How to Capture Sharp Handheld Landscape Photos without a Tripod using the Nikon Z7

Lachie and I continued to explore Karijini National Park in the Pilbara. We walked down Kalamina Gorge and discovered some beautiful scenes, with tiny waterfalls and the gorge's velvet rocks as a backdrop.
To keep things light, I decided not to take my Tripod and instead rely on the IBIS of the Nikon Z7.
I take an approach to help support IBIS and ensure I have the best chance to capture an image that's not blurred from the camera shaking as I take the shot.
To minimize camera shake, I'd typically want to increase the shutter speed, and I did for shots where I didn't want to capture anything moving. However, there were scenes with running water, for those I played around with a shutter speed of 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5 of a second.
I also kept the camera close to my body with my elbows tight to my torso. I breathe out, and at the end of my breath, I'd take the shot.
Using this technique, I captured sharp, clean images showing the textures of the rocks and still have the movement of the water in the photos.

Much appreciated Andrew, we got there reasonably early but weren't the first. A few hours before lunch it got really busy, so there was a bit of vlogging awkwardly in front of others but I was determined to get the job done. 😀
Good to see you Andrew. That beginning B-roll - wonderful. Magnificent desolation. I use the IBIS on the Z7 quite frequently, especially for waterfalls. However, I end up using a tripod if the wind picks up. I agree on the NiteCore torch/gear. I own one of their torches and it has exceeded my needs A bit larger than the one in the video but I'm sure just as good. Always glad to see you out and about - stay safe.
Thanks Miguel, yeah I'll still be using a tripod for stills, but it great to know what I can do with the IBIS if I need it. I was pushing it to it's limits, so missed a few shots. I glad you've had a similar experience, it's can't be the battery because it just not that heavy, so there must be some magic in the LED light they use. Either way I'm so happy I have one that I can rely on!

Thanks Andrew. I've been pleasantly surprised at how low I can go with the shutter hand held on my Z6 II. I got a couple of good captures at Bells Rapids while the Swan River was up.

Thanks Richard, it was a sensational trip, I hope to do a similar trip next year, this time with my wife. I enjoyed the handheld shooting, certainly felt a lot more freedom. Yeah, Lachie does have plenty of his old man's features...poor bugger! 😀

Great video Andrew, loved the opening sequence with the drone and the aerial images and the b-roll when you were driving your rig was fantastic too. IBIS worked well based on the images you shared which were very nice. Probably IBIS will be a main feature for me to consider when I decide to change my camera next time as I done a lot of hand held images when in London and reckon it would be beneficial to have for those times when you cant use a tripod

Yeah, I was pleased with the way the IBIS held up, I was really pushing it trying to finds it limits. I was going to share a little more about that but then video was start to get long already, perhaps I'll cover that in other video. I didn't really think much about having IBIS for stills, I thought it was more helpful for video, but it definitely handy to have, and now I know what it's capable of doing. I'll be relying on it more for some shots in the future.

Thanks Andrew, yeah we definitely have a different climate to that of the UK. In the Pilbara the temperatures during the day in summer are in the 40's so moss and ferns just wouldn't survive. A different story down south though. 👍

Been doing hand held long before i even could afford a decent tripod .
Anyways I guess you must think there is some , holding a camera and takin a pic is a krypton factor challenge to them .
When you can easily use a fence post , a boulder . improvise adapt overcome ..
Title should include "In-body image stabilization (IBIS)" -- and over 4min into video before any information is a looooong time for a tut. (Interesting video otherwise, but not what the title led me to believe I'd see)
Any special reasons to not use a tripod?
Nice work as usual. Be careful using the Z7s OIS between 1/30s and 1/160s it's absolute rubbish. A known fault with this camera. Not known by me before I bought one and not advertised by Nikon for obvious reasons.
