    There is a reason I have rather go watch a metal show in some small, dingy club with a bunch of drunk metalheads than give TicketMaster and Live Nation a dime. I was thinking to see Slaughter to Prevail and then when I saw their price of $64. I was like hell f**king no. They aren't worth that much to go watch them perform

    Isn’t 90% of the problem the advent of scalpers using bots to buy nearly all of the tickets day one? Face value tickets aren’t too expensive at all, but you never get them for that price.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial
      @themetalmeltdownofficial  5 месяцев назад +8

      Definitely part of the reason: bots and scalpers are out of hand and Live Nation/Ticketmaster does nothing about them, but the reason they do nothing is because they don't need to. They get their money, the monopoly strengthens, and thats all that matters to them.

    • @jackcoleman1784
      @jackcoleman1784 5 месяцев назад +4

      That's one issue but the real issue is Ticketmasters lack of interest in doing anything about it because they still get paid whether it's a bot or a real person. Even when you get a ticket it's full of BS tacked on fees that will make the ticket price exorbitantly more expensive. I bought three tickets to an arena show last year and the fees alone doubled the price. There are a ton of other issues as well such as them controlling over 70% of the market which is how they're able to charge said fees. And the fact that they either own or exclusively contract with the majority of venues over a certain size. Pearl Jam tried to do something about Ticketmaster and they were basically almost completely unable to tour for years because they couldn't do business with Ticketmaster. And that was over a decade ago now it's much worse.

    • @allforhim2009
      @allforhim2009 5 месяцев назад

      Just doubt that splitting this “monopoly” up will solve the problem. Bots/scalpers are a modern day problem with nearly every purchasable good in high demand.

    • @jackcoleman1784
      @jackcoleman1784 5 месяцев назад

      @@allforhim2009 The argument for why it would is that the reason scalpers are so prevalent is because Ticketmaster refuses to do anything about it. Why is that? Because they don't have to. They get paid either way and they have no competition so their customers can't take their business elsewhere to someone who will try to stop scalpers. Some people are also concerned that with some artists this may not even be bots just Ticketmaster trying to create an artificial scarcity to drive up prices long term.

    Honestly the only thing that is keeping me going to gigs is most of the venues I go to are smaller ones so tickets are actually affordable. Looking at the cost of the gigs I've attended this year plus the ones I have booked that's Svalbard, Myrkur, Wolves In The Throne Room (+GAEREA), Alcest and more before getting to what one of those Green Day tickets would have cost me. Support smaller venues (and artists) wherever possible!

I'll go see my bucket list bands (not many left) but the rest are too damn expensive for what they are. Not blaming the bands. • @mediumvillain
    @mediumvillain 5 месяцев назад

    One can only hope, but remember, it was the US government that allowed Ticketmaster and Live Nation to merge in the first place despite monopolistic practices from both in the 80s, 90s & 00s. The DoJ forced them to accept a consent decree after the merger and then IMMEDIATELY had to sue them for retaliating against venues for selling tickets elsewhere, which of course did nothing to curb their practices (as these things never do) bc fining a monopolistic megacorporation is merely the cost of doing business.
    The bottom line is that in US law monopolies are NOT ACTUALLY ILLEGAL. Paradoxically, it's only 'monopolistic practices' that are illegal (the only way a monopoly can exist in the first place).

    Fortunately, I don't listen to any of the bland tweenie pop, R&B, bro country or butt rock churned out by the corporate music widget machine, so what Live Nation does has little effect on me. Most of the shows I see cost well under $100.00.
    But I'm hoping if this lawsuit is successful, it will eventually have the effect of ensuring that artists start getting paid decent money again.
    Artists used to make their living through live shows and merch sales, but these days, the venues are taking most of that money.
    Unless you're a Taylor Swift or a Rihanna, it's very difficult to make a living. I see some of the places where my favorite musicians live through pictures they post on social media, and it shocks me.
    These are rock and roll musicians! They should be living in nice houses and driving nice cars. But half of them are lucky to be able to afford a two bedroom apartment in a lower middle class neighborhood.
    That shit's fucked up.
