I'm Scottish, and the only thing that ever offended me on the Simpsons was when Homer went to Scotland, saw a Loch Ness Monster statue that said *"Aberdeen sucks"* written on it, and Homer responded with *"No way, Aberdeen rules!"* I'm from Aberdeen. It does suck.
All of my Indian friends hate that Apu was removed, it was their favourite character- it was MY favourite character too, and I'm European. He's one of the smartest characters in the whole show, and often serves to show just how DUMB American culture can be, and how he has to dumb himself down to fit in. I feel like people who think that Apu was a negative racial stereotype weren't really paying attention, at all. Same kinda people who see mini-skirts in star-trek and think it's sexist, when in reality it was feminism and at the time, so progressive it nearly got them canceled.
I think creators should just start telling the PC crowd to stuff it and continue doing what they're doing. If we ignore them they'll eventually give up and start complaining about something actually worth complaining about.
However, Apu is still getting a new makeover for his character because of the controversy. It's not just his voice that is going to be changed. It's literally his whole lifestyle.
@@RoughMoon24 but that doesn't solve the issue. The only solution they have is to remove him completely. Changing his accent wouldn't make sense, changing his voice actor but keeping the accent wouldn't change the fact that he's a stereotype and changing his whole personality, job, story, etc would probably feel as out of place as Barney being sober.
@@highdefinition450 My opinion is that Apu voiced by an Indian voice actor is the only makeover after the Apu-controversy. Also not all Indians & south Asians have the problem with Apu.
As a brown dude who is slightly older than Hari but grew up with the same shit and being called Apu... I 100% agree with this video. Hari is butthurt, the whole point of Apu was to shed light on a minority which never gets any screen time.
@Rookmations The basic idea got through, and yeah, we are in agreement. Real shame that Azaria has personally said he will no longer voice the character, that is one of the bigger shames, because it really does send the wrong message, as you said, about voicework and who can do what. I live not far from him in NYC and actually have seen him on the street once, if I ever run into him, I'll actually go up to him and bother him this time to thank him for his work and respectfully disagree with his decision to cave to the Haris of this world.
I wish we could have more actual Brain Dump episodes like this. Not to say that the newer "clickbait subversion of expectations" format can't be fun, I just have my preferences is all.
Yeah I agree. I do enjoy the banter between Max and Goofball, but I'd love it if Max made more videos where he actually talks about the things he says he's going to talk about. The way he expresses his opinions and ideas in this video is very enjoyable.
@@OdaSwifteye interesting point, as I think about it more, subversion by definition does require an element of sneakiness. if it's a regular ting, then it can't be subversion as you or I know it. still split as to how I feel about your take, though! I never really saw it as Smithers being gay, thus he liked Barbies. I always just thought it was cool he had this random collection. But I see what you mean now. Glad it didn’t bother you!
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with a gay character having some stereotypical aspects as long as it's not derailing their characterization to make them do something stereotypical because a writer somehow felt the need to fill a stereotype quota. The problem is when a show consistently writes gay characters that way & acts like it's normal. Like Family Guy. The gay characters in that show are almost incapable of having a personality trait other than "does stuff you'd expect from a gay character". As a result, they're barely characters. They're just vehicles for jokes. Though the same could be said for any modern Family Guy character.
The fact that this man can switch easily from being obscene, grotesque, and downright offensive to a politically correct, genuine person makes me love him THAT much more.
@@mikesmith6422 I think you can genuinely be politically correct. There are plenty of bland boring people in the world. That's why all the funny people joke about things that AREN'T politically correct.

When they boot her from the show and give Ms. Keen a double mastectomy it does not send the "girl power" message they are going for. Looking back, I absolutely adore the modern episodes that have zero to do with the thumbnail. I think they're the best episodes. Yet, I also really really love this episode and it's masterfully made. I think it's proof that Max can do both. I can't believe how skilled he is as a writer and an artist.
I am an Indian and honestly, I got so pumped up whenever Apu appeared on the show. I wanted to thank the writers for putting so much effort into creating such a wholesome, lovable character that I could identify myself with. Never saw him as an insult to my culture.
Rishav Siddhanta You don't speak for all indian people do you? Anyways as a non-indian person, he doesn't seem all that wholesome to me. At least not most of the time. Maybe he's given some dimension from time to time but over all he just comes of as a joke. Some idiots are probably going to say that's the point cause it's a comedy but we're talking about character substance or the idea behind a character here. And from that perspective he just doesn't seem very real at all. Or even come off as a reflection or exaggeration of someone that's real. Feels like a bunch of unflattering stereotypes cobbled together and balanced out with attempts of making him seem more developed than he is
Scoring57 I don’t think those were merely attempts to make him more developed. Like the guy said it’s a bait and switch,to subvert your expectations of the Indian guy the runs your local covenant store. Who’d have thought this guy would have a PhD?

Quite honestly, they just told the actor "do everything Scottish accent you ever heard at the same time and be from Glasgow" and then said "take it to 12"
"He's a bait and switch, and some people aren't seeing the switch" This is so accurate. As a lifelong Indian and lifelong Simpsons fan, Apu was one of my favourite characters, I'd go so far as to say a positive influence on Indian stereotypes. Apu is portrayed as just stereotypical enough that viewers aren't alienated, except from when the focus is on him which is when he goes above and beyond. We'll miss you, sweet prince.
@@Ando1428 When I really think about it, Apu is about the only stereotypical Indian character , with that type of accent, that doesn't piss me off for "trying too hard to be THAT INDIAN GUY".
Yeah, I would love to see some more racial representation in good ways. Like Hawaiian culture, I feel like no one ever represents us but a few cameos in adult cartoons.
I remember when I was young, the only character that I ever used in order to beat the Simpsons Wrestling was Apu. So I am grateful that I was able to beat the game with Apu.
The funniest thing is during that documentary, the dude goes to visit his Indian immigrant parents and the first thing they do after he shows them a clip of Apu is they make fun of his hair saying he has “Apu hair” and the mom says they cast Hank to do a job and he does it well. And she has just as thick (maybe even more thick) of an accent.
"It's not the Simpsons writers who have reduced Apu to his accent. It's YOU who has done this by disregarding everything that humanizes the character and gives him depth choosing instead to only focus on his voice." OH MY GOODNESS. THANK YOU. God, if more people were willing to say stuff like this about almost ANY character they consider offensive, we wouldn't need to have discussions like this in the first place. It's especially notable to say this when you consider that The Simpsons has been around for almost 30 years and no one considered it a problem before.
the argument of "it is be there for 30 years, why you got so upset just now?", is the dumbest thing to ask, and is one of the things that make this shitty discussion that big, the answer is simple, "because they were children 30 years ago", all this bullshit was just a thing because both sides don't know how to talk like adults
@@PEDROGARCIA-qj3gr Honestly I kind of agree, the argument that "if it wasn't wrong for [a long time] then why is it wrong now" is very weak. @@Ashley-iw2no I find it potentially closer to offensive and racist to say a character from another land is not allowed to have a thick accent. Doesn't that strike you as odd to say thick accents are looked down upon and people should get a new voice when coming to America, even in a comedy? Thick accents can't be represented? They'll never be more than a stereotype, because people can't look past it? If you ask me, taking a character out because of a thick accent and running a convenience store (even though there's far more to Apu) seems closer to being racist than leaving him in.
I always love coming back to this video. Even after the controversy has passed there's just a lot of wisdom on life and art packed into this. Plus the popeyes chicken joke is always a huge hit
I'm a white woman who grew up watching The Simpsons. I haven't seen the show in years, but Apu was _always_ my favourite character. I was a kid, but I didn't see him as an Indian stereotype and I didn't like him because of his accent. He was a genuine, kind, and hardworking guy who loves his family and friends. Yes, of course, there are some cliches to his character, as with _every_ character on the show, but he's so much more than just a convenience store owner. One of my favourite episodes was when he went on a pilgrimage with Homer, and Homer kept screwing up the entire journey. At the end, Apu beats the crap out of Homer for ruining everything, and I cheered! As a lower middle class white kid, I sympathised and identified with an Indian character in a comedy show. It's almost like ... he was a good character.

That was beautiful. It kinda blows my mind seeing how many of the cartoon characters from my childhood had funny accents, and how much we would lose if they were all taken away. This is a really important video and I honestly think anyone should see it, Simpsons fan or not. It honestly transcends the Apu discussion and becomes even more meaningful as a broader discussion of race and culture and how that relationship interacts with comedy, and how important that interaction is to our society. I'm almost sad you drew that beautiful picture of naked Apu because I would have loved to share this with my family and colleagues, but your taboo-ignoring oddball humor only made the video more poignant as a celebration of wackiness, and why it's so important to our society. He's hardly a flattering depiction of my culture - he's loud, violent, aggressive, patriotic, proud, stubborn and psychopathic - but that's what I found funny about him, that's what everyone found funny about him! This is the same character who tried to keep sheltered from the rain by holding a colander over his head, and never once did I feel as of there was any malicious or mean-spirited intent behind him to dehumanise or disparage my nationality. I love the show, I love both the depth and simplicity of its characters and to this day, I'll still defend Willy and the depiction of Scots. But hey, guess my opinion doesn't count, because the character that stereotypes my culture is white.
So as somebody who has seen Skinheads, and the KKK, this idea is what creates it. People who are white feel that those like Indians and Blacks are criminalizing them. This is nobody's intention, I assure you. Please, talk in depth to a black person or Indian, and share your thoughts on the matter.
Stickursor Hey man, thank you for responding. Don't believe that demoralizing, self-destructive white guilt meme. It will only poison your mind and self-image.
"apu is voiced by hank azaria" is one truth. another version of the same truth is "hank azaria voices many/most of the simpsons characters" it's not like he was hired because the studio excluded indian actors, hank was just a talented dude and could voice literally everybody
Yeah, initial budgets are a bitch and many animated shows rely on voice actors to wear many hats. Being PC to appeal to a minority who complain just isnt in the budget a lot of times. And now that the character is like 20 years old it would be strange to change the voice actor. Although if they felt like cowtowing to these hateful whiners they could. Unsure how it would damage the character without seeing it first though.
I have to say, a video like this where Max shows a very level-headed, lucid, sober, and insightful side to himself regarding animation, as an animator himself, is something that I wish we saw more often on Brain Dump.
Reasons why this is the best episode of Brain Dump so far: Max makes good points Barely any goofball (sorry but he really gets in the way a lot) Sick Burns 🔥 Max sees both sides of the argument
Your love for Mario is similar to the love Mexicans have for Speedy Gonzalez. He's a fun representative of our culture. Do we have accents? Some us do. Do we wear sombreros? Its definitely part of the culture. Speedy is a representative of us in the Looney Tunes era where Mexicans were otherwise not represented at all. It was a fun tongue-in-cheek way to laugh at our own culture. Its possible for another culture to represent another as long as its not degrading. I have no problem with the legendary Mel Blanc voicing Speedy or the way he was represented because they weren't making fun of Mexican culture - Speedy has his own storylines. It feel like now everyone gets insulted too easily. I get that they have a right to voice how they feel, but at one point are they going to see themselves as possibly being too sensitive?
no I think it's just part of the new generation that becomes offended too easily, they've just become so loud and influential that most of the remaining crowd are essentially intimidated into agreeing with their hyper SJW views out of fear of being labeled as a close minded bigot if they disagree.
I and my friends are "this generation" and I dont think the number of offended people changed much but if you where offended by something 30 years ago you didn't have quick access to almost every other offended person on the planet. If you found something offensive before the Invention of the internet you could write to the news, the person doing the offending or the government, maybe complain to your mates at the pub. Blaming "the new generation" feels very lazy because weirdly all the rough and "offensive" comedy and animation from the 80 and 90s is HUGE in pop culture these days, video games are as gruesome as ever but now in hd and you can just look at dead bodies online instead of paying the weird stranger behind your local supermarket. So most of us clearly love offensive stuff.
Also you keep forgetting that today it might be the SJWs crying about some racially charged joke but just a minute later its some old rich guy crying about inclusive pronouns and people wanting to earn living wages. Or ben shapiro crying about the sesame street being liberal propaganda. Ben is like 35, why is he so easily offended if the "new generation" is the problem?
They literally made apu one of the smartest and friendliest characters on the show and was even part of the main cast at one point (hit and run.) and that still wasn’t enough for that obnoxious “comedian.”

Man so doing a binge watch of the entire series so far and decided to rewatch this video. It’s really sad to see that they basically axed Apu, but managed to get new VAs for Carl, Lou, and Dr. Hibbert that fit the roles really well. If anything despite this whole thing being a response to “Making sure minorities are better represented” the lack of Apu just comes off as “Your group is not important enough for us to bring Apu back despite every one loving this character”.
The absolute biggest example of voice actors not needing to match their character is when you realize the BUFF ass pillar and icon of sheer masculinity that is Goku is voice acted by a little old Japanese woman.
Remember when Cartoon Network stopped airing Speedy Gonzales because he was a harmful stereotype? Remember when Mexicans (like myself) complained about it because we actually love the character? Holy crap. You're genuinely quite an intelligent and wise human being. I've heard good points on this website before from many sides of many issues, but I don't think I've ever seen an argument on RUclips be presented in such an intelligent manner. I'm not just trying to jerk you off, I legitimately mean it. Your points were intelligently made and even respectful of the opposing side, regardless of a few jabs, something you never quite see on this bizzare internet. I'm not going to pretend that I know much about this issue, I've never really cared for the show, but I have legitimately never found an argument more compelling.
Why are accents considered racist? Like, if I'm trying to parody a person by asserting a stereotype then yeah, that's mean. But why is just doing an accent that's not yours automatically racist?
Most accents are exaggerated, so if you sound like that, people are automatically going to call you racist for exaggerating accents. Either that, or they hate that race, so they'll call you out for using that accent. Or they LOVE that race, in which case they'll hate you for mocking their language. Even worse is when they ARE a member of that race
Racism is the hatred of another person purely because of their skin tone. It's an unfounded fallacious response to a perfectly natural thing that people have, which cannot be controlled due to their genetics and birth. Using other cultures such as putting on an accent can be interpreted in many ways, some people may use an accent to mock that culture, some may do it out of love, others may just do it nonchalantly without caring because it's fun. All in all there are many ways to interpret words but there was only one intention when those words were said. The only reason why racism or the like is an issue is due to people being offended, and people wanting to prevent that. If we all developed enough of a personality to deal with it, such as playing off any comments that come your way, we would not have this issue. But because people have this idea of being good and virtuous and stopping all hardship in the world, they try to solve problems that don't really exist. It might be a modern thing from the SJW crowd, it might just be a thing ingrained in many people anyways, because it makes sense that people don't like some of the things that are said to them, so they think that if they make it so that nobody ever says that stuff, nobody gets harmed. But that's an extremely unproductive way of going about it. You cannot and arguably should not ever have people who decide how other people act socially. Stopping people from making remarks, be they harmful intentionally or not, is censorship. And censorship is arguably far more harmful than freedom of speech. All in all this discussion of racism and what should and shouldn't be allowed is just extremely tiring. It's not a good discussion because the people who advocate for more censorship mostly do it out of their own virtues, they make it out to be a benevolent act, but really it's extremely selfish and close minded. It's almost like they aren't willing to see the world for all the interesting colours and flavours it can be, so try to boil it down to just a few simple inoffensive terms to avoid being even the slightest bit sad on some days.
@@n0kt0h45 Greek here, and to be frank, I wouldn't have a problem with someone non-Greek impersonating the Greek accent. Most Greeks know how we sound to foreigners (when we try to speak English, at least) and we ourselves make fun of that fairly often. I believe the same would apply to other people as well.
Another great example of a character played by a voice actor pit of their race is Kratos. Kratos is white (not just in skin tone, he's Greek) and he's had two voice actors, both are black. And both do an incredible job
@@joemusfox well it's hard to actually be sure as to weather he should count or not. after all the definition of white is quite America centric so its hard to apply it outside America, some argue it to be skin color based, some European descent, others argue culture and et cetera. I like to argue a that white as a term is rather lazy as it forcefully group cultures together, the same goes for stuff like black or Asian. these terms may make sense to apply intercountry but don't function that well on a bigger scale, after all most people would rather default to their nationality or ethnicity over race, but if i am to entertain the notion of race. Kartos is white, the ancient Greek according to most get identified as white, while they have tan skin, tan skin is something any white person would develop living in a warmer climate.
As a Homosexual, any simpsons episode they've had depicting gay guys is outlandish and silly, but they've never been cruel or overtly false; they're cartoons being cartoony and overexaggerating. You're 100% right how it's 100% not wrong to enjoy a stereotype.
Apu has always come on the other side of a parody character, he is not flawed, he is hyper compentent. Problem is, he is stuck at a dead end job because his programing skills are useless even by the time the episode that showed he had a degree on programing on Punch Card Computers aired.
Couldn't he have just learned other forms of programming? It shouldn't have been that hard to grasp (he'd just be building on fundamental knowledge), the only thing holding him back would've been the cost. Although, i also don't know how expensive college was back when the Simpsons was airing.
Also punch card computers are still in use. The first machines controlled by computers were controlled with punch tape. CNC (computer numerical control) machines today were originally just called NC machines. Machines that have been well.maintained are still manufacturing parts, they just need people who know how to use them

Coming back to this video five years later and it still largely holds up! For the most part. My one note is that replacing voice actors with ethnic ones that match the ethnicity of the character on screen can be a good thing. I’m making this comment only about 16 minutes into the video, so I feel it necessary to claim that I’m unsure of Max’s stance on the matter circa 2018 and certainly in 2024. Regardless, I’ve found that ethnic voice actors often create rapport between their voice directors. Prolific, pre-established foreign voice actors (foreign media translations exist, wow!) will very regularly bring their linguistics knowledge with them, and that could range from regional dialects to better written dialog in different languages. TLDR: Language is a very complex thing, and when we write characters that might not speak the same language or have the same background as us it helps to have help from people with lived experiences from said cultures (or even cultures that inspired whatever fictional culture that’s being written about so long as it’s applicable. I.E: Xing from FMA:B isn’t called China but it’s still pretty much China)
@@TheIrreverentUncleAl I think it’s ridiculous to want to have repercussions in something as multi-faceted as acting. Not to mention the fact that industry standards change all the time, and it would be weird to punish people who abided by them until the court of public opinions deemed otherwise. Actors audition en masse, and get picked by a director based on their performance. Voice actors do the exact same, but they really can just ignore everything about a person and cast them based truly on what they sound like. For example, most animated children are played by a woman, a point I think Max himself made in the video. Another point Max made in his video was the fact that it’s stupid to penalize people for doing silly cartoon voices. Race and identity aren’t the end all be all when it comes to casting and there are plenty of times in voice acting where that’s the case and a director just picks someone based purely on what they thought of their performance. My argument is that race and identity help create more nuanced characters, and while I still think it’s true the simple truth is that that’s not always the case. Straight people will play gay people, white people voice act black people, so on and so forth. So long as there are people acting, be that on a theatre stage or in a voice-over booth there will be people cast in roles that don’t match up with their identity. And that’s okay.
I think one example of the point of why accents are important in voice acting is The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy; Maxwell Atoms didn't originally envision Grim as being Jamaican, but Greg Eagles decided to try a Jamaican accent in one take for his audition for the role, and he realized that was what was missing from his character, so an accent helped to create one of the most iconic Cartoon Network characters of all time.
i dont think people realize what the simpsons originally was. it was at first a kind of cartoon mocking popularity/trends, conservatism, religion, the government, media and the whole “nuclear family” type show that was basically every tv show in the 80’s it was a somewhat intelligent tv show with actual meanings and complex characters. now the show is literally what they once mocked

As a Scot who grew up watching the Simpsons every night, Willy was always my favourite character!
Hell ye m8 I'll drink to that
Stickursor Hey man, thank you for responding. I didn't intend to make it seem that I felt criminalised by black or indian communities, far from it, as a white person, I fully acknowledge that I have unfair privilege. My little anecdote at the end of my comment was more to the extremist social justice crowd who feel like being a privileged member of society invalidates your opinion (if that's what you're responding to, which I think it is) still, thank you for sharing, I've dealt with my fair share of skinheads and SDL/EDL and you definitely are right about them
standardleft I'd disprove your racist stereotype if it weren't for the drunk racist yelling about Polish immigrants outside my building right now

Uh...no you don't, dude. Trust me. You ever been white but forced to bathe out of a pot of stove-heated water because your family couldn't afford heated water due to difficult financial circumstances unrelated to ethnicity? I have. Exactly and its saving money
Hey there :p
Elmo guvn’a
Your love for Mario is similar to the love Mexicans have for Speedy Gonzalez.

Even worse is when they ARE a member of that race
repeat after me boys and girls
"voice acting is seamless!"
Yeh, especially when it's for a cartoon

Another excellent example is Samurai Jack
Kratos is not white, he is olive skinned. Watch the GOW1 flashback cutscenes. But yeah, he isnt black either

@@lukausedsteal1026 Holy crap, I could never achieve the time to type all that (thanks a lot ADD).
I think one example of the point of why accents are important in voice acting is The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy; Maxwell Atoms didn't originally envision Grim as being Jamaican, but Greg Eagles decided to try a Jamaican accent in one take for his audition for the role, and he realized that was what was missing from his character, so an accent helped to create one of the most iconic Cartoon Network characters of all time.
i dont think people realize what the simpsons originally was. it was at first a kind of cartoon mocking popularity/trends, conservatism, religion, the government, media and the whole “nuclear family” type show that was basically every tv show in the 80’s
it was a somewhat intelligent tv show with actual meanings and complex characters.
now the show is literally what they once mocked
never I think you mean from the 50s- the 80s
Eh still better than Modern Family Guy.
I'm german and the scene in The Simpsons where the germans are in hell and are going "What have we done to deserve this? Oh! Right..." is super hilarious to me.
Haha, ein Klassiker
They weren’t in hell, Homer as the blob ate them but that’s indeed what they said
you can't have comedy if you can't laugh at yourself
I love Willie and I think the stereotypes just make the character better as same with the others
I thought it was scarsam when you said it was funny XD
I reread it doe
Back four years later and I'm amazed by the positive reception. Zero dislikes!
Dang, 45 Minutes and a lot of effort was still put in this video!? Bless your soul.
