Seeing this video reminded me of my grandmother who use to make smaller whistles for us in the 70s with Willow here in the States . Thank you for keeping a old tradition alive .
Thank you, I have been making these for a few years now, but some worked and some not, it seemed magic, but I can make one in like just 3 to 4 minutes, cause I have failed so many. Your explanation about how the soundhole and the airflow makes so much sense, I will try it first thing in the morning. Maybe this years season is saved😁
That moment when he pulls off the bark - blew my mind! Thanks for this video, gotta try it myself - I love the sound of overtone flutes! Got a question though: Is there a way to change the pitch of the flute, for example if it's in C but I want it to play a D as the lowest note? Just cut it off until my tuner shows a D?
Well yours certainly sounds better than mine did, I am happy that you have made a video on it, with your guidance I am getting a better understanding of how to improve my next one.Hitting the bark all over really helps to get it off, this morning I tried it on a 2cm diameter piece and slid bark off intact. I am going to let it dry out (with some paper stuffed in the ends so it stays round) to see if I can make a more long lasting flute.
would probably work with any supple wood that has a "smooth" bark like the willow if the bark is too hard or brittle it would just crack and break when you were beating it loose from the branch
I love how it sounds. Also it seems like I can do one myself. I'll definitely try this spring! I can't play flute or any instrument at all but it's never late to learn
Beautiful piece of work, entertainement and culture. I just discovered you and I’m enjoying your wisdom so much. Thank you for sharing it. Love from Andalucía in Spain.
morgen probeer ik deze eens.. dacht even dat ik te laat was maar de upload datum komt mooi uit.. thanks for this great tutorial, if i screw up next try will be a pvc one :p and what amazing instruments you make and play, keep at it!!!

my grand father show me the same (southern Poland), but the flute was cut perpendiculary and one blows not from a side but directly, like in commercial flute bougth in shop.

Hi Winne, new subscriber here. I was wondering if you could ever make a video on how you hollow out a wood/branch. Or do you split the wood in two and glue it afterwards? A few words would be helpful as well.
is it possible to make one like this without it being made from willow? is it possible to construct the same fipple type mechanism from wood? i've wanted to make flutes for a long time. i make european bagpipes with a single reed but want to try a flute

Winne many thanks. My father did it for me very often when we were in the woods. Shame on me I have made no one for my sons. Hey, fathers don't forget as I did!
in Poland it is called "fujarka Postna" it is an ancient folk instrument of Polish. Highlander music in Poland is based on the scale of this instrument, it is a pity that you did not put the Polish name.

Het klinkt als een mooie project om met de kinderen samen te maken! Bedankt!
This sound permeates the Norwegian folk music. Thank you for this tutorial!
That's the best tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you!

The magic of an ephemeral music instrument.

I would guess that's how you do it, with baby steps as he said
Fantástico, parece que foi uma aula de um viajante medieval que para alegra-se constrói flautas com o material que a natureza oferece. Show!!!

Wow! Magical bark removal. I always wish I was there making these too....love the process. Can the bark be slip off of other woods too?
Ive manged small whistles with hazel
populus species work well, too (aspens, cottonwood, balsam poplar).

In Slovakia such flutes are called "koncovka", for obvious reasons.
Thank you very much.
If you video tape how you blow the mouth piece, this video will be perfect!!
I do not know how you blow the air.
I wonder, will this work if i use bamboo?
I want to copy this Willow Bark " Embouchure" method, and use it with a bamboo.
Juan Iribarren there is a bamboo video buy a guy on RUclips. He does it with a Swiss Army knife

hey, did you have any success?

i love the vid
thanks!
This knife is good, I'm from Brazil, and I think this tree is call "Salgueiro" here.
Fiquei curioso sobre qual espécie de árvore nativa do Brasil seria ideal pra conseguir essa técnica...
Mas essa madeira que o cara usou é o salgueiro mesmo, que é a árvore típica de Europa.
I would love to learn how to make one from bamboo
just go for it!

sure I make these in solid wood as well :))
Hi, this is very cool, is there any extra holes on the flute? or is it totally controlled by the finger closing the other end?
Yes
Thumbs up! That was great... : )
So cool! Even after hitting it quite hard though I find it very hard to remove the bark, do you have any advice?:)
You can also loosen the bark a bit by bendin the stick over your knee, that will help

I think that owl or whatever it is in the background has already made his whistle!
My man said “lick the wood” lol 3:00
Is there no way to preserve the flute? I guess it's best to make from PVC if not
fun
:-)
Wow, what is this flute called?
Does it dries well. Or does it break?
Really cool trick and well explained.
And amazing song
'Gently insert it' is the worst pillow talk ever.
lick... the wood
But pretty good willow talk.
Its willow talk xD
It gets hotter when he talks about being able to move it back and forth 1-2 millimetres. Sploosh.
does it have to be willow or does any wood work
That's amazing. Love it but how does the sound change?
The sound is gone after 1 or 2 days when the bark shrinks
You made nice sounds, but how?
@@Dan-qu8qs you might havr found the answer by now, but to make different tones, you vary the strength of your blow. there might be a bietter way to explain it, but just trying things out might work best, if all else fails
@1fujara you just put it in water, thsts where the saying, wet your whistle comes from. It swells it back up to use again
can i make this out of a bamboo
I’m curious what species of willow one can use.
all species with smooth branches and not to many side branches or knots
You said that when the bark dried the flute stop working, but what if I put oil on it ?
the flute stops working because the bark will shrink. oil won't stop it from doing that. you could keep it moist if you want to play it longer
@@1fujara Ok. Thank you very much.
Do you know if Weeping Willow works the same for this as White Willow? There are a few weeping willows near me, but I live in North America.
Yes, weeping willow works.
But how do you play so many different notes? I see the finger tapping but I'm just managing to make two different notes
Hi.
I tried this. But the tune is very high and only present when I put my finger on the tube. What's the error?
How much do you sell that?
I don't sell these, they only work for a day or two when made of bark :) I sell them made out of wood though: fujaraflutes.com

You can be sure all folks living where willows were have invented the same instrument and process. ;) .
🤯🤘
Bast verwijderen lukt me niet. Misschien nog te vroeg in het seizoen?
Try it when the first leaves grow in the spring or after a good rain.
Can you tell me exactly what species of willow you use to do this with?? (A latin name would be helpful.)
There isn't a particular type. I've done it with birch too. You just need smooth bark that can come off of the branch. Do it when the sap is running.
Romanian shepards do something similar
