I live in Mobile, Al as well and am just getting into the beautiful heritage roses like DA. I planted everything in large pots and customer service at DA told me I'd have to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. My pots are too big , too heavy, and too many(30) to lug around the yard to find protected areas and I can see you have a number of roses in pots also. We don't have prolonged hard freezes often, but I was wondering how you handle the protection of the roots on your potted roses in our area during the winter. We live in a relatively mild winter climate most of the time, so it didn't dawn on me to worry about protecting the roots. By the way, your roses are beautiful. Thanks.
I have been growing them for years and never protect my roses in pot. As you said, our winter are generally mild, there is no need to protect the pot. I love DA roses and find that it is really rewarding to grow them (especially the older DA varieties) in our area. ❤️
I did the same thing this spring... I bought too many, put a lot of them in pots, and then started to worry about winter. But I wouldn't worry about winterizing them in Mobile, Alabama UNLESS it gets near 10F or below. Maybe then wrap them up in blankets. Luckily that kind of cold is very rare in Mobile. Some say below 20 F, but David Austin's are generally bred to handle zone 4 and 5. I wouldn't touch them unless it's forecast to get 10° or below.
Thank you for showing the whole plant and how you support/trained him. Mine is one year and leggy. I always wondered how it is done. :) very beautiful plant.
I also grow mine around an obelisk thanks to your advice 😊 It is a bare root from DA this past Spring. Good to know about defoliating if necessary. Thanks Seng! Did not realize the black spot would come during transitions, but makes sense! I am using the MG liquid now, every 2weeks, and every rose is happier 😍
Yes!! I am so happy with your success with Abraham Darby. This makes my heart sing!! 🥰🥰 I observed its growing habit and many of my DA roses for 2 to 3 seasons and this is the conclusion I got. It is almost like a predictable cycle...🥰🥰
Gorgeous rose! I wonder if I should peg the long canes of this rose horizontally or train them around an upright support? I imagine it would eventually fill out nicely once established.
Love Abraham Darby! His first bloom wowed me for sure! How do you maintain your lawn with all the pots on it? Am thinking of doing more pots but not sure how to mow the lawn😅
My Abraham Darby Rose in more than 10 years old and in a very bad condition. There is just one old stem left with a side branch. Maybe I did the cutting wrong. There are only a few blooms every year. The plant lives in the ground. What do you suggest to do to save it? Should I cut it down and wait for another year?
I like to watch your video because you explain very well. May I know what’s your top ten? It’s very difficult for me to make decisions. I ordered 7 roses from David Austin. I spent a lot of time to study. I also changed 2times already. It’s ok because they are shipped next year.
Thanks you. Top 10 DA (still available for sale at DA) will be Spirit of freedom Abraham darby The Poet's wife James Galway Strawberry Hill Huntington Lady of Shalott Bishop Castle The dark lady Heathcliff
You have inspired me growing roses in pots. Thanks for all your videos
That makes my heart so happy to hear that. Hope those roses are doing good in the pot for you. 🥰
Your video is great! Thanks for sharing! I am a big fan of your channel. Warm greetings from Germany! Have a wonderful time my friend 💜💜💜💜💜👍
@nami-vlog Thank you so much for your support. It really warm my heart. Really motivating me to make more video. ❤️
Wow, yours looked amazing. Hopefully the incoming summer will get my Abraham to its greatness ~
Right! And this is the bloom under high heat. Still so gorgeous!

@@backyardparadise2334 good to know!
I ordered it based on your recommendation on one of your comparison videos. I am looking forward to this beauty. Thanks.
Can't go wrong with Abraham Darby. Must have in every rose garden.
Absolutely gorgeous!
Gorgeous rose! I wonder if I should peg the long canes of this rose horizontally or train them around an upright support?
I imagine it would eventually fill out nicely once established.
You can definitely do that. This rose is versatile for how you want it to be shaped as long as you give it some support for the soft cane
@@backyardparadise2334 Thank you.
Lovely ❤️
i really like how u trained abraham into that tree structure, i will have to try that. people grow thisnone as a climber in my area.
Yes. It can be trained as a short climber. I just love how it form this umbrella looks and the bloom droop down beautiful
@@backyardparadise2334 yes, u did a beautiful job there!
Gorgeous
Thank you for saying they look like sh*t when they go dormant. They really do and it can freak you out that it’s dying.
Lol!! They all do. 😆😆😆
How can one describe this rose without even mentioning its strong amazing fragrance?
How would it do in Illinois? 5B region? The exposure will be sunny south and it would live in a pot on a balcony.
Thank you in advance!
Thank you i was worried about putting mine in a pot
Hi absolutely love your vids. Have you grown Evelyn and if so, how does it compare to Abraham Darby? Thanks!!
Yes. I have Evelyn. It is not a fan of heat and humidity at all. Abraham Darby is better for the heat. 😊
Love Abraham Darby! His first bloom wowed me for sure! How do you maintain your lawn with all the pots on it? Am thinking of doing more pots but not sure how to mow the lawn😅
I didn't maintain it myself. I have a landscaper to maintain it...😆😆
I should have guessed! Will need to talk to my in-house landscaper😂
Very beautiful rose! 💕How much sun does this rose need? Partial sun or full sun? What fertilizer do you feed the roses? Please share.
Full sun and I used Miracle gro once every 2 weeks
@@backyardparadise2334 Thank you so much!❤️
