  • Ego sum panis vivus
    Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-94)
    St. Bartholomew's Choir
    Paolo Bordignon
    Organist and Choirmaster
    Ego sum panis vivus.
Patres vestri manducaverunt manna in deserto, et mortui sunt.
Hic est panis de cœlo descendens:
Si quis ex ipso manducaverit, non morietur.
    I am the living bread.
Your ancestors ate manna in the desert and are dead.
This is the living bread that comes down from heaven,
Whoever eats of it shall not die.
    Words: John 6:48-50

This performance brings me to tears nowadays . I don’t know what could have been my reaction had I heard it during the pandemia ……. I probably wouldn’t have stopped crying …… Thanks to God for the life of each member of this choir

Gostaria de saber como vocês conseguem cantar tão juntos por uma espécie de chamada de vídeo! É muito complicado isso! Está muito bonito!

Wow. Before watching this, I felt as if no possible good could come from this pandemic. What you did in "remotely" creating this "polyphony" - rich in antiquity and tradition, expressed with technology only created and made possible in the very most recent moments of human memory - is breathlessly rich in meaning. I suppose you did this intentionally, which is utterly stunning. The 21 of you - three rows of seven - brought me to my knees. And the Latin meaning of your song - "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35) - is not lost on me. These are words of a sustaining hope in something simultaneously beyond our world and yet intimately present right in front of our faces. What poured from your mouths was, in my view, nothing less than a sort of prophetic 'divine pronouncement' about this moment in history, a word of hope and healing that can only uttered in rhythm and verse.
I want to say I'm lost for words, but clearly, I am not. So thank you, thank you, thank you! I'd like to conclude with four very commonly misused words that seem quite appropriate and powerful to express my gratitude:
    Holy Hell! Jesus Christ!
