- My capless fuel neck started giving me problems. I tried the TSB from Ford about cleaning the seal with air and silicone spry to no avail. So I ordered a new neck and decided to show the process of swapping it out. Directions below.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. NOTE: The supplemental refueling adapter is located in the luggage compartment.
Install the supplemental refueling adapter and a length of semi-rigid fuel drain tube into the Easy Fuel TM
(capless) fuel tank filler pipe until the tube enters the fuel tank.
4. NOTE: This step will remove approximately one-eighth of the fuel from a completely full fuel tank and the
majority of any residual fuel from the fuel tank filler pipe. Also the fuel in the fuel tank will be below the
fuel tank inlet for fuel tank filler pipe removal without fuel spillage.
Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the drain tube and remove approximately one-eighth of the fuel
(approximately 2 gallons) from ~ completely full tank, lowering the fuel below the fuel tank inlet.
5. Remove the LH rear wheel and tire.
6. Position the LH rear wheel splash shield aside.
7. NOTE: Some fuel may remain in the fuel tank filler pipe after draining. Carefully disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe hose from the fuel tank and drain any residual fuel into a suitable container.
Release the clamp and disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.
• To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
8. Disconnect the fuel vapor tube assembly-to-fuel tank filler pipe recirculation tube quick connect coupling.
9. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe bolt and bracket.
• To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
10. Loosen the lateral stiffener bar-to-body mount nut.
• To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
11 . NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital
components and systems and their failure may result in major service expense. New parts must
be installed with the same part numbers or equivalent part, if replacement is necessary. Do not
use a replacement part of lesser qualify or substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts. NOTE: Make sure to
install! new lateral stiffener bar-to-body bolts.
Remove and discard the 2 lateral stiffener bar-to-body bolts and position the bar aside.
• To install, tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft).
12. Remove the LH exhaust intermediate pipe.
13. Detach the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel filler bezel and remove the fuel tank filler pipe.
14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Thank you so much for this!!! This is my current problem right now
A friend from work has a 2014 Mustang and is having check engine light issues. Been to the shop a few times already. I asked him if he had replaced the gas cap yet. He tells me it doesn't have one. RED FLAG!!! I went out and looked at it, and I said yeah that is probably what is going on. He already left for the weekend, but I will tell him about it Monday morning. Thanks for the video!
Miguel Lott yeah it’s a common problem on the cap less systems. I haven’t had a problem since.
Been waiting for someone to post a video on this!!! Going to change mine on my 13 stang next weekend!!! Hopefully this is my issue of me leaking fuel while filling up my tank
@2:36 is it normal for that hose to be out like that in the open?
Yes, I believe that’s some sort of drain/overflow hose.
Clean ride man!
2:35 that little hose sticking out is leaking all my gas when i poor it in, so do i gotta replace the whole neck?
Are you referring to the hose that is dangling by the frame? If so I believe that is an overflow line and just spills excess fuel out when there is too much in the neck.
Thank you. My line was like melted right next to the exhaust, idk why it was slo close without a heat protector
It’s common when people put aftermarket exhaust on to get the pipe too close to the lines and not realize it also. There should definitely be some heat shielding.
How do you change the fuel filter on a 2012 ,v6 mustang? Please help. Thanks.
By any chance do you know what that hose is called with the blue quick connect? The other end of that hose broke off on my car and I’m trying to figure out what part it is to replace it 😅
I believe it’s a tank vent from the opposite side of the tank to release air when filling.
Thanks for posting this. There's not a lot of info out there on this. The job took 2 hours including a quick trip to pickup a fuel line removal kit. Unfortunately, my check engine light remains on. Now the question is, do I keep throwing parts at it or pay up at the shop? Thank, again.
No problem, that’s why I did it lol. I had to reset my light with a scan tool (the $20 one from Walmart).
And if does come back on the only other things you can check is that the vent/return lines and not touching the exhaust over the axle or the canister purge valve around the throttle body.
Was there something holding the neck from where you fill it from?
I don’t remember exactly, if it does it will be up around the fuel door. But it may have just been pressure fit. It’s been a minute since this video.
Is it normal for that little pipe to stick out of the fuel filler neck?
What little hose are you talking about? There shouldn’t be anything except the file filler neck behind the fuel door. There is a small overflow line behind it if I remember correctly, I could be wrong. It’s been a while since I did the job.
@@Foxbodys4life the one at 2:34 the one sticking out of the hose
@@yvnglynx3834 yeah I just checked. It looks like the overflow hose. It allows the fuel to drain under the car if you over fill the tank.
@@Foxbodys4life ok thanks
So basically the overflow tube supposed to sticking out of over fuel. I’ve noticed a puddle oil leak near my driver side rear tire. Exactly where that tube is sticking out. It throwing codes P0172 & P0175
Hey I just want to know what all tool you need for this fuel neck I have a 2011 mustang v6
It’s been awhile, but I’m pretty sure just regular old hand tools. Get a set of quick disconnects for fuel lines just in case. I’m pretty sure they have c clips that hold the on but better to have them if needed.
So what about sockets like 10mm or 9 or 7
@@rgnc_dolo9934 just a standard tool set should be good.
Did you have any problems with mustang not taking gas with this issue?
No, that is normally charcoal canister related or the pump is too fast. Try backing the pump out just a hair to allow air to escape.
@@Foxbodys4life Thanks for the reply unfortunately the trick didn’t work, and looks like I will need to replace charcoal canister.
@@oscarcampos8396 I have no idea how much a canister is or how had it is to change. May be worth having it checked out first. The only way I’d think the filler neck would be the issue is if there was an obstruction in there.
the lil black hose is it normal for gas to be coming out of there whenever you pump?
the black hose that comes out from the neck filler
You shouldn’t have any fuel coming out of the neck anywhere unless you over fill it. If it’s coming out right after you start pumping it’s something else. Possibly the charcoal canister.
Question there is two vents on the top off the filler neck do you know where those two go to?
Joshua Singh I am pretty sure one goes to the tank and the other to the charcoal canister. Not 100% so don’t take my word for it lol.
Where is you jack stand?
Under the axel.
I have the same mustang 2013 that recently died on me while driving. I was at a red light and when I was about to accelerate I couldn’t go more than 20mph so I went to the side and tried to turn it on and off (which was probably not a good idea) because it didn’t turn on again.
After 30min trying to get a tow truck I luckily was able to turn in on and I drove it 3blocks to my house. I could tell it wanted to die on me again. My car makes the sound like it’s going to start but it doesn’t start.
Mechanics seem to have a hard time trying to figure it out what’s wrong with it.
I had the fuel fill inlet sign on my dashboard couple month ago but went away. Any ideas of what could be wrong?
People tell me could be gas pump.
And I was told too that this mustang have 2 gas pumps? I’m confused.
Ruby Munoz I would start with the fuel pump. And yes there are 2. The one on the drivers side is the main, the other one is a transfer pump because the gas tank is split between the driveshaft. I just put a video up on changing the pump.
Man what about the fuel filteror fuel pump. No videos on changin those parts on 2013 mustangs
Hani Al jabri the actual fuel pump is super easy. I just did one on a 2006, not sure if the video is any good or not because I was going fast but I may throw it up.
If you go to my videos, I just uploaded the video on the Fuel pump replacement process.
@@Foxbodys4life thank u for your fast resbons but i think 2011_2014 is diffrent
@@Foxbodys4life because the fuel pump and the fuel pump in 2011_2014 come in one unit. Like in one pes
Hani Al jabri all the fuel pumps are the same. There is a filter on the pump but there is a in line filter around the tank under the car.
Did the inside of your car suddenly start smelling like gas? Or just an engine light
No I just had the CEL. But it would be possible for a fuel smell to make it in the cabin if it was bad enough.
@Foxbodys4life driving mine home today and suddenly got fuel smell coming in. It got so bad i had to pull over. My eyes were burning. Checked my fuel rail and injectors no leaks. No smells under the hood. No smell in the trunk. Only inside cabin.
Check all the line that connect to the fuel neck. One may have split.
Would the cap for this code
These don’t have a cap, but in my case it was essentially the seal that took the place of the cap that was causing the code.
Should I replace the fuel neck if I just have gas spilling out from the fuel fill area?
If it’s pouring out of the cap less fill area it’s going to be a different problem. It’s possible that there is a block in the neck, it also could be the charcoal canister.
Foxbodys4life yeah I’m looking on forums now. I can’t fill up at full speeds like I used to. I’m just trying to figure out the problem before I start spending.
@@Justbeingfrankx sounds like a bad charcoal canister or purge valve. The purge valve is cheap and on the intake under the throttle body if I remember correctly. Don’t jump right to the neck, that’s expensive lol.
Foxbodys4life hopefully that’s the problem. I’m gonna go under and check to see if the vent tube is melted or not. I can’t really fill even 3 dollars without gas spilling.
@@Justbeingfrankx hopefully it’s just a melted hose.
Also, where did you order the neck from?? I went to order the right part for my 2014 V6 3.7
I ordered it from my local Ford dealer. There are some aftermarket ones but I decided to go with Motorcraft.
@@Foxbodys4life OUFFF 🥵 I’m betting it cost a lot?
@@victoriarose7625 I think it was around $150.
Did your car stall out at all from this problem? Because my car stalls out badly all the time. Like some days it’s okay and others it’s bad.
No I never had a stalling problem, just the cel. Check you Idle Air control valve. That could case a stalling at idle.
did you every find what was causing your car to stall mines doing the same thing took it to 4 mechanics and they dont know whats causing it
Pretty sure it can only be a few things.
Idle Air Control valve
Fuel filter
Mass air meter (dirty or failing) can buy cleaner for it
Vacuum leak
Evap purge valve
Or possibly weak fuel pump
@@Foxbodys4life am going to replace all of these n get back to you
Get your parts at a local parts store and swap them 1 at a time, if it doesn’t change return them lol. Minus the fuel filter lol.
How did you get the blue pin line off? I’m trying to get it off right now
Jason cruz I think your talking about the vent line. If you are yon need the quick disconnect tools. They have them at any auto parts store for around $10 bucks.
Jason cruz www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/lisle-4148/tools---equipment-16488/tools-23747/mechanics-tools-16816/air-conditioning-tools-16499/ac---fuel-line-disconnect-17343/4bc1d9326597/lisle-disconnect-set/37000/4413746/2014/ford/mustang?q=Quick+disconnect+fuel+line&pos=4
Before you replaced this, we’re you having issues with it siphoning gas from the passenger side tank. I have replaced the hose in mine. I just realized my neck needs replaced. Trying to figure out the issue
@miketaylor8688 that would probably be the secondary pump problem. There is a second pump that pushes fuel to the drivers side. This problem only causes the check engine light.
Thanks
Hey man I have a quick question. I’m about to replace mine from my 13 s197 and I was wondering if you have to remove the exhaust? I’m a little hesitant on doing so which might cause a exhaust leak.
Jonathan Leon You will have to remove the axel back for sure. I have full kooks so I can’t speak for stock mid pipes, but I had to drop the driver side from the x back. I haven’t had any exhaust leak issues. I did have the entire drivers side wiggle back and the axle back was vibrating on the rear subframe. I didn’t tighten it enough.
Foxbodys4life okay bro I did all that now I’m trying to disconnect it but I can’t find the blue connect anywhere..???!!
Jonathan Leon If your talking about the quick disconnect, it’s going to be close to the body above the exhaust. Just follow it back from the filler neck. The blue clip is just a retainer, it’s possible it’s missing.
Going off my memory, it’s been a while.
Foxbodys4life I got it bro after 2 hrs I got it done. I don’t have a scanner rn to erase the code but on my dash board it’s still displaying “check fuel inlet” 🤦🏽♂️
Thank you !
what obd code give you ? to know that was your problem
I think it was a P0442. I also had the warning on the information display.
@@Foxbodys4life thank you for fast reply , nice job and nice video . I am going to do the flush in coolant ,power steering , and brakes . , nice mustang :)
@@miguelena40 well if you have a 2011 and up you don’t have to worry about a power steering flush. They don’t have a pump, it’s all electric.
@@Foxbodys4life good to know I learn something from., you but I have the 2010 4.6 L , I used to have a Jaguar with electric power steering one day power steering start being hard to turn and guess what it was a running with low voltage I was like whaaaat ? the car crank and works perfect but I buy a new battery and problem solve . jaguar the worse car ever sorry but is the true.
So is it leaking still? I have the same problem on my 2014 5.0... its annoying she has been sotting for 2 months cuz of the leaking problem when trying to fell up
John Lucero mine just leaked the vapor, I never leaked fuel. But every since I changed it I have been good.
Foxbodys4life damn, mine leaks the fuel outta the lil line below the top
John Lucero that sounds like it’s either over filled or there is a blockage.
Foxbodys4life idk im on E right now, if i out $20 in it starts leaking at 10 and stoping as if its filled
John Lucero that could be charcoal canister related. Only other suggestion is try filling it as slow as possible. But if the charcoal canister is bad it can case the tank to not release pressure as your filling up and that will cause the back up of fuel.
Why work in the road? You have a drive way right there.
Dan Martin because my driveway is on about a 10-15 degree incline. Depending on the job depends on where I work on my cars.
How much was the part?
Martin Garcia it been a while, but if I remember right it was about $100.
Foxbodys4life original from the dealership? I order one from summit racing but I notice it doesn’t have the locking system. I got it for one $100 too
Martin Garcia I got mine from the dealer.
Axel vent is leaking
Yeah has for the entire time I’ve had it. It’s never low on fluid so don’t mess with it. Just keeps rust off that area lol.
@@Foxbodys4life ah lol i just replaced mine bc it was leaking how do you know if its low
@@daytonendsley7662 pull the plug in diff cover, the fluid should be almost even with the bottom of the plug. You normally fill it up until the fluid starts to drip out.
@@Foxbodys4life ah okay yea i just changed my fluid to when i got a new vent
Any symptoms
Carlos Jasso started with the information center saying check fuel inlet and turned into a CEL for evap leak. No performance issues though.
Not one of Fords better ideas. My 2011 GT just began throwing the check filler door note three weeks ago. Very annoying. Ford knows it is a problem but just keeps on making cars and trucks with this sorry system. Never had my 1998 F150 with 4.6 do this in 400,000 miles. It had a cap with the O-ring seal that never failed.
Yeah I’m not a fan of it, but most auto manufacturers are going to this setup. It’s really just another way for them to make money in the long run.
👍
What a pain.
The only meaningfull part (removing the quick connect) and you didn't show it...
Because all you do is push in the disconnect tool and pull them apart.
This is a 2000 dollar job at the dealership
Man, I paid like $130 or something like that for the neck and had it changed out in less than 2 hours.
I see why the foreign cars are better made than America made cars only fools will make a fuel system like this and my 04 Mustang GT automatic has a better fuel system than my 14 and my 04 have a gas cap with 170,000 miles with no problem with the fuel system
My 14 has 83k miles and that’s the only failure it’s had. 7 years on the road and 1 OEM repair, that’s not a problem. Our 2006 F150 has 250k miles and has had only had 4 real repairs, not under basic maintenance. My aunt and uncle had Nissans and everything had to be bought at the dealer at high prices because it was all shipped in from Japan.
Hahahahaha well when this starts to happen with me in my 2014 Mustang GT I am going to get rid of this ridiculous car before I blow my self up and get me a Toyota or Honda or Nissan or a Hyundai
Lol well this problem will not cause the car to “blow up”.
