There is no such thing as an underrated flashback. Every One Piece flashback is an A or S tier flashback. Any flashback can be considered someone’s favorite. If you think Franky has the best flashback, that is valid. If you think Luffy has the best, that is valid. Nami’s, valid. Sanji’s, valid. One piece fans may fight over the stupids comparisons, but flashbacks should be one that we all collectively agree that Oda shines on and one shouldn’t be compared to another as they are all good.
This interaction between Usopp and Franky is when I fell in love with Franky as a character. I get that people get pissed at Franky for tearing off a piece of the Merry to get to Usopp, but I love his thought process through the whole interaction. He just listened to Usopp's sad story of why he left his crew and now he's hearing that Usopp still wants to be a pirate using the Merry. Franky's a fairly honorable man, so if Usopp wanted to die with the ship; he'd leave him be. But, since Usopp clearly expressed having future aspirations, he couldn't let this aspiring young man foolishly sail to his death. He tried telling Usopp the grim reality and when he wasn't listening and being delusional, Franky did the equivalent of someone slapping their friend when they're about to do something extremely stupid. Then, when Usopp explained the Klabautermann and how he always knew, Franky changed his approach again to being a man who will give the Merry an appropriate send off. Usopp still resisted and Franky changed approach for a third time and explains that if the Merry cared about them enough to appear in physical form, then she wouldn't want to watch them die with her as she sinks. Franky can be a crazy guy, but I love how he altered his approach as he was learning more information from Usopp. In the end, he likes Usopp and wanted to do what he felt was best for his new friend and the Merry.
Franky is pretty straightforeward and appreciates that in other people. If Ussop was going to sail Merry out to sea and give her a Viking Funeral or decide he was going down with his ship Franky would have let it be with a "SUPER!" But learning Usopp wanted more from Merry than she could give struck him wrong as a shipwright. He thought Usopp was speaking from ignorance not denial and so tried to educate him. I'd say it's the Tom flashback that initially won me over to Franky. But his interactions with Usopp definitely laid the foundation by highlighting that Franky cares, he just shows his care in a way that not many people can appreciate.
CORRECTION: It was the Klabautermann who put iron plating on the keel. I went back and saw the Merry after bellamy destroyed it and when they were going up the Upstream there was no Ironplating on the keel or until they reached the alter. The Ironplating only appeared there AFTER the morning Ussop saw the Klabautermann repair the ship in the morning on top of the alter.

Franky brings another layer of discussion about the Mery issue, even Usopp thinking that he’s treating Mery, Franky says that Mery it’s not even a ship anymore… So imagine carry a dead friend refusing to burry it , it’s so sad
One thing I appreciate about One Piece is the way it handles moral lessons and worldviews. Namely, it isn't afraid to give contradictory answers in different contexts. This is illustrated much more clearly much much later on, but there are times in One Piece where a character will espouse a truth they believe with all their heart, and stand by that conviction, and it is presented as a heroic action. And then, there will be another character, isolated from the previous instance, who espouses a directly contradictory value... And it's presented as equally bold and heroic. One Piece largely is disinterested in absolute good and evil, and much more about conviction and freedom, and that's pretty neat.
Franky is being a dick but he isn't wrong. If the ship loves the Strawhats, how would she feel if she killed the whole crew because she couldn't sail anymore?
7:29 You realize Oda's genius in putting that scene of the mysterious person in Skypea fixing the merry but everything is falling into place now. He also gives hints about future arcs in this arc in minimal details that you probably won't notice. That's why I love One Piece, at the time I didn't notice these details either and everything is being revealed.
Really appreciate your reactions!! I had a twin sister named Lindsey who I lost about 10 years ago. I wish I could have experienced One Piece with her. She would have loved it. Your reactions bring me so much joy. Thank you!!
Tom getting thrown into court and immediately speaking facts was both funny and spoke a lot of the kinda guy he is, IF YOU'RE A MAN DO IT RESOLUTELY🗣🗣‼ Ep 247 for me completely dispels the idea a chunk of the community has that Usopp would have left the crew no matter how they delivered the news to him (he wouldn't have listened *specifically* after Luffy's silliness, hell, Franky was even more aggressive and he still managed to make him speak out). Wranky addressed Merry as a person and acknowledged the amount of love Usopp (and the crew) gave to her, it's pretty similar to the lecture the shipwrights gave to Luffy, and what do you know, it worked lol. The problem was never about having emotions but rather letting those emotions let you do reckless things (this goes more so to Luffy because he calls the shots), the bad delivery of the news was unfortunate but it's also important to point out they didn't give Usopp much time to cope either.
Franky is literally trying to save Usopp's life here xD I love Merry, but if Usopp is just gonna take the Merry with him and die, better Franky dismantles it right now. "We can still reclaim the wood and use it in the next ship" of course, but that's exactly what Franky is doing (yes it doesn't look it, but that's anime logic for you) remember that he sells back the wood of dismantled ship to the shipyard.
Nice catch on Tom's tattoo btw! He doesn't seem at all affilitated with Arlong's crew,so there's definitely theories to be had as to why all these fishmen are carrying it!
Klabautermann - real thing. That scene still gets me. This entire saga is easily one of the best in the series. Some of the groundwork that was laid early on begins to pay off here.
FUN FACT - Klabautermann come from real life German myths. A Klabautermann is a water kobold that assists sailors and fishermen on the Baltic and North Sea in their duties. It is a merry and diligent creature, with an expert understanding of most watercraft, and an irrepressible musical talent. It is believed to rescue sailors washed overboard. The name comes from the Low German verb klabastern meaning "rumble" or "make a noise". An etymology deriving the name from the verb kalfatern ("to caulk" or "to seal" "to repair" "to mend together") has also been suggested
i have heard Klabautern or at least Klabautermann before (i was born and raised near Hamburg, Germany) but ive never heard of kalfatern which is kinda odd... since my City is old as fuck.
Imagine being those people that dropped this reaction series because they got too emotional at animals being hurt, this was easily in my top 3 reactions to the Merry reveal.
"Do it resolutely" I always thought was an awkward translation. Tom's literally saying "do it with a don!", where "don" is the sound of a drum, e.g., do it with a bang. IMO it would've been smoother if it was "do it with spirit" or "do it with gusto".
The Klabauterman makes Iceberg's and the galley-la telling Luffy to get another ship feel diferent to me now. First of if Franky know about it then Iceberg knows it too, granted they don't know the Merry has one but still, My point is Iceberg telling Luffy he is a bad captain, feels two fold, in that he is putting the crew in danger but also wasting the Merry's sacrifice as well. im german, and when i was a kid we had a tv show for kids where, at the end of it, there was a blue bear who was a ships captain, who would tell stories of his life to his nephews. he was called captain blue-bear ( käptn blaubär for us germans), and in one of his stories, the klabautermann was a character. obviously inspired by the same north-german legends as oda was. however, there he was more of a....scary creature that you never saw, but was vaguely evil and doing mischief on your ship? i remember it having something to do with fish-sticks lmao. anyway, those stories were based on the book "the 13½ lives of captain blue bear" by walter moers, a book that i can recommend to absolutely everyone! its extremely creative and tells the complete story of the first half of captain blubears life. actually, the creativity and world building very much remind me of one piece itself. anyway, my familiarity with that show/book was the reason i didnt even question it when the klabautermann came up in one piece later. i was like "ohh so it was a little klabautermann guy! makes sense!" and then only later realized that to people who were not familiar with those stories, this would sound extremely weird lmao. i didnt think about that when i first watched/read the water 7 arc back in the day😅
Correct me if I'm wrong but is the evil/mischievous version of klabauterman much more of a modern take on it since I heard like way back in the day it used to be the same as the one piece version of it, I'm genuinely curious by this.
@@crabstervs8167 i just did a quick google search, since i wasnt sure either - to me it looks like its been kind of both from its inception (as far as ive seen, in the 18 hundreds?). apparently its always been seen as a sometimes helpful, sometimes mischievous figure. also to be fair, my memories about that childrens show are very much from the viewpoint of a child - im pretty sure i just thought the klabautermann was evil bc they made him mysterious and slightly spooky? i think i remember him just being a disembodied voice who knocked on the door or something and that freaked me out as a kid :D so i dont think its necessarily a modern take per se 🤔 well idk, that captain bluebear book is from 1999 so maybe oda even knows it maybe? idk i think he'd like it if he doesnt :D

It's not a 'world serpent', that's a norse thing. and yeah as others said it has nothing to do with Roger.
Trivia Time (Source: One Piece Wiki): «In real world myths, Klabautermann is said to be a male seafaring spirit that aids ships of crews that truly deserve it, rather than being an incarnation of the ship. The word "Klabautermann" comes from older dialects of the German language. There is also one bad omen associated with it. The spirit only makes itself visible to the crew of a doomed ship. This is shown to be true in One Piece, as Usopp saw the spirit fixing Going Merry back in Skypiea, and in the end, due to various events occurring, Going Merry was broken beyond repair.»
Oro means gold it has nothing to do with Orochi Remember that his name is Gold Roger, his ship is gold Jackson Maybe Jackson is a reference to Micheal Jackson the king of pop and Roger is the King of pirates, also Oda is a music lover just like Jojo Mangaka Araki There is a lot of references to artists in one piece
4:20 they are cursing Franky for doing that as if they know anything about Ships😂 The wood can be used after demolishing too imo, he's doing his job as a shipwright Edit: Great Discussion tho!!
you may calling franky an ass, but actually he really care about both usopp and merry that's the kinda man he is, he doesn't do stuff without reason, first when he stole the money from usopp is obviously in his mind stealing from pirate isn't wrong, he just stole them for greater good (spoiler alert), he's trying to ripped merry because he doesn't want usopp to sink and die with the ship because he's still young, but he stop after hearing from usopp perspective and begin to understand what kind a crew he and merry had, and comfort usopp about how happy merry must be and after that he offer to take care of merry and told usopp to move on, because if merry sink while carrying usopp and causing him to die, merry will be sad
*The Puffing Tom is one of my favorite backstories. They really did save the lives of this whole town.* In the flashback you see the people of Water Seven were devoid of hope, surrounded on all sides, just waiting for the unavoidable end of all they had. Then we remember how when we got here everyone was so happy and nice, a complete 180° from what it was before. And it was all thanks to Tom 😭
Lol I love your frustration when Franky destroy the ship 😂 but remember Paulie and Kaku said (freaking traitor he is, but his job as shipwright really done well) that the Keel of the Going Merry has been damaged, and that replacing the keel of a ship is effectively rebuilding the entire ship from scratch (as the keel is the base on which a ship is built), and that even if they attempted to build a replica of the Going Merry, the crew would be able to tell that it was not the same ship anymore, as they (the Galley-La) are not the shipwrights who originally built the ship and neither do they have the exact same materials that's why you can't just use the old wood from Merry

Yo you know what would be insane if at the end of OnePiece Luffy and his crew get isekaid into another even crazier world that connects to theirs and there would be the origins of what caused the end of OnePiece and maybe even Luffys mom there and Kuina if they don't mention them in this series again. Would be a cool idea, sadly I just don't think Oda has any more energy for another story after OnePiece ends 😢
This is just such a good saga. I feel like Water 7 is where Oda levels up as a writer. He'd always been good, with very intentional story-telling. But the way he ties his narrarive threads together in this arc is something else. Also, I love that you keep asking where Sanji is, I definitely kept wondering about him my first go through 😂😂

«In real world myths, Klabautermann is said to be a male seafaring spirit that aids ships of crews that truly deserve it, rather than being an incarnation of the ship.
Their reactions are fun because they are reacting EXACTLY how Oda wants them to react. They’re like little puppets dancing on the palm of his hand…..
By this point there's a pavlovian response to that sad piece of music: Just start up the tears.
Oro is "Gold" in some Latin languages (such as Spanish and Italian) so, you know... Gold Roger and stuff

Holy crap, Tom knew!!! Roger must have told him! For sure!
9:27 makes me tear up every single time
Come to think of it thanks the lord merry was demolised there u know also ussop knowing the real state of merry hit in feels 😢
Oro means gold it has nothing to do with Orochi
Remember that his name is Gold Roger, his ship is gold Jackson
Maybe Jackson is a reference to Micheal Jackson the king of pop and Roger is the King of pirates, also Oda is a music lover just like Jojo Mangaka Araki
There is a lot of references to artists in one piece
Oro Jackson - not sure what the Jackson means, but the Oro is "gold" in Spanish.
Oda doesn't just use Japanese words.
We've finally arrived at what is possibly my top favorite flashback in the series by far! 😁
Oro means gold in Spanish, So I think its Jackson Gold or Gold Jackson
4:20 they are cursing Franky for doing that as if they know anything about Ships😂
The wood can be used after demolishing too imo, he's doing his job as a shipwright
Edit: Great Discussion tho!!
YESSSS CRYYYYYYYY
Which minute?

Usopp is supposed to be the star of this arc but robin swept the rug off his feet
you may calling franky an ass, but actually he really care about both usopp and merry that's the kinda man he is, he doesn't do stuff without reason, first when he stole the money from usopp is obviously in his mind stealing from pirate isn't wrong, he just stole them for greater good (spoiler alert), he's trying to ripped merry because he doesn't want usopp to sink and die with the ship because he's still young, but he stop after hearing from usopp perspective and begin to understand what kind a crew he and merry had, and comfort usopp about how happy merry must be and after that he offer to take care of merry and told usopp to move on, because if merry sink while carrying usopp and causing him to die, merry will be sad
Oro means gold. Jackson is Michael's last name. The goat!
no ep today??
yeah i swear they usually realease it 3 hours earlier from now
Oro is just gold in a different language, the Orochi in mythology is an 8-headed snake not a “world serpent”
OKAY GUYS IM CURIOUS FOR FUTURE EPISODES NOW
ORO is just the spanish of GOLD which is his name.
Gold in spanish is Oro
"It's just a ship bro"
Good eye for the tattoos
*The Puffing Tom is one of my favorite backstories. They really did save the lives of this whole town.*
In the flashback you see the people of Water Seven were devoid of hope, surrounded on all sides, just waiting for the unavoidable end of all they had.
Then we remember how when we got here everyone was so happy and nice, a complete 180° from what it was before. And it was all thanks to Tom 😭
It’s called Oro Jackson because Oro in Spanish means gold. Tom’s tattoo is similar to the one you see on other fishmen but it’s design is different.

Lindsay might die from this saga😅
Yo you know what would be insane if at the end of OnePiece Luffy and his crew get isekaid into another even crazier world that connects to theirs and there would be the origins of what caused the end of OnePiece and maybe even Luffys mom there and Kuina if they don't mention them in this series again. Would be a cool idea, sadly I just don't think Oda has any more energy for another story after OnePiece ends 😢
Nahh, This Ain't too much, it just started 😅😅.
This is just such a good saga. I feel like Water 7 is where Oda levels up as a writer. He'd always been good, with very intentional story-telling. But the way he ties his narrarive threads together in this arc is something else.
Also, I love that you keep asking where Sanji is, I definitely kept wondering about him my first go through 😂😂
Patiently waiting for 312
This arc is awesome from beginning to end so prepare yourself guys!! Thanks for the reaction 🎉🎉
Oro means Gold in spanish, just fyi. I always figured it was because it was Gold Roger's ship that it was called Gold too...
Dont you dare question Franky’s Chadly moves, every move he makes is Chadfull to the bone
Nothing supernatural about One Piece? We just witnessed god himself getting his ass kicked.
Never noticed Merry's shadow in the ending song😶🌫️✨
Oh man if they get like this now... oof, it's gonna be rough sailing in a bit lol
Yep
9:46 U WILL NEED TO TAKE MORE 😭😭
im sl existed for the future episodes!!! its gonna be so much fun!!!
Oro is italian for gold.
Tom was a true man!
Looking forward to the next few eps
Man I love this show so much! I love these reactions just as much too fr
When did they said tom ate snake snake fruit I'm confuse.
Never
Then why Carson said that lol😂
oro is spanish and italian for gold , not sure about the jackson part
It was in fact not Tom’s ghost in fact it was some pokemon or sum
Lindsay is not gonna survive the end of this saga, right?
Lindsay’s side eye when franky is teaching him to do the front crawl killed me 😂
They aint ready 😂
The way yall are absolutely wrong about Franky is wild
the ship of theseus is why Oda had franky do this.
future merry stuff is gonna be interesting
