- With Christmas coming up why not make a few of your presents instead of buying them! Over the next couple of weeks we will be uploading a series of easy DIY films to give you some ideas!
We revisit Dave Watson as she shows us how to make your very own whistle using elder wood. Elder Wood is the perfect wood for this job due to its very soft pith that can be easily removed to create a hollow tube. What sounds will your whistle make?
Thank you, this video is very clear and concise. I'm getting some elder wood soon and will use this video to help me form the whistle. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
My dad made these whistles for us as we grew up. That was 50 years ago. Thanks for jogging my memory. I'll be making this for my grandsons. Sorry that I was missed a generation. 😂
Wow, so glad that our short film reminded you of that, lucky grandsons!
I have the same story as Craig Crandall, another poster here. I remember my Dad and Granddad making these. My Granddad's family were all Itinerant wood workers travelling with the Forestry Commission felling trees. I have made these for my now grown up Sons and my Daughter and I'm happy to say all three can build a fire to cook on and then leave the ground with no sign we have been there. My eldest Grandson is 7 so now my youngest Son and I have started taking him out and teaching him some basic wood-crafting skills. If passing on a little bit of survival skills and respect for the woodlands is my legacy I think I will be happy with that.
Nice video. Simple & effective. Please keep them coming.
Really glad you liked it. We will keep them coming!
I can remember my father making me these when I was young...😃👍
Some stories say you should ask permission from the elder before you cut it. Excellent tutorial!
Thanks! We are glad you enjoyed it
First. Love these videos
Thank you! Keep your eyes peeled for weekly uploads
Make a bamboo flute like David carrodine used in kill bill, I’ve looked online and can’t find a video showing a long one.
Somehow this has been very frustrating for me, tried 8 different times during the course of 9 hours yesterday and still have not had any luck getting the dang thing to make a sound. Any other tips. ?
I made it with Stodoys plans!
Talk in inches
Why not barleycorns, or palms?
