Do you think a marine biologist would wrongly identify a basking shark? Even I can identify a basking shark and I’m not a marine biologist. The fact is white sharks will go where there is food and some parts of the U.K. have a very healthy seal population so why wouldn’t there be white sharks here? I’ve heard all kinds of stories about sea temperatures but they are seen in a lot of oceans with varying temperatures so it’s not impossible. I know one thing for certain. If I was a marine biologist then I would argue. As I’m not I take his word. 👍

I dived for weeks around the Summer Isles as a shellfish diver in 2004, including Black Rock. Often near large seal colonies. I always hated floating around waiting to get picked up after a dive.
Swimming amidst seal colonies is likely ill-advised.

There is proof that they are in uk waters shark tracker tracked one to scotland a couple of years ago. They can occasionally even be found in Alaskan waters if conditions are right.

Back then in 2002 they didn't have that many digital cameras around with unlimited storage. They were probably taking portrait quality pics using film, and id bet they didn't have any film left after a 45min dive, either that or by the time they realised what it was, they couldn't take their eyes off it to pick up the camera. They said it was only there for 15sec beside the boat, he got a good look instead. Some people prefer to see things in reality, and not through a camera lens
Christian Buczko I had a digital SLR in 2002 and was a poor student at the time, so there's no way these marine biologists didn't have one, or at least a compact digital camera.
Why is he comparing it to a basking shark. Its like saying "No it wasn't a 747, possibly a Cessna". Basking shark, much darker, bigger, surface feeders, massive mouth, slower and totally different dorsal. If your a Marine Biologist, convince us it wasn't a Mako or Porbeagle.

I live in Canada and although it's not well known there are also some rather large Great Whites in the waters around Newfoundland..
The water is cold, as cold as the waters around the UK I would reckon..so it's not a stretch to believe they would frequent the water around the UK as well...
Yeah the are alot of them outside New Foundland and New Brunswick. I live in Sweden and I suppose we also have the same temperature as Canada. This year a woman got killed in Maine. Also the same temperature

There are plenty of sightings along the French west coast and this could well be one.They prefer temperate waters not hot and not cold so it is likely that small numbers do reach British waters but unlikely to go much further north.

There's no reason why a great white wouldn't follow the gulf stream into UK waters - there's plenty of food in our waters - seals, porpoise and large fish

Yep, that is definitely a Great White. Been in a cage diving with them, I've studied them, dived with them stroked one as it swam passed the cage. They are absolutely awesome incredible creatures. Can't wait to dive with them again!

Considering he's (apparently) a marine biologist, he chooses his words very carefully when he says, "I was convinced in my own mind that this was a great white shark." The man has not confirmed anything. He's simply telling us what went through his mind, at that exact moment in time.
Also, the video of him and his mates diving is obviously not real footage of the actual event. You claim that you've been cage diving with great white sharks. Therefore, would you not agree that genuine & verified footage, of a great white shark, swimming off the coast of Scotland would = WORLD NEWS?

Porbeagle - Relative of the Great white - looks the very same. Very common in UK waters - Seen loads.

Minus Won yeah they get up to around 9ft and 300lb! Also I think Some of the footage was not from that specific adventure. I may be wrong :) But it's the more likely reason. I don't doubt great whites habe frequented UK waters but I've seen many porbeagles and they look the same. I've seen great whites in Australia!

Porbeagles have bigger eyes than that. Also, its lighter markings underneath didn't start as high up as Porbeagles' typically do
@Colin Shilto folks tend to also be terrible about mistaking sizes. 5 meters is large end for White Sharks. And shark mis-identification even by divers and such s common. Could it be a white? Sure. Could have been a lot smaller too and a different species than claimed to. Everything gets bigger in fish stories. Such trained and experienced divers and scientists should also have been able to take a bloody photo and such, too. So I guess we'll never know, will we?
Sometimes a shark might think a diver is a seal when flapping about on the surface.

Could have been a large mako shark, they're common for UK waters and basically lean/small great whites

In summer, great white sharks are reguarly present in the waters around newfoundland and nova scotia. They feed on seals. They will also be on the other side of the Atlantic feeding on seals in Scotland, Ireland and England.
It was probably a Porbeagle shark, it’s a cousin of the great white, they’ve been caught in trawler nets up to 12 feet. They feed off other fish and are attracted to the sound of boat engines as they seemed to have learned that they can get a free meal from boats, especially trawlers... so they will naturally have a sniff about if they’re in the vicinity...
But this shark was a lot bigger then 12 feet

I love watching and reading about any type of shark i am a great believer of great whites being in brittish and scottish waters i live in edinburgh a good 30 odd yesrs ago there was a 9foot portbeagle shark stranded on granton beach so yes i believe in great whites being in our waters they adapt to any type of water thank u for reading

There are lots of sharks related to the great white with the same counter shading. And live in northern waters. There has been a Great White seen around Shetland. Summer isles of the west coast of Scotland is a breeding area for Seals. It is possible that young pups in the water will be getting preyed upon. They were definitely needing a bigger boat.
I live in NZ down in the Southern Pacific , we have what we call resident great whites breeding in most harbours around the country , other species also are born in the same harbours . In the Southern Hemisphere , white sharks are found as far south as Antarctica , all the way up to the tropics . They do frequent city areas , but prefer a nice quiet surrounding , also another shark , the Bullshark , is very similar to the white , but only tend to grow to about 3 -- 4 meters maximum , they are much more aggressive than a white and will attack humans at will . The experts think a lot of deaths or survivals could be attributed to these bullsharks . If there are more sightings in the future up in your country , then that might be a good thing , it could mean that fish ( food ) are making a comeback in your seas ! Just don`t let the Chinese fisheries in , they`ll clean your area out in no time , serious , cheers .

I was a student at Reading University in the 1980s. One of my friends was studying Zoology and was a keen diver in his spare time. He was convinced that he saw a Tiger shark near a wreck off the south west coast of Britain.
He didn't. The chances of seeing a tiger shark in British waters is next to 0.
@@sineadoconormcG I don't have a photograph of the shark my friend saw so we can only discuss the matter on the balance of probability. He had dual British and South African nationality and was also experienced at diving and swimming off the African coast. I used to take a keen interest in the obituary section of the Uni Mag to find out how he was getting on!

This isn't unheard of, theoretically they can be found anywhere, they don't typically live in UK oceans but they are known to inhabit the waters on ocassions

@gustaf3811 I didn't say it was impossible, actually uk waters are a decent temperature and have a large seal colony, it's more strange why they are not here. But that doesn't change the fact that there hasn't been a single "confirmed sighting" ever there's been a few believable stories but that's it
A marine biologist second guessing a Great White.......RIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
Many years ago I was a full time fisherman fishing the far west of Cornwall ,and I think a the shark you've seen is a Mako. A very rare visitor that few people in the UK have ever seen, because it can be years without one being caught and was not even identified as a British fish until the 1950s
I totally agree a 5m Great White. It is possible in our waters in The British Isles but more likely a Mako as they are here quite often

They have been sighted in the Bay of Fundy, Gulf of St Lawrence and off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia's coast in Atlantic Canada in recent years. A lot of sources say that the grey seal population is high and is attracting them, especially the Sable Island area.
Some of the really big ones go there every year, check out the shark tracker app. They gps tag them which shows they migrate up and down the coast from the bay of fundy to the Gulf of Mexico
Could've been a Shortfin Mako, which have been recorded swimming in British waters throughout the Autumn months and are closely related to Great White sharks.
The size, the behaviour and that two tone colouration of gunmetal grey on top and white underneath is rather telling. It couldn’t be anything else.

You can tell that the sighting was so quick and unsupported that they have just convinced each other it was a GW.
Every 6 to 12 months this pops up my recommended ......and every time I watch it...😁
Could have been a gw as our waters are perfect temperature and lots of seals to eat the question is why are we not seeing more gw in the Uk. The only other shark it could have been was an abnormally large porbeagle they can grow up to 12 feet and are basically the same as a great white shark and are regularly found all over the uk the only thing is they don’t normally grow to 5 metres however like humans I suppose they all come in different sizes 🥰❤️

Well they've cut in visuals of a GW, but what they saw is almost certainly a big porbeagle. It's the right time of year for them to be up that way, they were close inshore. I'm a bit disappointed in the "professional marine biologist" in the clip who couldn't think of "anything else" it could be, yet didn't describe any feature that might distinguish it from a porgie (apart from perhaps his length estimate which I can't completely buy into without photos). Not knowing that L. nasus is native to the British Isles is a bit inexcusable for someone in his field.

There was no porbeagle, mako, salmon or any other similar species in this video. That was a Great White, the broadly pointed snout, the dorsal fin is easily recognisable, the dark colours shining vividly in the sunlight, makos are brighter, salmons have a more rounded dorsal and are stockier and shorter proportionatly as well as the colouration being off, porbeagles don't even reach near that size and the look doesn't match at all. Looks pretty reminiscent to a Great White to me
yeah that footage clip was 100% a great white but that film it showed wasnt what they saw it was just played to show how it could have been a white shark,like others have said marine biologist would know a great white and they were there to take photos most people would have grabbed a camera as soon as they knew it wasnt a basking shark

14 year ago , and it’s only this year that we’ve heard about sharks in Cornwall , but only there , no waters are safe
What does it take for a sighting to be confirmed ‘official’. A photograph? Even then, people could claim that it wasn’t taken in U.K. waters.
I guess someone would have to be attacked in U.K. waters for it to be confirmed that Great Whites visit U.K. waters. The water temperature would definitely be adequate for them in the summer months.

I’m sat on the toilet pissed and this has made its way into my recommendations
Bit late (very late, but it's just popped up in my feed) to the party but oh well. Back in the year 2000 me and my buddy, me being someone who had grown up by the water, a surfer and fisherman, and him the same but also a fully qualified diver with 6 years experience by that point, encountered what we believe to this day was an enormous, 16ft-ish great white off the north cornwall coast. It was aggressive, and it scared the shit out of us.
Nobody believed us. But usually when we'd come close to shore, like a 100 metres out or so, i'd dive overboard and swim the rest of the way. On that day i did not step off that little 12ft boat until it was grounded on the sand. And no, it wasn't a basking shark, we saw hundreds of them every year.
It circled us, nudged and bashed the boat, disappeared for a minute then came back and did the same thing 3 times. The way it moved, the speed, the sudden bursts of acceleration were unlike anything we had encountered before. As was the shape and colouration. And the shape of the fins (which we both researched after the fact) were also unlike anything we had seen before. Turns out those fins were a perfect match for a Great White. At the time we were both thinking it but didn't want to say it, as we did not want to freak the other out. And because this thing was being so aggressive, and was much bigger than the boat we were in.

I saw one near Padstow in Cornwall. About 20 people watch it swim around in a bay one morning before heading out to sea.
In Massachusetts we call that a tuesday.
Porbeagle sharks are similar in looks to a white shark and I believe also in the same shark family. I think that's what that was, although great whites do very rarely come a short way up the channel. They prefer clear water however so don't go far up the channel.
They are tiny compared to a 5 meter white shark. A 5 meter gws weight over 10x more than a full grown beagle.

White shark is also known as a traveler shark, which means they can travel to distant places in the world. This of course has the consequence that there could be white sharks in Britain as well.

It is a Porbeagle shark, same family as Great White but harmless, it's common name is a mackerel shark, quite common on West coast, I fish in the Minch and have seen them several times.

If a dolphin did they same you wouldn't call it aggressive now would you. This guys a marine biologist? Where did he study? Jaws the movie university?

You do realise it was a re-creation? It wasn't actual footage of the event. And this was 7 years ago so the filming is obviously going to be bad

Another internet expert...The only shark species in the UK which is known to glide on the surface is a basking shark. Anyone that knows anything about them know that they are passive and don't tend to change direction much, especially not aggressively. Porbeagle and blue sharks don't really go on the surface, they tend to stay in the mid-low water columns. Of course a shark could turn in a way that looks aggressive to investigate the boat.
I was fishing off the dock and decided to use my wife's holiday roast for bait. Suddenly a tug, a bite, a massive pull. It came up to the surface. No word of a lie, it was a massive Great White Shark no less than 25 feet, 3 tons of em.
You need to write a novel about your encounter or better yet make a movie (tho don't bother with sequels, especially 3D ones)

Makos and Great Whites look very much alike, but a Mako has much bigger eyes than a GW and Makos have a more roundish fin with a bit white in it. (The fin of GWs is usually dark) So I'd say this looks like a Great White
GWS are very easy to distinguish from other sharks.
I had an unnerving encounter at the Sand Castle in Blackpool, I narrowly avoided a floater. It was yellow and a good foot long, so I can only assume it was in an adult.
Great whites are live in warm and cold water.they live also in Russian Bearing sea,Massachussets Cape Cod island,new york,north carolina.great whites are also live in Italy,croatia,southafrica,Mexico,Hawaii,california,Florida,Argentinia,spain and there islands,british islands,Caribic,Australia,new sealand,japan.
Thats cold oceans and warm Oceans.great white live in 80% of sea in the whole world.
Probably and more likely to be a porbeagle shark. These arent uncommon around the british isles. The do look very much like great whites as they are closely related. The porbeagle can grow anywhere from 8ft to a possible 12ft so seeing one could easily be mistaken for a great white, as the bloke in the vid says "hes a marine biologist" so i would of thought he would of known all this.

@@DEVINE.IMAGE. they are not known for attacking humans, but i think its safe to say that all sharks are dangerous apart from the whale shark and basking shark

@@DEVINE.IMAGE. no not really, there is only the porbeagle and the blue shark that may pose any threat, you would have to be quite some distance off shore to encounter a blue shark. The usual jelly fish and the weaver fish are the only others to look out for. They won't kill you but they have a nasty sting
