BIG SHARK IN UK WATERS WHILE JET SKI FISHING PEMBROKSHIRE SOUTH WALES

- While fishing I spotted a huge shark - much longer than my waverunner but dont have a clue what it was??? Sorry for the bad language but the average yorkshire man doesnt come across a shark everyday! especially one this big!
There are a few reasons why I'm convinced that the footage shows a basking shark. Firstly, the footage is apparently from the UK coastline and it's a known fact that basking sharks are to be found in these waters. Secondly, the sedate manner of its swimming at the surface is characteristic of basking sharks as they are filter feeders and spend most of their time at the surface, hence it's name: basking shark (admittedly, however, other sharks - including great whites - can swim slowly at the surface, too). Thirdly, there is a brief point around 1:18 into the footage when you can observe a larger section of its caudal fin and the subterminal notch (i.e. the 'extra' flap near the top of the tail) it's that of a basking shark. The great white shark's subterminal notch isn't as pronounced as that of the basking shark.
With regards to great white sharks, the nearest verified sighting of one to UK waters was off the coast of La Rochelle, France, in 1977. That's approximately 400 miles south of South Wales.
Basking sharks are born far larger than that.
It was more likely a blue shark, as they are very common in that area, and are the right size and shape.
@@mrianwonder6527could also be a shortfin mako or porbeagle, the later have been filmed as far in as right beside the rocks in Pembrokeshire before where there was line fishing going on. Also the fact the man in this video was fishing suggests to me that could be why the shark was attracted to the area in the first place. Personally I would never rule out the possibility of great whites in Pembrokeshire, the area has several seal colonies and I have heard first hand from marine life tour operators who have seen large predatory sharks that were definitely not basking sharks in Pembrokeshire waters, and these people see enough basking sharks to tell the difference.
As a recently qualified keyboard marine biologist ,I can allay everybody's fears ,this is not a great white shark ! but quite clearly and without doubt ,a near record ten spined stickleback!!!.
I'm not a biologist but I do have a serious interest in zoology. The main reason I am sure White sharks are present in the Channel at least is that a man who I respect and trust implicitly told me he saw one very clearly and very closely. He is a pilot and also sails his yacht out of Salcombe in South Devon. He saw the shark on one of his trips about 2 miles off the coast at a,place called the Skerries Bank off Dartmouth. He was, able to be certain as the shark was in calm clear water at a depth of about 2 feet and crucially he had, the year before been in a cage in the water off the coast of South Africa watching them first hand. Anecdotal of course but an extremely reliable source in my opinion. Cheers guys.
Rob Lawrie nope
RL: Which means your buddy almost certainly saw a Porbeagle. Build-wise it is like a 'miniature' great white, cylindrical, stocky, large dark eyes, similar body colouration (although 'colour' is hard to determine through water distortion). It's also a species known to frequent UK waters. It's a great tale, but unlikely to be Carcharodon Carcharius.
Noo, Porgies are common as muck in our waters in Cornwall and between us my mate and I must have caught 30 or 40 of them. No, certainly not mistaken in that regard.
Herb Coswell Is God he said it was 2ft down in clear water. It could have been 30ft of water, but top 2ft was clear and this is where the shark was.
I'm not a marine biologist either and I also have a very keen interest zoology.......I once fucked a dolphin.......great white all day long for me....
100% a basking shark. The way it moves and its size and fins. At that size it could only be a basking shark, white shark or large mako or porbeagle but nether of those sharks move like that. You can see lots of basking sharks off the Cornish coast with binoculars and if you are lucky they often come in very close to some popular beaches. It is very likely that white sharks visit our waters but it's no cause for concern as even in places where they are abundant they are rarely seen or come into contact with people. They are more likely to swim off which is also why this is a basking shark as it wasn't spooked by the jet ski.
What a big baby! not the shark the yorky lol. Only one can of Cider on board! if you had drank 2 you would of jumped of the jet ski and grabbed it and single handed swam the shark to shore. Bloody northeners have no idea how to fish. Nice video TY
I, a marine bisologist, declare this to be a German stingray.
These are amongst the most peaceful animals in the world, unless you insult it's mother, and then they are prone to robbing your house during the summer holidays
It's almost certainly a basking Shark, the waters off the a Welsh coast from South West to North are one of the best places in the world to see them, it's quite a commonly known fact too? But being from Yorkshire maybe you wouldn't know, there are loads of clips on RUclips just the same actually...
Chris Dans also commonly known that white sharks visit British Walter get off you high horse you know fuck all
Reece Wright you meke up this stupid fact, common in british water? Wtf are you on....you can't even spell!
That's a big shark for the uk cause I live there
... and you can tell from a video that shows nothing in it🤷🏼♂️
there is nothing stopping a great white from coming into uk waters, there are lots of seals and prefer cold water, however this is likely a basking shark, feeding, still a great experience.
Settle down folks! This shark only eats the tiniest of morsels in the seas and oceans! Look at the leisurely way it was swimming! Most likely, as said before, a Basking Shark and harmless to humans!
Saw them quite few times on days off from Refineries, Porpoises, Dolphins, Peregrines, Seals etc, great place if you’re into wildlife
That's a basking shark, how cool.
Great white's distribution just about avoid UK waters, there's a small possibility that they would stray into British water, however it's most likely a basking shark.
If it's not a Basker It may be a Thresher Shark....it's one or the other, Threshers are 99% of the time mistakingly claimed to be Great White sightings in UK waters...
Chris L 100% not a thresher, the tail was way to small in proportion to its dorsal fin to be a thresher
British water condition are perfect for great white sharks, the water in South Africa is far colder than the water in Cornwall. Sharks that have been tracked have been found to travel 100s of miles from one country to another, some even pass through the English Channel.
At 2:10-2:16 i saw splashes on the right next to the cliff.waves hitting the rocks or could somthin b feeding at surface...id bet theres G.W.s in these waters, there are seals and shark hiding spots along the surf...Canada's has them in there chilly waters🤷
2 fins up definitely basking shark just below surface
Looks like a Young basking Shark or a Young great white, the dorsal fin and the tail look similar to each other, but this one was curious about you, basking Sharks dont behave like that, i Think you met a great White :)
I'd say a young basking shark based on the dorsal fin shape as well as the movement of the shark, also extremely unlikely to be a great white, if it was anything it'd more likely be a Porbeagle, they're far more common in UK waters
I was thinking porbeagl too but they have a rounder dorsal fin, this was pointy, but i hope for everyone in northern europe thats its just a basking one and the Whites stay the hell away from our Waters, scares the shit outta me
I'm fucking off!!! classic northern
It's not a fu****g shark,it's a basking shark.......I hope.🦈
Clearly not a Thresher Shark the tail fin is nowhere near long enough, I would say Basking but I'd say it is a little small for a Basking, could be a smaller Basking, although it is hard to determine the size with nothing to compare with, I'd guess it was 2-3m from Dorsal fin to tail fin, could be a Porbeagle, Blue Shark, Short Fin Mako but Basking's do like to swim near the surface so I'd say it's likely one.
+Rich Pianabol ... Clearly is a Thresher and mainly because the tail is visible and clearly long?
+Artiz...Retracted... sorry you are right it clearly is a Basking shark... humble apologies.
Artiz haha no problems;)
Strongbow!
Paddy McGuiness meets Basking Shark...
Gary Ford Come on Gary mate!!!! With a beautiful British name like Gary surely you can tell the difference between a Yorkshire man and a Lancashire man!? 😂🤦🏼♂️
I think he's gonna need a bigger jet-ski.
We`re gonna need a bigger ski lol
Why didn't you try to catch it with ya rod.
ding dang doooo
Better than average white but not a great white
King simpleton of the seas,it's a fucking basking shark.
Mark Hepworth lol listen at princess mark trying to sound tuff 😂😂😂
Basking shark.
''I'm Fucking Off''
From the spacing of dorsal to tail fin , I'd estimate that it was a Basking shark. Huge , but harmless and in warmer weather they're in abundance off the western seaboard of the U.K.
common sense at last.look at the fins.great white.NO WAY.
basking sharks are not always harmless keep away from them
Family Clarke they are harmless
@@RealistGunner of course an arsenal fan will be the dumb one.
@@RealistGunner No, the dorsal fin is obviously note of a great white.
Every ammeter fish expert listen up. It a fucking basking shark. End of.
what a midget one
what be a ammeter? End of what? Your arrogant knob?
Not a basking shark - look at the right of the wake of the jetski at 1.35 seconds - zoom into that and tell me its a basking shark :)
craig cotter an ammeter measures electric current flowing through an electric circuit 😁
lloydy2644 ohmmeter?
That is a baking shark 100 percent . I've caught over 50 sharks in Pembrokeshire and see lots of baskings around . Great white lol .
rob neill I wish I had a baking shark it could make me a cake
its a welsh baking shark, may make us a nice welsh rare bit or a lovely bara brith mmmmmm
You sir are a scumbag! Leave the effin sharks alone!
No it’s a baked shark. Absolutely high out of its mind, and looking for snacks.
I work on the fish counter in Asda and 3rd that. It is a megladon
To me and my knowledge of sharks it's a Basking Shark.
If you look at it's behaviour it's not really interested in you, it swims away but not in any hurry. I put this down to being because they're filter feeders and have no real reason to bump/mouth larger objects (such as a jetski) because they won't eat it.
Most of the footage and info I've seen about Great Whites suggest they are inquisitive and like to know what large objects in their vicinity are, which they test through bumping, sight and mouthing. This would be especially true for a GW in unknown waters such as those off Pembrokeshire.
Either way probably one of those moments you'll never forget. Great video pal! (Ps your reaction is priceless)
Joe Walton Never saw this comment till just now, cheers tho 👍🏻😁
Might they and other sharks leave because they were disturbed?
it's a basking shark feeding on plankton I reckon :) don't panic 8-)
+GeordieTerrier defo not a blue or mako, it's too shallow (+ close to the shore). Most likely a small basking shark
I was born 6ft I'm guessing basking sharks are not born 30ft..
Wrong shaped dorsal fin mate
Apologies, on closer inspection that is most probably a Basking shark
Yeh if it was a great white or something its tail would not have been out of the water you would have just seen a dorsal fin not a tail
They were not basking sharks, one of them showed some sharp aggressive turns in the water like it was hunting, basking sharks dont move like that. "Im fucking off!" Hahahaha great vid
There was only one shark in the video, what you can see is the front dorsal fin and the tail. I somewhat agree with you when you say about the sharp aggressive turn that it made. Cheers for comment!
Yes they do move like that, they can turn direction at a speed you'd never think. They an move in exactly the way you described.
'Where's that gone, i'm fuckin off' lost my shit at this part hahahahaha
1:36sec when you looked back for the second time - it looks like it was just to the right of the path left by the jet-ski ??? anyone else see that?? initially I thought it was your lure but then realised you had reeled that in...
I saw it to I would die if I was on that jetski
Saw it too, looked like it might be a seal head, which would explain the white/porbeagle - I'm tempted to say it was a porbeagle but a bloody big one, we've had a few down here in Dorset. That isnt a basking shark though, no way, too much of a rigid tail and dorsal when on the surface
@@Lochnivar pause it at 01:16 it's clearly a basking shark dorsal fin absolutely no chance that's a porbeagle and if you think that's a great white them there's no hope for ye
I'm a marine narco biologist and I've been living in my submarine since 1985 and I've dealt drugs to all kinds of sharks... Even Pablo Escobars sharks!
And I'm telling you it was a real great white!
Wow I'm sure you are proud of that complete stupid lie idiot
@@JotaroKujo-sx9hi
lol you took it literal!?!?! 😂
@@CinephileSanityTV well the amount of stupid people I've seen not educated on animals is outstanding so yeah I did but I'm glad that your not actually serious
"im fuckin off" lol I would be too xDD
after reading all your insightful comments I'd just like to say I'm no expert guys but that's a bloody big fish...
I wouldnt be so sure we don't have Great Whites in UK waters. There have been a number of significant sightings over the last few years, some very close to shore. While these sightings couldve been misidentified and are Porbeagles. As the Porbeagle and the Great White share alot of the same characteristics for survival and are closely related in specie, it is not to hard to believe that there are Great Whites in our waters. As the saying goes " There is no history of anything, until its happened"
It would be weird if they avoided Britain, being that they exist everywhere else, including France, which is only 25 miles away.
They’re in Irish waters I think too
You could have stopped the jetski and jumped in the water to verify what kind of shark it was, If it ate you whole, it was probably a megladon, if it took both your legs and half of your torso, It was probably a white shark, If it swam up to you grinning and kissed you, It was probably a basking shark, if it grabbed all your money and sucked all your blood from your body, then spat you out, It was a Meghan Markle shark.🤣
You can tell he's a city boy running away from a basking shark haha.
Mate, after much consideration I, a legitimate Marine Biologist, have decided that the shark you encountered was, without any hesitation, a Megalodon. Which means, you are very, very lucky to be alive. Hope this clarification has cleared everyone's doubts!
Peace out
glencairn99 that's not a megladon
Erin Tanswell Hahaha, you're not very bright are you?
Erin Tanswell
Yes it is! I im a marine biologist and i am 100% sure it is one!
glencairn99 😂 Love it 👍
Working on the fish counter in tecos doesnt make you a marine biologist
A few of the lads round at lydstep told me same thing but I would have expected a basking shark to have been much bigger, who know? lol I'll be back in july for another look though.
Good catch m8
Wtf lol that's it no more swimming at broad haven or Newgale lol
Im a certified marine biologist and I've studied marine biology for over 25 years. I'm telling you what you encountered was a goldfish.
Randomers 2K16 Nah mate it was totally the wrong colour! Koi carp maybe....
Its a Baking shark.
You can tell from its cakes and bread.
Looking at the dorsal and tail fin showing, it’s a Basking shark a beautiful creature. 👍
Main identifying feature, I agree. Both of those fins visible.
well firstly a basking shark would certainly be a lot bigger and yes im well aware that it could be juvenile but ive never seen one and secondly basking sharks dont move like that at all, that was a great white no doubt at all and why are people surprised that theyre here? theyve been here a lot longer than we know water temp is fine and there is plenty of its favoured food ie seal and also very little if any orca activity which means no predators to worry about, makes total sense if you ask me
tut - its a basking ffs look at it
If there were GW here you'd expect some attacks on ppl
Basking shark seen loads of them at sea some well over 20ft and they can turn / move quick especially when there is a motor coming too close ....
@complete property services you would av had to see them at sea thats where they pigging live dont see many in meadows or woods
All I could see were the tips of the dorsal fin and tail, but their shape didn't look like those of a basking shark. Also, aren't basking sharks a hell of a lot bigger than that? I'm not saying this was or wasn't a white shark.
The mountains in the background looks very interesting and beautiful, i know this have nothing to do with the basking shark but for me more interesting than this shark ;)
ps. sorry for my English
Definitely a great white and the reason I can say this without fear of contradiction is I actually caught one the very same on lake Windermere whilst on a school trip
Windermere also has killer deep sea racing mullet chop
Completed it.
It was definitely a great white shark. I would advise all jetskiers in the UK to stay out of the water. Apparently, seachavs are their favourite food.
Great whites don’t swim in lakes
Defo not a great white....it’s clearly a basking shark...clear to see from the tail movement and fins width
Why do you use a rod when fishing out at sea?? as you can just use a line as casting is not required like casting off a beach. Also rods in a boat especially a little jet ski would be clumsy and difficult to use especially when retrieving fish from the lure.
Michael Macluskie my ski is huge it’s more like a small boat, and I have it setup to carry everything handsfree, don’t think you can see it in this video but there’s others where you can.
This guy has the intelligence of a rock
Most likely Basking Shark in this case, dorsal fin does seem triangular in shape, although on the small side. Reality is it could be any number of shark species, very difficult to from grainy vids of the fins alone.
Personally I'm convinced Great whites are here in summer months at least and believe the reason they've never been confirmed is due to the assumption every large shark sighted is a basking shark, even when those people were not there to confirm this and sightings occurred in areas known for seals and other marine life that great whites predate on.
I'm confident great whites will be confirmed in UK waters at some point in the near future and I'm tempted to go out and probe it myself. I'm more afraid of diving in Pembrokeshire than I ever was in the med where whites have already been and confirmed.
I have seen greater diversity of marine life in UK and have encountered other shark species within metres of the shoreline whereas I have always found the med to be largely baron of marine life due to over fishing & never had a single sighting of any type of shark in either hundreds of dives or while working as a boat tour guide out there.
The water temps are also very comparable and sometimes even warmer in UK during summer months than those in the med, which is a lot chillier by the way than people think.
We know the Med has White Sharks but we believe the UK does not? Honestly I think that is a cope from people who don't want to admit that they are here too, just elusive, probably because brits are hermits and we simply don't spend as much time in and around the water as other cultures do.
That’s not a basking shark fin basking shark fins are round. Most likely a porbeagle.
It's the basking shark n they never bite humans. You could of jump in and I guarantee it would swim away, they cruise on surface alot. I've been surfing all over the Welsh and Cornish coast and seen lots of sharks including swimming with a basking shark. And yes Uk waters do have great white. Not many. But they have been spotted by a few fisherman. RUclips it. Argue all you want but it's a fact
Without any doubt, a Basking Shark. Mouth wide open with it’s dorsal fin and tail occasionally breaking out of the water. It’s tail and rear body moving from side to side as it swims slowly forward filtering plankton from the water with it’s gills.
See no one would believe me ,but here we have a genuine Wild Nessie, that has been kept in secret by the Scottish to restock Loch Ness until it escaped . And to prove it we also have a picture that was taken after a day out, by the workers of a certain whisky distillery of their annual product tasting event............🦈........( it is a little larger bit bigger than this but little Lofty Stewart was slightly inebriated ,and had the camera the wrong way around at the time)
gd footage m8,wtf is wrong wiv sme ppl,its a shark, these live in the oceans, wtf is wiv the lame comments, like that's it I'm never going in the he sea again, erm, wtf and really lol grow up,if its a young great white, nice, leave it alone,if its a native shark,ie,basking(which I also believe it is in this vid),porbeagle, blue or mako, leave it alone, but yh once again gd vid m8
I don't think there's any need for mass panic unless you're a shoal of plankton. Next week watch how we fear for our lives as we encounter a marauding grass snake sunning itself.
I live in Pembrokeshire worked on fishing boats (been up and down this bit of water many of times)and yes its cold here south wales and there are many sharks here that is a Baskin shark ,I think one the biggest blue shark was caught around here ,so no its not a great white ha ffs
Listen that’s a great white no doubt y’all don’t know shit I worked in McDonald’s on the fish fillea machine and after doing some carefull calculations that’s defo a great white
We spotted a big shark off Bridlington beach two weeks ago well are lass did and then me it was big and this was no basking shark which scared mi a bit cause we was about to go in for a paddle wi kids and it was only in waste high water and it was no great white but it was about 8-9 ft long with what we could see and wi have only ever seen one more shark other then this that close to beach
that by the looks of things is a basking shark... u can tell by the dorsal fin...its rounded at the top..but great whites do come to our shores........im pretty sure !!
Scared of a basking shark, don't apply for a job as a marine photographer.
You my friend have big balls, fair play to you thankfully you wasn't hurt.
Notches in the tail and sharp aggressive turns ..... Prob is a great white by the looks of it . A young one .
Not a baskin
shark in any way.... Not sure but not white either... Back fin long and pointy more a mako or a blue
Basking Shark. Common, toothless, harmless. So the Yorkshireman buggers off...
I'm fuckin off !! Haha
Basking shark will miss you to death.
chris henderson it was a great white
Gets back to car.....Shark is sitting in driving seat waiting for you....
have you seen the golf course in australia that has sharks in the water hazard bull sharks the golfers love them
It’s called a HUGE basking shark no teeth 🦷 and a plankton eater
Do not panick in future its only a basking shark! I swim out to them all summer.
@1:35 just as he looks back towards the wake the Seadoo leaves you can see the Fin above water just for one second and it was right beside him before he took off. Sharks are curious by nature, the shark wasn't trying to attack you it was just interested in the commotion on the top of the water thinking it could be food ;but sharks aren't man eaters and Seadoos are not in their diet either. Too bad you didn't have anything to chum the water with you probably could have got the shark to breach and put on a show for you. I'd be back there chumming the water from a boat trying to make friends with the shark.
That’s not the fin mate, that’s waves being formed from his jet ski I slowed it down and you can see it’s just a small wave
Yup it’s a basking shark...I used to work at inshore trawling during early 70’s we d see them quite often in and around sea area “white” off the uk south coast", I recognised it right away!
I would be quite scared on that jet ski I haven't ever been on a jet ski in the ocean but I have on the lake quite a lot actually my parents has had a couple of them the last one they had was a decent size three seater ski doo that was pretty new and pretty fast and was a blast to ride and go out with your girlfriend on for the day but when your alone and you ride out into a big open water like I'm the middle of the lake where you can't really see land that good in any direction it's a really terrifying feeling and it's eerie because it's so wide open and so big and your on something so small I can't imagine swimming or falling off in a big open water like that but it would have been a million times scarier if it was the ocean and I seen a shark that size while on the jet ski no thank you and until you have been on a jet ski out on a big open body of water I don't wanna hear I'm a pussy or anything like that because the shit is scary and if you can ride without any feeling of eeriness or anything than more power to you but it freaks me out
That was not a basking shark, that shark turned on him, a basking shark won't do that, that's a gws or a mako shark.
Oh look a shark......in the ocean.........swimming along minding its business......well would you believe it..
Its a basking shark you muppet.
Thanks bitch 👍🏻
it could of been a basking shark , but i think that might of been a Porbeagle shark.
it's possible what he saw was a basking shark and they are completely harmless.
That's goldy...I flushed him down the toilet in 1990
Im f#cking off!! LOL
1:37 is that the shark following u when u look back?
Great vid thanks for sharing ar kid... looks like a big Thresher with that elongated tail visible as he legged it before you ran him over with your sea 'hog'. Plenty of sharks and other unusual marine life to be seen around the Pembs coast as they take a short cut up through the Irish sea to the North. You were lucky to catch that on camera... top vid... well done!
+Artiz.... Doh!.. have to retract that comment... deffo Basking Shark... barb in the tail... someone spotted that earlier too!
whites all have a tail similar to a basking shark.
there is absolutely nobody on earth who can "guarantee" the species of that shark just by seeing that video of its fins.
Yeh lol @ "bigger ski" I'm no shark expert but it didnt look like a basker to me, any ideas?
Judging by the size I'd say a mako or blue shark. They show up in British waters
It was a big one, possible Megalodon, but a Great White at least!
hahahaha awesome im fucking off....good to see a shark in uk waters
Has anyone ever caught a Great White in UK waters? That would be where I'd start in making an argument for or against.
I don’t think so but you’re bound to get someone else saying the opposite. What’s funny is I don’t think I even mentioned anything about great white shark in the video or title/description but the whole comment section is full of it 😂
lots of baskers in welsh waters, especially that area
it was small really you could have got closer 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓
"Ho-ly shit, where's that gone!? I'm fuckin' off" 🤣 My thoughts exactly!!
i believe a basing shark also.
