks for all the vocal tips and videos. Its helped me immensely. Happy holidays✌
Hello Chris!!! I have a question for you, do you have any suggestions to me to avoid getting hoarse in air condition room? My workplace giving me a problem a week ago and my voice get hoarse and i cant sing above f4. I dont know what to do😟 Btw thank you for all your efforts senpai I really enjoyed every content you made. So in return i just like evry vids u uploaded and continue to support even though i cant afford your course xD ❤️❤️
My comment below on holding back air and Chris's comment in this video about holding back air in your false cord area is a game changer. I love 90% of Chris's videos. There is one style of singing I'm not a fan of. Chris would probably call it aggressive singing. I hear a lot of screaming, fry, distortion and I was never a fan of this style. Chris' course on aggressive singing along with the video styles demoing this style is why I decided not to take the course. But I believe there is a recipe in this style that will help with compression and holdiing back air (singing above the primary cords or what is called false cords) is not something I understand, but I think it is key. I don't even know how it feels when you are holding back air above your primary cords, let alone how to do it. I can't find any video that shows how this concept is done. My gut says it will be one of the videos on aggressive style. CHRIS, IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OF Your VIDEOS THAT BEST EXPLAINS HOW ONE FEELS OR DOES THE CONCEPT OF HOLDING BACK AIR ABOVE THEIR VOCAL CORDS, IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. I am going to take the 365 class but it will be a few months away when I have the cash. Thanks for all you do, Chris.
I never scream or screech. I just sing. I think I have the potential to sing so much better than I do now. But I get sore after singing an hour or so, this keeps me from singing a full gig.. So how can I fix this so I can sing full gigs? I went to an ear nose throat guy last year. He said my throat was irritated but nothing actually wrong no nodes or anything actually physically wrong. So what to do to get from one hour of singing, to singing full 3-4 hour gigs? I need to fix this fast and soon.
I keep watching these videos because im supposed to start singing at my church and half way through every time I realize i don't want to sound anything like this 🤣
At 11:09 you managed to flip from a compressed chest note to head voice. I can’t figure out how to do that for the life of me! I have to decompress and then flip, so it sounds more like a transition than a gear switch or voice crack. Do you think my head/chest just aren’t strong enough yet and i need more practice? Does this mean I’m compressing incorrectly? 😳
How should or does air flow moderation above the larynx affect the shape of the pharynx? I’ve been training to maintain the sensation of a passive and open throat, in order to prevent hoarseness causes by the swallowing muscles. Thank you
It should function independently from the nasopharyngeal passage. It’s lower and should be thought of as such. Smack dab in between primary phonation and the sensations associated with that and the back of tongue and soft palate.
What if there's not any pain but it's just kinda weaker than normal Like it gradually gets quieter and there's less sound for the amount of effort invested Is that just fatigue? Should I just take a break lol
So that's why my hoarseness seem random. Sometimes I sound like I'm a horror movie protagonist when recording and be fine the next day. Other times I'm singing right at my comfortable vocal range but still lose my voice
Not affiliated with Chris or compensated in anyway, but Chris's "Discover your voice" course is fantastic. Starts a bit slow, but he takes the time to properly set the foundation up. I’ve been having a lot of mucus build up in my throat for like a month and I think I have to wait until it’s healed and it’s really been bothering me because I know it’s not normal. Thanks for uploading this I’ll try it when I think I’m healed. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated:)
Dear Santa Chris, all I want for Christmas is a video lesson on Steven Tyler's style😁
Over many years I have learned to really limit allowing air to blow by the vocal folds. Essentially you blow dry them. Not a good thing. I'd rather squeeze than flow uncontrolled air through them.
Exactly!
@VIDEOHEREBOB What would be your advices to limit air amount and increase cord closure?
Great idea!
So.. i was in a band for all of high school and part of college, i played bass but me and my friends played and were at shows every weekend. I love music and metal.
I played guitar and sang on my own but was never great.
So about 3 months ago i was feeling like i needed something exciting, a new hobbie and i saw lorna shores new song to the hellfire and have screamed in the past but new was any good and ALWAYS wished i could..Sooooo
I started my journey into trying to learn how to scream, it was baaaaad at first.
(I got a nice speaker and wireless microphone)
I keep going on these long singing/screaming nights on my weekends and i love it.
Thank u Chris . God bless you
Hey Chris, thanks for you videos !
You can do a video with all singing and vocal terms
I'm a pretty open person but LMAO I get what he is saying but this singing technique is too funny!
I’m signing up. I hope this doesn’t lead to another course I have to pay for them. Cause I’ll do it and with Christmas. I’m broke. Thank you for this.
You can buy stuff if you want or can. But enjoy the free content!! Dig in!
5:30 this exercise reminds me of practising violin with too much tension on the bow to produce that scratchy sound.
Can you do a video on how to sing like Kellin Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens?!
...visiting the father-in-law for Christmas... 6:23 🤣
hehe
Helo Chris. Can u please give some methods or daily tips you can eat/drink or do to heal vocal fatigue or smaller vocal injuries?
I covered these in my new workshops! Have you joined me free course yet?
These are close and often related things, but they aren’t the same
WOW! Chris does a really good impersonation of me @2:17 😂
haha
I’ve got rehearsal in two weeks for my first band whilst recovering from being sick, this video is quite helpful but I can’t reach the ranges I used to before I became sick, I’m not sure what to do 😭
This was very useful. Thank you. I'm going to embrace my nasally old man.
Wonderful!
9:26 "let's explore more range, by, *aaeeaaaghh*
My dad just shouted at my mom, and I started shouting too, so now I have a super hoarse voice.
I got hoarsnes sound after practicing the corey taylor technuiqe which ie not really a technuiqe its just throat distortion so thanks chris
Right! You should check out my recent videos on Corey Taylor... Should help you a lot!
@@chrisliepe ok thanks!
Hello Chris!!! I have a question for you, do you have any suggestions to me to avoid getting hoarse in air condition room? My workplace giving me a problem a week ago and my voice get hoarse and i cant sing above f4. I dont know what to do😟
Btw thank you for all your efforts senpai
I really enjoyed every content you made.
I keep watching these videos because im supposed to start singing at my church and half way through every time I realize i don't want to sound anything like this 🤣
Vowel modification..👍👍
Is it normal to get hoarse during specifically false chord growls?
nope... not normal. You can use less air (or learn to) and not get hoarse!
“Embrace the nasally old man” 🤣🤣
Lmfaoooo I love how weird your teachings are 😂😂😂 it makes it fun
Thanks😇
Tool the pot vocal stem break down
Oh my
This is what Adele did in her world tour and then people jumped on her saying that she had a bad technique ☠️☠️
This happened to her in Paris because she had to sing very loud
What if there's not any pain but it's just kinda weaker than normal
Like it gradually gets quieter and there's less sound for the amount of effort invested
Is that just fatigue?
Should I just take a break lol
Yep, take a mental and physical break and come back with fresh inspiration!
@@chrisliepe Cool, Thanks:)
So that's why my hoarseness seem random. Sometimes I sound like I'm a horror movie protagonist when recording and be fine the next day. Other times I'm singing right at my comfortable vocal range but still lose my voice
