    I live in Mobile, Al as well and am just getting into the beautiful heritage roses like DA. I planted everything in large pots and customer service at DA told me I'd have to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. My pots are too big , too heavy, and too many(30) to lug around the yard to find protected areas and I can see you have a number of roses in pots also. We don't have prolonged hard freezes often, but I was wondering how you handle the protection of the roots on your potted roses in our area during the winter. We live in a relatively mild winter climate most of the time, so it didn't dawn on me to worry about protecting the roots. By the way, your roses are beautiful. Thanks.

      I have been growing them for years and never protect my roses in pot. As you said, our winter are generally mild, there is no need to protect the pot. I love DA roses and find that it is really rewarding to grow them (especially the older DA varieties) in our area. ❤️

      I did the same thing this spring... I bought too many, put a lot of them in pots, and then started to worry about winter. But I wouldn't worry about winterizing them in Mobile, Alabama UNLESS it gets near 10F or below. Maybe then wrap them up in blankets. Luckily that kind of cold is very rare in Mobile. Some say below 20 F, but David Austin's are generally bred to handle zone 4 and 5. I wouldn't touch them unless it's forecast to get 10° or below.

    I also grow mine around an obelisk thanks to your advice 😊 It is a bare root from DA this past Spring. Good to know about defoliating if necessary. Thanks Seng! Did not realize the black spot would come during transitions, but makes sense! I am using the MG liquid now, every 2weeks, and every rose is happier 😍

    Gorgeous rose! I wonder if I should peg the long canes of this rose horizontally or train them around an upright support?
    I imagine it would eventually fill out nicely once established.

    • @backyardparadise2334
      @backyardparadise2334  2 года назад +1

      You can definitely do that. This rose is versatile for how you want it to be shaped as long as you give it some support for the soft cane

    My Abraham Darby Rose in more than 10 years old and in a very bad condition.There is just one old stem left with a side branch. Maybe I did the cutting wrong. There are only a few blooms every year. The plant lives in the ground. What do you suggest to do to save it? Should I cut it down and wait for another year?
