I see your first bet was to go with carb cleaner spray, my first choice as well when working on any component that may contain rubber gaskets or seals. Acetone as a second choice is also a good choice as it will not dissolve rubber, but prolonged exposure will degrade it. This isn't prolonged exposure so a good alternative. I definitely wouldn't go brake cleaner as much too corrosive for seals and gaskets only potentially lead to much bigger severe issues. Every cleaner has its place in our tool box, might be a show on that one as not many people understand the nuance of which product to use in what circumstance. Missed April this week, lets get her back on the vid soon it's nice to have a bit of banter between you two from time to time. I appreciate April asking the questions that some of us novices might have but afraid to ask ourselves. Bang on with the Old Milwaukee ugh! Love the channel, always look forward to catching the next episode.
i would imagine you didnt need to let it sit overnight. acetone evaporates very quickly so I'd say whatever it does it does it within a couple minutes. shooting acetone in there with a little syringe would probably work great. Cool video your right many don't know some carbs have those screens.
Hey Steve, thanks for the info. My chainsaw won't start and after cleaning out the carb, I found your video. Didn't know there might be a screen. Tore the carb open and found the screen. I can blow cleaner in thru the inlet elbow with no problem but I can't from the needle valve out the other way. Screen looks good but there is no joy! I'm going to leave the screen out and try that. Thanks for all the help you have given to us.
Acetone has a very high evaporation rate, in fact the highest of commonly available solvents. While it will "dissolve" all manner of "sticky" material (adhesives, deposited residues, etc) it evaporates so quickly that unless the released material is carried away by the flow of the solvent it can be redeposited as a thin film on the substrate. In the case of a filter or screen this may be enough to reduce the blockage but can accelerate re occurrence of the problem. Following an acetone application immediately with pressurized carb cleaner (most brands have acetone as well as slower acting solvents) will remove this remainder. You can see any residue removed this way by holding a white cloth over or near the exiting stream of cleaner
Good video Steve. I am dating myself but when i was younger Old Vienna and Henninger were the top two beers that sucked where i lived in Southern Ontario. As a side note, I use canned air (keyboard cleaner) to clean carb passages as followup to carb cleaner. Alot handier than an air compressor.
Love the little things. Not sure if in your field, maybe a link. Looking into a robot mower for my backyard. Disable vet with hip issues and getting old. I use my mower for small front yard but the back is too big for me. I’m running out of affordable kids in the neighborhood for the back. Thought or link on robot mower would be helpful.
I'm having a terrible time cleaning these chonda carbs (Australia) not sure what's in the fuel that makes it go crusty but after watching this i'll be trying some acetone next (needle and seat is the biggest problem, same for the Briggs and Stratton quantum carbs) i first thought you'd just poke a skewer through that screen but then realised it could just end up pushing in and blocking it worse.
Great secret info -I have a poor flow from tank to carb on lawn tractor .With all removed from tank to carb clear flow but not when reconnected -any ideas ???
Great information , but don't use the air hose on the gas inlet side , it will blow the needle seat out , then you are screwed , I learned the hard way
What happened to your daughter April? Another way to avoid using acetone is to convert to propane and never have to clean a carb again, .Have you made any progress on your upcoming propane conversion?
🤣🤣🤣 OLD MILWAUKEE ( MILL YUCKIE) Great advice Steve O , April may want a cut on that repair bill due to supplying the nail polish remover lol! Cheers 🍻 and Steve Out!
You didn't need to let it set overnight as acetone evaporates very quickly. The job was probably done in less than 10 minutes. Good to know acetone is safe for that though.
Old Milwaulkee is a great tasting beer, "BUT" only if it is fresh, and the bottle is better. The best beer I have ever had was a Qt. bottle of Old Milwaulkee that was fresh. It doesn't have a big turn over, so most gets old from the distributers before it gets to the store. And then, yes it sucks like "any" old beer. That's the whole story on IPA's the had a longer shelf life to make the long boat ride from England to the British in India. As with carburators "old" gas can mess them up. To me Michelob ULTRA tastes like dish water, sadly I do know what both taste like. So I fail to understand why anyone would drink Michelob ULTRA, but to each their own. As for the carburators, and all the engine tips, thanks.
Lmfao, hey Steve you need to save the kokes for the ending. I had to watch it twice cause the first time I was laugh all the way through it. Not that there's anything wrong with watching twice.
In Australia these damn little mud wasps put mud, spiders in suspended animation and baby wasp pupae into any engine left sitting around... my chainsaw was loaded all up under the throttle linkage, they also like to plug the little breather pipe on honda carbies... Cheers thanks Steve
So, being as acetone is flammable what would be your thoughts on dumping a bottle in to mix in your gas can as a cleaning agent? An example one bottle to a 5 gallon can.
Won't the acetone melt the plastic fuel inlets and needle valve seats? If it doesn't evaporate straight away. I have melted plastic with it; in fact this is a way to do plastic repair. Melt plastic in acetone and use as a plastic glue.

Curious cats wanna know what type of plastic would be used. In That interior barbed elbow, as acetone can react to chemically cured plastic types. Just wondering please don't reply. Just keep em coming, going, or flowin. T Y P
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Sorry, it's my English .. the elbow is 90 degrees and opened at both ends .. so to make a proper hole in that darn screen shouldn't be a problem .. its exact location can be measured with a piece of wire .. who the heck was such a smart guy anyway to put the filter in a place that can't be opened for cleaning ... 🤔

Your comment about Old Milwaukee beer made the whole video worthwhile. We used to drive over the border to get good " real" beer.
Not much for Anheuser-Busch products anymore as well
Steve you need to get some shiner bock on your shelf

HAY STEVE where's April ??? Haha thanks for the information. Cheers brother. 🍻
I laughed out loud at the Old Milwaukee comment. I couldn't agree more, lol! Cheers from Calgary.
Right on
When I saw the OM beer I was thinking to myself "I cannot believe he's drinking OM..." Your comment was timely and perfect! LOL

Is it worth mentioning the rubber "o" ring "needle seat " where the needle seats...being blown away ?
No you will figure it out 😢
Yep that was my problem! Thank you 😎

Steve, thank you for taking the time to make these useful videos. And like you I agree it is important to stay hydrated after work as well. 👌
You're Welcome...
1:12 “And by the way, Old Milwaukee’s beer pairs really nicely with carburetor cleaning. Because they both suck!” 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

No problem 👍
Better put April's nail polish remover back before she finds out you're using it in the shop!
OOPS! Thank You...
THX, great info. appreciate your channel! always relaxing to watch and learn. 😊
Our pleasure!
That was very interesting

I found it hilarious that you possibly thought that Old Milwaukee might be good beer! Beast Ice is the way to go for getting hammered on a budget!
You are right, plus Carb Cleaner and Old Milwaukee pretty much tastes the same too
Great tip!!
Glad you think so!
Always helpful
Glad to hear that!
lolll hard to trust an Old Milwaukee's drinker but if you say that sucks,,, I'll give you confidence loll !
Good continuation !!!
Old Mil. The beer of my youth growing up in Northern Wisconsin. It was cheap and it was beer!
Agreed!

Please talk about the little screens and welch plugs in 2-stroke carbs. I don't think many people understand them.
these ones are not hidden, rrreally obvious to see n clean !!!
Thanks Stevo. I never knew about that sneaky little fella being in there 👌👍

You can also blow the screen out the other way on some, apparently.
We use to call Old Milwaukee Old Mil-Yuckie! 😂🍺 Todd from da Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
👍👍👍Thanks
Welcome 👍
Will the acetone damage the rubber needle seat?
I’m glad you didn’t run your beer through the carb!
Just an FYI, acetone will soften many plastics and can destroy some rubber gasket materials.
What happened to your daughter April? Another way to avoid using acetone is to convert to propane and never have to clean a carb again, .Have you made any progress on your upcoming propane conversion?
Daughter 🤣😂🤣😂 Nice one .
Combustion chamber conditioner can also clean carburetors when left to soak.
Can the Gen start if the screen is broken?
lol old Milwaukee beer pairs well
Would you say acetone works better than carb cleaner?
yes
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon I may try cleaning a carburetor with it one time and see how it does
Another great video,Donyboy73 did a video while back on this I think it was a Briggs carburetor.

YUMMY!

Right on buddy! Thank You...
I would take a length of fuel line hose- put it on the inlet barb- then put acitone in the hose and prop it up and let it soak 🤔
In Australia these damn little mud wasps put mud, spiders in suspended animation and baby wasp pupae into any engine left sitting around... my chainsaw was loaded all up under the throttle linkage, they also like to plug the little breather pipe on honda carbies... Cheers thanks Steve
Thumbs up for knowing what we know in Wisconsin: Old Milwaukee sucks.
Thank You...
So, being as acetone is flammable what would be your thoughts on dumping a bottle in to mix in your gas can as a cleaning agent? An example one bottle to a 5 gallon can.
Keep in mind, acetone will soften plastic.
Not ALL plastic!
that'll likely cause serious pre-ignition (knocking)
@Steve's Small Engine Saloon true. But it will eat up a screwdriver handle. Don't ask me how I know
Won't the acetone melt the plastic fuel inlets and needle valve seats? If it doesn't evaporate straight away. I have melted plastic with it; in fact this is a way to do plastic repair. Melt plastic in acetone and use as a plastic glue.
the last carb problem my family had was that little 90 degree plastic barb fitting was cracked.
I thought you were gonna say that Old Still beer was good for soaking carbs, since it will rot your gut!
Beginning of video Steve says, Milwaukee's Best beer sucks. End of video, Steve says, cheers and drinks it. As long as it's beer, drink it?
How can I ask question and get answer?

Guess I've never seen a screen on one , or never looked for it .
You can tell Steve's shot carb cleaner in his eyes before. ;-]
OUCH!
I hope you didn't steal that nail polish remover from April...
They both suck 😂😂 great one there Steve
Doesn’t carb spray swell and damage the rubber seat that the needle contacts!
Depends on the brand! They are not all the same..
And we all know that every manly man of a mechanic should have a little "nail polish remover" on hand. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink
I stole it from my daughter! Dont tell her....
They both suck 🤣🤣 Nice video Steve, I always learn something. Thanks
Right on Mikey! You're Welcome...
Whats wrong with Old Milwaukee Beer?
OMG because they both Suck !! I almost fell out of my chair laughing.
LOL! Right on
OM’s😊
We call it old kill dogee.
Old Mule beer....
The "Walbro" 2-Stroke Carboretors" have these as well, but Steve never addresses how to replace them.
Sure did!
👍🏻🍻
Acetone you say .. overnight .. and you really didn't have any temptation just to drill this hole thru?! .. somehow I doubt it :))
