  • The Good Friday Agreement brought republicans and unionists together after decades of violent political conflict in Northern Ireland.
The historic peace treaty effectively established a cross-community consensus around peace and the future direction of the region.
However, though the agreement put an end to The Troubles, the accord has still faced difficulties over the years.
So what is this major peace treaty? And how did it come to be?
Independent TV‘s Decomplicated series explains the Good Friday Agreement.

Good story, but I would have liked to have heard more about the steps toward peace before the final agreement. How about a sequel?

    I hate to see
countries fighting one another but is especially heartbreaking to see brother vs. brother! The troubles were one of the reasons I started to doubt my Christian faith. When Christian fought Christian it made no sense to see how God was so weak.

It was never about religion in the end. It was about land, nationality & the past trauma.

You know why they're mentioning this? Because of the recent security issues in Ireland with the troubles returning. Something's cooking

Probably is a mixture between the following:
      1. 25th anniversary of the GFA
      2. In the last NI elections in May 2022, Sinn Féin was the most voted political party, being the first republican party to have most votes in a general election.
      3. Since then, the unionist party, DUP, has been blocking the formation of the government.
      4. Brexit is having terrible consequences in the UK, and the republicans were against leaving the EU.
All of these give the perfect combination for things escalating.
