Excellent - completely unexpected based on the first ten minutes. Alastair Sim was a national treasure - I don't know if he ever put in a bad performance. I love UK home front films, and Gainsborough Pictures should be better known to cinephiles.

Superb. It kept on building the tension. George Cole was amazing from the moment he appeared at the wheel of the evacuees bus to the hall of mirrors. A little impenetrable at times but great fun over all. John Mills gave a really electric performance, seemingly cool as a cucumber at all times and switching the energy to end up fighting like a cornered rat. Sim as the undercover man was great to watch. Excellent!

Continuity Trivia: Marguerite is taking off her riding gloves and in the next few frames has them on again. She appears in a dress when Ronald and Mr. Inventor are outside talking to Evans, and then she's back in her riding habit when Ronald knocks into the suit of armor.
I love this movie, bought a copy, and have watched it countless times. In one very early "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" episode, the boys (David and Ricky) are watching tv and the dialogue, from the scene where Dimble and Marguerite are talking about her painting, is audible from their 'tv'! I thought that was a very sophisticated touch, but Ozzie was a genius. Once one has heard that scene, never forgotten.

@peacenow42 I don't believe that it's our responsibility to show you how or when to understand the value of life. It's not our responsibility to show how a person can assume that role or empower themselves to be more than what is expected. It's the wrong question, and the question should be what can I do or create that would show the conviction of your sacrifice? Doing what is expected is not worth more than a pat on the back for contributing to your community. To openly say or announce your contributions is not humble or righteous, it's called bragging. I don't know if anyone has explained to you the difference but thank you for stepping up and assuming the responsibility of teaching. I wouldn't call that anything special but I guess that's the difference. We or our generation always took that role as our God given right to protect and defend our children. Yes I would include education as a value that needs to be shown and experienced as a community, when you don't have two parents at home. Anyway the path is and always will be clear to all of us willing to assume or become more than what is expected. We who have God in our lives are used to having only him to give us the strength and courage or wisdom. Those who choose not to be part of God light or mercy will always try to get thier recognition from those people that are not able to understand your motives or intent. I will givebyou the benefit of doubt and just believe you don't understand. FYI good job, now do it without anyone knowing or giving your recognition to feed your pride. It sounds like you might have a course to follow I just hope it's not for your self gratification. Just my opinion since you wanted everyone to know your Victor

@peacenow42 I'm sorry you feel that way. I was merely pointing out an observation. Today for example I observed how many of out younger generation will be forced to join the military through the congress as a draft. I feel that's a step in the right direction . The week minded parents that raised these children have done a disservice to our country....anyway that my man is a rant. Good luck...your going to need it..cheers

What an interesting film...very richly textured, with a lot going on. I don't think I've ever seen so many doors opening and closing in such a short time. And good acting throughout, with Alasdair Sims stealing the show; completely believable as the harmless eccentric buffoon, the head of the German spy ring, and the British infiltrator.
One moment specially caught my attention. In the bazaar scene, the woman MC mangles Churchill's praise of the RAF, thereby demonstrating the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship. That passed the British censors, DURING wartime, no less. Can you imagine the repression if a comparable German or Russian film did the same thing to a speech of Hitler or Stalin? Dictatorships can never allow humor at their expense.
A wholly interesting and educational experience. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Unappreciated as such "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" are quite sophisticated in their very early years, beginning in 1952. In one scene of O&H the audio from the tv in their living room is playing the cottage scene from this film where the Lady of the House is showing Sim the Cottage and talking about the hole in the wall where her husband almost blew himself up. One had to be familiar with the film to recognize the dialogue from that scene. which seemed to be incidental to the Ozzie, etc., scene, but a wonderful conceit and homage to the film and it's classy audience.

@@an-tm3250 it's necessary, apparently. "He's one of ours"...I wonder if he hadn't been thought so, they might have left him in 'the loch'?

    Interesting film; Thank-You!
I like the storyline and characters, the Actors and cinematography; seems almost as though it were written to be a stage production, however, and some of the end-scenes were overacted - by some Cast members.
I really enjoyed the main ‘Good-Guys’ performances, and think that Alfred Hitchcock would have done an excellent-job with it - had he directed, instead!
    Thank-You!$

You know, there is something called a "spoiler alert" so you don't ruin the movie for those who haven't seen it before. Fortunately for me, I have, but it's been a long time.
      It's called basic courtesy.
