I photographed Honeycombs over two days last year under different conditions. It was a location I wanted to return to as there are miles of varied coastline to explore.
I headed south over the rocks to see how the coastline had changed since last year. I noticed the beach had built up and was steeper but cutaway in parts.
The sky had a variety of clouds at different levels, but I could see a break near the horizon where I hoped the light from the setting sun was going to shine through and reflect off the clouds.
However, the lower clouds built up, and the sunset was blocked, resulting in a grey sky and an average shot.
Despite the disappointment of the sunset, every photograph trip is an opportunity to practice composition, read how the light changes under different conditions, and become familiar with the location.
Most of all, it's another chance to experience the outdoors

I find sunrise and sunset photography very stressful but very rewarding. The frantic search for compositions, the uncertainty about the quality of the light and sky colour, the disappointment of unmet expectations...and every now and then, the reward when everything comes together.
You managed to capture some lovely shots despite not getting the sky colours you were hoping for.❤️📷

Another great video, thanks Andrew. You have beautiful beaches there. I find seascape photography very inspirational, as you can visit the same location many times,, and it is never the same. Some people envisage a sensational sunset as the epitome of a great seascape, but you have shown in this video that this isn't necessary for an amazing image. The more muted tones in your images define the power of the sea and the windswept character of the beach.

The wall of rocks looked quite appealing when the light was hitting it, however, you captured your scene well.

I really enjoyed that video, Andrew. I especially liked the last photo but preferred the cool tones on the raw image. I have missed good light by minutes hundreds of times and I wish I was as understanding as you about it. However, not a failed trip by far.

Beautiful coastline Andrew, diverse indeed. If we had a dime for every promising sunset that turned into a dud, we'd be rich! Yes, always about the adventure and feeling of well being as we practice our craft. Keep exploring. Thanks again.

The photo @ 1:06 is beautiful. The green on the rocks ads a wonderful texture as well as complimenting the orange of the sky. There are many compositional elements that create organization of the jumbled stones as well, sort of an organized chaos.

Far from a failed trip - the drone footage and final image made it all ok for me.

Amazing coastal scenery Andrew the red granite of the Southwest is a big draw card for seascapes. The light on the rocks at times was incredible but I know you wanted to get some water into your shots. I could also see how uplifting it was for you which was great to see.

Definitely not the only one to miss out on the sunset colours Andrew.
Great location for photography though, and you did get some good images.
Not to mention the exercise, and of course the experience.

Hahah - love that little bit of self talk at the end hey. Sounds like me after I've gone up kunanyi/Mt Wellington . . . . . You've pulled some okay images out of some very ordinary moments. Lots to explore there for sure.

There is no such thing as a failed trip. As long as you went out and put effort in- and learned from the the elements that made the trip less than successful- then it was a good trip.
Photography is about the process, no the final product. When I’m not getting photos I’m happy with I start to do unconventional things and experiment. Sometimes it allows me to walk away with something that was inspired.

I always get anxiety watching RUclipsrs talk to the camera while the sun is going down. In my head I'm like, stop talking to me and get the bloody shot!! As they say in combat sports, you win or you learn.

Nice compositions, too bad about clouds, they don't always cooperate...I always thought a polarizer is intended to be used at close to 90 degree to sun, not direct on or away? That is beautiful coast location.

I’ve said it a zillion times: the images never really matter - not when you’re shooting for you. Landscape photography definitely puts a skip in my step, and I enjoy watching it do the same for you. Wonderful video, Andrew, and that last shot is a bottler. I reckon it would work with cool tones, too. 👍😄🦘

What a wonderful location for photography Andrew. Gee it really looked like that sky was going to explode an any minute .. I guess you just have to put yourself in the right spots and wait . .!!! Well done mate.

The final image was still a very nice image Andrew but I couldn't agree more with your comments at the end. Even if the final image is what you hoped for, there is always newly acquired knowledge to take away from the location and that will be invaluable for a return visit

Mate, you walked past the best shot, which was the pool of water with the waves breaking over, plenty of possibilities there, but you dismissed it! Too busy hunting for that perfect, elusive "composition", only to get a capture that in no way extended your artistic boundaries. If you want to get different results, rather than the same old shots, you have to try different things. Just my 2 cents worth.
