He's been looking for a gypsy wife and giving fake gold to the daughter of a momma who personally adores him would shame him from the already small gypsy community. Jewel didn't know Josiah until this show. Alot of the guys in this show was hired as extras. Jewel knew who Nick was. Thats why Nick knew what she actually liked.

Y’all Josiah ended up getting really creepy in the next episode where Nick and Jewel actually got married and Nick treated Jewel really well and with a lot of care. She seemed really happy with him and he seemed to genuinely care about her as a person and not a possession- unlike most dudes on this show (including sadly later Josiah). I liked Josiah in the first episode but he got really pissy and immature when Jewel didn’t choose him

The pressure they put on their kids is ridiculous when it comes to marriage. I get it you have culture and traditions. Doesn't mean they'll disappear if you marry a gorgur.
