- Decathlon Stylus is, in my opinion, the BEST cheap electric mountain bike available right now. Its a bike that works great out the box. But I like to tinker around and see how things can be improved.
In this video, sponsored by Hope Technology, I treat the bike to some serious upgrades.

Hey all, the Decathlon Stilus is a brilliant base bike and with a few changes can be totally transformed. Biggest difference is Mullet setup, it slackens the head angle a bit and the Front Fork and more aggressive tyre change makes a huge difference. This is now pretty much a dream build, with all the Hope parts. Total build cost around £5k, including bike, fork etc. Thats now a LOT of cash and obviously no need to spend all that... BUT still cheaper than many, many entry level to mid level ebikes from other brands. I'll do another ride video soon to share how it all works! Cheers, Rob.
Did pretty much the same thing with a 2017/18 Focus Jam², minus the brakes and bars for the moment, but totally agree on the improvements the mullet setup made.
The bike had 650b 2.8" XC tyres front and rear and it made the steering totally vague, though the grip and traction from the rear was pretty good. After test fitting an old 29er front to see if it worked went with a 29" Fortus 30 front and 27.5" Fortus 35 rear still on a 2.8 but more aggressive tyre, and its spot on 👍. The 27.5" rear gives you a bit more arse clearance too. I sometimes still buzz my butt on a 29 rear which can be horrible on a drop off 😅
Good tip on the bash guard as the 29er will raise the motor slightly and the chainring will probably take any hits anyway.
Its not often you see crank arms off on ebike vids. You got a bit of a view here but it would have been good to see the interface to the motor in a bit more detail as I'm not familiar with it.
Its now sweeeeet
At first I thought that almost spend more than half the price on new pieces wasn't interesting but indeed it still less than most of the competitors with lower quality spare parts... 🤔 and man those Hope stuff is impressive (but I'm not fan of the red anodization because I have no taste 😁)
Thanks for this video and the original review of the Decathlon bike. I really appreciate both of these reviews. I love the modifications. Quick question this is now a £5 bike I would love to see a comparison with the Treck Rail 7 which comes in at the exact same price point but with a 625wh battery.
Would love to see it compared against other bikes that are about £5000 of the shelf.
I would not go for light gear but tough. The E in EMTB carries you up mostly and I want to keep it for as long, as possible, so no need to save some grams on ie bash guard but invest in tougher gear that can handle the stress better and longer.
And I actually like the Purion display.
Great vid. Your original Stilus video inspired me to buy the bike for my wife. This video has now got her pestering me to buy her expensive red bits to put on it. It’s costing me a small fortune but it’s a game changer for her and she loves it. Keep em coming!
Great bike and ripe for a few upgrades!
It's a shame you can't buy these bikes currently.
I was after one and ended up getting a hiabike fullseven which is a lower spec bike for more money.
Great video and colour combination 👌
Right, April 22 and all these "cheaper" emtbs are nowhere to be found or if they are available they've went up $1500+ in price, losing their appeal.
The bike is fine. It comes stock with parts that are more capable then most riders ability
In fairness he does say upgraded to "superbike" not "to a baseline minimum spec". Yeah, the bike is fine. Aside from tubeless tyres and some better pedals I don't plan on any upgrades (I'm in the process of saving for one).
Excellent love what you did.I have a Scott e730 from 2018 and I’m slowly doing the same as you I bought the bike used from my local bike shop for 3000 euros it’s my second bike first one is a Scott e710 from 2016 has over 25000 km still going strong. Thumbs up from me keep it up.
I'm surprised there's no 3rd parties repackaging the Bosch speed controller into a more compact form. Surely you could dump the LCD for a smaller LCD or LEDs.
I’d be in the queue for that!
The expression of a little boy when he gets a new toy...😎😁Congratulations Rob!👍
haha! Cant help it, that little boy still lives on in us all I think!!
And suddenly the cheapest eBike is not so cheap anymore! 😂 Jokes aside, I guess if you have a good fork laying around it would make good sense to upgrade the bike. Want to see how it performs after the upgrades! Great vid as always! 👌
Cheers! For sure it’s not a cheap build now 🤣 But I reckon it’ll perform a lot better than some much more expensive builds!!
Can't wait for the ride video,
@@RobRidesEMTB how much does this setup come in at now?
@@intrepidCreative price is under description in video £5045
I changed mine to XT but used a set of SLX four pots, makes a world of difference. What a PIA to thread the rear brake hose . I used a reverb hose joint to pull the new one through but had to disassemble the rear triangle bolts as they corners are pretty tight. Well worth it though.
Yeah that was super difficult! Got there in the end after about 30 mins!!
great idea! for the future, u can slap on all the original stock parts and sell the stylus for cheap (with little depreciation loss), and keep the bling Hope parts for a future build. pity most manufacturers don't sell emtb with frame/motor only
I've just sat and priced up the build, only I put a fox 36 ebike fork on and a cane creek rear shock, my bill would be £2985, so in total around £5600 , wow you really got me thinking Rob, I'll be buying my first ebike in January and I might go this route, I had narrowed my search to the focus jam2 6.9, but all the hope bits look sexy
One advantage of the upgrade route is you don't have to upgrade all at once. You buy an out-of-the-box superbike you need all the money up-front, or finance. The upgrade way is you can buy the bike, use it, have fun with it, then later on as your saving-up succeeds, upgrade bit by bit.
Got one ordered this morning from Decathlon 🍻🎉🎊
where did you get it from i cant find it
I think you have found the bike that will gain you the most views with the Stilus the last video has gone nuts, I ordered one the day after you released the video and was lucky enough to get one and i love it so thankyou Rob for doing the video as it saved me some money buying another brand 😊
No probs, hope you're enjoying it!
@@RobRidesEMTB loving it. Upgraded the tyres to E-wilds which has improved the bike no end. Its just a shame the bikes always out of stock now so more people cant get one to enjoy themselves
Rob you are my new best friend! Upgrades and you choose Hope...perfect 👌
Hope = nope 🤣
mark5378 spoil sport
Hi Rob,
Nicely done!
You should do some Emtb dreambuilds someday!
Cheers! Yeah maybe but Gee Milner is the master of them vids!!
It was a bargain before you just threw another 1500quid at it 🤪
It was a bargain e-bike... now it's a bargain e-superbike.
Hi Rob , I have just bought the Stylus , I like the upgrade you have made , can you put in the description the list (Links) of all the new parts , cheers.
Done! All links in the description. Cheers, Rob.
i think you are really good at what you do and i enjoyed this video . i think IMHO to make this more real world you could have stripped off weak components and ebayed them . Then upgraded the weak points with sensible upgrades . Subtract the ebay sales total from upgrade price and add it to the cost of the bike to give a real world total . That would have been a very clever and imtereting real world project . just throughing on free stuff is simply not real IMHO
maybe an idea for a project ? im currently doing exactly that to a trek rail 7 , debonair 170 mm air shaft and charger 2.1 damper upgrade and its good to go . there is an art to buying stock bikes and upgrading week points and negating cost by selling parts on ebay .
I recently bought a Cannondale Moterra LT2 2018 for 2450 pounds from someone in Reading. that is the cheapest emtb :) had only 600 miles on it..works perfect.
Bargain!
@@RobRidesEMTB I agree..was very lucky to get it...the only reason I got it it's cause I made an effort to go there and pick it up...plenty people wanted it shipped. it is a beast...maybe you can review it one day. I live in London.
Thanks for the video Rob!
It's a shame that this is only sold in Decathlon's euro stores. It's also a shame that it comes with a grotesquely long chainstay.
Yeah that chainstay is crazy long. The bike is a weird one but it actually feels pretty great to ride in a mullet configuration with short reach, Long chainstay and 63.6 degree head angle!
I am planning on buying this as a replacement for my trek powerfly that was stolen on Friday depressing though I only just upgraded the wheels and breaks to hope in purple 3 weeks before it was stolen
Thsnk god for insurance
Im trying to understand and want to but just dont have the techical know how.
The machining on those red pedals is something else.
Finished product looks Amazing
Hope make some great kit, it's good value for what you get usually and are generally a good component choice for E-bikes IMO.
Seating a tyre that's already been seated is easy especially when its already spent days/weeks/months in shape.
Not sure I'd do any more Red as you'll end up being "that guy" :P ... less is more in accent colours IMO.
Yeah, it’s at the limit of red now! Maybe Black crank arms would have balanced it out a bit! Agree on the tyre seating comment - rear was a brand new one though 👍👍
@@RobRidesEMTB 100% for the black crank arm. I went for anodised red theme as well, but it's always hard to know when to stop, when it's not subtle anymore, and you usually only realise after you've installed that part that was too much, hahaha!
Love HOPE components have their stuff all over my current bike and have used their stuff on my previous bikes, their customer service is second to none, 👍🏴
If you can’t buy in the Uk jump on a ferry. There are loads of Decathlon shops just over the water. Would like to see what all that Hope kit cost to see what the bike cost then. Mind you I would rather buy a cheeped bike and then upgrade than an expensive bike then upgrade. Especially if you get the same motor 🤙
I can't afford these parts but I live in HOPE.😉
Hope has one of the most kick ass machine shop unbelievable
been considering getting one to get back into mountain biking (Derbyshire here so hilly )
I’m riding Hope for 10 years now and never want anything different. Bought a new YT Jeffsy so Hope is getting some orders next month.
They just ooze quality, as soon as you pick up the parts and see the level of detail.
Hey Rob would you ever review either a Frey Ex or Luna X1 e-mountain bike? I hear that they are the best bang for buck bikes on the market with massive 160nm torque bafang motors.
Seriously pimped it up. Not such a bargain now with £5k upgrades
Top Job Rob, let us know if it rides better than a bike costing the Equivalent upgraded price , keep em comming.
Tmac pedals are the best flats I have ever tried, u need to try ,feel like u are in the pedals
Seems like you got a nice setup there. That sthe rotors I use in my G1, but I have 180 rear 203 front in black, and yes the flowing rotors are little bit lighter, cus it's aluminum, but flowing rotors stay noticeably cooler than regular rotors. So say thry don't notice a difference, but I ride high speed downhill, and brake hard, so jus t going from resin only Shimano rotors to same size Hope rotors increased performance a great deal, no more overheating rotors, less wear too, bu tmy new bike required 180mm rear so now I have redundant 160mm rotors, doi g nothing, but have the 180 mm rotors are the back on my new bike.
The only con of floating rotors is they can develop some play, and creak a little bit after years of use, I have one rotor that creaks a little bit. I have 3 wheelsets so 3 rear rotors now, but it was used at the front on my old bike.
Decathlon dream build vs your Levo with wheel set, what would you prefer to ride ? I know there’s will be some price difference (Levo costing more new)
Cool video...... who doesn’t like upgrades!
Hey Rob. Still hoping to bag one of these Stilus but old Decathlon customer service online are hopeless. I now have a cycle to work voucher and they won't even entertain me with securing one to my local store. The store staff have said the only way to secure the stock in store is for me to buy it online with a credit card and they'll refund it when the bike comes in store and use the Cycle to Work... And that was the store helping me out with limited scope. So emailed Decathlon customer service about it and pretty much fobbed me off to keep check the website. You can't even purchase any bike online with them on Cycle to Work... Complete mess!
Nice! But I probably couldn't even afford the rotors!
I want a e bike but i just thought i was dreaming when you said this is the cheapest bike and when i checked it is 27.000 in my country which makes 9 times less affordable.
I really hope that one day in my life i will be able to have my own mountain bike
Hi Rob, I also have the Decathlon Stilus and it's great to see the upgrades you can get for it, thanks for sharing!
Hi Gary, cheers! Hope you're loving the Stilus, best bang for buck ebike out there I think!
@@RobRidesEMTB Really, Really enjoying the Stilus, it's my first ebike definitely great value for money, been lots of.places I may not have bothered on a regular bike, thanks for the reply!
Have to appreciate that Specialized decided to keep the Levo cockpit so clean. None of those ugly large chicklets.
These videos are super helpful. Love where your filming-rode around there years ago in between course.
Great to hear!
Looks sweet 👍 A mate is looking at getting a ebike soon he is thinking about a vitus so will need to show him this vid. U know it now needs a red rockshox lyrik ultimate now right ? 😁
Oh my, that has got me thinking!! I think it does need a Red Lyric!!
i can see u are very happy with this ebike compare to the very expensive once because they are on steroid prices. this review means a lot to me. i wish I can find a store near me in Riverside or Orange California so I can go buy it now...
I do rly appreciate the stilus. Such a great bike
The Ghost Hybrid SL AMR S1.7 + AL U - Beige - 2020 is merely the same price, allready with mullet setup, and a decent configuration. Any plans on testing this bike ?
I hope Hope let you keep the bits. This is such a fantastic advert for hope. Soon as I saw the parts my trigger finger was itching to go buy some trick hope bits for my already multi coloured vitus! Those cranks especially! So nice.
Me to.. I love the crank arms
I like it in the original, but love it like this. I just can't afford a bike like this 😕
In general good bicycles are expensive
it would be kinda cool to try and source a carbon or carbon/kevlar bash guard...
Am I right in thinking that those crank arms cannot be fitted to a Shimano E8000 motor? The Hope installation manual states that these cranks fit Bosch, Brose and some other manufacturers' motors.
Correct! No model for the e8000.
Great looking bike there, if decathlon Aus had stock I would've loved to checked one of these out.
Love the upgrades, looking forward to the bike reveiw. What would be the cost for all these parts and is there any one upgrade in your opinion worth it more than the rest?
Cheers, total build cost including bike frame battery motor etc is around £5k - I just added the breakdown in description. Biggest difference in the ride is the Mullet setup, so 29er at the front, 27.5 at the rear and changing out the Fork to a better performer and changing out the Smart Sam tyres to something more aggressive. Then the brakes are something else in terms of performance.
Can't wait to see the ride review after all the upgrades..... im stepping into the ebike pond with a budget of £4500 any advice would be appreciated
Nice video what was the portable bike stand you were using cheers.
cool video! wish there were more upgrade videos on big channels, so great idea! 🤘 bit too much red in my opinion, but cool components nonetheless, shame the pike fork is grey and not black with chrome pike stickers.
Cheers! More upgrade vids to come for sure!
Hi, Rob great vid as usual. Any idea on the weight saving you got from your upgrades, or is that for the next vid. Gotta love Hope gear, can't wait for the ride review. Congrats on your new bike.
nice video buddy, but you didn't show the front chain ring??
Nice Rob! Loving the upgrades can't wait for the ride video!! Not round Minley though lol take it somewhere hardcore!! 😁🤙
I have a 2018 (last gen) Levo and I was wondering if I could throw a 29er in front for a mullet setup? Would it totally screw up the geometry? Thanks
15:40 Hi Rob is it safe to takeout the top spacer above the stem and install the handlebar directly under the Stem Top Cap ? Thanks
Great content Rob!! Love the studio. Bike giveaway coming up sometime soon? 😜
Cheers Michael, thats a good idea!
When I first saw "Hope" brakes on the teaser for the video I thought they were like some of the brakes I used to have .... Slam them on as hard as you can and "HOPE" they work ... Was sorta a joke back in the day ..
Bike looks sick, Rob. Hope makes some very nice kit
Quality of the stuff is top
Great video as always. Could you do a video on a just the mullet conversation. Cheers 👍
Great video, I was going to ask how much were all the parts but I guess it pays to read the details lol.
Brilliant vid.
Am I right to assume you now ride with a 29er upfront and a 27.5 in the rear?
Hi Rob.... like the Hope upgrades! i am a big Hope fan!
I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements the upgraded brakes make Rob, as I've just ordered some from Hope. On looks alone they are winners, it's just a shame the lead in time is so long :(
If he brake the frame he can put a Sworks Tld frame in place :)
So Rob test it!
Amazing take on this rig n love the upgrades on the decathlon bike - keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Come on Rob, where's the ride video? We're all itching to see how it rides.
Fun build out but for $5k I’d think I’d just go ahead and buy a better e bike. Thanks for the video.
You'll not get a better ebike for 5k than what robs just built
Alpine160 Perhaps. I’m not doubting it. It’s simply that buying a lower priced bike only to add several thousand more in upgrades basically defeats the purpose of buying a lower priced e-bike. I’m not disputing the build and quality of the end product. I guess if you already own a lower priced bike and want to make it a performer then it makes sense.
@@uptopmikep7065 the way I'd look at it is, what would I finally end up with for my 5k, I'll be taking the plunge and buying my first ebike in January, I'll have 5k to spend, I had narrowed my search down to the focus jam2 6.9, which is definitely the best spec'd bike out the box for 5k, but it's definitely not as well spec'd as the stilus Rob has just built,
Alpine160 I take you’re going to build one then. I’ll look forward to the video report. Have fun with it!
That's fine if you will just buy a straightforwardly better out-of-the-box bike, and it's equally fine you just want to straightforwardly spend 5k on an out-of-the-box bike. Your dough - your decision. But what you WILL NOT be doing is spending 5K on a better out-of-the-box bike. And that's the point. You don't get BOTH. You can spend 5K and get a worse bike, OR you can get a better bike and spend a lot more than 5k.
AWESOME!
What is the cost for all the upgrades?
I’ll work out a build cost in the next vid!
dj- andy-bee looks like good advertising for Hope, cost of all the parts would be interesting.
Fantastic upgrades, so frustrated can’t get hold of one, even buttered up the sales girl at decathlon 😉 everyday looking for last 3 weeks plus............ahhhhhhhhhh! Keep up the good work 🤙🏾
Fingers crossed! I hear they are getting another 200+ very soon! Make sure you are subscribed to email stock alerts, and good luck!
Rob Rides EMTB ah ha, perfect .......... will let your followers know .... thanks Rob 😊👍🏽
in the future you should fo a part two wear you put wireless dropper and gears on etc!!
I’d really like to see a cost breakdown on this
Hi Rob, great upgrade. I read the datasheet of the fork, and the pike is not ebike ready, is that a problem ?
For my better understanding, are you using 29" rim at front and 27,5" rim at rear ?
Thnaks a lot for the video, I'll upgrade my stilus soon !
Hey mate, Pike has been absolutely fine on a few ebikes that I’ve had it on. It’s a very good fork.
nice job enjoyed the vid
Thanks 👍
I cant seem to find this bike available for sale in the US. Do they offer it at all here?
Not a big fan of mullet, but those hope parts look neat!
Brendan Tovey In my perspective mullet are kinda ugly and weird looking, I understand they handles well but the looks really push me away
I agree, actually mullet setup should be slower in all type of tracks up and downhill except on flat and twisty single trail. I also think it's ugly but that is just me.
can you let us know how the bar feels compared to your previous renthal alu. CHeers
Just like Christmas Day.....😍👍
For sure!
Please do a review on the declatons rockrider am 500s or the 100s👌 keep up the good work 😃
Sana All Naka Hope ang Ebike 😍😍😍
This guy upgrades his bike without breaking a sweat! Is this even possible?
Hi Rob, last week I chipped my G4 bosch on a drop, a 1x1cm of the cast aluminum came of, I would keep that bashguard on. ;) got a recommendation for a bashguard for the g4? Or just send me your old, I’ll pay for it :)
Looks sick as
Cheers!
So there is hope for decathlon ebikes.
looks nice rob
Decathlon currently has the 29"er version of the bike with 200mm brake rotors(so, no need to upgrade) & it's seat & head angle are 70° & 66° respectively, do you mean to tell me the Pike fork automatically gave it 64°? I mean how do you do that without tampering with the head spacers? how wide is the new handlebar? All these aren't clear enough Sir & renders the whole video useless.
This bike has just been removed from the Decathlon Web site. I wonder if we are about to get an upgrade?
Hi Rob, can you share the total cost of the upgrade per component? Love the red by the way. Cheers Dean
Hey Dean, all in the video description with links to the parts. Cheers, Rob.
is it possible to do a throttle only mod on this?
Tempted with the stylus and been similar size to you, I’d have to do the stem and bars too, the forks and mullet wheels also. Any other must haves to start with?
Your videos have the kind of refinement and finesse that not even the 10 million-subscriber-plus-youtube channels... Lol hope you understood that:)
Hi Rob, great video👍. I would love to know what the full upgrade, Including fork, ends up costing🤔.
Check the vid description all in there I listed full parts and cost 👍
@@RobRidesEMTB great, and thanks😎👍.
Well nice!
Must agree
