Same here with Harvey. We took a beating in Houston with that hurricane. Now if authorities say to evacuate, I'm outta here.
Next time I'm leaving. Thing was terrifying. We're like walking zombies. No electricity. No water. Intermittent internet. I'm in my car charging my phone. It's been a week. Things seem like they're moving slow but, there's so much! Hundreds of poles down. Cell Towers down. Banks closed except for ATM. Gas lines are ridiculous. Sorry don't mean to whine. Im waiting for a sleep pill to take affect because I'm having trouble sleeping in this humidity. I know things will be ok by soon.

Did you see how many mobile homes there were? These people didn’t have much but that was all they had in the world, everything they had worked their lives for. If they stay in their home, there is the possibility of securing things during the storm so they DON’T lose everything. It’s all they have. Also, Evacuating is expensive and poses a separate risk of getting trapped on the road, breaking down or running out of gas. Your response is proof that you have no understanding of the human condition which means that you are the least qualified to be offering your opinion to people who actually have boots on the ground.

Florida is a beautiful state to visit as tourist, but it is a terrible choice for retirement for obvious reason like this.
If you're trying to live on social security it is one of the cheapest places to live and easy, no snow to shovel etc. that is why people come here. Plenty of good health facilities too. I get what you're saying but we don't have storms like this every year. If you are wealthy and buy a place on the beach you are asking for it. One day insurance companies are going to smarten up and refuse to rebuild every house wiped away by these newer monster storms. I have been here 30 years now and I have yet to be impacted in a serious way, it's a gamble for sure, but so is being old.

@@lideabarker8161 No major insurers are in the state of Florida anymore for this reason. Once you reach a certain size, you have too much to lose by being here. If we had a Katrina/Andrew scale disaster, a lot of the carriers here would simply go bankrupt and call it a day.

there was the thought about moving to Florida but with the high housing market prices and devastating hurricanes we'll stay in San Antonio Texas . the gulf is only 2hrs away it's not worth to deal with the threat of hurricanes every year.

It is more than ridiculous to refer to these storms as one in 500 years, 1 in 1000 years, when they occur annually now, perhaps not striking the same region every year, but they are occurring annually or more frequently now. My friend lives in Manilla, Philippines and that region has been devastated by numerous category 4 and 5 hurricanes over the past several years.
The storms occur every year, but they don't hit the same place every year. If you've ever had to get flood insurance, it's based on a calculation called the "100 year flood". It doesn't mean that it's a flood of that scale that only occurs once in a 100 years anywhere, but a risk assessment of would could occur at that specific location.
Not true at all! Manila has not really experienced any category 4 or 5 storms for several years now! Hopefully, it will stay that way and the Sierra Madre mountain range will continue to protect the National Capital Region or Metropolitan Manila from strong typhoons! The Philippines had some category 4 or 5 typhoons in other regions of the country but not in Metro Manila.

They might not have anywhere to go or don’t have money to stay at a hotel, etc. some people don’t leave because they have to watch their animals, like farm animals, that are too large to travel with. I'm in all of the Florida FAcebook groups. Everyone was saying they weren't leaving and that it is no big deal. They are idiots for staying, what makes me most mad is that their stupidity put the lives of our responders at risk bc they have to put themselves in dangerous situations to save the idiots.
Reminds me of Hugo, Andrew and Katrina. Easy. Widespread devastation. Roads broken like sand, boats thrown on land. Houses miles from their original location. It’s truly devastating having been in one of the aforementioned historic storms. My heart goes out to Florida.

@@KingGiL7 probably not NO has levees. The reason Katrina flooded the city was a barge broke loose and was pushed into the levee breaking it and letting water through.
Seeing the devastation should be a wake-up call to everybody. From Hurricane Andrew State of Florida got tough building codes, and it is my sincere hope if people still want to live right next to the big ocean waters, it would be mandatory to build on 20 feet stilts to allow the heavy mass to flow underneath and take away the impact of the moving mass to the structures, just like in Key West. Florida's West Coast is stunningly gorgeous paradise, but State's Governor's statements about "once in a 500-year event" are both ridiculous and clownish, at best. There will be another event within the next 10 years, perhaps a number of times within that time period, possibly a stronger Hurricane than Ian was. Safety is job #1, and building on stilts is the way for people to keep on enjoying the unique, beautiful sub-tropical paradise. "Once-in-a-100-year-", or "Once-in-a-500-year-event"-statements do not reflect the new normal.

My buddy’s family is from fort myers and they said stilt homes were ripped out and floating away through pinecone island
@@ZakRios333 I was looking at some of the footage- clearly it didn't appear stilts were 20 feet high nor made out of steel/concrete. If stilts are built 30-40 feet down and poured with number of rebars for footing, it should hold really well. If the storm surge was higher than 20 feet, then no prayer will help. Using this building method would save many lives along the immediate Coastline. Stating this with the understanding, that constructing right next to the big ocean waters should never have been allowed in the first place........

It was category 5 in Leyte Philippines several years ago. Praise God, people were able to recover and rebuild! Florida, you can do it!

I can't stand looking at DeSantis. He spent $12,000,000 in taxpayer dollars on a political stunt, putting his personal interest over the people of Florida. That $12,000,000 would have been much better spent helping the residents of Florida.

It gets me how someone can live in a flimsy mobile home or manufactured home in a place that is prone to storms like this. Those homes aren't meant to withstand that kind of weather.

Bc they possibly don’t have money for a home? Contrary to popular belief…. Not everyone in floridas coastal cities are rich… home insurance here is insane. It’s for some people, 10x the national rate which is around $1500 for a avg for the nation. In Florida, expect to pay 5-10k a year on home insurance, I’ve seen 18k a year in home insurance as well.

I cannot believe this happened. At least I can't believe it was this bad. I moved to South Carolina from Charlotte county fl just shy of 2 years ago and I'm thankful I did although it is now heading towards the Carolinas. I pray for each and every person affected by this storm and as bad as it looks, Florida is used to this and it's heartwarming to see such an immediate effort to help each other to get back on their feet. It's a huge community helping one another through this devastating incident and I pray that this is the worst of it.

I can believe it happened. What I can not understand, is how stupid these people were not believing the storm was as serious as it was.

Still think we don't have climate change? We were hit by Hurricane Michael, clocked at over 160 mph (may be strongest storm to strike America)four years ago and it was devastating. We lost 80% of our trees, which wind weaponized into projectiles and misses through homes, businesses,and structures. Storm flattened Mexico Beach and dessimated Tyndall AFB. It was brutal. My heart goes out to people who are dealing with this right now. We up in the Panhandle sympathize with you and will send funds and aid.
Hurricanes have been hitting Florida since forever. But since people LIVE down there now as opposed to 100 years ago, the devastation doesn't go unnoticed. Just give all your money to Al Gore already and be done with it
Nobody said the climate isnt changing. The climate has always and will always change, which is why the world we live in now is very different from what it was thousands of years ago. The point is that it is not "man" who is affecting the climate to the point of devastation. Yes, we certainly should reduce our waste and take care of our environment but our activities do not result in climate change. Nature will do what it does and has always done.
And no, hurricane Michael is not the strongest or fastert to hit the US...that goes to an unnamed hurricane which hit Florida in the 1930s with speeds of up to 185mph

Last hurricane was 17 years ago and this is probably the first time any of these people have experienced this kind of destruction so it’s not like the cycle of destruction and rebuilding that you obviously imagine. Did you notice how many mobile homes there were? It’s not like these people have the luxury of too many choices. Give them a break and show some compassion or just don’t say anything at all.
It's the first time a hurricane hit that area in 100 years. Since 1932. So not sure what you mean by "keep rebuilding".

I was three and five years old when I saw two 🌀 when you have to be rescued 🛶 from the living room, houses passing by . every time you see another hurricane is almost like deja vu.

I have a flight with American Airlines on October 10th to travel to Fort Myers and I called them and they're acting as if nothing is wrong and it seems like they won't be giving refunds for flights but yet the city is 90% destroyed, its destroyed and its not safe there. So like people to criticize the Govenor for misspeaking about 500 year flood event. Easy to be critical when one doesn't consider his responsibility exhausting non stop work load. I mean some of this was preventable, literally for longer than a week they've been saying it was going to be bad leave. For those that didn't heed warning I have a hard time having sympathy for.
You realize it was supposed to hit Tampa Bay, and within 24 hours it changed course and headed for ftMeyers right? Everyone in Hillsborough/ pinellas/ pasco counties all evacuated, and boarded up, and prepped, people in ft Meyers weren't on the radar (really) until the 24/36 hours before it hit.

Haven't they learned, that hurricanes are unpredictable? No one can predict exactly, what will happen.
If the Tampa area was predicted to be a likely target, the entire west coast should have been prepared, especially in the lower areas.
Nowadays, more and more frequently, hurricanes bring with them heavy rains, so in addition to sea water, flooding of rivers and other waters is a threat. In addition, hurricanes move more slowly and gather strength from warmer sea water, so predicting the direction has become more difficult.
It would be time to learn new "rules", the old doctrines no longer apply.
Some say, that now is not the time to discuss, what might happen in the future.
Right now is the right time for authorities and residents to make difficult decisions. Once the destruction has been cleared, there must be ready plans on, how to prevent destruction of a similar extent.
However, rebuilding will take years. Now is also the time to look at how to improve safety in areas, where the hurricane did not hit now. It is also time to check the sustainability of the infrastructure.
Anything past Jacksonville is too much Florida for me.

@@cristywyndham-shaw5111 Lived in North Dakota for years, the blizzards are rough at times but nowhere near earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, etc. The only real natural disaster there is tornados and those impact such narrow strips that it's very uncommon for one to be too terrible.
