- For the longest time in American entertainment, The Simpson’s Apu was the only major Indian figure on television. Depicted primarily as a convenience store clerk, Apu has long been the center of criticism by the Indian-American community for his shallow representations of Indians and Indian culture. And after 30 years on air, the voice actor of Apu, Hank Azaria, recently announced that he will no longer be voicing the character going forward. But while the Indian-American stance is well circulated, are you curious as to how people in India feel about the Apu character? We hit the streets of Mumbai to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indian population.

The point of the Simpsons is to be offensive. It is meant to be politically incorrect. All characters are stereotypes.
exactly, all characters are equally presented in a very sarcastic and exaggerated way. If it's Abu or Flanders or Homer, they all are portrayed in the same "offensive" way. Also it's a cartoon made by and for adults. I don't think theres one (grown) person on earth who honestly believes that real people have bright yellow skin.
The thing is, when an American roasts/stereotypes Americans, that's generally deemed acceptable. Still, many black Americans might get offended if a non-black American makes fun of them, and vice versa. Already the western world propagates a very negative image of developing Asian countries in general, so adding such offensively stereotypical humor layer to it is bound to not go down well with people who are at the receiving end; Indians, in this case. And it's not limited to Indians. I've seen several instances online of Americans or Europeans getting very offended when Asian people roast them. It's natural.

Most of the characters in the Simpson are a stereotype of something. That's why it's funny.
Amen, political correctness is killing our childhood.
somaiat the difference is, indian people only had apu as representation for a long time in the west, so western people incorrectly stereotyped and percieved indians in general like Apu, when indians in fact are more diverse than westerners.
@@IndoManiac90 What makes you think Indians are more diverse than westerns, have you ever studied the history of the western world to just make that subjective opinion? @@IndoManiac90 You're correct, but the thing is, that's a systemic problem with American media.

When it comes to The Simpsons, every character is seen as equally stereotyped. The show maintains this status quo well because it isn’t meant to be hyper realistic or politically correct, but rather an adult cartoon that places a satirical emphasis on modern American society through fiction.
Homer: fat dumb American… Ned Flanders: crazy religious guy… every Italian: in the mob… Krusty the clown: a bum who has nothing going for him… list goes on
What if an American was portrayed in an Indian Cartoon to be obese, eating burger all the time, noisy owning a gun and getting a divorce after every marriage(about 50% American marriages fail). If they would find it funny, then we too find Apu funny.
Go ahead and represent Americans that way in a cartoon.

I watched the Simpsons basically my entire life. My interpretation of Apu has always been an intelligent, successful man that patiently endures the stream of idiots he encounters. The episode where Lisa goes vegetarian is one of my favorites and Apu is the only "thinking" person she encounters and he mentors her. His character is one of few on the show that is never an imbecile or idiot.
Same. Apu may not be the most funny character but just like Lisa the most normal and intelligent character.
If my memory serves, Apu actually has a degree and can be considered one of the smartest characters in the series; up there with Lisa and Professor Frink. (Yes, Professor Frink is rather eccentric, but he's still incredibly intelligent.)
@@notsureiL now this is something we(Indians) should be offended by. Apu should be the most funniest character in Simpsons. Smh.

I think, not so many Indians know about this show...
It was already there, the voice artist quit because of this controversy so yeah this is a follow up to try to align the thoughts between the Indian American community and the a Indian community.
I dont watch Simpsons anymore but back in the Nineties I thought Apu as a character was a positive influence, not necessarily of Indian people but Indian convenience store owners. Back then it was a fairly new thing and some people didnt like it. They thought "they are taking over our country". Apu humanized them to the long time American citizens. Having said that, maybe that was a long time ago and maybe Apu as his original intention has lost its meaning (Simpsons too). He should however be respected for his original meaning.
You know, these guys do have a point. People who watch satire tend to believe that everything that happens on screen happens in real life. Take Monty Python for instance, they represent cheese shop owners in a very negative light by suggesting that they never have any cheese. They do a massive disservice by massively oversimplifying the job of a cheese shop owner. I would love it if there could be one show that really dives deep into every facet of being a cheese shop owner like placing cheese orders, filing taxes, cleaning the shop, paying bills, dealing with boring customers, waiting around all day. It is truly riveting stuff that is sure to garner the attention of the masses for its attention to detail and the thrilling nature of the job.
Hopefully you guys understand that comedy is comedy. Anything you see done in a comedy show should not be taken seriously at face value because it most likely purposely misrepresents the subject matter for the sake of comedy. If you want a factual and true telling on something, go to school, read a book, speak to an expert, or watch a documentary
Nice satire dude! I see what you did over there with the cheese shop owners thing. 😂
Indian-Americans: *APU IS OFFENSIVE.*

These people aren’t the 100% representation of India. There are still adults, old people, many local language only people and working class, who are not so open like a city, middle class English taught teen towards western humor that shows sensitive topics that people are actually trying to curb. Like for example consider the show showing actual slave trading, homophobia and black person shown to be just a gang member who keeps stealing things, in general these would have a message type portrayal of situation that shows how wrong they are but they didn’t do that for these sensitive topics because of lack of knowledge. I just *HOWLED* laughing!
He is right!
It's a contrast thing. The more foreign something is to someone, the harder it becomes to distinguish between things. It works both ways too. To someone who doesn't speak English, or a Germanic language, they might have a really hard time noticing differences between a British accent or American accent.
me too!!! lmao tear jerker....i am still laughing!
@@abbyalphonse499 part of the problem is most Indians learn British English to begin with because of the country's history. This makes it even more difficult when speaking to Americans. Their pronunciation is an attempt to emulate a dialect Americans themselves have trouble understanding even though it's the same language. On top of this, the way Hindi and other Indian languages are structured, it lacks phonemes critical to English. Perfect example is the letter H. Most Indians will pronounce it like "hatch" when it's more like "eech". I've noticed they have trouble with G too. Then when you get to words that are both portmanteaus of Latin and Germanic languages, it breaks down completely.
I think the interviewer should have mentioned that clip is older than most of the interviewees.
If Indian Americans find it offensive, wouldn't it make sense to interview Indian Americans vs people in India who've not heard of the cartoon?
No because the point of this channel is talking to people in Asia. lol
True that.... Seems like Asian boss is looking for some spice 😅

Yes, that would make sense. It's great to hear from Indian people in India, but I feel like it's not the full picture.
Yeah it doesn't make sense to ask Indians or east Asians these kinds of questions because they don't have the lived experience of being a racial minority in a white majority country. What millennial Indian Americans say about Apu is that for a long time he was the only reference point in American media for what Indians are like, so a lot of American perceptions about Indians were based this exaggerated caricature. I personally don't find Apu's character to be very offensive, but our opinions aren't relevant.
I love how the interviewer asked the questions in a way to nudge them to say they were offended and most still said it was okay and funny 😆
Haha yeah, journalism ^^"
Yeahhh.... context was very much lacking here and there were a lot of leading questions. He should have explained that this show is comprised of stereotypes of all cultures and exaggerated archetypes of the people you will find in America. Just full of leading questions.

Some people in the comment section need to stop accent shaming Indians.
An average Indian speaks about 3 regional languages(could be more). Accent is something that you cannot control when you grow up speaking so many languages. It's the mother tongue effect.
So stop making fun of Indians if they speak English with a heavy accent.
And yes... Apu's accent is definitely exaggerated. Only Indians could tell this. It may sound same to non-Indians.
Also, it would be justified if you conduct this interview with the American Indians. The Simpsons isn't even popular in India. You can't judge a character by few clips.
Shaming ≠ making fun of
I think many people genuinely enjoy Indian accent because it sounds funny and entertaining to them. It's different and recognizable. Why be ashamed of something that invokes positive feelings in the listeners? It's more like a gift, just be proud of it instead of feeling insecure about your accent.
@@tiihtu2507 Finding something entertaining and making fun of something.. are 2 different things.

Easier said than done.
@@RiYa-et2fy Yes, because nobody never makes fun of Finnish accent(s). Obviously I don't have the slightest clue how you feel because I'm not Indian. 🤦♂️
...
People can't shame or insult you if you don't care about what they think. While in normal social context that is a recipe for trouble, in this case the opinion of other people shouldn't really matter, true? The accent is part of you and other Indian people and it doesn't harm anyone. It's not up to Americans or any other nationality to decide if it's good or bad, so why should you feel ashamed or insulted if someone outside of India doesn't like it? It's unfair to expect other people to change the way they speak when there is nothing inherently wrong about it.
...
However, just as I said, I think most English speakers actually enjoy the Indian accent. It just sounds characteristic and defies their expectations in relation to their native accent so people find it funny and people like to make fun of funny things. It's not the only accent that people poke fun of, not even close. I'm not sure if there is need to take it too seriously, because it doesn't negatively affect on how Indians are seen. Even in the Simpsons Abu is probably the sanest and most likable character.
The accent is not exaggerated at all just listen to this people in the interview are you deaf? They have extremely heavy accent that I can barely undersrand.

As someone from a rural white area, I find Apu to be far closer to the way these people talk than to the way people I grew up around talk are generally portrayed.
Fantastic video my friend! Very interesting to see the different view points!
Why am I finding the Indian interviews the most enjoyable on asian boss channel?
The people interviewed, regardless of their age, are all very well spoken, eloquent and with their own well thought opinion. Thumbs up for the great work 💓
Indians are highly opinionated in general. It's hard to find an Indian who is clueless about things around the world

I love the Simpson's, I love apu and I love hank and his portrayal. Having said that I completely get that Indian kids living in a largely 'white' country may have suffered hurtful remarks by others who didn't know better (or didn't care...)
I think Hank's apology shows he's a decent guy but he's not really to blame. I'll miss him as Apu.

funny that the people with the same accent as apu say that they have no accent.
Yes, they have basically the same accent as Apu (which is not a bad thing per se, in fact it's not something one can easily control) even as they are saying they do not.
Which makes you realize how little you can tell about your own accent.
@@firefly618 It wasn't until I started traveling outside of Ohio to different parts of America that I realized I had an accent (one of many accents in America). I had no idea at the time. It is almost impossible to detect one's own accent.

Really..?
Are U sure..? Coz I couldn't Find that..
ENGLISH is actually the Official Language of Indian govt, To that This Accent it makes Me think are U dumb to realize there are 425 language in India and EXPECT us to Have SAME ACCENT.. WTF
Their accent comes from being asian and attempting to speak british english instead of american english. I find it soothing.
Manufacturing outrage. The Simpsons mocks literally everyone.
I love hearing level-headed responses by the people being lampooned as opposed to the loud, blanket calls for cancellation after one person pointed out the negative side. And most often the calls are coming from people who are unaffected by the controversy in question.
There is no such thing as cancel culture. If that were the case most of Hollywood and music would be out of work. People sure know how to run a word into the ground.
I will say this. As a a Sri Lankan I was often mocked by my white peers at university with an Apu accent. I feel Sri Lankans speak English with a different accent compared to our Indian and other South Asian fellows so the sort of generalisation that "all brown people speak the same" was thoroughly irritating.
Most do so you can’t be mad
The problem with Apu as can be seen in this interview is that even Indians themselves have different accents based on which states they are from.

The girl at 10:53 makes a good point but who the hell from America has the the money and leisure time available to travel to India just to learn more about the culture and correct their stereotypes? Does anyone care enough to do that? Most white people here earn minimum wage, are in massive debt, and spend whatever extra money they have on junk food or beer or entertainment. The onus is on the native Indian culture to stop making stereotypical Bollywood films, fight to break the “Fobby” stereotype, and present the best and boldest modernized authentic Indians so the stereotype can be changed and the world will stop making fun of “Indian culture”
Why a non indian guy is voicing a Indian character that's so weird
Hes an actor
I feel like the interview is a little unfair to Apu's character, considering he's a recurring side character who had a whole story arc and this is a pretty old episode (as in tough this was a major plot point for Apu, his story did not end here). His marriage is just one episode and there is a lot more to his character than just that. He's smart and well-educated, he's an entrepreneur who loves his job, he's charming and romantic, he became a father (which stressed him out because after desperately trying for a baby they end up having 8), he taught Lisa you can't force your views on others (when she became vegetarian)... He's been beloved by many fans.

The Simpsons play INTERNATIONALLY
@@disneydisney1490 Sure, the show is global. But it is viewed most by Americans. Therefore, Indian-Americans are going to be those most affected by the cultural stereotypes.
@@disneydisney1490 Indian here. We don't have The Simpsons streaming on T. V.
Americans Indians are not the original indigenous Indians but rather the political face of the new world because they changed the face of the old world! These people come from Siberia an different parts of russia alot of them are khazar Mongolian Turk descendants Americas history is not the truth. Our history is political although other countries history is political but not like ours! A lot of real Indians in America were reclassified as African America or Black Americans for political purposes by the democrats! Indians are not pale we come in different shades of brown. Those so call Indians that are pale are descendants of khazar Turks an are not indigenous coming from the original authentic stock!
This was fascinating. Thank you.
To be fair I don't think Indians in India can have a full understanding of why Indian Americans might find Apu offensive. They don't have to deal with the people around them only having an idea of their culture from a cartoon that makes jokes about them. And obviously it'll even be different for Indians in America and whether they live in a diverse community or somewhere where they could be the only Indian person in the town.
I like the short haired girl’s personality, she gives good vibes lol
What they didn’t mention is that the Simpsons makes fun of all races and nationalities, they make fun of Americans more than they do India’s, they don’t even portray Apu in a bad way either.
How many American characters are on TV vs Indian characters. Indians have 1 representation; Apu. While Americans have millions of different ppl on TV and they are a majority group.
That's true! The Simpsons make fun of everyone and portray stereotypes from all countries! Apu was not portrayed in a bad light, but he, and this episode in particular, were heavily stereotyped.
These stereotypes do not harm (white) Americans, whereas they do harm Indian people.
While The Simpsons does make fun of Americans, they are showing it to a primarily (white) American audience, who know that it is a joke, and can understand that the stereotypes because they themselves are American.
When these stereotypes are of an oppressed group, it gives (white) Americans an excuse to be racist and all-around bad people!
Or at least, this is what I thought, but I never really watched The Simpsons and I don't live in America either.

The moment they removed apu, the last jigsaw piece of the Simpson’s end was laid down
An angle no one seems to be considering is that the episode of The Simpsons shown is 30 years old and the scene is a flashback to at least 20 years before the “present” time of that episode. The situation depicted in that episode while wildly stereotypical today, probably wasn’t as far out 50 years ago.
she said American humor is offensive generally and I think it's the reason why the American show is funny to some people. Some people always want to see someone or some community offended,it is funny to them because it just makes you feel like you are better person and better community.

I'd like to see how Indian Americans see this. Since this isn't even a well known show in India, this doesn't really affect them.
Christoph Waltz - Indian American here. Grew up in NY/Denver. Apu is hilarious. The nature of comedy in America is to be offensive. I 1000% guarantee that if Apu wasn’t in the simpsons, people like Hari K. would be complaining that The Simpsons were being offensive by not having an Indian character in the context of other characters like Irish groundskeeper Willie or the Mexican bumblebee. “You can only please some of the people, some of the time.”
Its a pretty well known show here ...indian american here .

Arranged marriage: I work in the IT industry. 95% of my colleagues got an arranged marriage. However, I've not come across child marriage in urban India. It's the same with dowry too. None of my colleagues gave or received dowry, but I know it's common in less urban parts of India.

It's racist to think Apu is racist. It's racist to think Will Smith is racist. If you think either, you have gone too far left.
To be fair, this clip is over 20 years old. The joke was more accurate of the time then. They even mention "We have moved on, why would they tell a joke like this now?" Cause they didn't. This was made before a number of these people were born.
It’s a 20 year old clip and there is a flashback to when Apu was a child
Still even in that age india wasn't like that.....😂😂😂 let's just say Americans have very small amount of knowledge & they know more about fantasy aliens world than real world 😂
@@pc_hmk2204 On LADBible RUclips channel there’s many people who have been forced into arranged marriage at a very young age and escaped it. It is a very real thing that happened traditionally in India and almost every country on Earth. I have no idea how often it happens today though.
I’m Punjabi Indian born in UK..but have been back to india a number of times throughout my life (I’m early 40s).
Although India has modernised in some respects over the last 10-15 years…there are still arranged marriages..overwhelmingly!
Young people have relationships outside of marriage of course..but it’s still quite hidden. There are exceptions of course.
Attitudes towards women in Indian Society hasn’t radically changed..even in the big cities. A lot of it has to do with culture and lack of education overall. You have to remember the size of India in population..and although there are many educated people in India..there’s many that aren’t. I’m not sure how factual the literacy rate of over 70% of Indians is according to last census..as only 4.5% are educated to degree level.
By the way I’ve met both educated, semi educated and illiterate Indians. I may not live there..but I believe I know enough to form the opinion I have.

I understand Apu more than the girl in pink. Exaggerated or not, Hank did a great job with Apu.
we are trying to understand why this is offensive from the wrong way.. like honestly i don't find this offensive that much but the problem is a lot of kids watch this show.. kids who don't know any better and this stuff really influences you as a kid without even knowing it and maybe not all kids but sufficient kids watch this enough to change their attitudes about their Indian classmates in a subtle way.. so yeah the point i'm trying to make is that, yes we could argue all day between adults about whether this is offensive or not, or we could look at the real impact it has on kids in subtle ways and try to combat that by actually trying to understand how this could have impacted Indian-American kids in class and making the necessary changes to avoid such stuff in the future..
