- Quiet and somewhat direction-less, Alfred Polly uses the money he inherits from his father to marry and to set up shop in a small town. His heart is in neither of these enterprises and he eventually resorts to desperate measures to break free. His random wanderings in the countryside lead him to a new opportunity that just might be what he's been looking for all along.

Such a wonderful movie. John Mills was so talented.

Made in 1948 and I can hear every word clearly. Films/dramas on TV made with modern equipment and played on modern sound systems...I have to put the subtitles on because the actors mumble and/or the 'background' music is way off balance and drowns the actors out..
It's because many of the old time actors studied elocution at school and later at the Roya Academy at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts to perform mainly in theatre where one's voice had to "carry" to the back of the theatre. Unfortunately, with film current actors may "mumble" b/c of body microphones, etc. making it unnecessary to speak as clearly. My opinion!

I agree. Can never understand a word they’re saying.
So I'm not losing my hearing OR MY MIND. Yes, the sound tracks on these older films are generally much clearer than on the new stuff.

We read this book at school in the 1950s. It is worth a glance even today.
Especially today. I am sonetimes just nowled over by how MANY great films were made back in the day. Just whenI think I must ve running out of decent movies. I mean, how many days and nights can a perdon watch mobies and did o et a while rw febre, a while new branch, a trove.of more good films. Thank God. We need tgem now!?
Another British film good cast
I love looking at decor and furnishings. My poor gran lived in a flat stuck in the poorest class level of the 40s but I loved it. Lino, gas meter. Filed down half pennies to fake shillings in gas meter, players weights in packets of five for a shilling, bread and dripping or sugar, lovely. No mod cons, outside loo. Later on in 60s, TV you put sixpence in the slot to watch for an hour or so. Scruffy old furniture. So simple and so easy.
With the indoor gas meters a shilling was of course required for use. When emptied by gas man once he got the required amount the few shillings left over came to my Mum. She would be delighted to exchange with her next door neighbour the returns they each got. A big day for both of them. I don't think they ever thought of filing down a half penny. Those were the days. At least we had our country to ourselves, not like now.
Watched this brilliant film many times, John mills top of the tree, buried in Denham next to his home. His daughter played the little girl another fine actress..

This is my first time seeing this and enjoying it very much. The Time Machine is one of my favorites!! I love the old British movies as well. I guess you could say it's a young love. Have only watched them a little over a year now.
We were Boomers with his girls, H & J, and they were our introduction to the British sweetness and a special loveliness in their films.
Was Juliet the little girl, Polly, in the film?
Saw Juliet and Hayley in a double hander at the Sheffield Theatre Royal I think it was, in 1991. Wonderful gals, beautiful historic theatre, gilded carvings all around the upper balcony, Velvet curtains - just like a movie set. (Thankyou for taking me, Aunty Margaret ❤)

My dad did a Mr Polly, but he did it at 17. Left England on a boat for Australia in 1948, and transformed his life completely. Takes courage and good sense (plan ahead a bit), not many have both these things...perhaps.
This was the book I had to read for my GCE so know it word for word!!

Superb film!
This is one of my favourite films. There were two issues the film couldn't address. Firstly, Mr. Polly and his wife needed to be childless in order for us to keep our sympathy for him. It would have been beyond the pale for him to run out on young children. Secondly , as Alfred can't get a divorce without revealing that he's still alive, he'll have to "live in sin" with the Innkeeper but this means that the film isn't able to directly show that their relationship is more than platonic.

If you are tired of your life change it. Excellent film based on an early Wells mainly driven by the energy of John Mills with a nice little cameo by Finlay Currie.

In the 1950's this was the "O" Level Exam book for English Literature.

I read the novel way back in 1976 or so as an English major, which looking back seemed an odd choice considering Wells' influence on sci-fi. But a good adaptation, although overall I prefer KIPPS with Michael Redgrave. Sally Ann Howes was quite the beauty at that age!
