So, I just started lying telling everyone I was from Brazil, and this worked out for a while. Until one day an actual Brazilian student ended up in one of my classes and one of my classmates introduced me and here, I start speaking my broken Spanish..It was that DAY that the lie stopped and my ignorant lying a$$ discovered Brazilians do not speak Spanish....they speak Portuguese. Never wore a weave or pretended to be anything I am not ever again.

I’m half Chinese and half white, 4th generation Chinese American. With that being said… my family has little to no Chinese culture embedded into our lives. I’ve been trying to put more effort into tapping into my culture whether it be cooking, learning Chinese, learning historical arts, but I’ve found many people around me are uncomfortable with what I’m doing. I look more white than Asian and even my name is quite European, so many times my friends will forget I’m also Chinese and be uncomfortable that I mention Chinese cultural hobbies that I’ve picked up (it was just Chinese calligraphy and reading Chinese books). Even my mom, who is full Chinese, is uncomfortable. I know being exotic is fetishized and I saw it all through high school even if I was average looking, but being biracial is really tough being rejected from both sides of the coin. This trans race stuff makes it more difficult for biracial people who are struggling to connect back with their culture without meeting even more judgement and stigmatization along the way. And yeah, you shouldn’t care about what other people think. But it really feels terrible to be told you aren’t something when you are over and over again… so what am I in the end? Anyways this was a long rant but it’s all I could think of during the video. Being Asian is trendy and it seems to the people around me that all I want to do is fit in the trend, whereas really I’m just finally an adult who realizes what they missed out on growing up.

This is very real in southeast asia. As a Filipino, the ones perceived beautiful are the ones with east asian and western features. As someone with native features, I know I would never fit in to my country's beauty standards. However, I know in some country out there my features are being fetishized 😭 which sucks

Some of you seem to be forgetting that Ariana is also Italian. Now yes there’s the debate the not all Italians get that dark however….a lot of them do naturally tan very fast, and they do get very dark. Whenever that performance was in 2016, Ariana must’ve already been naturally very tanned and her makeup artists made things worse by adding too much bronzer to her body, and maybe even self tan to even everything out. Let’s not forget…..these artists do have a team of people, and part of their team includes makeup artists. All of those pictures of Ariana when she looked “black” were taken when she had her makeup done, so maybe look into who was doing her makeup back then and go after them.

I’m white, and when I look at Asian or black women, I often see facial traits that are very pretty that are less common in white women. So in a perfect world I could try to switch between and be everything or a combination of traits. But not one person can have every pretty trait. every race and ethnicity has different features that make them uniquely attractive. Even amongst asians, even amongst east asians, there are traits in Koreans that I see that I don't see in Chinese., There is genuinely so much beauty to be celebrated, I have observed this when I went to Ethiopia, to Israel, turkey, Korea, and I live in the US. so I have seen a variety of diverse races and ethnicities
It’s interesting that you say that because that perfectly aligns with the current plastic surgery trends. “Snatched” fox eyes = Asian. Full lips = Black. High Cheekbones = Latin etc. Celebrities in particular will pick and choose desirable features from other races and put them on their faces
As a 30 something-year-old I'm personally grateful that I had the chance of experiencing Brandy, Monica, Queen Latifah, MC light, Tatiana Ali, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, and Raven-Symone, and so on and so forth because it really shaped the fact that like it was OK that I didn't look like a Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, or Jennifer Lopez and I didn't need to be super thin or super girly. There was still a place for me essentially. Anybody who grew up after that time and I just looked back and I just think good luck.

It’s when a child of one race gets adopted by a family of another race, not necessarily a black child. As a transracial adoptee myself, these “transracials” would never want our problems.
That’s one way to use the word. But using it in the context of someone trying to physically change their body through surgery or other means to “match how they feel on the inside” is another valid use for the same word. If anything, people will understand the latter usage better because it better fits with the woke modern lexicon

Indian girl here. As you asked about bindi, the whole point of Indian aesthetic is to make you look mature and modest. Even Indian girls don't just wear traditional clothes for show. They wear it for special occasions to show women modesty and maturity. If Selena is using it in her video just like that which has seductive lyrics then its just not right because people who follow her will pick the tredn up but would never use this style with it's real meaning. My best friend is Indian-American (first generation), & most of the Indian culture & movies she & her parents showed me were very romanticized- no sex scenes, sometimes not even kissing. It was very modest. They even gave me a sari that they thought would look good on me (it didn't show the waist) but my best friend's sari did. Neither were supposed to be sexualized, they wore those outfits to birthdays, weddings, etc. My friend still dresses modestly & doesn't show off her body because that was just part of her culture. Yes, she had a sexual awakening like most teenagers/adults, but she wasn't using traditional outfits to pick up men. Selena Gomez has no business wearing simeone else's traditional garb to appear sexualized when they aren't even her traditions. It was as bad as Katy Perry going full Cleopatra, & Egyptians were offended by it. I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, but cultural appropriation and treating traditional wear like a costume without the respect it deserves is disrespectful.

On the note of being mocked because of your looks. As a white, very pale polish woman I had and still having my fair shear of such mistreatment. In early 2000 there was no make up produces of my skin tone, no "nude" underwear that matched me and I was bullied for being "sickly pale" or "white as flour". It get to the point where my mother (whom is almost as pale) feel need to put tanning products on herself almost weekly to match beauty standards that surrounded us. It was sad to see that even your mum doesn't consider your sheared trait as something good. Now, seeing so many whitening products, so many trends with pale skin tone it feels bittersweet. I'm glad we are mostly over the mismatched foundation colour but had we really had to go threw it to begin with?

Beauty products slowly started hitting shelfs and retailers mostly provided most common/demanded skin tones, which at that time was warm medium colours like sand and beige. People like me, with cool tones that fall in to ivory and porcelain, are still having problem with matching products. Think how many times have you seen foundation in "alabaster" type of shade. Funny thing is that I could use baby powder and it would be only slightly paler then needed :) You can literary see my veins so in some lights I appear blueish/greenish.

Im a white girl of russian and irish decent and even though I never wished I was another race, my grandmother was half central asian (Mongolian and uzbek). I was quite jealous of her eye shape because I found it so beautiful and interesting looking. Two of my cousins and my nephew both have eyes like hers so im glad the trait was passed on somewhere.

It's so interesting to see how people from different countries growing up have different experience when it comes to appearance. I was called a ghost or looking sick from being naturally very fair-skinned. When we were teenagers some parents gave money for tanning sessions and dad of my friend made her go there before prom. Also some might remember dark faces light neck situation from foundation. But honestly we should stop this obsession with colors of skin or hair or appearance trends. I used to be so insecure used filters and stuff but after I stopped engaging with insta/tiktok or yt short with makeup and lifestyle "it" girls content I feel myself much more confident and I started to see beauty in real people around me.

Funny story about black dolls, I used to love baby dolls when I was little, and my mom said I selected a black one myself at the store one time, and I had it for many years, my dad side of my family is mostly black and my nanny at the time also was black so baby me just saw something familiar with love, I think is very nice that we have more options of different coloured dolls today.
As a white person, the thing that angers me the most about fellow white people who try to change their race, either to look Asian or Black, is that when they get called out for things like doing braids which will most likely damage their hair, is that they then say "Oh but white people have braids too, look at the Vikings!" 1. You're gaslighting the people who are warning you that you will ruin your hair 2. That's a huge lack of knowledge about the diversity of European culture because there are different braids depending on each culture, and 3. Yes, we do have braids as well so why not embrace your own braids from your own culture which are made for your hair type?

To be honest, I ALWAYS used to wish I was white and American when I was a kid (not that long ago, like 7 years ago 😭) anyway, I'm pretty sure it was insecurity and the fact that I felt like I wasn't pretty enough as the way I am, which is pretty sad as again, I was young. I am a black South African girl and my ethnic group is Xhosa (*one of the many cultural groups we have here in SA) so growing up, I mostly watched and read American things and I think my understanding was, wow, these people (Americans) are everywhere, that must be because they are better than us and kinder people etc. my point is, it's not irrational to aspire to be like the people you see on TV but I wanted to be a WHOLE OTHER RACE and LOOK NOTHING LIKE MYSELF! wow, I'm glad you opened the conversation on this. I had always wanted to change my race. Growing up it was very hard to see any beauty in being black - it just didn't seem (to me, at least) to be valued or celebrated back in the 2000s. It was all about being white, white white! (nothing wrong with being a white girl, btw, - I think y'all are beautiful!) It's hard for me to judge because I understand where these insecurities come from. even now, I don't think I'll ever "live up" to the beauty standard, so i've kind of had to divorce myself from that and just be in my own lane.
Ever since i found your channel I've been loving every video. Love the topics and how you try to promote conversation about it. This rcta community is definitely nothing new. I think in the early 2010's and late 2000's there were people who really wanted to be east asian, Japanese in particular. Thinking of people like venusangelic and others. Funny how lots of the clips from tiktok have kpop videos for inspiration for their transformation. its always the most thin, light skinned examples and you'll never really see people wanting to race swap with south east asian and those of darker skin tones. It's always a matter of picking and choosing what they want from that race. I think some people are genuinely so disconnected from their lives and family that they would rather swap into something more "desirable". Either way... those who want to race swap likely aren't doing well mentally.
Looks, fashion, culture, etc has trending cycles. It is NOT hard to take eras and compare them to others (simply look at Western fashion trends and you can break them up in decades) It is not hard to understand why she made this video - K-Pop and East-Asian culture is highly favored at the moment (thanks to platforms such as TikTok and Netflix) People who are offended by the "darker than normal" Ariana picture, she was trying to be racially ambiguous and there is no denying it. She, like many other white women in the spotlight, tried to come across as racially ambiguous because it was what was "sexy/hot/desirable". Fast forward a few years and now looking/liking/being East-Asian everything is what is "sexy/hot/desirable"
plus that second photo of ariana, there’s pics of her from that same night. she looks the literal same. the only reason why she looks different in both pictures is because of makeup styles.

There used to be communities on livejournal for trans racial people and also other kin going back to like 2006 at the very least. Back then it was mostly people saying they were Japanese but I think with trends, now kpop is so much more popular, it went that way.

I grew up around the white side of my family so I always envied my cousin specifically bc she had blonde hair and blue eyes and I really thought my life would be easier and I would actually love myself. It took a longgggg time for me to be comfortable in my own skin and now I loveeeee the fact that I’m black and embrace it!
When I was little, I wished my skin looked black because I thought it looked soooo beautiful, like chocolate. I’m very pale LOL but I think it’s great to appreciate your own skin for what it is!
With your question at the beginning, as a white woman, I’ve wanted to basically be any other race but white, I find every race has their own unique beauty. I never went out of my way to “race change” or to “race bait/fish” but I have wished I had specific traits that other races had. I did feel guilty about having those thoughts though because I know it’s not as easy living as a POC compared to being a white woman. I’m happy and content with my race, and I love to acknowledge that everyone is beautiful!! :)
Hi there! I recently started watching your videos and I just love the way you express your opinions in such a calm and cool way. I agree with everything you said in this video. As an Indian, I will say that Selena Gomez wearing a bindi ten years ago isn't cultural appropriation, at least according to me. It does get annoying when Westerners take our cultural symbols and claim it as their own (eg: goop girl Gwyneth claiming that she popularized yoga), but them wearing/using Indian cultural symbols while acknowledging where it's originated from isn't wrong. People don't own a culture, so trademarking something like a bindi or a saree or even yoga is pretty stupid. Anyone can wear these, anyone can take part in these. As long as they're not mocking or making fun of the culture and its people, it's fine. I mean, we wear Western clothes like jeans-tshirts all the time. That doesn't make it cultural appropriation, just like how Selena wearing a bindi or Gigi wearing a saree isn't. Also would like to add something: just because an individual is wearing something that comes from a particular culture doesn't mean they have to recognize and talk about the entire history of that place/people/culture. I remember seeing people online being mad about Emma Chamberlain wearing a necklace (which was presumably Indian) w/o acknowledging the "oppression" and "colonization" that was associated with said necklace. Which is so stupid, according to me, because just because someone is wearing a piece of accessory doesn't mean they have to turn into Wikipedia pages about its history. Anyways, I'm all up for cultural appreciation and it's really fun to see non-South Asians add their own personal touch to our clothings or accessories, as long as they're not mocking us :) Hope that was helpful!
I’m white and from Brasil so my family is mixed, my younger brother is black and little sister white with 4c hair 😅 in my family we have from unties grandpas and grandmas that are black and black/indigenous so I have a lot of contact with customs/culture etc.. One thing I really appreciate about my relatives is the exchange of care and knowledge ab hair cair and skincare health.. some I can use but not everything is for me.. 🤷🏻♀️ One thing I always wanted as I was growing up was to have a sew in (my hair is straight so braids would be a major fail) 💀🤷🏻♀️.. Growing up, I experienced a loT of microaggressions about my appearance, and I lost a good amount of my self perception/sense of individuality to it because I was worried about being "bullied" by the white girls I grew up around for not being like the black people they saw on tv and not being able to successfully conform to their beauty/social standards n ideals. I'm in a much MUCH healthier space in my life because of discussions like this and honestly staying off social media :) I really liked that you shared that anecdote on the white Barbie v black Barbie - I experienced this as a little girl!! My mom brought me to toys r us and asked if I wanted a black barbie and I YELLED at her that "I want the White one!!!". And looking back, I did that for similar reasons, mostly because I saW white Barbie and that she was AccePTED, so that's why I wanted the white one. Because just like the black Barbie, I was considered inferior or "not the right one" so I felt that white Barbie would help me to further like, assimilate I guess in school and among the girls I went to school with. "have you ever wanted to change your race?" my god, the cultural shock I'm experiencing right now is INSANE. i think that's a question you could only ask to people from a certain place. Why? In recent years, I've seen people appropriate asian culture, follow me here, when years ago it was all about appropriating black or latin american culture, and i've seen influencers and celebrities switch races like it's underwear. And i find it interesting that i've seen that only because I consume and keep up with content from America, Canada, the UK, basically english speaking, first world, privileged countries. Thank you for your video. On the flip side, for many years Asian people have been bleaching their skin and having eye and nose surgery to appear Caucasian. I’ve been to Thailand and India and so much of their skincare contains ingredients to make them more fair. In the film industry (Bollywood and others) the fairer actors (also in Latin American countries) have more opportunities than actors who have darker skin. Re: the Asian fishing, stars like Bella Hadid and possibly Ariana Grande have had eye surgery (I think called fox eye) to make their eyes appear more Asian. It’s not reversible and it’s just sad that so many people don’t like their features. There are so many beautiful people all over the world and races should not be temporary fads - especially when people who adopt a race are not subjected to discrimination and most can change back to being white or the race they were born as.

I wished I was Japanese back when I was in high school (I graduated 15 years ago, so looking back at this is mega cringe). I'm biracial (black and white), but I've always looked ambiguous. Sometimes when people asked what race I am, they seemed disappointed when I told them that im half black. I was mistaken for Japanese a lot because I am short, and I was really skinny (I also straightened my hair). I grew up watching anime and listening to Jpop, so there was some idealizing going on. It took me a while to realize that people were being racist towards me, and instead of calling them out, I took it as being half Black was something to be ashamed of. I'm just glad that I've learned to accept myself for who I am, and i can love anime and kpop without making it my entire identity.

The problem now is that people often term everything appropriation. When wearing a saree correctly is appropriation….. we have created a set up that means it is almost impossible to explore other cultures. Also, this is very much western. People in Asia and many other places do not think about this issue in this way. Culture is formed from traditions. Traditions are ritual and restraint. Therefore, is it surprising it is disappearing in places where individual freedom is all people care about?
I also think the term is being over used. For some time, like a few months, I've been talking to a Korean man living in Korea since birth. I'm from Poland and we actively talked about our cultures, asked questions (he actually thought about moving here so understanding Polish culture was important to him). He once said that as a thank you for teaching him about my country and being interested and appreciating of his culture and media, he'll get me a hanbok, a traditional Korean clothing. He said that people in Korea love it when foreigners want to buy and wear them, and see hanboks as beautiful. Many of them encourage foreigners to try hanboks on and help them find the right colour etc etc. I think it's beautiful

They do not have good opinions about african people at all. Look up some of the things China has said and done for some colorful examples. And it does not stop there depending on what specific asian ethnicity you are other asians will be racist to you. Look up asian immigrant workers in Japan for a recent easy example. Racism being seen as bad and wrong at all is western. Often other asians are shamed within their own society if they get tanned as it is seen as low class… so no discrimination is very much a thing.

Plus theres a few white ppl that in the media got melanin injections so you are not reaching. Martina Big is the main example if you want to google about her. Another good example unfortunately was Brittany Murphy. She is white, but Italian. Lost a lot of weight, and dyed her hair blond. It's wild. I’m half Chinese and half white, 4th generation Chinese American. With that being said… my family has little to no Chinese culture embedded into our lives. I’ve been trying to put more effort into tapping into my culture whether it be cooking, learning Chinese, learning historical arts, but I’ve found many people around me are uncomfortable with what I’m doing.
I look more white than Asian and even my name is quite European, so many times my friends will forget I’m also Chinese and be uncomfortable that I mention Chinese cultural hobbies that I’ve picked up (it was just Chinese calligraphy and reading Chinese books). Even my mom, who is full Chinese, is uncomfortable.
I know being exotic is fetishized and I saw it all through high school even if I was average looking, but being biracial is really tough being rejected from both sides of the coin. This trans race stuff makes it more difficult for biracial people who are struggling to connect back with their culture without meeting even more judgement and stigmatization along the way.
And yeah, you shouldn’t care about what other people think. But it really feels terrible to be told you aren’t something when you are over and over again… so what am I in the end? Anyways this was a long rant but it’s all I could think of during the video. Being Asian is trendy and it seems to the people around me that all I want to do is fit in the trend, whereas really I’m just finally an adult who realizes what they missed out on growing up.

This is very real in southeast asia. As a Filipino, the ones perceived beautiful are the ones with east asian and western features. As someone with native features, I know I would never fit in to my country's beauty standards. However, I know in some country out there my features are being fetishized 😭 which sucks

Some of you seem to be forgetting that Ariana is also Italian. Now yes there’s the debate the not all Italians get that dark however….a lot of them do naturally tan very fast, and they do get very dark. Whenever that performance was in 2016, Ariana must’ve already been naturally very tanned and her makeup artists made things worse by adding too much bronzer to her body, and maybe even self tan to even everything out. Let’s not forget…..these artists do have a team of people, and part of their team includes makeup artists. All of those pictures of Ariana when she looked “black” were taken when she had her makeup done, so maybe look into who was doing her makeup back then and go after them.

I’m white, and when I look at Asian or black women, I often see facial traits that are very pretty that are less common in white women. So in a perfect world I could try to switch between and be everything or a combination of traits. But not one person can have every pretty trait. So I’m happy with the beauty I have, and I admire the beauty I see in others :) And by the way, you are so beautiful, just had to let you know :)
every race and ethnicity has different features that make them uniquely attractive. Even amongst asians, even amongst east asians, there are traits in Koreans that I see that I don't see in Chinese., There is genuinely so much beauty to be celebrated, I have observed this when I went to Ethiopia, to Israel, turkey, Korea, and I live in the US. so I have seen a variety of diverse races and ethnicities

As a 30 something-year-old I'm personally grateful that I had the chance of experiencing Brandy, Monica, Queen Latifah, MC light, Tatiana Ali, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, and Raven-Symone, and so on and so forth because it really shaped the fact that like it was OK that I didn't look like a Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, or Jennifer Lopez and I didn't need to be super thin or super girly. There was still a place for me essentially. Anybody who grew up after that time and I just looked back and I just think good luck.

That’s one way to use the word. But using it in the context of someone trying to physically change their body through surgery or other means to “match how they feel on the inside” is another valid use for the same word. If anything, people will understand the latter usage better because it better fits with the woke modern lexicon

Indian girl here. As you asked about bindi, the whole point of Indian aesthetic is to make you look mature and modest. Even Indian girls don't just wear traditional clothes for show. They wear it for special occasions to show women modesty and maturity. My best friend is Indian-American (first generation), & most of the Indian culture & movies she & her parents showed me were very romanticized- no sex scenes, sometimes not even kissing. It was very modest. They even gave me a sari that they thought would look good on me (it didn't show the waist) but my best friend's sari did. Neither were supposed to be sexualized, they wore those outfits to birthdays, weddings, etc. My friend still dresses modestly & doesn't show off her body because that was just part of her culture. Yes, she had a sexual awakening like most teenagers/adults, but she wasn't using traditional outfits to pick up men. Selena Gomez has no business wearing simeone else's traditional garb to appear sexualized when they aren't even her traditions. It was as bad as Katy Perry going full Cleopatra, & Egyptians were offended by it. I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, but cultural appropriation and treating traditional wear like a costume without the respect it deserves is disrespectful.

On the note of being mocked because of your looks. As a white, very pale polish woman I had and still having my fair shear of such mistreatment.
In early 2000 there was no make up produces of my skin tone, no "nude" underwear that matched me and I was bullied for being "sickly pale" or "white as flour". It get to the point where my mother (whom is almost as pale) feel need to put tanning products on herself almost weekly to match beauty standards that surrounded us. It was sad to see that even your mum doesn't consider your sheared trait as something good.
Now, seeing so many whitening products, so many trends with pale skin tone it feels bittersweet. I'm glad we are mostly over the mismatched foundation colour but had we really had to go threw it to begin with?

Beauty products slowly started hitting shelfs and retailers mostly provided most common/demanded skin tones, which at that time was warm medium colours like sand and beige. People like me, with cool tones that fall in to ivory and porcelain, are still having problem with matching products.

For this reason and because i’ve meet insecure people of their pale complexion (it seems insane for me cuz i was insecure of my olive color) , i decided to bleach my skin heavily since 4 years.

It's so interesting to see how people from different countries growing up have different experience when it comes to appearance. I was called a ghost or looking sick from being naturally very fair-skinned. When we were teenagers some parents gave money for tanning sessions and dad of my friend made her go there before prom. Also some might remember dark faces light neck situation from foundation.
But honestly we should stop this obsession with colors of skin or hair or appearance trends. I used to be so insecure used filters and stuff but after I stopped engaging with insta/tiktok or yt short with makeup and lifestyle "it" girls content I feel myself much more confident and I started to see beauty in real people around me.

Funny story about black dolls, I used to love baby dolls when I was little, and my mom said I selected a black one myself at the store one time, and I had it for many years, my dad side of my family is mostly black and my nanny at the time also was black so baby me just saw something familiar with love, I think is very nice that we have more options of different coloured dolls today.
As a white person, the thing that angers me the most about fellow white people who try to change their race, either to look Asian or Black, is that when they get called out for things like doing braids which will most likely damage their hair, is that they then say "Oh but white people have braids too, look at the Vikings!" 1. That's a huge lack of knowledge about the diversity of European culture because there are different braids depending on each culture, and 3. To be honest, I ALWAYS used to wish I was white and American when I was a kid (not that long ago, like 7 years ago 😭) anyway, I'm pretty sure it was insecurity and the fact that I felt like I wasn't pretty enough as the way I am, which is pretty sad as again, I was young. I am a black South African girl and my ethnic group is Xhosa (*one of the many cultural groups we have here in SA) so growing up, I mostly watched and read American things and I think my understanding was, wow, these people (Americans) are everywhere, that must be because they are better than us and kinder people etc. my point is, it's not irrational to aspire to be like the people you see on TV but I wanted to be a WHOLE OTHER RACE and LOOK NOTHING LIKE MYSELF! That has obviously changed and I'd like to say that I am very much proud to be black and even MORE proud to be South African and it's wonderful to see more people that are comfortable in there own skin so I hope I can prove to you that all it takes is some self discovery (I didn't know how to end it, sorry if this was long 🤭😝🥰)

wow, I'm glad you opened the conversation on this. I had always wanted to change my race. Growing up it was very hard to see any beauty in being black - it just didn't seem (to me, at least) to be valued or celebrated back in the 2000s. It was all about being white, white white! (nothing wrong with being a white girl, btw, - I think y'all are beautiful!) It's hard for me to judge because I understand where these insecurities come from. even now, I don't think I'll ever "live up" to the beauty standard, so i've kind of had to divorce myself from that and just be in my own lane.
Ever since i found your channel I've been loving every video. Love the topics and how you try to promote conversation about it. This rcta community is definitely nothing new. I think in the early 2010's and late 2000's there were people who really wanted to be east asian, Japanese in particular. Thinking of people like venusangelic and others. Funny how lots of the clips from tiktok have kpop videos for inspiration for their transformation. its always the most thin, light skinned examples and you'll never really see people wanting to race swap with south east asian and those of darker skin tones. It's always a matter of picking and choosing what they want from that race. I think some people are genuinely so disconnected from their lives and family that they would rather swap into something more "desirable". Either way... those who want to race swap likely aren't doing well mentally.
Looks, fashion, culture, etc has trending cycles. It is NOT hard to take eras and compare them to others (simply look at Western fashion trends and you can break them up in decades)
It is not hard to understand why she made this video - K-Pop and East-Asian culture is highly favored at the moment (thanks to platforms such as TikTok and Netflix)
People who are offended by the "darker than normal" Ariana picture, she was trying to be racially ambiguous and there is no denying it. She, like many other white women in the spotlight, tried to come across as racially ambiguous because it was what was "sexy/hot/desirable". Fast forward a few years and now looking/liking/being East-Asian everything is what is "sexy/hot/desirable"
plus that second photo of ariana, there’s pics of her from that same night. she looks the literal same. the only reason why she looks different in both pictures is because of makeup styles.
As a Nigerian I’m so offended because those are Black American stereotypes. At least use the correct stereotypes. She could have said be loud, blunt and eat Jollof everyday😂

There used to be communities on livejournal for trans racial people and also other kin going back to like 2006 at the very least. Back then it was mostly people saying they were Japanese but I think with trends, now kpop is so much more popular, it went that way.
I’m Asian Hispanic and there were times where ppl would say “ewwwww” at my school lunch but I stayed confident and I ate my lunch like I didn’t give a f. But I love my background and the cultures that I am. I have grown to love my mixed ethnicity.
I’m Native Hispanic and people always think I’m Asian. I was bullied all throughout school because of my eyes and even my own Whitexican grandfather would belittle me for it and stretch his eyes out at me and tell me to “go back to North Korea” lmao.

I was the same way! I grew up around the white side of my family so I always envied my cousin specifically bc she had blonde hair and blue eyes and I really thought my life would be easier and I would actually love myself. It took a longgggg time for me to be comfortable in my own skin and now I loveeeee the fact that I’m black and embrace it!
When I was little, I wished my skin looked black because I thought it looked soooo beautiful, like chocolate. I’m very pale LOL but I think it’s great to appreciate your own skin for what it is!

With your question at the beginning, as a white woman, I’ve wanted to basically be any other race but white, I find every race has their own unique beauty. I never went out of my way to “race change” or to “race bait/fish” but I have wished I had specific traits that other races had. I did feel guilty about having those thoughts though because I know it’s not as easy living as a POC compared to being a white woman. I’m happy and content with my race, and I love to acknowledge that everyone is beautiful!! :)

As an Indian, I will say that Selena Gomez wearing a bindi ten years ago isn't cultural appropriation, at least according to me. It does get annoying when Westerners take our cultural symbols and claim it as their own (eg: goop girl Gwyneth claiming that she popularized yoga), but them wearing/using Indian cultural symbols while acknowledging where it's originated from isn't wrong. People don't own a culture, so trademarking something like a bindi or a saree or even yoga is pretty stupid. Anyone can wear these, anyone can take part in these. As long as they're not mocking or making fun of the culture and its people, it's fine. I mean, we wear Western clothes like jeans-tshirts all the time. That doesn't make it cultural appropriation, just like how Selena wearing a bindi or Gigi wearing a saree isn't.
Also would like to add something: just because an individual is wearing something that comes from a particular culture doesn't mean they have to recognize and talk about the entire history of that place/people/culture. I remember seeing people online being mad about Emma Chamberlain wearing a necklace (which was presumably Indian) w/o acknowledging the "oppression" and "colonization" that was associated with said necklace. Which is so stupid, according to me, because just because someone is wearing a piece of accessory doesn't mean they have to turn into Wikipedia pages about its history.
Anyways, I'm all up for cultural appreciation and it's really fun to see non-South Asians add their own personal touch to our clothings or accessories, as long as they're not mocking us :)

I’m white and from Brasil so my family is mixed, my younger brother is black and little sister white with 4c hair 😅 in my family we have from unties grandpas and grandmas that are black and black/indigenous so I have a lot of contact with customs/culture etc.. One thing I really appreciate about my relatives is the exchange of care and knowledge ab hair cair and skincare health.. some I can use but not everything is for me.. 🤷🏻♀️ One thing I always wanted as I was growing up was to have a sew in (my hair is straight so braids would be a major fail) 💀🤷🏻♀️.. But I learned to love from afar 💜 Don’t know why ppl can’t do the same

Growing up, I experienced a loT of microaggressions about my appearance, and I lost a good amount of my self perception/sense of individuality to it because I was worried about being "bullied" by the white girls I grew up around for not being like the black people they saw on tv and not being able to successfully conform to their beauty/social standards n ideals. I'm in a much MUCH healthier space in my life because of discussions like this and honestly staying off social media :)
I really liked that you shared that anecdote on the white Barbie v black Barbie - I experienced this as a little girl!! My mom brought me to toys r us and asked if I wanted a black barbie and I YELLED at her that "I want the White one!!!". And looking back, I did that for similar reasons, mostly because I saW white Barbie and that she was AccePTED, so that's why I wanted the white one. Because just like the black Barbie, I was considered inferior or "not the right one" so I felt that white Barbie would help me to further like, assimilate I guess in school and among the girls I went to school with. "have you ever wanted to change your race?" my god, the cultural shock I'm experiencing right now is INSANE. i think that's a question you could only ask to people from a certain place. Why? In recent years, I've seen people appropriate asian culture, follow me here, when years ago it was all about appropriating black or latin american culture, and i've seen influencers and celebrities switch races like it's underwear. And i find it interesting that i've seen that only because I consume and keep up with content from America, Canada, the UK, basically english speaking, first world, privileged countries. At least where i live, the concept of wanting to change your race or even asking that question out sounds DERANGED. Like we got other problems 😭 I'm sincerely sending so much healing energy and love to y'all cause this is .... sum else.
Thank you for your video. On the flip side, for many years Asian people have been bleaching their skin and having eye and nose surgery to appear Caucasian. I’ve been to Thailand and India and so much of their skincare contains ingredients to make them more fair. In the film industry (Bollywood and others) the fairer actors (also in Latin American countries) have more opportunities than actors who have darker skin.
Re: the Asian fishing, stars like Bella Hadid and possibly Ariana Grande have had eye surgery (I think called fox eye) to make their eyes appear more Asian. It’s not reversible and it’s just sad that so many people don’t like their features. There are so many beautiful people all over the world and races should not be temporary fads - especially when people who adopt a race are not subjected to discrimination and most can change back to being white or the race they were born as.

I wished I was Japanese back when I was in high school (I graduated 15 years ago, so looking back at this is mega cringe). I'm biracial (black and white), but I've always looked ambiguous. Sometimes when people asked what race I am, they seemed disappointed when I told them that im half black. I was mistaken for Japanese a lot because I am short, and I was really skinny (I also straightened my hair). I grew up watching anime and listening to Jpop, so there was some idealizing going on.
It took me a while to realize that people were being racist towards me, and instead of calling them out, I took it as being half Black was something to be ashamed of.
I'm just glad that I've learned to accept myself for who I am, and i can love anime and kpop without making it my entire identity.

My jaw fr drops when I hear anyone say they'd rather be white than embrace their own stunning beauty. When I was younger (10ish too) I literally would've been happy being ANY other race than white. I thought I was so boring. Ig people always want what they don't have, like the grass is always greener on the other side thing, but I think it's soooo important we all come to terms and love who we all are, and we stop trying to change ourselves based on people's and our own unrealistic standards.

I'm mixed, I'm white, although my mother is black. I admit I'm a bit lost in my identity. People try to label me. I'm rejected as much by whites as by blacks. But I've come to realize that it doesn't matter to me, and that I'm unique in my identity.

The problem now is that people often term everything appropriation. When wearing a saree correctly is appropriation….. we have created a set up that means it is almost impossible to explore other cultures. Also, this is very much western. People in Asia and many other places do not think about this issue in this way.
Culture is formed from traditions. Traditions are ritual and restraint. Therefore, is it surprising it is disappearing in places where individual freedom is all people care about?
I also think the term is being over used. For some time, like a few months, I've been talking to a Korean man living in Korea since birth. I'm from Poland and we actively talked about our cultures, asked questions (he actually thought about moving here so understanding Polish culture was important to him). He once said that as a thank you for teaching him about my country and being interested and appreciating of his culture and media, he'll get me a hanbok, a traditional Korean clothing. He said that people in Korea love it when foreigners want to buy and wear them, and see hanboks as beautiful. Many of them encourage foreigners to try hanboks on and help them find the right colour etc etc. I think it's beautiful

I definitely see what you mean but you also have to understand that Asians in Asia don't deal with racism and fetishization in their own countries from their own people. I myself am an Asian American experience Racism that an Asian in a more homogeneous country wouldn't experience. So it makes sense that western Asians would be more particular about it
@@XxcelestialgirlxX That sounds so absurdist to me. I lived in Asia and racism is alive and well there. It is in fact standard to be racist there. They do not have good opinions about african people at all. Look up some of the things China has said and done for some colorful examples.
And it does not stop there depending on what specific asian ethnicity you are other asians will be racist to you. Look up asian immigrant workers in Japan for a recent easy example. Racism being seen as bad and wrong at all is western. Often other asians are shamed within their own society if they get tanned as it is seen as low class… so no discrimination is very much a thing.
There's a whole website that advertises changing your race, I forgot what its called. A RUclipsr talked about it years ago. Plus theres a few white ppl that in the media got melanin injections so you are not reaching. Martina Big is the main example if you want to google about her. Another good example unfortunately was Brittany Murphy. She is white, but Italian. Lost a lot of weight, and dyed her hair blond. It's wild. This is interesting non the less cus i never heard of this tiktok trend. Pretty cringe lol. Thanks for sharing this.
